Home Depot To Add 61 Stores In California

In an $850 million expansion program, Home Depot will open 61 stores in California by February 2000, bringing its total to 156 locations in the state.

Of the 61 new stores, two each will be built in the San Joaquin Valley and along the Central Coast,24 in the Bay Area and 33 in Southern California.

In Orange County, for example, Home Depot now operates 12 locations, including recently unveiled units in Laguna Hills, Garden Grove and Yorba Linda. They will open in Cypress this year and in Brea, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Lake Forest, La Habra, Rancho Santa Margarita and San Juan Capistrano in 1999.

Others to open this year include

Payless Casts Off Bankruptcy

Payless Cashways, the nation's fifth largest building materials retailer, emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization after an uncommonly brief 135 days.

As part of the closing, approximately 54Vo of the common stock of the new Payless Cashways was issued to the bank group led by the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.

The company's secured lenders and members of the official creditors' committee also selected a new slate of directors.

David Stanley relinquished his role as chairman. but remains c.e.o. and Susan M. Stanton remains president and c.o.o. They are joined on the new board by interim non-executive chairman Peter G. Danis. Boise Cascade Office Products; David M. Chamberlain, Genesco, Inc.; H.D. Cleberg, Farmland Industries; David Gundling, Hagemeyer Foods; Max Hopper, Max D. Hopper Associates; Donald Roller, ex-U.S. Gypsum Co., and Peter M. Wood, ex-J.P. Morgan & Co.

Their plan calls for Payless to spend $153 million on capital expenditures by the end of 1999, while reducing its interest expense from $60 million in 1996 to $29 million by the year 2000. They'll be relying on a "Dual Path" strategy, with stores focusing on either pro customers or serious d-i-yers.

The chain operates 164 stores in 20 states under the names Payless Cashways, Furrow, Lumberjack, Hugh M. Woods, Knox Lumber and Contractor Supply.

Fairmount, Van Nuys, Woodland Hills, Pomona, Lancaster, Simi Valley, Goleta, Santa Maria, Chico, West Sacramento, Napa, and East Palo Alto.

The company attributed the expansion to a resurgent California economy and homeowners' increasing willingness to spend money on repair and remodeling projects.

In addition to 61 new locations. larger replacement units will be added in Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Fremont and Milpitas.

"Rail transportation of our products throughout the Western and Southern regions is only slightly better now than it was at the early part of the century."
