Grossman's Bankruptcy Likely Despite Jeld-Wen Loan

Although a loan from one of its largest suppliers would allow Contractors' Warehouse's cashstrapped parent, Grossman's Inc., to continue operating, the chain will probably file Chapter I I bankruptcy anyway as the quickest way to repay creditors.

Grossman's recently signed a nonbinding letter of intent to exchange 5OVo of its outstanding stock for shortterm financing from millwork manufacturer Jeld-Wen. Inc. Jeld-Wen chairman Richard Wendt is Grossman's largest stockholder with a l2Vo stake.

The letter is predicated upon continued financing by Grossman's secured lender, Congress Financial Corp., and Grossman's and JeldWen's ability to convince creditors to accept discounted settlements in the form of 90 day notes and stock. During the term of the loan, suppliers selling goods to the company on credit would also receive a security position in its owned real estate. The convertible note for Jeld-Wen's loan would also be secured by a subordinated collateral position in Gross- man's real estate.

A definite agreement is expected early this month.

The board has retained interim management and turnaround specialist Argus Management Corp., electing Argus president David J. Ferrari as president and c.e.o. of Grossman's Inc. Robert K. Swanson has resigned as c.e.o., but will continue as chairman of the board.

Thomas A. Ford was named exec. v.p. and chief operating officer, overseeing the operations of both of the company's divisions, Contractors' Warehouse and Mr. 2nd's Bargain Outlet. Ford, a company veteran of 23 years, was most recently president of Mr. 2nd's. Stanley G. Berman has resigned positions of president and c,o.o. of Grossman's Inc.

The company closed its 60 Grossman's yards in the Northeast last year.

L-P Keeps Alaska Mills Open

Louisiana-Pacific has reached an agreement for the federal government to provide timber that will keep its two southeast Alaska sawmills operating for three more years.

The deal provides a timber supply of 300 million bd. ft. from the Tongass National Forest and settlement of all outstanding claims by L-P subsidiary Ketchikan Pulp Co. against the government for breaches of its long-term timber supply contract and Fifth Amendment takings.

The government is to pay KPC $135 million immediately and another $5 million in three years if the company meets certain requirements related to operating the mills.

Still, KPC's pulp mill is to be permanently closed this month.

Cabinets Keep Climbing

Cabinet sales for 1996 rose 8.2Vo over 1995, with stock cabinets up 7.5V0 and custom cabinets tp l2.9vo, the largest increase for custom cabinets since L987, according to the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association.
