"Twistered" Timber Goes West
Timber damaged from a tornado that swept through Nashville, Tn., will be milled by a Northern Californiabased firm for registration as SmartWood Rediscovered Wood.
On April 16, 1998, a twister swept through the grounds of The Hermitage, onetime estate of president Andrew Jackson. During the brief but destructive rampage, many
200-year-old trees were downed or uprooted.
Under an agreement, Plywood & Lumber Sales, Inc., Emeryville, Ca., agreed to salvage and mill the timber according to standards set by the Rainforest Alliance, an environmental organization that manages the SmartWood Rediscovered Wood program.
In addition, the wholesale distributor will give the Ladies' Hermitage Association l}Vo of the profits from the sale of the wood, enabling the preservation group to plant new trees and sow seedlings.
Customers who buy the milled eastern red cedar, cherry, hackberry, maple, poplar or walnut will receive a certificate of authenticity and a book about The Hermitage.
Ace Launches Pilot Program
Ace Hardware Corp. has launched a 12-18 month pilot program to promote licensed plumbers and electricians to its customers.
In conjunction with Waco, Tx.-based franchise provider The Dwyer Group, the program entails referring customers to a Mr. Rooter or Mr. Electric franchise.
The program is being tested in two Chicago-area stores, but may be expanded.
