New Data Backs Design Values
New long term performance data show that Dricon fire retardant treated plywood, exposed for extended periods of time at 170'F, can provide strength equal to industry-accepted values for plywood at normal exposure temperatures.
Roof temperature monitoring has shown that the temperature of roof sheathing used in dark roofs can rise to as high as 170'F for short periods on sunny days throughout 90% of the United States. A correlation was established between actual high temperature experience and accelerated exposure. The Dricon fire retardant treated plywood panels were subjected to elevated temperatures for a period equivalent to 30 years service.
From the data collected, span ratings were determined for panels from thicknesses of 5/16" to 7/8". Using Dricon FRT plywood, roof decks can be designed based on these ratings, according to a company spokesman.
The manufacturer nevertheless recommends that designers provide adequate ventilation and, where necessary, place insulation on top of the roof deck - or use roof coverings with low absorptivitywhen specifying their FRTW.
SAtllPtES of Dricon fire retardant treated plywood underwent the ASTM static bendino test to determine strength.
