Lowe's Boosts Sales, Gross Margin

Lowe's sales increased lTVo to $1.2 billion for second quarter 1993. Retail sales improved 2.37o and contractor sales grew 37o for a74Vo retaill26%o contactor mix. LIFO gross margin for the second quarter was 23.55Vo compared to 23.247o in the same quarter last year. Selling, general and administrative expenses were l4.78Vo of sales comparcd to l5.89vo last year.

Store officials credited the Everyday Competitive Pricing (ECP) srarcgy which has been in effect for one year for increasing sales and margin dollars and driving down expenses as a percent of sales, thus creating an upward leverage on earnings.

Lowe's reported increased sales in home water systems, yard, patio and garden, kitchen cabinets, horne decor, tools, fans and air conditioners.

High Awareness In Treated Survey

In the treated wood industry's annual July Consumer Awareness Program Survey, 88Vo of retailers and 707a of wholesalers indicated high awareness levels of safe handling procedures for working with treated wood.

However only 30Vo recognized ttre name Consumer Awareness Program (CAP) as compared with 547o last year. Although name recognition was low, 78Vo of the retailers said they either display signs or distribute consumer information about treated wood. All wholesalers familiar with the program said they distribute Consumer Information Sheets to each purchaser of treated wood.
