LOOKING AHEAD, LOOKING BACK

On February l, 2001, the S.M. Hoyt Lumber Co. celebrated its 75th year of business in Ontario, Ca. On March 2, it will close and consolidate with its Upland yard at 120 S. Euclid.

Enclosed are two invoices from 1937 from San Pedro Lumber. Note the 4x4 30'was only $31/m and delivery to Ontario was 140. The 1xl2 redwood was only $44lm.

Also enclosed is a picture of my father, D.H. Nelson. with a load of lumber from E.K. Wood's harbor yard on its way to an Ontario lumberyard. Note the shovel to dig the truck out if it got stuck and the jacks on top of the load to tighten the chains. Evidently, he didn't have chain binders. With the hard rubber tires it was an all-day trip to the harbor and back.

Energy Crisis Fuels Sales

California hardware retailers are reporting an increase in sales of emergency and energy-efficient supplies, as consumers try to save on utilitY costs while keeping their homes lit and warm amid scattered power outages.

Consumers are stocking up on flashlights, firewood, candles, insulation and weatherstripping, according to store employees statewide. Meanwhile, sales of fluorescent bulbs and generators in particular have been strong for Home Depot, which reported hefty sales increases for both products from this time last year.

Demand for emergency lighting and energy-efficient bulbs also is up, according to Wayne Flittner, Home Depot, Thousand Oaks. "They've taken the vendor by surprise," he said. "They're having a hard time keeping up with demand."

Michael Moore, assistant manager, Lowe's, Fresno, said he recently doubled his order for fluorescent bulbs. "We can't keep them in stock," he said. "ln the past, we could keep about 100 fluorescent bulbs on the shelves for about a month. Now, it's a matter of days before we sell out."

Bill Freed, a Home Depot manager in Oxnard, said portable generator sales also have increased. "We can't get enough of them," he said. "Everyone is sold out of them throughout the region. We sold our 20 quickly and they cost $400 to $500 a pop."

The situation recalls the Y2K scare at the end of 1999, according to Kerisha Jackson, a Lowe's assistant manager in Torrance. "They're buying the same type of stuff," she said. "Everybody is standing in line talking about it. The word is out."

Garth Smith, Dale Hardware, Fremont, said many customers have inquired about energy conservation. "It boils down to economics," he said. "They want to cut their electricity bills."

Energy conservation was on the mind of Jim Baugh, who purchased over $70 worth of fluorescent bulbs at the Orchard Supply Hardware in La Crescenta.

"My wife said she doesn't like fluorescent lighting because it bothers her eyes, but I snuck one in and she didn't notice," he confessed. "So now I'm going to replace every light bulb in the house."
