IVE of our country's leaders are scheduled to take part in the association's 1982 convention, May 20-22 at the Little America facilities in Flagstaff.
Cal Brand, deputy director, policy and budget, Hud, Washington, D.C.; Doug Ashy, president, National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association, Lafayette, La.; John Pritchard, v.p., LUA, Boca Raton, Fl., are included on the program. Ross Kincaid, former exec. director of the Western Building Material Association, Olympia, Wa., will moderate one of the panel discussions. Keynote speaker for the Saturday program will be Tom Haggai who is considered one of America's top speakers.
Dave Runyon of Flagstaff is chairing arrangements for the convention which will follow the theme Build Arizona in keeping with the fact that our state is the fastest growing in the nation.
Your staff is examining several of the bills before the Arizona state legislatgre and will work on those concerning our industry. Out in the field, Bob Ramsey and I have visited members in Phoenix, Yuma, Parker, Lake Havasu City and Kingman.
Our association was host for the Western States Lumbermen's Council meeting at the Doubletree Inn, Scottsdale cording to Jim Beardall, pres., who announced appointments at the January board meeting.

Representatives ofthe seven federated associations in theWest, Lumbermen's Association of Texas, Mountain States Lumber Dealers Association, Western Building Material Association, Montana Building Material Dealers Association, Lumber Merchants Association of No. Ca., Lumber Association of So. Ca. and our own association exchanged ideas on management and coop programs.
Of interest to our industry is the University of Arizona's Executive Development Conference, an intensive seminar designed for middle and upper level managers. Dates are April 22-30 at the Hacienda del Sol Resort, Tucson.
The new legislative affairs committee will keep members aware of pending legislation at the state and national level. Beardall appointed a representative from each state to inform the association office of local legislative activities. They are

A new committee to promote membership in the association and recognize members for outstanding contributions to the industry and the association, the membership development, awards & recognition committee includes Kay Clark, Clark's Millwork & Lumber Co., Roberts, Id., chairman; Don Northrup, Lost River Lumber Co., Arco, Id.; and Keith Ker.
The education & training committee will continue to recommend policies for the development of education programs for lumbermen and their employees throughout the Mountain States. Named co-chairmen were Don MacDuffie, . Casper Lumber Co., Casper, Wy., and Jerry Tracy, Jackson Lumber Inc., Jackson, Wy. Committee members will remain the same as last year.

'The Young Lumbermen Committee attempt to identify young lumbermen and involve them in the affairs of the association. Rick Heimsoth will chair the committee.

INCOURaGING news from Idaho Eis an announcement by the housing agency that it will offer $25.2 million in low interest (1390) mortgage money to middle and low income state residents desperate to buy their first home.
To be eligible for the loans, single residents must make $23,000 or less a year. The income limit increases to $27,000 for a family of five and goes up $1,000 for each additional family member. Loans must be used to buy older homes or construct new single-family dwellings.
Costs cannot exceed $50,000 for older homes and $57,000 for newly built homes. The funds became available Feb. I at I I lending institutions, Citizens National Bank, Idaho Bank and Trust, Idaho First "'-,ional, Lomas and Nettleton, Northern State Bank, Sherwood and Roberts, Transamerica, Utah Mortgage, Valley Bank, Western Pacific and General Electric.
Washington residents who want to get a quick message to their legislator regarding legislation during the remaining days of the 47th Washington Legislative session can use a statewide toll-free hotline. Between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. and I p.m. Saturdays, messages will be taken from those calling l-800-562-6000. Constituents also are urged to call legislators directly, visit them at their offices or write them a letter.
Freight Overcharge Common
Save dollars by keeping a close watch on freight bills which frequently have overcharges according to transportation consultants.

They found that overcharges occur up to 80q0 of the time with most errors caused by hasty calculations.
Common mistakes include errors in billing weight, failure to make up a bill of lading and errors in classification. Also beware of paying for pre-paid shipment and paying the same bill twice.

A complete inventory of Idaho's forests is expected to be completed this year using satellite pictures from NASA's Landsat 2 electronic camera.
Preliminary tests have been used by the U.S. Forest Service to monitor and manage national forests. Landsat data can be adapted by computers to create false-color maps for categorizing different vegetation and ecological zones. Covering an area about I l5 miles square, the pictures assist the Forest Service in measuring changes in growth and health of forests.
