Anstey’s Monthly Community Magazine • Late-October 2010 Anstey Christmas Day Lunch The 5th Annual Anstey White Christmas Day lunch will be held on December 25th at St Marys Church rooms. This popular and much appreciated event is well attended by around 80 local residents that would normally be on their own at this special time of year. The day consists of welcome singing of carols with drinks and nibbles followed by a full 5 Course Christmas dinner with all the drinks & trimmings. Father Christmas inevitably turns up with a present for everyone. There will be entertainment in the form of musicians playing and everyone joining in singing, followed by Bingo with prizes and some old fashioned games. A food goody bag is given with love to every guest as they leave. Following last years event Christmas day lunch organiser Dave Ford of Anstey based Africa Aid spent 12 days in hospital having had a heart attack. This however, has not deterred him from continuing with this much needed community caring event again this year. The day would not be able to continue or be a success without the kind financial generosity of local Anstey residents and busineses. Please could you help and support this year? If you would like more information, make a donation, be a guest or help on the day then please contact Dave on 0116 236 8811. Financial donations/cheques made payable to Dave Ford can be sent to Dave Ford, 69 Bradgate Road, Anstey Leicester LE7 7AB.

Crowds flock to another excellent Anstey Gala Organised by the Anstey Gala Day committee, the Gala took place on the 18th of September 2010. This year’s theme was ‘Celebrating Peace at the end of WW2’ and included a display of local photos and memorabilia in the Jubilee Hall, kindly provided by Mr. Brian Kibble. Amazingly, a gentleman from a nearby village, offered to bring along a real Enigma machine and other code breaking devices, which visitors were able to touch! These are usually loaned to Bletchley Park for display. On the field we had stalls, exhibitions, children’s fairground rides, Freddie GROOVY BABY: Jane’s Groovy Movers the Magician, a Companion Dog Show run under Kennel Club rules, and arena events including: The Ratby Co-operative Mid Band, Keely Anna’s dance group, The Tommy Atkins reenactment society, Jane’s Groovy Movers, The Sea Cadets marching display, Black belt judo display and the Nuneaton Dog Obedience & Agility display teams. Committee members begin their planning meetings in January and work very hard to book a varied display, as well as providing an impressive array of refreshments. Many thanks go to everyone who took part and gave generously, to make it another successful day for our community. A particular thank you to Ulverscroft Large Print Books, Bosworth Wright Ltd., Eleet Travel, and Anstey Town Charity for their donations. Our accounts will be presented at the AGM in December and shares will be distributed amongst local groups, organisations and charities.

Local Scout Section may be forced to close The 40th Leicester (Anstey & Newtown Linford) Scout section is in desperate need of new leaders. As Steve Cole explains in the recent Scout Newsletter, “We have been fortunate to have had the help of Andy Caunt, who has been seconded from the District

team. However, Andy is leaving us at Christmas and if new leaders do not come forward there is a real possibility that the Scout section will close. This would be a disaster for the group and village alike. If anyone is interested or knows of anyone who might be interested in helping running the Scout troop please contact Steve for a chat. All training and necessary help will be provided. As well as leaders needed to help

with Scouts, Cubs and Beavers, they also need adults who are prepared to help with section meetings, trips or events on an ad hoc basis. No experience is necessary. Steve continues: “Thank you to all those parents who already help via parent rotas. The day to day running of the 40th Leicester group is overseen by a small group known as the Executive Committee. These people raise funds to cover such things as buying equipment, hall

maintenance, bills etc. and carry out repairs, control hall bookings and so on. We would like to hold more social and fund raising events than we do at present but need more people to help organise and run these. I am sure that if we work together the future of the 40th Leicester will be assured. If you are interested and want to find out more, then please contact me, Steve Cole on 0116 236 2500 or email sandj.cole@btinternet.com
