Siding Continues Steady Climb

Demand for siding products is forecast to inqease 4.7Vo armually through 1997, due to a rejuvenated U.S. construction market, according to the Freedonia Group.

Pent-up demand for new housing and continuing repair and replacement will fuel gains in the residential sector, which accounts for about 70Vo of siding demand. Siding growth will also reflect an aging stock of existing homes, expanding d-i-y activity and the continued development of siding products witlt enhanced performance, aesthetic appeal and durability characteristics.

Prices for siding products will increase well below the general rate of inflation due to changes in product mix, as low-cost vinyl supplants metal and wood, and decelerating market growth opportunities, which are creating a more price-driven environment. As a result, dollar value gains should only slightly exceed the predicted 6.87o annual unit growth.

Among siding materials, vinyl will show the best gains over the intermediate to long-term. Plastic and metal panel siding will enjoy above-average growth, gaining market share from other siding materials.

The South Atlantic, Mountain and Pacific regions will offer the best growth opportunities for siding, benefiting from a healthy pattern of growth in population, employment, business formations and economic activity in general.

Residential Roofing Sales Growth

Residential roofing demand will increase to 130 million squares by 1997, but taper off as housing strrts drop after that year.

An aging housing stock which will require new roofs and continued advances in product design and performance will contribute to the growth, The Freedonia Group reports. The replacement/improvement segment of the residential roofing market will use 86 million squares in 1997 compared to 44 million squares for new housing.

Growth opportunities for roofing will be best in the South Atlantic, Mountain and Pacific regions.
