Manufactured Housing Gains

Manuf actured housing will account for 370/o of the housing starts in 1995, compared with 28s/o in 1982, according to William Harden, senior market analyst, Predicasts, Inc.

"factory-built housing, whether a mobile home or some other type, may be the standard method of producing housing, with the site-built house limited to the high end of the market."

Mobile home shipments, which now account for almost 5090 of all new single-family homes priced under $80,000, will increase almost 690 annually. By 1995, shipments will reach 500,000 units a year, or 3390 of total single-family starts. As the average pricetag on a new conventional home continues to skyrocket ($83,900 and climbing), the less expensive mobile home will benefit.
