If you stop buying their products, the producers will not have the necessary income to finance the continued improvement of their forest management and the chances of the forest lands being converted to alternative uses increase dramatically. You should continue to buy the products you need, but question your supplier about their origin. Responsible importers who are members of the International Hardwood Products Association (IHPA) endorse the Target 2000 program and support the work of the Tropical Forest Foundation. If you have any questions about the advisability of purchasing a product from the tropical forest, ask your supplier if he is a member of IHPA. Also ask him about his commiunent to favor producers who practice good forestry management.

In the August edition on page 13, I noted an article regarding metrication. Metric sizes for softwood lumber will be included in the American Lumber Standard when it is published later Ois year. Copies of the standard sizes with conventional units and their metric equivalents are available from the American Lumber Standard Committee.

Incidentally, I know of no proposal to call a 2x4 - 50x100. Actual metric sizes are to be used, i.e..38x89.

John Martin Tully, 67, president and chairuun of the boad of Anderson-Tully Co., Memphis, Tn., died Sept 16, 1993, in Memphis.

Born in Memphis, Mr. Tullyilined the company in 1948 and was named president in 1967.

He was also p'res. of Patton-Tully Transportation Co., Memphis, a past president and director of Southern Hardwood Lumber Association, directa of National Hardwood Lumber Association and direcor of National Forest Products Association.

Thomas Carr Slaytora 45, president of Saunders Building Supply, Inc., Danville, Va., was killed July 17, 1993, on his farm in Danville when the tractor he was riding overmrned. A native of Danville, he joined Saunders Building Sumly in 1973.
