7 Top Kitchen Design Trends for 2018

Kitchens are the heart of today’s homes and one or two trendy updates will bring your kitchen into the 21st century. Below are a few suggestions that might work in your kitchen. Grey is the New White The kitchen industry’s leading manufacturers say that while white cabinets continue to be tops, gray is the shade they’re betting on to break white’s top spot. Pairing soft gray cabinets with richly stained wood showcasing yet another kitchen trend — combining cabinet colors is a trendy look that’s holding strong for 2018. Classic Black and White The look may change as styles evolve, but the appeal of a black-and-white kitchen never dies. It’s all about high contrast —Absolute Black granite countertops, works well for both country and modern. When “Stuff Happens” to You WATER, STORM & FIRE DAMAGE - What you need to know

by Claudio Alvarez Restoration It’s never when you expect it, or when you’re prepared, but when fire, water, or storm damage happens to your home it helps to know what to do and where to find the help you need.

WATER DAMAGE

Water damage can be deceptive. It penetrates into structural cavities, creating pockets of saturation. The detection of water in these areas can often only be discovered with sophisticated tools. Undetected moisture will continue to cause damage including greater problems such as shrinkage, splitting and deterioration. Knowing the Potential Threats Water damage can result from many sources: • Frozen pipes • Broken or dripping plumbing inside your home • Leaky roofs or windows • Natural rising water lines, like rivers or lakes during heavy rain Though less common, water damage from flooding can be especially serious. Water is likely to be contaminated with anything that’s been swept up in floodwaters, like soil bacteria, decaying insects, animal droppings, road runoff, or fertilizers and pesticides from fields or gardens. Looking for the Signs of Water Damage Not all water damage is easy to identify, and it can happen slowly over days or weeks before being noticed. Look for discolored walls or floors and any soft spots in the home. This could be a sign of water damage.

STORM DAMAGE

When a storm rolls through, it can leave destruction including felled trees, wind, and hail and snow damage. Wind Damage and Felled Trees The prevalence of old oaks in Medford and Central Point and conifers at slightly higher elevations in Jacksonville or Ashland mean that a good storm leaves behind some felled branches. Hail Damage to Roofs Hail, while relatively rare in our area, can leave dark spots on asphalt shingles where the mineral granules have been dislodged from the impact of the hail.

Water Leaks after Storms Keep an eye out for shingles that look misplaced or damaged to catch water damage before it starts, and be on the lookout for leaks and other signs that water is seeping into your house. Siding Damage Siding may look pockmarked and dented, cracked or have holes from hail damage, and paint or stucco may look disturbed or chipped. Wind may dislodge or displace siding. Subtle Damage Takes Time to Show Even if your roof doesn’t have a tree fall through it or the gale doesn’t blow the siding off your house, it’s still wise to be attentive to the home’s exterior after a bad storm. It can take months for seemingly minor storm damage to make itself known in the form of slow leaks, standing water or mold, and by that point it becomes a major concern that’s more costly to fix.

FIRE DAMAGE

While fire is always the immediate danger what it leaves behind will continue to affect the house. Ash and smoke will cause extensive corrosion, etching and discoloration, not to mention powerful odors. Before a Fire Happens Have an insurance policy that covers fire and smoke damage. Make sure that your home is insured properly. Don’t wait to learn that you didn’t have the coverage you needed when it’s too late. What to Do After A Fire Call a professional cleanup company to your home as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage. Practice caution when entering: fire damage leaves harmful particles in the air. Use a dust mask and gloves if you need to re-enter your home or property before cleanup. Ventilate the home: if your home experiences fire damage of any severity, circulate fresh air in the home to help get the air and particles out. Use professional laundering services: Draperies, clothing and other machine-washable items should be professionally cleaned in order to neutralize the acid in the soot. If they aren’t sufficiently damaged and in need of replacement, take these articles to your local dry cleaner. Slow-Motion Effects of Untreated Smoke and Fire Damage The following is a timeline from the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) concerning the effects of fire and smoke on a home.
