Your Monthly Community Magazine • Late-February 2011 Daniel Greaves almost broke the 60m barrier!
“Discus” Dan is a World Record man Local Lad Daniel Greaves set a new world record in the pre-IPC World Athletics Championship held in New Zealand recently. The former Anstey Martin High School pupil whose father Martin - one of our local postmen - and his mother Pam still live in the village were very proud of their son’s achievements down under. Dan, now 28, and the defending F44 discuss world champion won his first title in Lille in 2002 and his second 4 years later in Assen. He also won Gold in the 2004 Paralympic games in Athens and Silver in 2000 in Sydney. He lost out to American Jeremy Campbell, but still won a Bronze medal, in Beijing in 2008. “Discus” Dan, as he is known, represents Charnwood and Loughborough University, and unofficially broke his own world record (of 55.53 metres he set in 20050) four times last year, so he was very confident going into the event held at the Christchurch’s Queen Elizabeth II Park, New Zealand in January this year. The Aviva GB&NI ace, threw 59.98 metres with his fourth attempt and he comfortably beat the American Campbell on this occasion. The only disappointment for Dan, who admits he was really down for some time after losing in Beijing, was that he didn’t break the 60 metre barrier. But after taking some time off to regroup and sort himself out, he is back and feeling good about things and feels it is only a matter of time before he reaches the magic 60 metre mark. The refocusing after the disappointment of 2008 he says, has put him in good stead for the 2012 Paralympics in London. This is the last Clarion Sadly, this is the last issue of The Clarion. Due to diminishing advertising income, and increasing competition from other media, the magazine has unfortunately become unsustainable. We’d like to thank Anstey Parish Council for helping to start the magazine, and for all of the regular contributors who supplied news and information to keep villagers abreast of local affairs. Thanks also to the advertisers who have supported the Clarion project over the past couple of years.
