EROM TIIvtE to time, we have tried I to emphasize the importance of adequate personnel training in every retail yard regardless of size. I am not sure just what success we have had but I know this is the most important phase in the operation of any business.

I do know one firm who will not let a new employee represent them until they have had a six week training course. I have heard of several tv shows that last an hour but that are over a week in the making. I wonder how many of our lumber yards are as careful with their relations to their customers.

Usually we hire people at 7 a.m. and immediately turn them loose on an unsuspecting public. All three, the customer, employee and the firm, are cheated. Yes, a well trained employee is the most important factor in any inventory of assets and the best way to insure your supply of these people is to conduct a weekly one hour session where products, problems, prospects and people are discussed.

I don't know how many of you are having trouble with shoplifting, but it is an activity that is widely prevalent. You can't tell what they look like because there is no pattern. They look like you and me and any of our friends. At present juvenile offenders account for over 5090 of the shoplifting, but then there are plenty of others. Some of this may look like penny thievery, but in a low gross operation the slightest thievery can become major.

About all you can do is train your sales help to be alert and on the lookout.
