Retailers Bullish For 1990

Forty-five percent of U.S. building material retailers think their sales will improve in 1990, and another 390/o expect steady sales. Retailers are most optimistic in the west and south, and least so in the northeast.

Seventy percent ofthe 600 dealers surveyed by Random Lengths said they expect to pay more for wood products in 1990 due to environmental disputes tightening the supply of raw materials. Retailers complained about price volatility of wood products, and several said they plan- ned to carry less inventory and place tighter control on purchasing in I 990.

Western dealers are more likely to buy direct from mills than retailers in other parts of the country, though 600/o indicated they go to wholesalers for more than half of their lumber needs. Dealers in the northeast are more likely to buy through co-ops and wholesalers, and 25% said they receive all lumber products via reloads, distribution centers and cargo docks. Most of the lumber purchased by southern retailers is shipped directly from manufacturers.
