The Institute for Health in the Built Environment advances, integrates, and applies new knowledge from diverse scientific disciplines to support healthy individuals, communities and planet. Our mission is to develop new design concepts for the realization of healthy and sustainable inhabited space. We do this by forming unconventional collaborations that conduct research where architecture, biology, medicine, chemistry and engineering intersect and translate it into design practice through a consortium of invested industry partners with applied impact.

Executive Summary Dear Industry Consortium, Greetings from Portland, Oregon and the University of Oregon Institute for Health in the Built Environment! As we transition from final exams, studio reviews and graduation activities into a summer of focused planning, the excitement of May’s Build Health Event is still palpable and guides the development of our 2019-2020 research agenda.

In the following pages, you will find the Build Health 2019 meeting distilled into images, comments, questions, presenters’ responses, and a research agenda for 2019-2020. The comments and questions were posed by you during integrated research design break-out sessions and the presenter responses in this document are intended to be process-oriented in order to stoke further dialogue. These comments and questions were used by the member advisory board on the second day to help us articulate research priorities for 2019-2020.

The themes explored during the meeting include: human experience + perception, indoor biomes + chemistry, energy + human health and energy + mass timber. We were treated to a diversity of issues requiring attention in the built environment, ranging from first-hand medical accounts of healthcare-associated infections to Lisa Heschong’s keynote address on the importance of view in the workplace and the need for what she termed, “circadian snacks.”

At the conclusion of the meeting, President Schill spoke about the important work that this group is doing through the creative and collective investigation of industry and academia. New members, View and Hickok Cole, followed by presenting their goals and aspirations for joining the Build Health consortium and working with academia. Since the event, we are pleased to also officially welcome Microsoft to the Build Health consortium.

With such a tremendous start in the new research year, we look forward to the innovative outcomes that will ensue!

Consortium Course-related Topics of Investigation in 2019-2020 Design the Unseen (Fall Term, 2019) 1. CO2 and Cognition

Universal Design for Healthy Aging: Memory, Metrics and Mobility (Winter Term,2020) This course will investigate what it means to design across disciplines (Sports Product Design, Architecture, Interior Architecture and Art) with a focus on universal design for an aging population. At the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus and “form follows function,� how does big data change how we conceive of function? How does this influence the form of our designs? What role does color play in health, recalling memory and prompting mobility?

Build Health (Winter Term, 2020 - tentatively) We will use a research seminar format to tackle difficult questions facing industry in the pursuit of healthy indoor environments. We will engage with industry to describe a range of challenges, design micro research projects aimed at providing greater definition to the problems, and test alternate solutions. an environment that is close enough to reality that many lighting effects are perceived as realistic. As the technologies (both hardware and software) continue to develop, we expect to see synthetic virtual environments that feel more and more realistic – in terms of visual, auditory, thermal, and tactile inputs. - Siobhan Rockcastle Same glare in VR as in real space?

As of today, none of the VR HMDs (Head-mounted Displays) can reproduce brightness values high enough to cause acute glare discomfort.

That being said, our eyes adapt to the light levels surrounding us and we need more research to know if we can produce glare effects by subjecting participants to longer adaptation times in low-light.

If human eyes are adapted to a low-light range, we may be able to produce perceptibly uncomfortable light levels using a typical HMD. - Siobhan Rockcastle

Can we reproduce real-world conditions and maintain control?

With the technology currently available on the market, we cannot yet reproduce realworld lighting conditions.

Real-world lighting conditions would require that we reproduce brightness values above 100,000 cd/m2 and our brightest VR displays fall in the 300 cd/m2 range. Despite this limitation, our team speculates that we can produce

How does VR play into it? Make matched avatars if your avatar gets daylight is that good enough?

I could understand this question in multiple ways. This question might suggest that an avatar (virtual representation of oneself in VR) could navigate a virtual world and act like a moving light sensor to determine whether adequate light dosing was achieved by

that avatar in his or her built environment. Using simulation, we could map an avatars’ light exposure profile in a highly controlled manner – a compelling idea about how VR could be used to understand behavior and exposure without the complication of recording such behavior in a real world setting. This question might also suggest that VR could be used as a real environment (whether positive or negative) for participants to be exposed to light and view content. I would be wary of the later, although there is always the risk that this technology may be used as a replacement for real world experiences. - Siobhan Rockcastle

How to deal with equipment obsolescence?

This is a challenging problem.

Technology in the VR space is developing at a rapid pace – with new hardware and software released monthly. In the last 5 years, the market has grown from 2 MHD devices to over 250. Like any fastpace market, the only way to overcome this challenge is to stay connected to both industry and research communities and to upgrade equipment as regularly as possible to stay relevant. Older or outdated equipment may not serve a viable research purpose, but may still be used by students in an educational capacity. Siobhan Rockcastle

more windows are possible at the perimeter of any floor. To daylight a building to the greatest extent, make the floorplates relatively narrow. - Jeff Kline

What’s the performance metric we’re looking for?

For circadian light one metric will be Equivalent Melanopic Lux or something similar describing dose or exposure. This is the metric that the Well Building Standard uses.

Breaking this down further, we look at intensity – how much light – and how well the light spectrum matches the melanopic action spectra of the human eye. In terms of sleep metrics, see the answer to question #1 above. - Jeff Kline

How do we know if we’re successful?

How to measure sleep quality?

It is possible to measure some aspects with actimeters (think Actiwatch 2) but better data comes from more sophisticated polysomnography instruments (think EEG electroencephalography for brain electrical activity, EMG electromyography for muscle tone, EOG - electro-oculography for eye movements); however, there are trade-offs of flexibility and obtrusiveness between these lab grade devices or wearable sensors that can be easily deployed in the field. IHBE has been in conversation with sleep researchers at OHSU on this topic. - Jeff Kline, Mark Fretz

Why not include more skylights?

This is our viewpoint – let’s design buildings to be well daylit. Skylights will work as long as you are on the upper floor, and larger and

Objectively we’ll measure things like light intensity and spectrum and be able to say whether someone has or is likely to meet a standard. However, a metric for circadian entrainment and health may be more challenging. - Jeff Kline

Do dynamic tunable lighting schemes actually perform like outdoor daylight?

These systems work by changing an LED fixture’s color temperature by varying the relative mix of “cool” and “warm” LEDs. Individual LEDs though are not spectrally tunable.

This means while the light may be perceived as warm or cool the spectrum of the light will not match the sun’s light. Whether this matters for health is less well understood. In terms of intensity, these systems are comparable to the sun only near windows. We plan on evaluating the tunable systems.

How do we solve issues in healthcare when resident/ patient needs sleep but staff need light?

This is definitely a question we want to explore (and hopefully will in the near future). One option is red light. Because red is outside the melanopic action spectrum it doesn’t suppress melatonin.

Staff could use red lights without disrupting residents. Whether either the staff or the residents would accept this is another question. Another option is careful design of light sources with respect to the bed/pillow. Third, paying attention to the light adaptation of the staff may help, so that if their eyes are dark-adapted it may be that at least some tasks they could do without bright light. This is a bigger problem in multi-bed rooms, of course. I suspect that having a better privacy/light curtain will be part of the solution. - Jeff Kline

What architectural features or site work could encourage more outdoor activity/ Gardens? Etc. An architectural solution would be to create well-daylit connecting spaces that residents are likely to move through from one place to another, such as the corridor or breezeway between private rooms and dining rooms. A microclimate approach would be to make attractive and functional outdoor spaces that extend the times of the year when it is comfortable to be outside – winter spaces that are sheltered from rain and wind but admit the sun and summer spaces that admit the wind but are shady. Even window sill gardens (inside or outside) might move residents closer to the windows and encourage shades to be left open so the resident can enjoy looking at their efforts. - Jeff Kline

What’s a good/better/best range of controls? Architectural implications?

Good question, and I suspect the answer lies with the individual.

Just as in the spaces we all visit daily, the likelihood that we will be comfortable, controls shades, operable windows, electric lights, etc. depend on: sense of ownership

(private office vs. open office), personal tastes, knowledge of how to operate (and operate properly to achieve heat/cool/light/dark/etc).

What is the actual light spectrum once it has bounced off the surfaces and the impact on the CR?

Each surface absorbs and reflects certain wavelengths. This means that by the time reflected light reaches the eye it’s spectrum has been modified. For instance, a red wall would absorb everything but the reds and therefore would provide light melanopic light. - Jeff

Establishing a metric would allow us to study the relationship between view quality and stress recovery, cognitive performance, property value, etc. I suspect that demographic factors might significantly influence perceived view quality, hindering the development of a standardized metric. - Paul Ward

Impact of sunglasses on circadian?

Does status drive program layout?

It often does and this has been identified as a potentially confounding factor in some daylighting studies. A number of good studies account for this in their analysis. - Paul Ward

How to measure effects?

There are a variety of methods for measuring physiological effects.

Melatonin concentration is a good indicator of general circadian function and can be measured in saliva or blood, cognitive activity can be measured directly with EEG or functionally with various tests, and there are standardized questionnaires for assessing mood.

Productivity is harder to track at an individual level. Performance on cognitive tests can serve as a proxy and certain occupations have

Sunglasses likely have a significant impact on circadian stimulus (modulating both illuminance and wavelength). I’d be curious to see if the effects are significant under the conditions when sunglasses are normally used. For example, if it is a bright day with illuminances of 50,000 lux or greater and sunglasses reduce eye illuminance to ~1,000 lux, this is still enough light to significantly influence the circadian system. - Paul Ward discrete tasks that can be assessed via completion time or accuracy.

Organizational productivity can be assessed in aggregate, as can health, to some extent. - Paul Ward

How to drive daylight requirements in codes?

(Germany) There has been some success driving daylight requirements using energy concerns. As we continue to quantify the health implications, it will likely become easier still.

I would try to demonstrate that daylight is both desired and healthy and daylighting can help meet energy requirements. - Paul Ward

View quality?

There has been some interesting work done regarding ~objective assessments of view quality (Tregenza and Tuaycharoen as

How to control for other factors (diet, job, etc.)?

There are methods to control for potentially confounding effects with enough specific data. The alternative approach is large sample populations. An intermediate approach could attempt to quantify various important factors like overall illuminance received, overall caloric expenditure, average activity level, etc. so that they could be used as weighting factors in an empirical relationship. - Paul Ward

Effect of glazing type,tinting, etc.

We will have to strike a balance between energy/thermal performance and circadian considerations. Low-E glazing may not have a major impact if its effects are limited to reducing the

IR spectrum component. Anything that filters or reduces part of the visible spectrum will likely reduce the effect on the circadian system. Paul Ward

How to specify? Triple glazing, films, strong thin glass I suspect that most glazing types will not have much of an effect on bright days as the light that reaches the interior will still be relatively intense. I would avoid anything that significantly reduces overall transmittance (unless it has adaptive characteristics). - Paul Ward

Role of transition spaces? By bldg type? Climate zone?

I think transition spaces could be excellent opportunities to provide brighter light that can facilitate entrainment. Climates with higher average illuminance may not benefit as much from such an approach. Attempts at implementation should try to minimize jarring transitions from bright to dark spaces and vice versa.

Public-private initiatives around lighting energy-efficiency? Govt or institutional/leadership?

The property development model is often based on some form of returns over time for both parties. A lighting partnership could attempt to quantify the resultant energy savings and split them between both the public and private entities.

Could utility-funded energyefficiency incentives programs serve as an existing model for this type of partnership? - Paul Ward

these barriers will require better quantification of both the energy and non-energy benefits, better data management and data access interfaces, and better methods of engaging with and responding to occupants. - Paul Ward

What would daylight code requirements look like?

Illuminance? Views? Circadian?

I think a daylighting code should include minimum illuminances (spatial daylight autonomy, essentially), minimum required space with access to exterior views, some manner of accounting for basic aspects of view quality, and at least some percentage of space that is brightly illuminated. - Paul Ward

Does Well rating system circadian light credit capture good advice, best practice?

The Well circadian lighting standard is a good start, but seems to lack nuance. There is also evidence that the most important time to seek exposure to reinforce entrainment is in the early morning hours (before work) while, conversely, the most important time to avoid exposure is late in the evening (after work). That being said, the Well standard incentivizes daylighting and increased consideration of circadian health and meeting it will result in better buildings. - Paul Ward

What are the energy impacts of implementing daylighting and circadian lighting best practices in various bldg types?

Daylighting strategies have been shown to dramatically decrease lighting energy consumption when implemented appropriately.

Practices designed to reinforce healthy circadian rhythms are also likely to reduce energy consumption, provided the light exposure is coming from daylight and not electric light. - Paul Ward

What commissioning, recommissioning and re-re-recommissioning is need for new controls including circadian?

Financial impact?

If using daylight, care must be taken to balance comfort concerns with efforts to provide bright light. This will require an iterative process and a nuanced approach to integrating automatic shading controls with user override capability. There may be certain climates where electric light is the only reliable way of providing sufficient stimulus (at least seasonally). In this case, a balance must be struck with energy concerns. Commissioning should focus on comfortable transitions between intermittent periods of bright light, providing user control, and occupancy control. - Paul Ward

What are the barriers in real practice/implementation, for many types of energy control systems, incl. Circadian? What are the potential solutions?

Barriers include first-costs, operational complexity and upkeep, and balancing comfort and energy concerns. Overcoming

I don’t think there is a one size fits all solution. In some cases, we need more control and isolation, in other cases we want more diversity and exchange, or more natural and outdoor connected environments.

There are very few studies published involving probiotic cleaners and pathogens, and these only touch on HAI rates. However, HAI rates are complicated by seasonality, and hospital cleaning studies can be complicated by compliance to cleaning regimes over time and the “novelty” of a new product that makes people more effective in their cleaning. Thus, it can be difficult to point to the cleaning product as the mechanism by which infections are reduced. - Sue Ishaq

Microbes have very plastic genomes and adapt to their location conditions, so creating a closed loop might not work well unless there was significant diversity in hosts and environments (like a biome rather than a greenwall). You can see the effects in microbes in space stations and arctic research stations, where isolation leads to a reduction in microbial diversity in occupants and the built environment over time, and pathogenicity goes up. - Sue Ishaq

How effective is UV-light sterilization?

It depends on the microorganism and on the dosage. A number of bacterial and fungal species are resistant to UV, or can improve their resistance over time following short exposures. If the bacteria have formed endospores, or the fungi formed spores, they are extremely resistant to UV.- Sue Ishaq

Microbial sensors? How? Stored vs. real time?

How do we quantify benefits with different metrics and outcomes?

This is a great question and one that we do not yet have a solid answer for. There are a range of metrics in various research fields that attempt to quantify the effects of environmental variables on health, comfort, and energy consumption. When and where possible, we try and consider a range of these to make a holistic determination of performance, but there is very little research or practical application that has synthesized more than one these metrics into a single metric or outcome that can more broadly define performance. This is an immediate area of interest for our research teams as we try and push ideas about health in the built environment out into the hand of our industrial and design partners. How can we collect data that is non-temporally synchronized light and microbes?

This is a great question. As of right now, we are considering collecting microbial samples once or twice daily (by means of an adhesive sticker or swab that can be removed and stored) and sensor-based data (light, temp, humidity, location) ever couple second. We need to pilot these devices in order to understand what time-granularity

As mentioned above, we are planning to use an adhesive-backed swab that can collect particulate in the air and from contact. These swabs can then be removed twice daily (or potentially more frequently) and stored in a provided container for analysis at a later time. While we cannot track when and where precisely the device came into contact with the microbe, we can map possible exposure pathways and use data mining to find points of intersection between devices or locations that may be transmitting the microbes.

We have also discussed the idea of developing a sensor that turns color in reaction to an exposure – like PH paper or a home pregnancy test. This type of sensor may be designed to “look” for different types of microbes and indicate exposure with a visible chemical transformation. This could result in a barcode of exposure patterns that someone can upload to an app using a photo of the sensor surface.

This type of sensor would require significant development efforts. Siobhan Rockcastle

Equity… Who is exposed where?

Not everyone is allowed equal access to natural light, fresh air, and comfortable thermal conditions.

These wearable devices could help map these inequalities and shine light on performance issues between building occupants. Siobhan Rockcastle

How to measure non-energy benefits?

This device would be a way to collect data on the variables that may be driving non-energy benefits, such as healthy light exposure. Light exposure has been linked to better sleep quality, lower absenteeism, and higher test scores. By collecting spatially and temporally-resolved environmental data for individual building occupants, we can begin to quantify the variables that may be linked to health problems. To understand the relationship between behavior, exposure, and health outcome – we would need access to medical records or health questionnaires for building occupants. This could be feasible in a medical or assisted living facility, but would be subject to health data privacy considerations. - Siobhan Rockcastle

Do we need/can we get sensors that detect spectrum of light, not just level?

In short, yes. We would ideally want to collect light spectrum and intensity – but we could learn a lot with intensity alone. - Siobhan Rockcastle

Could the desire for activity and exercise have to do with general well being? (Of circadian stimulus from windows) Potentially yes. To the best of our knowledge, there aren’t any studies that have been able to compare the effect of light exposure, to that of exercise, nutrition, stress, or any other variable that may interact.

This is due in large part to the challenges associated with field studies, where individual variables are hard to control. - Siobhan Rockcastle

Break down elements - what specific BMS features impact various savings types?

I not sure I understand the question completely but I take a stab at it. By BMS (building management system) I suspect you are referring to the fixture controls. There are 2 very important elements in the control of lighting (and there are variants that I won’t get into). The first is occupancy sensing, which turns off the fixture/s when occupants are not sensed. The second is daylight harvesting, or sometimes called photo-controlled, which senses whether there is daylight present and dims the fixture up or down to maintain a minimum

level of light on the work surface.

There is a third feature of the LLLCs that I mentioned in the presentation, and that is high-end trim. With fixtures that cannot be trimmed, there is only full-on, and often this supplies more light than is needed. LLLC fixtures have this high-end trim, allowing the fixture’s maximum output to be adjusted downwards so that this excess light is not used, thus saving energy. - Jeff Kline

How could we establish reliable enough evidence of energy savings to engage utility incentives?

The nice thing about LLLC is that the NW region has already defined a minimum saving percentage for LLLC. This is done through the Regional Technical Forum (RTF) which is part of the Northwest Power and Conservation Council. One of the slides in the presentation had a copy of the latest energy savings percentages from the RTF’s protocol. Most if not all the utilities in the region use those savings numbers for the Networked Lighting and LLLC incentives that they offer today.

Most of the utilities in the NW have some type of incentive for LLLC today and you will not have to establish the energy savings.

If the local utility does not have something in place then they typically do what they call a Custom Incentive, which means that you

do need to prove the energy saving to them to get an incentive. The nice thing about many of the LLLC systems is that they have energy monitoring as part of the package and you would be able to give monthly reports on the energy savings and usage to the utility to validate the energy savings. - Chris Wolgamott, NEEA

LLL Controls may be at odds with higher light levels that are physiologically healthier. (?)

Not necessarily. LLLC fixtures are another way to get occupancy and daylight controls without having to install a more complex wired control system. The amount of light supplied is a separate question. Regardless of the lumens supplied, the control system (LLLC or conventional wired occupancy + daylight controls) will make sure that the lights are on only when people are present and that if daylight is also present the lights will dim down while always maintaining the target illumination.

If it is thought that the illumination in a space is not sufficient the target illumination level can be increased. In the case of LLLC fixtures with LED lamps, it may be that there is excess output that has been trimmed down but that could be brought back by adjusting the high-end trim setting. In other cases it will require adding more or more powerful fixtures. - Jeff Kline

Is this for research? Or? This presentation was, at least on my part, an attempt to reframe aspects of building operations to reflect my experiences over the last few years. I think there are many opportunities for research and experimentation that explore how designs can be developed to facilitate continued operations, particularly concerning adaptation.

From a technical perspective, I feel that we have made a number of technological advancements that we haven’t yet figured out how to apply most effectively.

We are trying to better define ‘best-practice’ approaches that incorporate these advancements. Paul Ward

It would be interesting to pair the type of information produced

by Comfy to that gained via a mindfulness app. What if Comfy asked users why they felt the way the did? Could it facilitate occupant engagement with building operation? - Paul Ward

This seems to be happening more at a community college or vocational school level. There are interesting opportunities for interdisciplinary studies at universities which could provide some combination of engineering, design, data analysis, and building operations.

On a larger scale, this appears poised to become one of the major questions of the next decade. Developing a method to anonymize/aggregate the data in a useful way will be crucial. I think we need more operations personnel in the design process.

We also need to be able to better describe the long-term impacts of design (and ‘value engineering’) decisions. This would be facilitated by long-term analysis of building performance that takes into account occupant health and performance, maintenance costs and time, and equipment longevity.

It would be interesting to explore methods of space personalization that did not require physical objects (lighting, temperature, sound, etc.). We could also look for ways that building design and operation influence organizational culture and interpersonal interactions. - Paul

How are we managing building systems data? Accessible?

Building operational data is not currently accessible in most situations. Interfaces are often clunky, data is not generally saved, and when saved it is often stored in a variety of formats. - Paul Ward

How do you successfully budget to move forward with tech?

We’re trying to make the case that investing in a proactive approach to building management will significantly reduce future expenses. This might be more successful if we can reframe the issue and focus on expenses that will arise if the issue is not addressed. We will have to buy new equipment when this fails. We will have to spend more to do the same work in 5 years. We will eventually pay taxes on our carbon emissions.

To facilitate this process, we’re piloting a model which starts with small investments and reinvests the savings into bigger projects, creating a growing, rolling fund. Paul Ward

How do we manage data on campus?

It’s currently fragmented; stored in various systems across campus without a cohesive set of protocols governing format, storage time, and accessibility. - Paul Ward

How do you maintain regular energy efficiency maintenance in buildings?

One simple approach is to commit a percentage of the construction costs to annual maintenance budgets. Alternatively, you could employ a rolling method where an initial retrofit produces performance savings that are reinvested in future maintenance.

Autonomy vs. automated - what is the balance?

Personally, I’d prefer a system where automation is used to facilitate human engagement with the building rather than replace it. New laboratory assets are being developed to facilitate testing within the State of Oregon. These include the A.A. “Red” Emmerson Advanced Wood Products Laboratory at Oregon

State University, which features an advanced wood products manufacturing bay, complete with CLT press, a 5-axis CNC, and a high-accuracy robot mounted on a linear track and a structural testing bay with a 25’ tall x 4’ thick reaction wall.

Dr. Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg is an Associate Professor at the University of Oregon. He directs the ESBL in Eugene and Portland, and co-directs the BioBE Center.

He has a PhD in the Built Environment from the University of Washington, and was the founding Director of the Integrated Design Lab in Boise (UI-IDL), where he completed over $7M in funded research and outreach in daylighting and energy efficiency.

Dr. Jessica Green is an engineer and ecologist who specializes in biodiversity theory and microbial systems. She uses approaches at the interface of microbiology, ecology, and data science to understand and model complex ecosystems. Jessica received a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from University of California Berkeley, an M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from UC Berkeley, and a B.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Magna Cum Laude from UCLA.

G.Z. “Charlie” Brown is an internationally recognized educator, author, and researcher on sustainability and energy use in buildings.

Brown has received numerous awards and recognition for his leadership, research, and influence on sustainable building practices.

Since he joined the University of Oregon faculty, Brown has been principal investigator on more than $16 million of externally funded research. Brown holds graduate degrees in industrial design, business and architecture.

Dr. Siobhan “Shevy” Rockcastle earned her professional B/Arch from Cornell University in 2008 and her SMArchS degree in Building Technology from MIT in 2011. She brings expertise in architectural design, human perception, environmental dynamics, and building performance with a focus on occupant well-being, particularly regarding lighting.

Dr. Rockcastle’s current research uses virtual reality to map human responses to daylight and composition in immersive architectural environments.

His research interests explore the effects of human migration from outdoor to indoor dwelling on evolutionary mechanisms influencing health and how architectural design can restore these relationships.

Dr. Sue Ishaq is a Research Assistant Professor of Microbial Ecology at BioBE. Ishaq has a Ph.D. in Animal, Nutrition and Food Science from the University of Vermont, and completed two postdoctoral positions at Montana State University, in host-associated microbiomes and agricultural soil microbiology. Her current research centers around the interaction of the built environment, the indoor microbiome, and the health and ecology of the macro-organism occupants.

Educated and trained as an architect, Jeff has conducted research, consulted with design professionals and owners, innovated new building systems, and educated at ESBL for 24 years. Jeff has provided energy design assistance on more than 100 buildings and worked with institutional owners with combined portfolios of over 1500 buildings. He has published design tools, coauthored a book and many peer-reviewed papers, and co-invented a heat exchanger and a weatherresponsive shade control system, both patented.

Jason has been with the lab since January 2005.

He conducts research and recommends design improvements for building and component development. His design assistance experience includes daylighting, energy programming, microclimate, and natural ventilation simulations and analysis. Jason’s mechanical engineering background has been beneficial to providing technical assistance on product design and implementation.

Alen Mahic

Dale has been with the lab since 1996 and has considerable expertise in field and lab testing and monitoring. A skilled building and systems analyst, Dale has completed more than 10,000 DOE-2 building energy simulations across 7 of the 8 U.S. climate zones. Dale’s work has influenced United States guidelines for future buildings.

Before joining ESBL, Dale helped start a solar collector manufacturing business and worked in the research, development, and manufacturing of solar collectors for several years.

Alen is a Research Assistant at the ESBL. He holds a M/Arch degree from the University of Idaho where he worked at the Integrated Design Lab from 2011 to 2015. Mahic focuses on daylighting simulation, automating workflows centered on the Radiance suite of daylighting tools to assist architects and engineers on a variety of new construction and renovation projects.

Gwynne Mhuireach

Dr. Gwynne Mhuireach holds a M/Arch degree from the UO and a BS in Biology from the UW. Her eclectic background includes a rural farming upbringing, formal education in the “hard” sciences, and an enduring passion for blending ecological and creative pursuits. This range of interests and skills provides a solid foundation for her work at the ESBL. She enjoys questioning the assumptions that contribute to our current energy problems.

Paul Ward is a Graduate Research Fellow in the ESBL. He holds a BSc. in Aerospace Engineering from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, and a MS in Nuclear Engineering from Texas A&M. He previously researched energy resource efficiency through computational fluid dynamics. Paul’s current research focuses on reducing energy consumption through building recommissioning.

Willem is a BioBE research assistant. His background in ecology and molecular genetics propels his current research, investigating the role of building material in shaping the indoor microbiome.

Alida graduated with a BFA in Jewelry and Metalsmithing from the University of Oregon in 2011 and was awarded a Windgate Fellowship that same year. Alida works at the University of Oregon as a Studio Technician in Jewelry and Metals as well as an Office Specialist with the Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory.

Olivia Bain

Lily is a M/Arch student and received her BS degrees in Architecture and Architectural Preservation from Temple University. After working in the industry for several years, she returned to school to gain a deeper understanding of sustainable systems and designing for ecological and human health.

Olivia is a M/Arch student with an interest in energy efficient design and emerging technologies. Her architecture studies include research on the sensory impacts of building design on occupant health and wellbeing. She is also a certified passive house consultant (CPHC).

Gloria Morazan

Catherine (Cat) Earley has a BArch from Virginia Tech, and is now pursuing a postprofessional MS in Architecture. At the ESBL, she primarily researched the influence of lighting on circadian rhythms, of the general population as well as more vulnerable aging populations. Currently, she is working with Professor Brook Muller on interdisciplinary design solutions for vector-borne disease management.

Gloria Morazan is a Fulbright scholar from Honduras. She studied architecture in her home country and worked at a construction company for 5 years. Gloria decided to pursue a MArch focused in sustainability at the University of Oregon in Portland. Her research interests focus on “healthy buildings”, analyzing how the built environment can promote health in all scales, social equity and human dignity.

Delaney Hetrick is a B/Arch student minoring in Business Administration and Interior Architecture. She is currently a lab assistant at ESBL. Delaney’s architecture studies focus on sustainability and building tectonics.

Nick is a M/Arch student with a passion for sustainable technology. He received a BA in Urban Studies and Planning from the University of California, San Diego, and has also worked as a Civil Engineer in the US Air Force and as an Intern at Spurlock Landscape Architects. He is currently working on the design of a small chamber for building material air quality testing.

Denise is a dual M/Arch and MS/Arch student, and Graduate Research Fellow at ESBL. She received her B/Arch degree from Ball State University, and has been researching annual daylight metrics, energy simulation, and thermal comfort in mass-timber buildings.

Patrick Horve

Kathy is a senior at U of O, majoring in Biology and minoring in Biochemistry.

She is interested in the development and interaction between microorganisms and people with various diseases, such as asthma and other respiratory syndromes, in schools and hospitals. In her free time, she loves to cook and explore new cultures.

Patrick Horve is a University of Oregon undergraduate Biology student with an emphasis on human biology. He is working towards his Bachelors of Science degree with an expected completion date of Winter 2019.

Patrick has experience in cell and bacteria culturing as well as clinical and surgical interning experience in the field of orthopaedic medicine. Patrick is currently working on our study of the culturing of C. difficile and the spread of hospital-acquired infections.

Mira is working towards her degrees in Liberal Arts and Humanities, with minors in Computer Information Technology and Multimedia Art. She loves aesthetic and functional design, and is a passionate artist and nature enthusiast.

She spends her spare time reading, hiking and traveling.

Evon received her Bachelor of Fine Art in Architecture from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and worked for Truexcullins Architecture + Interior Design in Burlington, VT. Her research has been focused on human cognition and perception in the built environment, evidence-based design, and biofeedback sensors including facial expression analysis and galvanic skin responses.

Jane Gordon

Michael H. Schill is the 18th president of the University of Oregon. He was appointed by the UO Board of Trustees and began his tenure on July 1, 2015. As president, Schill has launched a series of initiatives to advance the university’s three priorities: enhancing academic and research excellence, supporting student access and success, and improving the campus experience and diversity. In October 2016, Schill announced the launch of the historic Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact, a groundbreaking billion dollar initiative to transform science innovation at the UO.

Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering Portland State University Since 2005, Dr. Robert Martindale has been a tenured faculty member at OHSU in Portland, Oregon, where he is currently a Professor of Surgery and the Chief of the Division of GI and General Surgery. He also serves as the Medical Director for Hospital Nutrition Services.

His research interests include perioperative methods for optimizing surgical outcomes, preventing perioperative infection, abdominal wall reconstruction, surgical metabolism, management of enterocutaneous and enteroatomospheric fistulae, and nutritional modulation of the immunity.

John Townes

Interim Head of the Division of Infectious Diseases, Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Control Oregon Health Sciences University I am a graduate of The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and completed residency in Internal Medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. I was an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer in the Foodborne and Diarrheal Diseases Branch at CDC, and worked for two years at the Oregon state health department. I completed fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt University Hospital and have been on the faculty at OHSU since 2000.

I am an infectious diseases physician at OHSU. My area of expertise is infections in immunocompromised hosts, specifically the transplant population. I am interested in prevention of infection in the healthcare setting for this at-risk patient population.

I am a research analyst at the Green Building Research Lab at Portland State University under the supervision of Dr. Elliott Gall. My work focuses on measuring VOCs, including VOCs emitted by materials, plants, in outdoor and indoor air mainly using mass spectrometry techniques such as gas chromatography - mass spectrometry or proton transfer reaction - time of flight - mass spectrometry.

Evan Schmidt

Evan is the Outreach Coordinator at TallWood Design Institute, a collaboration between University of Oregon’s College of Design and Oregon State Universities Colleges of Engineering and Forestry. Evan completed his M.S. in Wood Science at Oregon State University, where his research focus was on moisture performance of cross laminated timber building components, through laboratory simulations and field monitoring of a mass timber structure. Evan received a B.A. in Architecture from the University of San Francisco where his thesis focused on the design of a modular timber medical triage center for disaster relief.

Alejandra Paniagua is a lighting designer at Glumac with a background in interior design. With over 9 years of experience, Alejandra combines her technological expertise with a passion for creating beautiful and functional spaces. This knowledge and unique design approach helps her create environments that impact and enhance the users experience and overall wellbeing. She is an active member in the lighting community and is a member of the local IES chapter. In her free time, she likes to spend time outdoors enjoying the sun and the fresh air of the Pacific Northwest.

Tina joined the University of Oregon in September, 2018 as the senior director, industry partnerships. She leads and executes business development and partnership strategies applied to a broad set of companies and professional organizations.

She brings experience from Ford Motor Company and Georgia Tech where she spent the last 15 years developing strategic partnerships for the Institute. She is also graduate from the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering and currently serves on the Technology Association of Oregon’s board of directors.

Naomi Johnson Miller

Bob Davis is a Senior Staff Lighting Engineer at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, where his responsibilities include serving as Technical Director of the Solid-State Lighting program and leading several human factors research efforts.

He has been a faculty member at RPI’s Lighting Research Center and in Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His experience includes working in engineering and marketing at a lamp manufacturer and leading the product development and engineering teams at a luminaire manufacturer.

He has degrees in Architectural Engineering and a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology, is a Fellow of the Illuminating Engineering Society and serves as CoDirector of the Rocky Mountain Lighting Academy at CU Boulder.

Naomi Miller straddles the line between design and engineering at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Portland OR. By bridging the gap between technology and application, she promotes the wise use of LEDs, working with industry to overcome hurdles and celebrate the opportunities. She is currently serves on the Illuminating Engineering Society’s Board of Directors, and is both a Fellow of the IES and the IALD.

Ms. Heschong was a licensed architect for 30 years and a founding Principal of the Heschong Mahone Group (HMG), an energy consulting firm. She is an internationally recognized expert on daylighting, lighting energy use, thermal and visual comfort, and human behavior as factors in building design.

Metrics Committee. Ms. Heschong was awarded her Master of Architecture from MIT with the AIA Medal, where her thesis was published as Thermal Delight in Architecture (MIT Press). In 2011 she received the Haecker Award for lifetime achievement from the Architectural Research Centers Consortium.

Ms. Heschong is a Fellow of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), has served on the Board of Directors of IES, and as Chair of the IES Daylight

Galen Burrell

Galen Burrell is a senior lighting specialist at View Dynamic Glass with 16 years of experience in lighting and daylighting design and sustainability consulting.

Throughout his career, his primary aim has been to develop design solutions that balance human comfort and energy performance, while providing for visual delight. Galen’s role at View is to serve as a lighting subject matter expert, develop robust daylight simulation workflows, and researching the health

and wellness outcomes of daylighting. Prior to joining View, Galen was a lighting designer at Arup, where he worked on a broad range of project typologies and scales, including airports, corporate headquarters, museums, and universities.

Galen also teaches daylighting part time at the University of Colorado at Boulder and was awarded Lighting Magazine’s “40 Under 40” Award for International Lighting Designers in 2018

Karina Bonin

Mechanical Engineer, WELL AP PAE

Karina is a mechanical engineer with PAE, a national leader in sustainable design. She is the firm’s first WELL accredited professional and often provides expertise as the lead sustainability engineer on projects with lofty sustainability goals. Her resume features a broad range of project types from government buildings to K-12 schools to commercial offices, and includes several highly sustainable projects. Karina has also

given Net Zero Energy presentations and facilitated workshops that teach engineering students how to design Net Zero buildings. Passionate about creating healthy work environments, Karina currently leads a Healthy Buildings team within PAE to ensure that firm’s offices are aligned with healthy building rating systems, such as the WELL building standard.

Craig Lardiere

Mechanical Engineer PAE

Craig Lardiere is a mechanical design engineer at PAE. He has a strong interest in occupant health and well-being specifically focused on thermal comfort and indoor air quality. A PSU alumni, Craig worked in the Green Building Research Laboratory helping develop air quality sensors and modeling the influx of pollution into buildings. In addition to his BS in engineering, he is an accredited energy

manager and has worked with multiple large universities on collecting and analyzing energy use data. He currently volunteers with the Portland Green Schools Committee and is involved with local ASHRAE and APEM chapters.

Craig’s latest interests include developing systems to better correlate occupant survey feedback with continual IEQ measurements.

Principal Architect, FAIA SRG Partnership Kent Duffy, FAIA is an award-winning design principal highly regarded for his innovations in sustainable design. He has collaborated with the Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory since 1999. Projects resulting from that collaboration include the Lillis Business Complex at the University of Oregon, the Annunciation Building at Mount Angel Abbey, the Chemeketa Community College Allied Health Building,

the Lane Community College Downtown Campus, Portland Community College Southeast Campus Library, and the Glenwood Riverside CLT Parking Structure. Kent presented on the influences of microbial research on architectural practice at the 2017 Microbiology of the Built Environment (MoBE) symposium at the National Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine last October.

Lisa Petterson Principal Architect SRG Partnership

For nearly 30 years Lisa has been dedicated to green building projects, emphasizing improved performance by leveraging daylight to offset electrical lighting. Her approach to design relies heavily on performance studies, post-occupancy data, and insight gained throughout her long, focused career. Lisa’s goal is to shape light-filled environments that enable the best possible user experience and will endure for generations.

Lisa is well-versed in research supporting the use of daylight to improve worker productivity and to enhance learning, and speaks nationally on the topic. Her current work on net-zero energy buildings has led her to develop energy modeling tools that predict the amount of energy saved from lighting early in the design process, thus providing design and development teams with critical information regarding proposed space design and equipment and fixture selection.

Melanie De Cola Senior Designer Hickok Cole

As a senior designer focusing on research and communication for an architecture firm, I often find myself in the minority in terms of title and responsibilities. Not many design firms pursue grants and research efforts on top of client project work. But I enjoy the challenge because it exposes me to the place where many different disciplines overlap. My

background is in graphic design and sustainability, my master’s thesis was a communications effort around the principles of biomimicry and I continue to champion a way of thinking and designing that works with the natural world, not against it. I’m hoping participating in this consortium will help me find lots of like-minded people to collaborate with in future!

Tom has twenty-four years of experience in a variety of project types. After working in New York City for two years on private and multi-family housing projects, he moved to Sydney Australia for a year to continue working on similar project types. Tom moved to Portland, OR in 1998 and worked for Potestio Architects for over a year on several private residence. He then shifted focus to work on multi-family housing, schools, universities,

commercial offices, and religious work including an award-winning chapel in Denver, CO. His commitment to environmental stewardship helped lead a team though the design and construction of University of Portland’s School of Engineering building, which achieved LEED Platinum certification. Tom believes that the built and natural environment are inseparable and dependent upon each other to allow healthy communities to thrive.

Evan Stravers

Evan is a Designer at Scott | Edwards Architecture here in Portland, and originally hails from DeKalb, IL. He formerly worked locally for Path Architecture and Munzing Structural Engineering on design and construction of Carbon 12 - the tallest timber tower currently standing in the USA and the first to expose CLT in a residential application. He believes in the ability of architecture, research, responsive design, and

public policy to help people and our environment. To him, compassionate holistic problem solving, research, community engagement, and multidisciplinary collaboration are critical components of the design process. He strives daily to be a more thoughtful, hardworking, and well-rounded designer. Mass Timber and Parametric/Computational Design are the prime focus of his current research.

Yogi Gopalan

Martha has been leading workplace transformation for Microsoft since 1997. Before that she was a commercial interior designer at architecture firms in Seattle. Martha manages design for Microsoft Real Estate, as well as video and photography production, and the Accessible Workplace program. She is a writer and photographer. Martha grew up in Portland, Oregon and attended University of Oregon. In 2011, Martha was bestowed with the Business Leaders in Design award from IIDA.

Yogi Gopalan is a Senior Design and Development Engineer at Lutron Electronics Co., Inc. He works in the Building Science Group conducting applied research on energy and human benefits of lighting and daylighting controls. He graduated with a Masters in Energy Science from Carnegie Mellon University in 2014 and joined Lutron immediately after as an embedded developer for their commercial products.

For over 20 years Chris Wolgamott has worked in the utility business in the Pacific Northwest, as a program manager, efficiency engineer and product manager. As the Senior Product Manager for Commercial and Residential Lighting with NEEA, Chris leads all emerging tech research on lighting products to support transformation of the commercial and residential lighting markets. He works extensively with lighting manufacturers on were the future of lighting and controls are headed.

As NEEA’s Strategic Market Manager for the Commercial Market, Debbie leads the development of the overall strategy and infrastructure to support transformation of the region’s commercial market to the most efficient technologies and practices. Debbie started her career in energy efficient lighting at Lawrence Berkeley National Labs and ten took a decadelong detour into product design before realizing her true passion is energy efficiency. Recent interests include giant bubble blowing, street art, and indoor horticulture for food production.

Eunice Noell-Waggoner

Lighting Design Research Center of Design for an Aging Population B.S. Interior Architecture, UO The first half of Eunice’s professional career involved interior and lighting design for public buildings and commercial spaces. The second half of her career has been focused on addressing the needs of older adults through the Center of Design for an Aging Society, a not-for-profit organization she founded.

Currently, she stimulates the formation of collaborative research teams to study the impact of LED light and daylight to address circadian disruption in memory care and nursing home residents.

The first collaborative research project included Brown University and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory at the ACC Care Center. The second project at Rogue Valley Manor Memory Care also includes the UO Institute for Health in the Built Environment.
