Engineered Wood Components Are Big Business For Retailers

Hundreds of retail building materials dealers are diversifying into the engineered component business as demand for floor trusses, roof trusses and wall panels increases across the U.S.

Southern pine is the no. I species of lumber in the truss market because of its extra strength for longer spans in residential, non residential and light commercial construction. Retailers find that more of their contractor customers are switching to floor and roof trusses, because these components offer quality engineered construction with substantial labor cost savings.

The Southern Pine Marketing Council has published several detailed case studies which highlight design and construction advantages of engineered wood components.

A Marriott Courtvard Hotel which saved over $100.000 in framing costs by using SP rooftrusses and wall sections is the subject of one case study. Burger King, Hardees, Shoney's Restaurants, nursing homes, life-care facilities, strip shopping centers and bank branches are profiled in other studies.

Many of the testimonials from architects, retailers and contractors point to the all-weather capabilities of engineered wood components. One project architect noted that besides the cost-savings of Southern pine trusses, "work can proceed in freezing or rainy weather that would normally shut down concrete construction. "

Causeway's Millwork Showroom

Causeway Lumber Co., Fort Lauderdale, Fl., is converting an office/ warehouse area into a 4500 sq. ft. millwork showroom due to open in October.

Windows of all types and over 90 different doors will be installed in vignette settings. Moulding, millwork and builders hardware also will be showcased. There will be "no similar facility in the tri-county area," according to Keith Hendee.

Designed to be an exclusive architectural products showroom, the facility may be opened to the retail trade later.

Tom Tarkleson, who heads up specialty sales for Causeway, will be responsible for staffing the showroom.
