Earl Woods Maple, '79, cofounder of Maple Bros. Mouldings, Whittier, Ca., died of lung cancer Feb. 7 in Balboa, Ca.

A native of Whittier, he served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII, flying 40 combat missions over Germany.

ln 1947, he and his brother started Maple Bros. Mouldings, moving the company to Brea and then Chino, Ca., before selling it to Orepac in 1992. Mr. Maple retired in 1992.

Kenneth W. Ford, 88, founder and ceo of Roseburg Forest Products, Roseburg, Or., died Feb.8 in Roseburg. Ford remained active in the company until his death.

In 1936 he started Roseburg Lumber Co. with a small Roseburg sawmill, moving the company to Dillard, Or., in 1946. After building the sawmill and acquiring various timberlands, the company built its first plywood mill in 1952.In 1970 the company built the world's largest plywood plant in Riddle, Or., and in 1972, built a second particleboard line. In 1985, the firm purchased Kimberly-Clark holdings in Northern California, and additional holdings in 1988.

In 1992, part of the company's California timberlands were sold. and in 1996, Roseburg acquired 215,000 acres of International Paper's Oregon timberlands.

Herman Hudgeons, 72, former owner of Sunlight Enterprises, Lubbock, Tx., died Jan. 18 in Queen Valley, Az.

In 1980, he sold Sunlight to Capital Lumber Co., Phoenix, Az., and retired.

Warren Sellstrom, 82, owner of Elwood Manufacturing Co., El Monte, Ca., died Feb.22 in Laguna Hills, Ca.

He operated Elwood Manufacturing from the late 1960s until the mid1980s, when he sold the company and retired.

Palco Pressured To Swap

Pacific Lumber Co. has been warned by a major shareholder that harvesting the Headwaters Forest in Northern California would have dire fi nancial consequences.

In a letter to Charles Hurwitz, chairman of Palco parent company Maxxam, Inc., California Public

Employee's Retirement System head James Burton argued that logging the old growth forest would cause a public and legislative outcry which would "significantly harm the long-term value of Maxxam."

Palco had no immediate response to the letter.

Calpers, the nation's biggest and perhaps most influential public pension fund, itself is being pressured by several public employees' unions to sell its millions of dollars worth of Maxxam shares if the company won't swap the Headwaters with the federal government to settle several pending and unrelated civil actions.

In October. Palco and federal officials announced an agreement to trade 7.500 acres in the Headwaters Forest for federal land, but recently Maxxam has rejected as inadequate the government's specific proposals.
