The great bulk of pressure treated wood being sold meets or exceeds required standards. Still, experts claim that as much u 20s/o of all pressure treated wood is not properly dried, is not inspected or stamped and has not been treated correctly. While this sizable fraction concerns those interested in industry standards, it needn't be a problem at the distribution level as extensive information and assistance is readily available. What to look for in pressure treated products is daailed in this issue and in numerous pieces of manufacturers' literature. Associations and other industry organizations are poised to quickly resolve any ques-
tions dealers and wholesalers might have. ln most cases thes€ serviccs are free and as close as a telephone.
As with any manufactured product, a few minutes spent reading the manufacturer's instructions can avoid hours of product problems. Nothing cornplicated here, just a fav simple steps to follow. Cover your treatd lumber in slorage, don't burn scraps, discard them, and launder separately clothes worn while handling the wood. Use eye goCgles and a dust mask when sawing. This last caution actually applies to any lumber. Care in use and handling can avert the problems.
People who purchase products and find themselves unable to make them work are often told, "if all else fails, read the in*ructions." The same applies here. Only do it first because otherwise any difficulties you encounter with pressure treated wood will be your own fault.

Q: Such as?
A: Many of the precautions are the same as working with untreated wood. For example, whenever power sawing or machining treated wood, goggles and a dust mask should be worn, and, whenever possible, these operations should be performed outdoors. Also, after working with treated wood, and before eating, drinking or smoking, you should wash up with soap and water. In short, users should follow good hygiene and common sense safety precautions.
Q: What method should be used to dispose of pressure treated wood scraps? Can they be burned?
that, before moving in, any dust that might have been created during the building process should be swept up.
Q: Is it necessary to wear sPecial clothing or launder workclothes in a special way when working with pressure treated wood?
A: No special clothing or gloves need be worn when working with CCA treated wood, but if sawdust from the treated wood accumulates on your clothing, you should wash your work clothes separately from other household laundry.
rfHIS PAST summer, the federal I Environmental Protection Agency concluded more than six years of intensive study of the major wood preserving chemicals, creosote, pentachlorophenol, and the inorganic arsenicals. Publicity concerning those regulations has created considerable confusion for consumers and building supply dealers, so Building Products Digest asked David kwis, vice president of government affairs, Society of American Wood Preservers, Inc., Falls Church, Va., to clarify the situation for us.
Since most of the pressure treated wood sold by building supply dealers has been treated with arsenical preservatives, like Chromated CopPer Arsenate (CCA) or Ammoniacal CoPper Arsenate (ACA), we asked Lewis to concentrate on how the regulations will affect those preservatives.
QUESTION: First of all, is treated wood safe to use and handle?
ANSWER: When properly used and handled, CCA treated wood makes an ideal and safe building material for almost any use where decay or termites are a factor. Although the chemicals used to treat the wood become fixed in the wood and highlY leach resistant, there are certain precautions that users should take when handling the wood.
A: The best and simplest way for consumers to dispose of their scraps is by ordinary trash collection or burial. Consumers shouldn't burn treated wood. The problem with burning isn't with fumes, but, as I mentioned earlier, the chemicals used to treat the wood become fixed in the wood. When the wood is burned, these chemicals concentrate in the ashes, which does present a disposal problem. Large quantities of treated wood from commercial or industrial use, such as construction sites, may be burned in incinerators, in accordance with state and federal regulations.
Q: Is is safe to use Pressure treated wood inside a home?
A: Wood that has been treated with waterborne preservatives, such as CCA or ACA, may be safelY used almost anywhere inside of a home. The use of treated wood inside of homes has increased tremendouslY over the past 15 years. Throughout North America, there are now over 200.000 homes that have been built with the Permanent Wood Foundations system (PWF), using treated wood for the foundation instead of masonry/concrete block. The trend toward closing up homes to make them more energy efficient has also increased the need to use more treated wood indoors because of the resultant moisture problems. The only precaution that we would recommend is
Q: Is it safe for children to play on pressure treated wood decks or playground equipment?
A: Since the chemicals used in the waterborne preservatives are fixed in the wood and are not absorbed through the skin, children may safely play on CCA treated wood. Consumers should make sure though that the wood they buy is "visibly clean and free of surface residue." This is an industry standard, which has been adopted bythe EPA.Only wood that meets this standard should be used where skin contact is apt to take place.
Q: Is it dangerous to have Prolonged skin contact with outdoor furniture made of pressure treated wood?
A: Again, for arsenically treated wood (e.9. CCA or ACA) there is no problem. However, wood that has been treated with pentachlorophenol or creosote, should not be used where

Dealers reveal treated wood sales secrets
I UMBER dealers and retailers are bselling more and more pressure treated wood each year. The key to those sales, most dealers say, is displaying the appealing end product.
Building projects, sometimes right in the retail store, are the best illustrations of possible end uses of the wood productinspiring the would-be carpenter into action, reported themajority of dealers responding to a recent survey conduaed by Koppers Co., Inc.
"Our deck displays generate interest in pressure treated wood," said Jim Henderson Jr., v.p., merchandise, for six Stacy Building Materials and Home Centers operating in the Mobile, Al.,area.
"Day in and day out, we sell a lot of treated lumber." he said. "For example, one of our biggest yards sells about two to three truckloads per weeknot including fence board and posts. In the spring, we move about three to four truckloads of the fence material, about one in the fall and one in the winter." The stores
stock almost all lumber dimensions, from 2x4s to 6x6s.
"We advertise 12 months a year; literature helps also," he continued.
"We feel that our treated material is a marketable item, not a commodity, because it's a quality wood product. Our sales continue to increase, proving to us that our marketing techniques are working."
Despite the sluggish local economy in the Beaumont, Tx., area, Sonny Sherman, president of C.L. Sherman & Sons, says that pressure treated wood is still a strong item.
His store is a prototype of the National Retail Hardware Association's Home Project Centers. Part of the store design includes a huge display home, erected in the center of the building.
"We just completed a yearJong renovation in Decernber," said Sherman, "and we've been successful in getting high customer counts. The display home is appealing, especially to the d-i-yers. There are all types of
home building designs shown, including a large deck on one side built with Wolmanized w@d."
The outside store displays were also redesigned, including large woodframed canopies painted with a new multi<olored logo. Strerman said he used the treated wood for the canopy frames because "I don't plan on building them again, and it's another way to demonstrate the features and advantages of pressure treated wood.
"It's a really colorful set-up," he continud. "We think our store's one of the most up{odate retail centers in the country."
Sherman said he can already see improvements in sales due to the renovationparticularly the large deck display.
"The idea is to sell the antire project, not just a 2,x4," hesaid. "We sell only #l appearane grade, because we want to emphasize product quality. We feel that pressure treated wood is the business of the future. With every new season. sales of Wolmanized

Dennis Betts, divisional merchandising manager for Homecrafters Warehouse, Inc., shares that opinion.
"We moved in excess of l0 million feet in 1984, our most dramatic increase from past years," he said.
Homecrafters operates abou nine warehouse stores (two in Denver, two in Nashville, two in Memphis and two in Louisville) as well as 29 smaller Homecrafters retail stores in those markets. At the warehouse stores, Homecrafters sponsors "backyard seminars," beginning in March, on

how to build decks, fencing, sheds, even a dog house.
"Wood is the beginning of a back- yard project," said Betts. "In turn, Wolmanized wood helps to sell the product, especially with the 30-year guarantee." (When identified by the label, the wood is guaranteed to resist rot, termite attack and decay for 30 years.)
"We like Wolmanized wood because it's a clean treatment," said Al White, vice-president and general manager for Prestige Lumber Company, Orlando, Fl.
"Also, we've had a problem with Formosan termites from South Amer-
ica," he continued. "Newspaper stories about the infestation really scared some people. We've been reassuring our customers that Koppers confirmed that Wolmanized wood is effective against the insects."
White said Wolmanized wood sales amount to about 1090 of his retail business. But. as with all other raailers interviewed, his sales continue to increase.
"I sell about two trailer loads every week," he said. "Most sales are special order from builders, for architectspecified residential decks. Decks are quite popular here in Florida."
White said he doesn't sponsor deck clinics, but he'd like to start. "I often end up serving as a design consultant ,' ' he said. "I'll sell a load to homeowners building decks and give advice on different construction techniques."
"We built an elaborate, four-tiered display deck in the store, with every wood item we could put on itfencing, hand-railing, hangers and planters," said Tommy Jefcoat, adv. manager for Stahlman Lumber Co. in Natchez. Ms.
"It worked out so well that people came in wanting to buy the whole display," he said. "We held on to it for a few months and then we finally gave in. I'll probably have another one built this spring."
Jefcoat said that he sells about two truckloads of Wolmanized wood per weekall #l grade lumber, due to customer preference. Most is for waterfront decks and walkways along the many lakes in the area, where he says pressure treated wood is the most popular building material.
"We advertise Wolmanized wood a lot," he said. "We conducted an advertising campaign for our prefabricated sandboxes and gave away free
sand. Merchandising techniques like that help lure customers into the store. "
Cheney Nicholson, president of Capital City Lumber Co., Raleigh, N.C., said his company boosts sales of pressure treated wood by sponsoring about 12 deck building clinics every year as a community service.
"The deck clinics are very worthwhile," said Nicholson. "We get tremendous inquiries about the wood, and our how-to literature does a good job helping people to learn about backyard building projects and about the wood itself.
"We'll also be pushing pressuretreated wood this spring with advertising, which has proven very beneficial in the past," he said.
Dick Jennings is general manager for Oran Huston Lumber Co. in Oklahoma City, Ok., a company that deals mostly with the building conuactor.
Sales of both Dricon and Wolmanized pressure treated wood are steadily increasing, he said.
But Jennings said he began a retail effort for Wolmanized wood two years ago, with a small advertising campaign. He said he was encouraged by the results.
"Our operation is more of a wholesale lumberyard, not a home center store," he said. "But we think Wolmanized wood is an excellent product to go rightto theconsumer. We'll continue to encourage more retail selling."

Fir no, a new prociuct, but irecause it has become a viable alternative to other methods for meeting fue codes, its market is increasing.
Men have been trying to make wood resist flue since the time of the Pharaohs, when EgyPtians charred the surface of lumber so it would not readily catch ffue.
The fire retardant treated wood industry in the U.S. dates to the late l8CIs when the Navy required its use in construction of certain parts of its warships. In the early l90s New York City became the first metropolitan area to make etcensive use of fue retardant treated wood in building construction. ln 194243 nearlY 90 million b.f. of lumber and PlYwood were fue retardant treated for use in hangars for Navy blimPs and other construction projecs.
Since that time the demand has declined, limited partly by unawareness and by problems of hygroscopicitY and corrosiveness. But fhicon wood, a recent development of Koppers Co., Inc., has overcome many of the liabilities. It is said to be virtually no more hygroscopic (ikely to absorb moisture from the air) than untreated wood, even in interior environments of up to 9590 relative humidity. A mixture of organic and inorganic chemicals, Dricon does not contain ammonium sulfate, the corrosive contributing compound found in earlier formulas.
Encouraged by imProvements in the product, ftily architects and homeowners are interested in using a material which will limit fue, reduce building costs in some cases and qualify for lower insurance rates. Dealers should be making those in their community aware of the availability of FRT lumber, encouraging its use with literature, advertising and informative seminars.
New construction using Dricon can be found in many geographical areas. In the mountains of Avery County' N.C., a two-story, three-bedroom
home is being built at Elk River featuring all FRT wood framing. Across the state at Ocean Isle Beach, a twostory, four-bedroom beachfront home is being constructed out of FRT framing.
A west coast development firm saYs it's saving approximately $l million on a $30 million condominium project using FRT wood as a fue code acc:eptable alternative to concrete and concrete slab. FRT lumber is being used for studs and exterior wall framing for a 22A unit retirement residence complex in Terra Linda, Ca.
Steve Dean, Dean Lumber Co., Gilmer, Tx., is building his own house out of Dricon trusses,lumber and plywood. "My insurance company tells me that they will insure my house as if it were a metal building," he reports. "That's going to save me 2USOo/v every year in insurance costs. Also I found that for termite resistance, I could save 600 per fmt in l0 Year chemical insecticide treatments by using Dricon." (Although Dricon treating chemicals are not sold as wood preservatives, tests have shown them to have excellent decay and termite resistant properties.)

provides an excellent example of a treating company concerned with producing only the highest quality materials. Equipment, procdure and quality controls are all structured to provide the best product possible.
The Plymouth, N.C., plant utilizes the vacuum pressure system which is considered one of the most efficient ways to treat wood. The treatment cylinder is the heart of this process which draws and maintains an ultrahigh vacuum to remove the gases which are normally in wood fiben. When the vacuum is broken, atmospheric pressure forces the chromated copper arsenate pres€rvative liquid (CCA) into the wood. As the amount of solution absorbed is registered on meters in the system it is possible to apply extra pressure for greater chemical impregnation. The final step is another vacuum to draw off excess chemicals and clean the wood before it is removed from the cylinder.
Their cylinder, which is said to be the largest of its type on the east coast, measures 6 ft. by ll2 ft. It is capable of treating landscape timbers, outdoor deck lumber. both lumber
Included in the system are three 25,(m gallon work tanks that can provide all levels of treatment. Stock is treated to one of three levels: .25 lbs. of CCA€ per cubic foot of wood fiber for above ground and interior applications; .40 lbs. of CCA{ per cubic foot of wood fiber for ground contact and exterior applications or .60lbs. of CCA€ per cubic foot of wood fiber for below ground applications, specifically the Permanent Wood Foundation.
Environmental safeguards are important factors in the design of the equipment. The vacuum pressure system functions as a closed system. It is nonpolluting and is claimed to be employee safe. All EPA and OSHA standards are met or exceeded in its design and operation.

Shipment of carload or truckload orders including mixed loads of plywood and untreated lumber along with treated loads is mill direct.
Although quality control is monitored by the American Wood Preservers Bureau and the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau frequent tests are made on site to insure quality. Using the standard tests approved by the American Wood Preservers Association for determining penetration of copper{ontaining preservatives, they are able to instantly check the quality of their treating.
This test, which uses Chrome Azurol S concentrate and sodium acetate with water as the reagent, is applied to split or freshly cut surfaces of treated wood. A deep blue color reveals the presence of copper, giving an indication of the depth of the preservative retention.
Testing is done whenever there is any doubt about the level of penetration.
"Since landscape timbers and posts are green, it is tougher to control the penetration of the CCA solution. Proper drying prior to treatment guarantees quality treatment," notes Bob Gregory, a Weyerhaeuser pressure treating expert. "Lumber is not as big of an issue because it is treated kilndried so that the moisture content is right, making it easier to treat."
At regular intervals the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau inspectors take random borings from the floor
stock. These are sent to the American Wood Preservers Bureau laboratory for analysis. Pressure treated wood produced at Plymouth carries the AWPB quality mark which indicates the year it was treated, the trademark of either the AWPB or SPIB as a certified agency, the applicable AWPB quality standard, the proper exposure conditions, the treating company and plant location and whether it is dry or KDAT. lnterpretation of this stamp gives the dealer as well as the consumer the complete profile of each piece of treated wood.
Pressure treated posts produced by Weyerhaeuser carry a metal tag attached at the base stating "Weyerhaeuser pressure treated to AWPA Std." This tag guarantees 30 years of trouble-free service to the purchaser. Weyerhaeuser lumber bearing the AWPB quality mark is guaranteed for 30 years with a written warranty.
All treaters who are affiliated with the American Wood Preservers Bureau, the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau or Timber Products Inspection, Inc., follow the same stringent quality control. Only the finest pressure treated wood carries the AWPB quality mark.
Weyerhaeuser also is a member of the American Wood Preservers Association and the Southern Forest Products Association as are many other treaters.
These associations are quality conscious and support the treaters in their efforts to produce materials which will satisfy everyone connected with pressure treated wood: dollars for dealers and guaranteed confidence for consumers.

IEGISLATIVE reports of the second hessionof the40th Oklahoma Legislature, which is now in session, and calls for action will be issued exclusively by the retail lumber and building material dealers legislative action committee of Oklahoma.
This joint committee is supported equally by the OLA and the Mid-America Lumbermens Association. It is directed by nine retail dealers who represent both associations.
Repeating as 1985 chairman is Bill Carey, Jr., Carey Lumber Co., Oklahoma City. Members are Robert Henkle, Grand Country Homeworks, Grove; Bud Blakley, Blakley Lumber Co., Davenport; John Collins, Collins Lumber Co., Ada, and M. J. Lewis, Duncan Builders Supply, Duncan. How you can save on ffi a, delivery costs
I!{EDUTIES of any manager are to
I plan, execute and monitor the assignments the company has made with the personnel and assets provided. In the case of the dispatcher, the people are drivers, yard men or loaders, and the assets are trucks andlor fork lifts. The major planning steps in managing delivery zue listing and logging what is to be delivered, when, where and to whom, load planning and make-up and, finally, routing and scheduling to accomodate the customer and, at the same time, minimize company costs.
The Delivery Log, plain and simPlY, is a list of things to be delivered along with to whom, when and where. It's a listing of things to be done recorded at the time
they are received by the dispatcher. It gives anyone in the company a ready reference on what's to be delivered. It is the framework of a load planning process. It need not be complicated. Lined sheets with columns for date,/time received, customer, location, order and time/date needed are adequate.
Load Sizes & Make-Up Very fewordas placed by one customer for delivery to one job site at one time will fill a 16' to ?I' flat bed or dump truck. Major exceptions to this are framing loads andlor full house sheet rock orders. These ordinarily occur on average in less than 2090 of all the deliveries made. The dispatcher needs time and support from top management to plan full truck loads going in one general direction or carrying, if not fully loaded, at least enough of a load for four stops, and more if possible. The fuller the truck, the lower the cost per delivoy.
Taking an order by phone, putting it alone on th€ frst available truck and sending it out to satisfy one customer will probably do just that, but it is the most expensive delivery to execute.
Scheduling & Routing A reasonable delivery policy provides for orders received in the a.m. to be delivered in the p.m. and vice versa. This allows not only time enough to enter, pick and stage an order, but also should provide for enough orders going in the same direction to fill one truck or have at least four stops on it. Since most contractor customers begin their day at 7 a.m., do€sn't it make sense, if your company wishes to serve your customer best, that you begin your daily delivery scheduling to coincide with your customer's work day? Think about it. Such planning by the dispatcher makes more delivery time available daily. Furthermore, it will make the picking, staging and loading a routine matter and should, if properly executed, insure that the company's trucks and drivers are productive.

Foresl Products Sales Rise
North American Wholesale Lumber Association members distributed $7,175,527,397 in forest products in 1983, an increase of over $1.7 billion in their sales of forest products in 1982.
Figures compiled from a comprehensive annual sales survey of 340 wholesaler members active in 1983 showed direct sales of $4,569,759,669 representing 63.7V0 of 1983 sales. This total includes sales out of reload centers, remanufacturing plants and treated wood sales, which are arbitrarily defined by NAWLA as direct shipments. Sales out of regular distribution yards stood at $2,ffi5 ,7 67 ,728 , or 36.3% of sales.
In 1982, direct shipments accounted for 67.5V0 of sales, while 32.590 of sales were out of distribution yards. In addition, although sales dollars out of remanufacturing plants rernained fairly constant at 5276,325,554, footage through wholesaler remanufacturers increased by 15Vo to 915,229,5'70 board feet.
As the dollar value of forest products distributed by NAWLA wholesalers increased in 1983, so did the daily investment in receivables and inven-
tory. On June 20, 1984, NAWLA wholesalers were providing over $700,000,000 in accounts receivable and nearly $500,000,m0 in distribution yard inventory, representing approximately $ 1,200,000,000 of financing to the forest products industry on a daily basis.
Investment in inventory by NAWLA wholesalers increased by nearly $100,000,000 over lasr year. This is attributed to the growing trend among distribution yard wholesalers towards a higher value product mix. In addition, NAWLA wholesalers who are 10090 direct mill shippers indicated that they have inventory investments totaling $23,000,000, which suggests they have reload center ownership or material at treating plants on a daily basis.
Trucking was the primary mode of transportation used by NAWLA wholesalers in 1983 to distribute forest products, accounting for 48.690 of all shipmentsi rail transportation, 28 .4Vo , followed by piggyback, l2.6Vo. Deliveries by truck out of reload centers represented 6.1 9o of forest products shipments; water transport stood at 4.3V0.

As of October l. 1984. 3890 were direct mill shippers; 16.490 indicated 7590 or more of their sales were out of distribution yards; 12.990 were 5090 direct mill shippers and 5090 distribution yard shippers. A nearly equal number of NAWLA wholesalers, 16.3Vo total. said that 6090 or 75Vo of their sales were direct mill shipments. Only 7.390 said that they were l009odistribution yard shippers. In all, 2l I firms operate a total of 4M distribution yards, with average annual sales per yard of nearly $6,500,m0. How to be a pressure treated lumber expert

ir REATED lumber is one of the l "hottest" products in reail building materials today. In the south, CCA preservative-Pressure treated southern pine accounts for morethan one-third of all production. Some analysts predict it will increase to 5090 by 1990.
Pressure treated lumber increases your store trafFrc because it has made consumers more conscious of outdoor living projects. In addition to the lumber itself, pressure treated southern pine offers unique add-on sales opportunities through extra volume in power tools, hand tools, hangars, nails, hardware, Paint and stains. Many dealers offer a contracting service to design and install outdoor decks and fencing for their customers.
The three wood sPecies which are best suited for pressure treating are southern pine, Ponderosa Pine, and red pine. Southern pine is widely regarded as the most "treatable" species because of its cellular struclure which permits deep, uniform penetration of the CCA preservative treatment.
Fir, hemlock, and other sPecies usually need to be incised before the chemicals will penetrate the wood under pressure. Incising is a series of slits along the grain of the wood which assist chemical penetration.
Treated southem pine is an economical substitute for durable species such as cedar and redwood, which may be in short supply in the future.
Nobody knows exactly how long pressure treated southern pine will last. In government sponsored exposure tests, 2 x 4 stakes buried in the soil in the 1930s are still in sound condition.
Several manufacturers guarantee their pressure treated lumber for decades. These warranties are possible because the CCA preservatives forced into the wood under Pressure form a
chemical bond within the wood cells.
Just because treated lumber has a green color, it may not meet the durability and end use requiremerts which your customers require. Since all treated lumber is not the same quality, retailers need to know which products me€t industry quality *andards.
Pressure treated lumber should be stamped to indicate the retention level, which measures the amount of chemical treatment per cubic foot of wood. The higher the retention number, the more severe exposure conditions the wood can stand.
The various retention levels are intended for specific end uses. These are the designations you will see on the stamp:
for two stamps. The fint is the grademark which relates to the $ructural quality of the lumber. (Such zts Southern Pine Inspection Bureau or Timber Products Inspection.) The second is the treated stamP of the quality control agency. It indicates which agency inspected the lumber after treating, what retention level the treated lumber received, and what kind of preservative was used.
Most of the 3 billion board feet of pressure treated southern pine produced annudly goes into outdoor sundecks, fencing, Yard structures, planters, permanent wood foundations, bridge timbers, and other industrial and farm uses.
To get the most from Pressure treatd lumber, remember that:
(l) treated lumber should have covered storage at your retail yard or home center.
(2) treated wood scraPs should be discarded in the trash instead of being burned.
(3) clothes which have accumulated sawdust from treated lumber should be laundered before reus€, and washed separately from other clothing.
(4) when sawing or machining treated lumber (or untreated lumber), eye goggles and a dust mask should be worn.
(5) you should use hotdiPPed galvanized or stainless seel nails and fasteners with treatd lumber-not aluminum or carbon steel nails.
The treating industry follows a three-level system of quality control. One level is the American Wood Preservers Bureau, the national overview agency, which certifies a number of quality control agencies. These agencies form the second level of the industry, monitoring and testing quality control standards at the individual treating plants. The third level is the in-plant quality control maintained by each treating company.
When examining a piece of pressure treated lumber, you should look
(6) you should predrill holes or dull the sharp points of your nails to reduce the possibility of splitting the lumber when nailing near the ends.
(7) a coat of water repellent sealer should be applied to the treated lumber after it is in place on a construction project. This will improve the appearance and durability. After you brush on a coat of water repellent, you can let the lumber weather to an attractive gray color. Or, you can let it searcn for a few weeks and apply a coat of Paint or stain.
In summary, pressure treated southern pine lumber will increase your sales and profitability today and in the future, if you purchase quality products which meet your customer's needs.

Outlook Strong For Vinyl Siding
Vinyl siding should continue its penetration of the remodeling and new construction markets in 1985 and throughout the remainder of the 1980s.
Growth is expected in shipments of vinyl siding and accessories, provided the economy remains on an upward trend and there is sufficient homebuyer demand to prevent a sharp decline in new housing, according to the Vinyl Siding Institute.

Osmose Refines Marketing
Osmose Wood Preserving Co. is launching a national brand awareness campaign for 1985 with a newly redesigned bright yellow end tag marking each piece of treated wood.
The end tag is supplementary to their Preferred Dealer Program and technical hot line ( I-800-522-WOOD).
According to John Horton, director of advertising and communications, this number has generated tens of thousands of calls with over 8990 of the callers wanting to know the names of the Osmose Preferred Dealer near them.
Horton says a growing number of lumber dealers, both large chains and independent yards, have commented on the need to do more to distinguish and identify their product to the contractor and the general consumer.
"In conducting marketing research," he adds, "we found that not only were do-it-yourselfers eager to have the opportunity to purchase a branded pressure treated wood, but that retailers were just as eager to have the opportunity to sell a branded product, supported by a full-scale national marketing effort."
Free plans, dubbed the Osmose "Great Plans Series," another phase of the campaign, have been revamp-

ed. They present not only line drawings of projects, but also step-by-step photos of construction details.
An original series of how-to videos accompany these plans. Professionally filmed, produced and narrated, the full<olor video tapes take consumers step-by-step through the construction process in a "home deck clinic."
An important feature of the plans and videos, notes Horton, is their modular features. "There are mixand-match modular components for add-on planters, benches and rail
styles. Consumers can obtain project materials lists for these variations."
Going hand-in-hand with the new plans and videos is a large advertising campaign aimed at both consumers and the trade. A unique feature of this national public relations campaign is "The Osmose Handyman," a professional media spokesperson who will travel the nation appearing on television and radio talk shows, giving how-to tips-and, of course, the Osmose 800 number for free plans and dealer referrals.

Woodwork Association's New Name
The National Woodwork Manufacturers Association (NWMA) is now known as the National Wood Window and Door Association (NWWDA) following a vote by members at their 58th annual meeting in Tucson, Az., recently.
The change is felt to better describe the products manufactured by the membership, eliminating the confusion created by the term woodwork which includes many products not represented by the members. The name change will be phased in during the first eight months of 1985 and become the official name in August.
Stewart Lemke, senior vice president of Norco Windows, Hawkins, Wis., and newly+lected president of the association, said "The wood window and door industry has progressed to sophisticated, engineered products, and the new name better benefits the products produced by the members."
"The new name will be an aid to specifiers and users of wood windows and doors seeking product information," said John Shoemaker, executive vice president. "It will help clear up a lot of misunderstanding about what NWMA represented."
Other officers elected at the Feb. 2 - 6 meeting are first vice president, William E. Hughes, Crown Door Corp., Tampa, Fl.; second vice president, John M. Chupik, Temple Products, Inc., Temple, Tx.; third vice president, David L. Farnsworth, SealRite Windows, Inc., Lincoln, Nb.; and John J. Stanton, treasurer, American Door Distributors, Inc., Needham, Ma.
In his outgoing remarks, the retiring president,William W. Ruddick, general manager, Simpson Door Co., Seattle, Wa., said, "We have experienced tremendous growth in 1984 with 23 new members. Add this to the 22 new firms who joined in 1983, and it is clear to see we are moving ahead and have become the voice of the wood window and door manufacturing industry. "
Dataline Adds Service Facilities
In a continuing effort to provide a nationwide sales and support network, Dataline Corp. recently added sales and service facilities in 19 locations throughout the western United States.
New service locations include Los Angeles, San Diego, Ventura and Bakersfield, Ca.; Houston and San Antonio, Tx.; St. Louis and Kansas City, Mo.; Denver, Co.; Seattle, Wa.; Portland and Eugene, Or.; Oklahoma City, Ok.; and Cheyenne, Wy.
"These additional service facilities will make Dataline more accessible and responsive to the needs of our rapidly growing customer family," commented Gerald F. O'Connell, president of Dataline.
A western regional sales office has been created in Dallas under the supervision of western regional manager John Zepka. The western sales territories are divided into the west coast district, based in San Francisco; southwest district, Dallas; and Rocky Mountain district, Denver. Marketing pressure treated wood is a team effort
r GGRESSIVE innovative market- Iing is the key to increased sales of pressure treated wood. A retailer cannot overemphasize the how, why, where, when, what and who of using pressure treated materials.
Often a retailer feels he is out there alone trying to develop his market with little help from anyone, but this is not so. He is really part of a team. Organizations such as the American Wood Preservers Association, Society of American Wood Preservers, Inc., American Wood Preservers Institute, American Wood Preservers Bureau, National Lumber & Building Material Dealers Association, Southern Forest Products Association and Western Wood Products Association all have information and help available for him.
Materials and assistance from these associations run the gamut from help in training sales people to literature and advertising aimed at educating the consumer and turning him into a user of treated wood products. Companies such as Champion International Corp., Georgia-Pacific Corp., Koppers Co., Inc., Osmose Wood Preserving Co. and Weyerhaeuser Co. can help a retailer with literature,
building plans, training for sales people or clinics for consumers.
Good examples of the type of help available to retailers from many manufacturers and distributors are "Pressure Points" published by Houston Chemical/Woodtech, Houston, Tx., and "The Gilrner Mirror," a brand new publication from Dean Lumber Co., Gilmer, Tx. Both publications contain news of the company as well as product data. In addition, both companies make themselves available for visitors and tours.
Lastmonth Dean Lumber Co. hosted a pressure treated wood seminar for is customers and its customers' customers at the Gilmer Country Club. The allday meeting, which was open to anyone engaged in the purchase, sale or specifying of treated wood, included lunch and a tour of the Dean treating plant and manufacturing facilities. Those attending received certificates, T-shirts and caps as well as a lot of knowledge and information about treated wood.

Two uses of the Permanent Wood Foundation System (the new name for the All-Weather Wood Foundation System) are ripe for promotion and development-basements for stick built houses and foundations for manufactured homes. Both uses offer benefits for the building and the manufactured home industries.
The Permanent Wood Foundation can save builders time and money, says the Wood Products Promotion Council. With this established, it is now up to the wood industry to accomplish acceptance by the builders. Associations involved in the Wood Products Promotion Council program, including the American Plywood Association, Southern Forest Products Association and Western Wood Products Association are concentrating on expanding builder use of treated wood foundations.
With this type of support, a dealer can develop interest and use of the PWF in his own market area. Literature from the Wood Products Promotion Council and the cooperating associations can be a starting point. Informed and armed with such materials, sales people can begin to make sales presentations on PWF. Interest and knowledge can be increased by asking an association fieldman to conduct a seminar for builders, architects and specifiers in the area.
The product and the market exist. It's up to the dealer.

Willamette's Davis Retires
As Richard Davis, v.p. of Willamette's Lumber & Plywood Sales Division, closes his 39-year forest products career, he can be proud of the contributions he has made, not only to Willamette. but to the entire wood products industry.
He's a respected leader in the industry and a strong supporter of the wholesaler in the distribution of wood products. He's a valued member of several wood products associations and has taken an active part in supporting the industry. For more than 30 years, he's played a key role in the development of Willamette Industries' approach to sales and product promotion.
Dck Davis' Willamette roots run deep. In 1946, he began working for the Santiam Lumber Co. in Lebanon. Or., then partially owned by the Davis family. He started Santiam's first retail division and turned to mill sales in 1949, as assistant to the sales manager.
In 1951, Willamette Valley Lumber Co. purchased an interest in Santiam Lumber. Willamette Valley and several related firms merged to form Willamette Industries. Inc.. in 1967 and Davis was named general sales manager.
As Willamette started up its first plywood mills in Louisiana in 1962,
he led the introduction of the company's sheathing products into new markets. He also spearheaded the development of Willamette's retail lumber division in 1974 which reached $20 million in annual sales durine a nine year period.
Davis was named vice president of Willamette's Building Materials Group in 1978, and has continued to direct the lumber and plywood sales division for both the south and the west.
"Dick has made a major contribution to our company and the forest products industry over the years," notes William Swindells, Jr., president of Willamette Industries, Inc. "He's been a good businessman and colleague as well as a good friend."
Davis has an unsurpassed record of service to the American Plywood Association's Field Service Advisory Committee. He has been a member of the committee for more than 18 years and served as chairman from 1969t972.
Dck has built the kind of unwavering support for the wood products industry that will continue far beyond his retirement from Willamette Industries. His day-today routine will definitely change, as product promotion, management responsibilities and business trips are replaced with leisurely overseas travel, skiing, golf and tending the family "farm." But Dick promises to maintain relationships with the many people he has worked with over the years.

Television I nnovations
A combination telephone,/television/AM-FM clock radio, a series of pastelcolored l0 in. diagonal color tv sets and five models with stereo adapter jacks for use with a new stereo adapter have been introduced by Quasar.
The telephone/tv clock radio reportedly allows the user to awaken to television programming, FM or AM radio, or an alarm or to go to sleep with the television or radio controlled by the electronic sleep timer. The telephone is said to feature automatic tvl radio mute and auto redial in addition to a ringer loudness control.
The new tv features remote control operation and new vivid colors. A five function remote control color coordinated miniature model of the set itself is included. Other features include a swivel base. LED channel indicators, automatic fine tuning, glare guard and an earphone jack.
The stereo adapter reportedly allows the user to receive stereo audio or second audio program wherever possible through any Quasar television equipped with a multiplex output terminal by attaching the decoder to the television and to a stereo amplifier and speakers, either the television's or an external arr;urgement. The adapter is said to sense and indicate the type of audio being received, stereo, mono or second audio program.
The adapter also fleatures a noise reduction system.

Said to be virtually indestructible, it reportdly won't swell, shrink, rot, rust or corrode and is impervious to water, salt, mud, oil, solvents, acids, caustics, grease, pitch and sunlight. The color is molded in, so that scraping, sanding and painting are not required.
The one-piece design eliminates welds or joints that come apart, as well as bars for children to climb or play on. There are no sharp corners and the surface won't scratch bicycles. Installation requires drilling four holes with the masonry bit supplied and hammering in the four security pins, also supplied.

SnapOn DoorTrims
A new trimming out option for onsite installation of the Benchmark Adjusta-fit steel frame and insulated door system has been introduced by General Products Co.
The pre-painted, snap-on metal trim can be used inside or outside, mixed and matched with wood trim.
Pre-punched holes in the frame allow the installer to screw in furnished clips. The metal trim is then snapped into place over the clips. Mitered corner locks use slit-fit reinforcements to assure proper fit and alignment of the header and side trim at each corner.
Programmable Thermostat
A new programmable microelectronic thermostat offering automatic 24-hour, seven-day-a-week control of heating and air conditioning equipment is from the Control Products Division of Johnson Controls.
It allows programming of specific temperatures for up to five different time periods during the day or night to help consumers conserve energy and save money.

A custom casement vinyl replacement window line has been introduced by Season-All Industries.
The 13 residential windows line, called NuPrime Comfort Casement, is said to offer higher insulation than other casement windows.
Features include a thermally broken frame and sash with 7/8 " double or triple-insulating glass, EPDM bulb weatherseal, heavyduty crank and hinge. Outside panes can be washed from inside the house.
Barbecue Grills On Wheels
Three different cart styles and a variety of grill and burner sizes are offered in the 1985 line of Charmglow barbecues.

Larry Grothues, president of M C and Tommy Grothues, vice president, have no intention of letting the growth of M G slack off. They plan to add a remanufacturing facility this year along with at least one more retail yard in Texas. Genstar Acquires 7 Plants from Bird
Purchase of seven plants from Bird Inc. has been completed by Genstar Corp., San Francisco, Ca', for approximately $50 million.
Asphalt roofing plants in Portland, Or.; Wilmington and Martinez, Ca.;Shreveport, La., and Charleston, S'C'; roofing granule facilities in Rancho Cordova, Ca', and Glenwood, Ar., and a fiberglass mat plant and granule facilities adjacent to the roofing plant in Charleston are included in the acquisition.
The acquisition gives Genstar the capacity to produce about 2.2 million tons of asphalt shingles per year, nearly double its present capacity. Adding these plants to those already owned in Arkansas, California, Georgia, lllinois, Minnesota and Texas, Censtar becomes one of the larger producers of asphalt roofing in the U.S. The company also is one of only three roofing manufacturers with granule manufacturing caPacitY.
Through its U.S. distribution centers, Bird will continue marketing many of the roofing products that will be manufactured by Genstar under various Bird trade names' The plants will also manufacture roofing under Genstar's Flintkote brand name. The Bird operations are now part of Genstar Roofing Products Co., a subsidiary headquartered in lrving, Tx.
Formaldehyde Emission StamP
Particleboard manufacturers are beginning to stamp formaldehyde emission grademarks on their products to comply with the recent HUD Manufactured Home Construction and SafetY Standards.
Under the direction of the National Particleboard Association, 25 plants in 14 states involving 14 manufacturers are certified to the HUD standard. The formaldehyde emission standard sets a maximum 0.3 parts p€r million level for particleboard.

Big Trading Firm's New Entry
Plateau Forest Products, lnc. is the name selected for a new trading firm in Albuquerque' N.M., set to open in early April- It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Forest City Trading, Portland, Or., which in turn is owned by Forest City Enterprises, Cleveland, Oh.
The president of the new firm is Wayne Mosby, Steve Kline is sales manager. Mosby previously had worked for Cascade Empire in Portland, one of eleven sister companies, including Plateau, owned by Forest City Trading. The others are Western International Forest Products, American lnternational Forest Products, Buckeye Pacific, Olympic Industries, Tampa International Forest Products, Birmingham International Forest Products, Richmond International Forest Products, Seaboard International Forest Products and Viking Forest Products.
Marketing plans call for Plateau Forest Products to sell a full range of forest products, with some emphasis on Southwest, inland species and SPF, targeting industrial and dealer customers. Sales will be to the entire country, concentrating on Southwestern and Southeastern areas.

CIGAR BOX CEDAR
In your article, page l0 ofthe February issue, about cigar box cedar, there is a question of using leaves to "locate the coniferous cedar." There are many timbers around the worldwhich go bythe name "cedar" in commercial trade. Generally they have been given that name due to the aroma they emit or the texture and density of the wood.
Botanically, the plants producing these timbers belong to a number of families and genera, including both gymnosperms (conifers) and angiosperms (hardwoods). The Mexican cedar in your article is a member of the Melioceae or mahogany family, being a species of the genus Cedrella which has species in most tropical and subtropical American forests.
Throughout its range the old growth cedro, as it's called in Spanish, is highly sought after for local use in furniture and cabinetry. The younger, faster grown
timber is still veneered and used in some areas of the world to cover cigars.

New Residents Need Homes
In-migration of new residents in Florida and Georgia is expected to stimulate the housing industry in those states.
Up to 30,000 new residents could set up households in Florida in 1985, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. Georgia added 50,000 new residents in 1984 with over half of them settling in Atlanta. While this growth may abate, it is expected to remain strong.
"Most of the ingredients for a healthy housing market appear intact: strong in-migration, declining mortgage rates. .expanding personal income and a low level of unsold new home inventory," Parker notes.

Many lumbermen can probably identify with the feelings of the management of the Seymour Lumber Co., Seymour, Wi., when they learned that it had taken 20 years and 22 days to deliver a bill to a customer in Pulaski, a town 12 miles away.
Harold Rudie Sr., 76, received the statement bearing a 50 stamp and Oct.2, 1964, cancellation in a routine mail delivery last month. The Pulaski post office suggests that it might have become lodged in a fold in the bottom of a bag or stuck under a piece of equipment.
Rudie thinks the bill was for materials used to put an addition on his barn. The lumber company apparent- ly had nothing printable to say, according to an Associated Press wire story.
Laundry Moves Upstairs
Latest trends in washers and dryers may affect dealers who handle appliances.
According to a Maytag Co. survey, homeowners are installing laundry equipment in kitchens, bathrooms and even bedrooms instead of basements and garages.
To accommodate this trend, appljance manufacturers are making their products smaller and unobstrusive. New stacked washerdryer units reportedly cut floor space required in half while still handling full size loads of laundry.

When you advertise, you typically use omnibus ads, ads which feature products of many suppliers. You then decide how to charge each suPPlier for his share of the ad. There's a right way to do that, and a wrong waY.
I recently visited with six of our largest customers and found to mY surprise that every one of them was doing it the wrong way, giving away co-op in huge chunks. Because theY were billed by the newspaper in lines or column inches, they were trying to figure the supplier's share in those same units. Then they could multiply that by their line rate (or inch rate) and get his share in dollars. All very logical, but a disaster in practice. For two reasons:
(l) Nobody, but nobody, can accurately prorate space in either column inches or agate lines. Each is entirely too unwieldy a measure to work with.
(2) Even when you correctly measure the space that way, you don't assign a share of the headline and logotype. You wind up only with a

There's a simple waY of measuring, though, that is easier, faster' more accurate, and which does automatically assign a prorated share of headline and logotype. Here's how it works.
First, throw away that printer's rule in agate lines. Get out your regular ruler in inches. Then follow these simple steps:
(l) Measure the width of a given supplier's portion of the ad (the part of the ad that advertises his products). Similarly, measure the dePth, and multiply the width by the depth to get the square inches. In all measurements, for convenience round only to the nearest quarter inch.
(2) In the satne way, measure the width and depth of the entire product

(3) Divide I by 2 to get rhe supplier's percentage of the product space.
(4) Multiply the cost of the entire ad by that percentage. That automatic_ ally determines his cost of the space occupied by his products, ptuj nis prorata share of all non_product copy.
One of the largest chains on the East Coast adopted this method recently. They found that it cut in half the_ time they used to spend figuring claims. And they also found tha-t onli two of their hundreds of suppliers de_ clined to pay prorata sharL-of non_ product copy.

Among fire retardant wood, author_ ities consider Dricon the stati_of_the_ art. It has been fully tested in labora_ tory and field studies. When properly treated, wood building components may be used with metal lath and plaster or dry wall for construction in structures classified as fire resistive. For roof decks, joists and purlins, Dricon wood qualifies for a Class i roof system designated by Underwiters Laboratories.
Use of fire retardant treated wood in building is sure to increase. The dealer who thinks ahead will inform himself and his employees and plan to be a part of the increasing market.

Lewis Vicken Jr., chairman of the board of Charles Ingram Lumber Co., died in Greenville, S.C., on Feb. 6, 1985. He was 60.
He is survived by his widow, Mary Alice Ingram Vickers, two daughters, his mother, five sisters and two brothers.
Tattletale Grey ls the In Color
Greys are the new neutrals for 1985 replacing beiges in new product offerings for home furnishing such as floor, window and wall coverings.
The trend toward gentle colors is not only fashionable, but practical, according to forecasters at Armstrong World Industries, Inc. With building costs increasingly on the rise, pastel colors make rooms in smaller homes appear larger.
With grey the neutral, mauve, rust and peach have evolved as primarY accents followed by burgundy, blue and teal as secondary accents. While grey will continue to dominate as the neutral part of the palette, the Armstrong panel agrees that greyed versions of other colors will become less and less grey over the next few years.
Colored greys like lavender-greY are the new direction. This influence, already being seen in fabrics, wallcoverings and accessories.
Red Paint Has Old Heritage
A centuriesold preservative paint for log homes may be available in this country if the efforts of Doris Muir, an advocate for log homes in Hartford, Tn., is successful in arranging to have it imported from Sweden.
Falun Red, claimed to resist fire, rot and insect damage, has been manufactured and in use in Sweden since 1250, according to Muir. It reportedly allows the wood to breathe and doesn't hide the grain.
A do-it-yourself recipe for the iron oxide and salicylic acid concoction was printed in Household, a Swedish publication, in 1762. The paint, which has no gypsum and is more like a stain, gets its name from the ancient copper mine at Falun.

The check when deposited by the dealer was returned by the bank because the account was clord. The dealer's attorney contacted the Commonwealth Attorney in the county whae the delivery was made and the individual was charged with a felony because the account had been closed on Feb. 6 and the check written on Feb. 8.
After hearing witnesses testify to this and that although some material was used on the job site, part of the material was sold to other persons, the judge ruled that by delivering material prior to accepting the check, the dealer had ercended credit to the individual and that the bad check was not a felony.
He then dismissed the charges.
