The Moving Target Moves On

The latest figures on the American house remind us that U.S. homes have changed remarkably in less than a generation. It's not your father's house, anymore.

The differences can have a sizable impact upon anyone supplying materials, products and services.

The National Association of Home Builders reports that in 1973 new houses averaged 1,600 square feet. Today, it's more than 2,200 square feet. It is more than likely they have central air conditioning, four bedrooms, a freplace, a family room, a swimming pool and a garage for at least two cars. Bare bones starter homes are increasingly rare.

Today, nearly half of all new homes have 2.5 bathrooms; in 1973 it was 1970. Less than a quarter had four or more bedrooms, now a third do. Fireplaces have gone from 34Vo to 6OVo. What formerly was considered a luxury now seems a requirement.

There is a parallel with many products as the richness of American life continues escalating. In

autos, appliances and electronics, the deluxe model is most popular, just like housing. The spartan, do-without world of the past seems far removed from today's pampered consumer.

In housing, a number of factors have come together to move buyers upmarket. A sustained period of prosperity with its higher salaries, consumer confidence, sense of job security, low unemployment and low mortgage rates has enabled homebuyers to enjoy a move up.

While lot sizes are smaller than they were in 1988, environmentalists still complain that a selfish public is using land for new homes that enviros feel should be made off limits for all but natural critters. We suspect that the number of potential homebuyers who will sacrifice their chance for a new home for the Kangaroo Rat, for instance, is pretty small.

Whether you supply raw material or finished products, be aware that dramatic changes in housing may well require equally dramatic changes from your side of the equation.

PRESSURE TnEATERS

I he big got bigger in Building Products Digest's

' I fifth annual production ranking of the nation's top

pressure treaters. The top eight treaters increased production by an average of 24o/o, led by #8 Commonwealth Wood, whose 52Vo increase vaulted the company nine notches.

The top three producals-IJnlvelsal Forest Products, Great Southern Wood Preserving and Southeast Wood----expect to break away further from the pack, all adding new treating facilities since mid-1997.

Overall, 20 of the Top 25 showed increases, three remained steady, and only two suffered decreases. A few companies dropped out of the ranking completely. In October, former #15 International Paper got out of the treating business, selling its plants in Mineola, Tx., and Pleasant Hill. Mo.. to Southeast Wood. Soon after. last

year's #23, Perry Builders, Henderson, N.C., shut down. The departures made room in the Top 25 for two first-timers, Exterior Wood and Madison Wood Preservers.

Increases also are strong in the West, even as Western leader McFarland Cascade expands eastward. It recently began leasing a plant in Broken Bow, Ok., purchased a facility in Electric Mills, Ms., and closed its Bozeman, Mt., pole treating facility.

Companies are ranked by production of lumber, timbers and specialty products. Firms exclusively treating poles, pilings, railroad ties, etc., are not included. Abbreviations include FRT (fire retardant) and WR (water repellent).

All data were provided by the companies themselves. While every effort was made to ensure full accuracy and completeness, a handful of treaters elected not to participate in this survey.

IURING its 75-year history, I-fwholesaler McGinnis Lumber Co., Meridian, Ms., has been bigger and more diverse, but business has rarely been better.

McGinnis Lumber Co., Meridian, Ms., was founded by J. Earl McGinnis in January 1922. McGinnis had moved to Meridian from Bowling Green, Ky., in l919 to join MeadSidebottom Lumber Co. After three years as a bookkeeper with the small wholesaler, he figured he knew enough about the wholesale lumber business to try it on his own.

Fortunately, 1922-1923 were prosperous years in the U.S., so the young company capitalized on good economic conditions and enjoyed instant success. Meridian was the center of a large area of lumber production with abundant supplies of prime virgin southern pine lumber available. Quite a few manufacturing plants were located in Meridian because of the fine rail transportation network that the city had to offer. McGinnis established a close working relationship with many of these manufacturers and made arrangements to represent them in the sale oftheir products to his customers in the Midwest.

As the company grew and prospered, McGinnis decided to manufacture as well as wholesale lumber. During the late 1920s and early 1930s, he operated several mills in west Alabama and southeast Mississippi. Prosperity aboundeduntil the Great Depression hit. Financing several million feet of inventory to keep the mills running put McGinnis deeper into debt. At

Distribution patterns

also were changing, especially for western species.

the same time, volume for the wholesale business fell sharply. McGinnis' bankers panicked, and in 1932, he was forced to liquidate his inventories and close his manufacturing plants.

The company was bent but not broken. Despite lean years during the Depression, the company was able to stay out of bankruptcy.

At the end of the 1930s, as World War II loomed on the horizon, prosperity returned to the economy. The Depression had made a bitter, indeli-

Thriving and survrvrngfor 75 years

ble impression on McGinnis, however. He lost interest in becoming a lumber producer, and future forays into manufacturing were much smaller in scale. He operated a planing mill in the early '40s, but sold it shortly

he established the company as a prime source of quality western forest products, he assembled a network of 30 commission lumber representatives throughout the Southeast and Midwest. Within three vears. the company had become one of the largest and most successful wholesalers of western forest products in the Southeast.

McGinnis Lumber Co. continued to be a major supplier of western species over the next 30 years. By the mid-1970s, as southern pine lumber began to reestablish its reputation in the marketplace, the company began actively repositioning itself as a major supplier of the species.

after the end of the war. During the 1950s and 1960s, the company also financed a number of small mills in return for exclusive sales arrangements. Primarily, though, the firm has operated as a direct shipment wholesaler.

ln 1949, James E. McGinnis, Jr. joined his father in the business. He worked in various departments for about 18 months until he was called to serve in the Korean War. Upon his return from the service in 1952, he gradually assumed management of the company during the next two years, as his father's health was beginning to fail, preventing him from devoting full time to the business.

In the mid-1950s, James McGinnis saw the opportunity to develop a market for western lumber products in the Southeastern U.S. At the same time, he recognized that these products could not be effectively sold over the telephone or through the mail. So, as

By the time a third generation of the family, James E. "Jim" McGinnis III, joined the firm in 1980, distribution patterns also were changing, especially for western species. With the advent of reload centers and railroad deregulation, distribution centers began promoting the concept of just-in-time delivery. This made it difficult for the company to continue to sell its primary customer base. the retail lumber dealer. So gradually, McGinnis refocused on building business with industrial customers, particularly for southern pine and hardwood species. In early 1981, McGinnis established a still-substantial export business to the Caribbean.

The change in strategy from becoming a high-volume, commodityoriented type firm to a supplier of quality specialty products has been a good decision for the company, which is now enjoying some of the best business in its entire historv.

rnHE WOOD preserving industry,

to a certain extent. is an "invisible industry" because distributors and users generally are not aware of CCA treated products' long history of scientific testing, commercial use and proven performance.

The situation creates easy entry into the marketplace by competitors touting unsubstantiated claims about their products. Beware of any long term performance claims made by the manufacturers of new building products that only have a few years of field testing or only limited commercial use. In many cases, their claims are muted by disclaimers in the fine print on product literature.

CCA's low-key background also allows the dissemination of alarmist information about treated wood without supporting valid scientific data.

And that's why it's important that everyone involved with building products be able to answer the most commonly asked questions about CCA pressure treated wood.

Q *t use pressure treated lumber?

A Wooa is a plentiful and economical building material, but, untreated, it is subject to attack by insects,

microorganisms and fungal decay. Pressure treated wood is protected from these natural predators, ensuring it will last longer.

Q Wnut is pressure treatment?

A P."rru." treatrnent is a process by which a chemical preservative (chromated copper arsenate) is forced deep into the wood's cells in a closed cylinder. Following treatment, the preservatives are "fixed" into the wood and resist leaching into surrounding soil or water. CCA is used to produce lumber that is clean, odorless and environmentally safe to use as recommended around people, pets and plants.

a Aren't chemically treated products dangerous to use in and around the house?

A eft., extensive review during the 1980s, the EPA concluded that CCA treated wood did not pose an unreasonable risk to children or adults, either from direct contact with the wood or from contact with surrounding soil where some releases may have occurred. The EPA has not identified any significant health con-

cerns from short- or long-term exposure to arsenic residue from pressure treated wood.

0 Where should pressure treated wood be used?

A fn" wood can be used outdoors wherever wood building components require resistance to termites and fungal decay in decks, fences, gazebos, playground equipment, docks, marinas, utility poles, mine shafts, bridges, agricultural stakes, raised garden becis, landscape, agricultural uses and a host of other applications.

Q t it safe for children to play on playground equipment and decks made of treated wood?

A CCe treated wood is widely used for playground equipment. Tests show negligible risk that children who lick their hands after playing on pressure treated wood playground equipment would be exposing themselves to any carcinogenic risk.

A water repellent or wood sealer for pressure treated lumber may be applied periodically to reduce cracking and splitting of wood and the likelihood of children getting splinters.

Q Do"rn't treated wood emit vapors or fumes and that's whv it's banned from indoor use?

A Treated wood does not emit vapors or fumes and may be used indoors for all applications where protection against termites and fungal decay is needed. It should not be used for countertops or cutting boards.

Q Uo* can I use treated wood for a picnic table, if I can't use it for a countertop?

A N"ith", treated or untreated wood is recommended for countertops, but treated wood picnic tables are fine because picnic tables are primarily

practices for handling treated or untreated wood. Inhalation of sawdust can cause nose and throat irritation. Protecting your eyes from any foreign matter is advisable. Wearing gloves provides extra protection against splinters, and good personal hygiene should be practiced in the shop and on the job. Hands should be washed after handling any type of wood or after doing any type of construction work.

used for serving prepared food while a countertop is used primarily as a cutting surface for raw food. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not recommend any wood for use as a cutting surface since food particles are likely to be embedded in its porous surface, encouraging bacterial growth.

Q Oo", pressure treated wood cause cancer?

A CCe feated wood has never been shown to cause cancer in humans nor has it been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals. In fact, epidemiology studies of treating plant workers and carpenters show no increased risk of cancer as a result of exposure to the preservative treated wood.

Q *" Consumer Information Sheet says I need to wear a dust mask and other protective apparel when sawing treated wood and that I should wash my hands and clothing after use. Does this mean handling the wood is dangerous?

A fn" guidelines posed in the CIS reflect common sense and good safety

After a review. the EPA determined that the benefits of pressure treated wood products outweighed any potential risks. The nation's wood preserving industry agreed to undertake a voluntary Consumer Awareness Program to apprise consumers that Consumer Information Sheets, similar to manufacturers' instructions on hundreds of other products, are available. CIS have been available at retail outlets and from manufacturers since 1986.

a Should treated products be kept away from food and water?

A Treated wood should not be used where it may come into direct or indirect contact with public drinking water, except for uses involving incidental contact, such as docks and bridges. Do not use treated wood for countertops, cutting boards, those portions of beehives which come in con-

A en ffeated wood should be disposed of by ordinary trash collection or burial. If burned, toxic chemicals may be produced as part of the ashes. Industrial users may dispose of treated wood in commercial or industrial incinerators in accordance with state and federal regulations.

Q Oo the chemicals leach out of the wood?

A A unique process occurs with pressure treated wood during and after the pressure treating process which fixes the chemical preservative so it is virtually insoluble. Leaching is negligible and the finished product does not pose a threat to people, pets or plants when used as recommended.

a Can treated products be used around gardens?

A P."rru." treated wood is perfectly suitable for building raised beds, terraced gardens, grape or tomato stakes, flower bed edging, planters, retaining walls, trellises, arbors, garden furniture and compost bins.

Mississippi Building Material Dealers Association's 2? directors and officers voted unanimously to stop paying National Lumber & Building Material Dealers Association dues and become an independent association. Due to budget constraints, MBMDA did not attend last year's NLBMDA convention and expected a SOVo hike in National dues this year.

Association executive William Lee said the move. effective March l. will not affect MBMDA's daily operations, services or status as an association. "We've been through a slack period in Mississippi," he said. "We may recohsider rejoining (NLBMDA) in the future."

Also during MBMDA's 72nd annual convention and trade show in Biloxi, Lee Nabors was installed as new president. lst v.p. is Steve Breland, 2nd v.p. Attendance at the show was disappointing-reportedly because competing events were held concurrently, so next year's convention will be moved back a week. to Feb. I 1-13. 1999

Fiber Cement Plant Coming

F.C.P. Inc. plans to build a $24 million, 150,000-sq. ft. fiber cement siding plant in Summerville, S.C.

Targeting a summer of 1999 startup, the facility will produce 150 million sq. ft. of Cemplank and Cempanel siding products annually.

A subsidiary of 103-year-old fiber cement producer Etex Group of Belgium, F.C.P. opened its first U.S. plant four years ago in Blandon, Pa., and began looking last summer in the Carolinas and Georgia for an additional site due to strong demand for the product in the Southeast. The new location was chosen in part because of its proximity to cement suppliers.

In addition, Joseph A. Barrow has joined the company as national accounts and marketing manager.

New Window Certification

Two new certification programs covering energy efficiency and proper installation of windows, doors and skylights have been launched.

Energy Star is a voluntary partnership between the U.S. Department of Energy, the EPA, manufacturers, retailers and utilities to help consumers

easily identify the most energy effi:ient products on the market.

To receive an Energy Star label, products must be rated, certified and labeled for both U-factor and solar heat gain coefficient by the National Fenestration Rating Council.

Manufacturers also want to ensure performance of their products after they're out of their hands, so the American Architectural Manufacturers Association will certify the installation of doors and windows.

Larry Livermore has joined AAMA as installation program manager. He will create a program for training installers, developing standards for residential and commercial facilities, testing, certification and monitoring.

Universal Sets Five-Year Growth Plan

Universal Forest Products may be the largest wood treater in the country, but it's not hanging its hat on that distinction.

Instead, the company is embarking on "Performance 2002," a growth plan centered on strengthened customer relationships, innovative product development, and new merchandising programs-all designed to double the company's current sales of $1.1 billion in five years.

"We're going to continue to grow and look for opportunities in every corner of our business," says Phil Rogers, national retail accounts sales manager. "We intend to increase our market share in total volume by, for instance, improving our current facilities and acquiring successful companies that make strategic sense for our company."

The company added a treating cylinder to its Moultrie, Ga., plant last fall and purchased a treating facility in Lodi, Oh., to serve Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

"In other words," says Rogers, "we're going to put even more distance between Universal and the other

nine guys in the Top Ten."

Universal already stands out as one of the few public national companies in the wood treating industry. Headquartered in Grand Rapids, Mi., the company operates 51 facilities in 44 locations, blanketing North America. "We have back-up plants that can service customers; they can relax knowing that a problem at one facility doesn't translate into a problem with our service to them," says Rogers.

As part of its growth strategy, Universal is enhancing current facilities and acquiring other proven businesses, to expand its capabilities-not only in wood treating but also in engineered building components for conventional site-built residential and commercial construction.

Since its founding nearly 45 years ago, Universal has become a number one supplier to the manufactured housing market, providing pre-cut lumber components and the majority of the roof trusses for the nation's leading manufacturers. It also is a top supplier to the home center retail market, with products such as its Fence Fundamental. Deck Necessities.

Lattice Basics, Storage Solutions and ProWood pressure treated lumber.

As the company continues its growth, it is increasing its rnanufacturing capabilities, creating another competitive advantage. "If we have fencing that's manufactured onpremise, we can just take it over to the treating cylinder," Rogers says. "We don't have to outsource it."

What's more, Universal can get a larger variety of products on the truck, lowering customers' inventories and improving their turns, while remaining price competitive.

Kerr-McGee To Sell Plants

Kerr-McGee Chemical LLC, Oklahoma City, Ok., has agreed to sell its six crosstie treating plants to N.Y.-based private merchant bank Castle Harlan. Inc.

Kerr-McGee is divesting its entire forest products operations-including treating plants in Columbus, Ms.; Texarkana, Tx.; Springfield, Mo.; The Dalles, Or.; Indianapolis, In., and Madison. Il.-to concentrate on worldwide oil and gas exploration and production and titanium dioxide pigment operations.

Huber Starts Up EWP Mill

Huber Engineered Woods has begun production of engineered strand wood products at a new continuous press facility in Spring City, Tn.

With an annual capacity of 380 mmsf (3/8" basis), the mill offers a virtually unlimited range of custom lengths in thicknesses from 3/8" to l-5l8".

Engineered Wood's Meteoric Rise

North American structural wood panel production rose 2.7Vo last year to a record 36.93 billion sq. ft. (3/8" basis), a mark that is expected to be eclipsed again this year, reports APA-The Engineered Wood Association.

It was the fourth consecutive record-setting year and the sixth year of volume increase since a l99l mini-recession.

This year production should rise about zEo to 37.55 billion ft.

Certain engineered wood products will enjoy even stronger demand growth. North American production of wood I-joists, which rose 26Vo last year to 627 million linear ft., should approach I billion linear ft. by 2000.

Wood I-joists' share of the residential floor markets is forecast to reach 5OVo-6OVo in the next five to seven years, compared to about 33Vo today.

LVL production increased 20Vo last year to 37.7 million cu. ft., and should rise another 25Vo this year.

Although U.S. glulam production fell about 2Vo last year to 315 million bd. ft., by 2000 production is expected to rebound by l3%o. APA attributes last year's decline in large part to a new consumption tax and the economic slowdown in Japan, a leading glulam export market.

The structural wood panel industry's excess production capacity, meanwhile, appears finally to be lessening. Capacity rose from 35.95 billion sq. ft. in 1994 to 42.29 billion ft. last year, as some 20 new mills were built. Approximately 3.6 billion ft. of new capacity-nearly all of it OSB-was added last year alone. However, 2.1 billion ft. of mill capacity also closed.

The structural wood panel industry's production-capacity ratio is expected to rise from 86Vo in 1996 to 9070 this year, two percentage points better than the industry's historical average. For OSB, the ratio is forecast to climb fromT9Vo in 1996 to 88Vo.

While APA foresees a slight decline in housing starts this year, residential market demand for structural wood panels should rise with an increase in per-unit consumption.

International market demand (excluding trans-border shipments between the U.S. and Canada) climbed 5Vo in 1997 to 2.47 blllion ft., or 6.7V0 of total industry production. Foreign market demand is anticipated to increase to 2.52 billion ft. this year, provided the effects of the Asian crisis are short-lived. About 30Vo of U.S. and Canadian offshore shipments of structural wood panels go to Asia, particularly Japan. Europe accounts for more than 5OVo of foreien demand.

HWI Renamed Do lt Best Corp.

Building materials buying cooperative Hardware Wholesalers Inc. has changed its corporate name to Do it Best Corp.

According to president and c.e.o. Mike McClelland, as its sales of lumber and building materials grew, the company's original name no longer entirely represented its business. "Today, our membership is made up of hardware stores, home centers and building supply stores-the entire home improvemenl sector," he said. "We're also exploring non-traditional ways of selling products through industrial/commercial sales, our members' Internet Web sites and more. Do it Best Corp. covers all those facets."

The new name also supports its Do it Best retail stores, private brand products, truck fleet and Web site. "It's only natural that our corporate name and logo reflect our member programs and retail identities,"

McClelland said.

Several consumer focus groups came to that same conclusion, which helped reinforce the decision to switch names. The co-op also conducted a formal member survey to review names suggested by members, consulted outside retail design and advertising firms, and put it to the vote of the board of directors.

Founded in 1945, the Fort Wayne, In.-based co-op serves more than 4,000 retail members in the U.S. and 3l foreign countries.

Palco OKs Headwaters Plan

Pacific Lumber Co. has reached an agreement that would allow it to log on about 192,000 acres in Humboldt County, Ca., while protecting the 7,480-acre Headwaters Forest and 12 adjacent parcels.

After months of negotiation, Palco and parent Maxxam Inc., Houston, Tx., reached an agreement in principle with the federal government on a multi-species Habitat Conservation Plan and with the state on a Sustained Yield Plan covering more than 200,000 acres.

"This is an important milestone for The Pacific Lumber Co. as it will give added stability to our operations that we have not possessed for the last l0 years," said Will Riegel, v.p.-sales & mktg. "This will translate into more predictable and continuous production, particularly in our architectural grades of redwood and Douglas fir uppers."

Door And Window Sales Dip

U.S. sales of doors and windows are expected to dip slightly this year before rebounding to new heights by the year 2000, according to the National Wood Window & Door Association.

Last year, approximately 48.9 million prime windows were sold in the U.S. A 3.5Vo decrease to 47.2 million units is predicted for 1998 due to a cooling in the housing market, but sales should top 50 million by 2000.

Door manufacturers shipped 12.3 million residential entry units in 1997, but expect to ship 11.8 million in 1998 before recovering to 13.2 million by 2000.

Residential passage doors, with sales of 30.4 million units last year, will follow a similar pattern.

Knowledgeable Sales Staff Increasingly lmportant

More do-it-yourselfers are choosing retailers that staff knowledgeable salespeople, according to the annual American Express Retail Index.

When asked to list the top reasons for choosing a home improvement/ home furnishings retailer, 29Vo cited

knowledgeable salespeople, a 6Vo increase from 1997. Fair prices (66Vo), selection (48Vo) and quality merchandise (39V0)led the lisr.

The Index monitors retail customer spending and is based on a random national poll of more than 1,000 homeowners.

The study credited a strong economy and stable interest rates for allowing do-it-yourselfers to perform their own home improvements. Of those surveyed, 39Vo revealed they plan on tackling home improvements themselves this year, up \Vo from 1997. Not surprising, the budget for performing these home improvements registered an increase as well, up l}Vo to $2,929. Over one-third (34Vo) wlll begin their projects this month.

This year, the most common projects are interior decorating and refurbishing (59Vo), renovation and remodeling (32Vo), landscaping (29Vo), gardening (27Vo), mandatory maintenance (24Vo), exterior decorating work (22Vo), expansion (l4Vo), and restoration (l3%o).

Approximately lSVo of remodelers

will refurbish at least one room in the house, with attention shifting away from last year's top room, the living room, to the bedroom (27Vo). The living room came in second at l7%o.

In the kitchen, 43Vo will install new cabinets, with the majority choosing wood (907o) over any other material. About 6l%o wlll add new countertops, choosing formica and ceramic tile over Corian and granite surfaces. Nearly half (45Vo) will install new appliances, choosing white or almond over trendier colors such as stainless steel and black. Other popular additions include a breakfast table, stools, work center or island, and baker's rack.

Throughout the rest of the house, the majority of d-i-yers are following either a neutral (6OVo) or blue/green (46Vo) color scheme, installing wallto-wall carpeting (24Vo), and adding a variety of lighting accents (25Vo) to a contemporary design theme (3l%o). An additional l9%o will add or convert a room into either a home office or home entertainment room.

New screw dares to be square

Just when you thought the square drive screw had disappeared, it surfaces with new and improved features.

Square drive screws, also known as the Robertson head, were developed in Canada during the early 1900s for the industrial and commercial markets. They were commonly used in the furniture and mobile home markets, but eventually failed in retail due to poor marketing and low consumer awareness.

iirtihth

"It's the Rodney Dangerfield of screws; it doesn't get any respect. (Our) new screw and marketing will change this," says a spokesperson for Prudential Building Materials, Atlanta, Ga., which is introducing a square drive ceramic-coated exterior deck screw.

Squate drive screws have many advantages over the traditional Phillips head screw, including the elimination of head spin-out. maxirnum positive drive and, if needed, easy screw backout.

Phillips head screws can strip or spin out during installution, removing the head's weathcr-resis(ant coating and exposing bare metal which can rust and corrode. A square drive head enables the square bit to better engage in the screw head for increased torque to the screw for a tighterjoint. It also becornes quite difficult to remove a stripped Phillips head screw.

Prudential took the square drive screw concept and added feltures: a flat head with countersinking nibs to aid in a neat, flush countersinking application; a 2-to-l thread ratio lbr draw tight installation; high coarse

threads for superior holding power; a slotted shank tip to aid in wood penetration, and a platinum green ceramic finish to provide an extra layer of corrosion protection.

The screw is ideal fbr pressure treated lumber and even plastic composite lumber. In species where appearance is of prime concern, stainless steel fasteners should be used.

To increase consumer awareness, Prudential has created a point-of-purchase shelf-talker and color-coded packaging that shows the proper size bit to use.

"The next time an environmentalist warns us of disaster, we ought to ask: When was the last time your prediction was right?"
- Walter Williams, syndicated columnist and professor of economics, George Mason University, Fairfax, Va.

GSI treaters conference

I\TOT EVEN gale-force winds and I \ El Niflo-driven rain could keep the treaters away from CSI's 13th annual Wood-Preservers' Conference in Palm Springs, Ca.

Held Feb. 14-17 at Marriott's Las Palmas Resort and billed as "Valentines Day in the Heart of the Desert," nearly 100 of CSI's wood treating customers took part in wind-whipped golf, sumo wrestling and an elegant evening at the Empire Polo Grounds.

The highlight was a series of educational workshops on such topics as

how attorney-client privilege protects treaters, the harmonization of regulations affecting U.S. and Canadian treaters, and the view of a former EPA inspector. Experts from CSI's Technical, Environmental and Engineering group offered tips ranging from the speed-up of plants to the maintenance of facilities operation manuals.

Said attendee Scott Steinkamp, Southern Indiana Wood Treating: "It was great to get a government perspective on our business, as well as the views of others in the industry."
