Open & Shut Case For OSB, Plywood Mills

The closing of six plywood mills during 2000 leaves 103 plywood operations in the U.S. and Canada, according to APA-The Engineered Wood Association.

Closures last year included Temple-Inland Corp., Pineland, Tx.; Willamette Industries, Inc., Ruston, La.; Louisiana-Pacific Corp., New Waverly, Tx.; International Paper Co., Waycross, Ga. ; Willamette Industries, Inc., Dallas, Or., and Potlatch Corp., Jaype, Id.

Depot Suspects Arrested

A Fontana, Ca., couple were arrested Feb. l2 in Rancho Santa Margarita, Ca., on suspicion of burglarizing or robbing l3 local stores and restaurants, including an armed holdup of a Home Depot in Laguna Hills.

Police said Todd Hill Smith, 32, and Rebecca Jean Mangan, 24, are believed to have committed numerous stickups with a baby in the back seat of their getaway car.

shuttering reduced plywood capacity by 1.2 billion sq. ft.

Of the 103 plywood mills, 90 are based in the U.S., with the remaining l3 located in Canada. Since 1987, 65 American and Canadian plywood facilities have closed.

Meanwhile, OSB continues to increase its capacity, thanks in part to the addition of four new mills during 2000: Nexfor, Inc., Joanna, S.C.; Georgia-Pacific Corp., Fordyce, Ar.; Footner Forest Products Ltd., High Level, Alberta, and Weyerhaeuser Co., Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan.

According to an unnamed store employee, no one was injured in the Home Depot robbery. "No one was hurt, that's all I can tell you," he said. "I don't even want to say when the crime occurred, it was just in the early part of the month, that's all I'm going to say."

The couple, who were captured after their car broke down, are facing charges of armed robbery, burglary, auto theft and child endanserment.

Kinzua Upgrading Sawmill

Kinzua Resources, LLC, Veneta, Or., is completing the second phase of an upgrade to its Pilot Rock sawmill, which will double its production capabilities, according to spokesman Gary Murdoch.

Previously, the 73-year-old facility, which was acquired by Frontier Resources in 1994, produced about 66 million bd. ft. annually, mostly ponderosa pine and Douglas firllarch.

The growing demand for Kinzua's products led to the upgrade, Murdoch says, plus the firm wants to establish new niche markets.

In addition to upgrading the lumber handling equipment, a McGehee 2000 small log processor was installed to optimize the conversion of small-diameter logs into lumber on a high-volume basis. Other new machines include a trimsaw and flat board edger, a high-speed small log debarker, a merchandising system for the McGehee and a 12" double arbor gang saw.
