One of the western flrms active in helping educate their retail customers is Sequoia Supply, the building products distributor based in Wilsonville, Or. At the meeting shown here, their Orange, Ca., branch teamed up with the Southern California Andersen Corp. sales rep, Bill Coady, to present a joint product workshop.

It included basic training type product information, pricing, comparison with the competition and a range of other topics to sharpen sales skills at the showroom floor level. Beginning at I p.m.,instructor Coady and Sequoia staffers Jim May and Bob Bernard explained the finer points of the Andersen Permashield casements, awnings, windows and patio doors. After a break for dinner, the class concluded at 8 p.m. The semi-annual training sessions are augmented with Saturday and evening consumer presentations by Andersen and Sequoia upon dealer request.

Eight major displays were used in the temporary classroom set up in a corner of Sequoia's Orange warehouse. Audio-visual training devices reinforced the live instruction.

Andersen distributors in the Southern California area include Sequoia, Carroll Moulding Co. and Maple Brothers, Inc.

Try a "little builders" area in your showroom. Randy Doughtie of WalkerKurth Lumber in Houston, Tx., says they have a special small workshop area in their store for youngsters. This includes a workbench, scrap lumber, hammer/nails, glue and other fun things.

Randy suggests some help and supervision by another employee so the salesperson can devote full attention to mom and dad's project.

It's another one of those ideas that make a store "different" from the competition, according to Jim Pence's "Good Idea Newsletter."

Pacific Rim Home Center Tour

A home center industry tour being organized for October and November will give home center retailers from all over the United States the opportunity to visit home center retailers in New Zealand and Australia,

In addition, the trip, which is being formed under the direction of George Milne, home center industry consultant, Hilton Head Island, S.C., will visit hardware sources in Singapore, lumber and building material exporters in Bangkok and manufacturers in Hong Kong. Fletcher Merchants LTD, Auckland,and Bowen and PomeroY Pty. Ltd., Melbourne, are among the home centers to be visited.

The tour will leave Los Angeles, Ca., on Oct. 25 by air and return Nov. 15.
