DRODUCT maintenance has I become an important consideration for today's consumers.
Everyone is so busy today that few people have time to spend washing their car, to say nothing of staining a deck or painting a fence. With all of the substitute synthetic materials available to today's busy consumer, one must also keep in mind that California redwood is one of nature's most maintenance-free buildine materials.

to another.
In a damp or humid climate, redwood used outdoors will go through two stages, the first being a darkening of the wood. In time, this darkening may be rinsed away by rain, and the redwood will weatherbleach to a soft driftwood gray.
on redwood may not be the same on all sides of a house. This is because sunlight and water cause redwood's color changes, and different areas of a house usually have varying types of exposure.
Two boards installed side by side may also vary in color because of the diversity of color and texture offered by individual pieces of redwood lumber. This is one of the aesthetically pleasing qualities of a natural material such as redwood, compared to the artificial uniformity of synthetic products.
Should a more uniform appearance be desired, redwood's natural color changes, a result of the weathering process, are completely reversible by following guidelines presented in the California Redwood Association's Technical Data Sheet, "Color Restoration of Redwood Siding and Decks." The project can then be coated with a pigment-containing stain or paint.
This is a good selling point for customers when they are making building materials decisions. Redwood can either be finished, or left to weather naturally. It is their choice.
Redwood, with
its inherent stability and durability, is one of the few woods that can be left unfinished.
In fact. traditionally. many specifiers and builders have preferred that redwood be allowed to weather naturally without the application of a finish treatment. Fortunately, redwood, with its inherent dimensional stability and durability, is one of the few woods that can be left unfinished.

As redwood weathers, several natural color changes take place. These changes will occur over a period of vears and will varv from one climate
In drier climates, unfinished redwood may not darken. Instead, the wood will gradually turn a silvery tan, becoming lighter in color as the natural weathering continues.
Much discoloration may be the result of accumulated dirt, soot and mildew. All siding, decking and fencing will benefit from periodic cleanings whether they are natural redwood or synthetic products.

A PRIMARY factor in OSB's la.growth has been that it can be prodirced from a wide range of species, whether it's one that's readily available such as pine or what was previously considered a scrap wood, such as aspen. More limited in supply and more treasured due to its unique properties, cedar is not thought of in either of those categories.
Yet companies are using cedar for OSB. According to Dr. Leonard Guss, president of LGA Inc., a forest industry marketing research firm, "Yes, cedar is expensive for ordinary OSB uses. However, it is used for specialties where it is of high value. Cedar is well known for its resistance to rot, bugs and weathering. It is generally used as closet lining to kill moths."

For years, Huber Engineered Woods, Charlotte, N.C., has been producing l/4",4'x8' cedar panels at its OSB mill in Commerce, Ga. Made of I0O7o aromatic eastern red cedar, CedarStran panels protect silks and wool clothing without the unpleasant smell of mothballs or the expense of professional clothing storage. Applications include closets, shelving, cabinets, drawers, boxes and storage chests.
Huber says CedarStran OSB panels cost significantly less than cedar planking, and are stronger, stiffer and lie flatter than other cedar panels. Plus, it's smooth sanded to enhance aromatic emission and prevent snags.
According to Guss, "Estimates vary since Huber keeps its numbers to itself, but my estimate is that a maximum of 60,000 cubic meters are used annually-that's a drop in the bucket."
So why OSB? Huber's Sherry Walker explains, "OSB is stronger than particleboard, and it fits within our manufacturing capabilities. It's a compatible product to pine and aspen at our OSB mills."
Guss adds that "another firm, Giles & Kendall. makes a product some-
Gedar: East vs. West
Q. What is the difference between aromatic eastern red cedar and western red cedar?
A. There are many different species of cedar trees. Eastem red cedar and western red cedar are the most common in the building materials industry. Eastern red cedar has a scent that repels roaches, silverfish and moths, while resisting mildew. Westem red cedar does not have the same scent, but is ideal for outdoor applications. Eastem red cedar is recommended for indoor use, not for exterior applications or in areas that are subject to large amounts of water exposure.
Q. Uor long will closet lining's cedar scent last?
A. me scent should last the life of the closet. Cedar scent is released from oils that are trapped inside the wood, which escape rhrough small openings along the outer surface. The scent will be present as long as tlese openings are not obstructed.
Q. Wttut if the cedar loses its scenr?
A, ffre reason the cedar has lost its scent is due to the crystallization of the cedar oil that builds on the outside surface of the wood and seals the openings. To rejuvenate the scent, lightly sand the outer surface of the cedar with 100-gdt sandpaper or scour lightly with steel wool.
Q. Wfrat are the besr finishes to use?
A. Staining or sealing aromatic cedar products is not recommended because it seals in the natural aroma of the product. If, however, you do wish to stain the product, use a non-oil based polyurethane, varnish, or shellai.
- Giles & Kendall times called cedar OSB, but it's notit's a particleboard and lacks OSB's strength and exterior exposure qualities."
0SB panels cost significantly less than cedar planking.
Giles & Kendall's products include Cedarline and Supercedar cedar closet lining, as well as Cedarberry Hill aromatic cedar closet accessories. Larger logs are cut into squares from l/24"thick cedar veneer for the furniture industry and plywood industries.
The Huntsville, Al.-based firm steam distills its sawdust to produce "Oil of Cedarwood," which is sold worldwide to cosmetic and perfume industries. The spent sawdust is used as boiler fuel to produce steam for the cedar oil distillation plant, kiln drying operations, and veneer mill.
In addition, Ced-Or Forest Products Inc., a subsidiary of Ced-Or Corp,. is building the first cedar OSB plant in Canada. Expected to be completed by year's end, the Bearn, Quebec, operations will mill 325,000 cubic meters of cedar annually.
According to Guss, the mill "will make other specialties where cedar's attributes of longevity and bug killing will be useful, such as house siding."
