many years and, recently, Mike also served on the Board of Directors. Mike and Nancy are always willing to step up and contribute to the BCA in any way they can. Rick Schick served as BCA national chief judge for several years and, also recently, on the Board of Directors. Rick has had considerable input to the BCA Judging Manual and served as a meet chief judge several times including the recent 2022 BCA Nationals in Lisle, IL. These gentlemen have always made themselves available when asked and I am sure that will continue in the future. Thanks Myagain.wife, Belva, and I were away from our home in Indiana for 20 days in June traveling to several automotive related events. First, was the Riviera National Meet held in Branson, MO. There were approximately 50 Rivieras on display from 1963 through 1999. This was our first Riviera Nationals as well as our first visit to Branson. We thoroughly enjoyed participating with our Riviera and the time in Branson. Next, was a visit to the Eyes on Design show that celebrates motor vehicle design, both interior and exterior. This show is held at the Edsel Ford Estate in Grosse Point Shores, MI, and the proceeds go to the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology. This is an invitation only show and the 2022 theme was “Designed for Speed”. Many race and race related vehicles were on display including a 1931 Indianapolis Motor Speedway race car with a straight eight Buick engine. Third, was the 2022 BCA Nationals in Lisle, IL, where we enjoyed several days spending time with friends, meeting new people, attending seminars and helping out with vehicle judging. One particularly interesting seminar was presented by John Kraman from Mecum Auctions. I hope all who attended had as much fun as we did. Finally, we departed from Lisle, IL and caravanned with several fellow members of the Buick Driving Enthusiasts Division of the BCA to Fenton, MI, for our semi annual BDE tour. One of the museums that we visited while in Fenton was the Stahl’s Automotive Museum located in New Baltimore, MI. This museum has over 80 vehicles on display, several of which I had not seen before. In addition, they also have many fully functional, mechanical, self playing, orchestra machines from the 1920s. This museum is a must see if you are in the Detroit area. June was a busy Enthusiasmmonth.continues to grow for a possible Buick Museum building located on the grounds of the Gilmore Museum campus. It now looks like there is enough interest to proceed with a possible design concept along with rough cost We are still in the very early discussion phase of this possible long term project but the response has been very favorable so far. Until next month, please drive safely and stay healthy. the board

As the temperatures drop here in Australia for our winter season, the Buick Car Club holds its national meet every two years, pandemics allowing, which is shared between the four state clubs that make up the Buick fraternity here.

Normally held sequentially by each club in turn, this year we stepped out of order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the New South Wales Club’s inauguration.

A remarkable result when you consider that Dubbo is 500 miles from Brisbane in the north and the same from Melbourne in the south. One Pre war Buick came across the Bass Strait from Tasmania, quite a trip! Indeed, the top award on the Saturday night went to a beautifully restored 1929 model 44 roadster. A well deserved result, I might add. No matter how long these events are, they are always too short on reflection and so we are already looking forward to the next one in Why2024!don’t you consider joining us next time. TARHEEL CHAPTER Takes the field at the 2022 Goodguys 7th Griot’s Garage North Carolina Nationals RALEIGH, NC

Tarheel Chapter Director Ralph Recchie, chapter member Barry Kitchener, (also a member of the show’s host car club, the Piedmont Classic Chevy Club), and Piedmont Classic Chevy Club’ s Vice President Ray Bader, worked with Goodguys to have the Tarheel Chapter designated as a “Feature Club” during the 7th “Griot’s Garage North Carolina Nationals” April 22 24, 2022 car show at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The Tarheel Chapter had a special “Feature Club” parking area on the show field where Chapter members and invited guests parked their beautiful Buicks to showcase the vast array of General Motors' designs and feaThetures.Raleigh

Matt Herman’s 1972 Centurion convertible with installed parade boot drew a steady stream of admirers.

Goodguys show attracts upwards of 2000+ antique cars and trucks from all over the southeastern USA. This year, the weather could not have been better for a mid Spring car show, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 80s accompanied by a refreshing breeze that kept everyone comfortable. There were Buicks from the 1930s to the 1990s on display. All non chapter guests were provided information about joining the Buick Club of America and the Tarheel Chapter. Interest in being a part of the Buick Club family was high and two Buick owners joined the BCA and the Tarheel Chapter during the show weekend (Another owner also joined both clubs the following Manyweek).Buicks were parked throughout the Goodguys' show outside of the “Feature Club” area. A Tarheel Chapter information card was placed on each of those Buicks to raise awareness of a group of likeminded Buick lovers in the central North Carolina Allregion.ofthe Buicks in the “Feature Club” area were parked to display their best characteristics with several of the convertibles parked front and center for maximum attention. Central to the “Feature Club” area was Roland DiMuro’s beautiful red on red 1964 Wildcat convertible and Pat Gaglione’s outstanding black with white interior 1959 LeSabre convertible. The Chapter also had several Buick themed banners and flags on display.

The Tarheel Chapter greatly appreciates the generous support provided by Ray Bader and Barry Kitchener from the Piedmont Classic Chevy Club ofRaleigh, North Carolina. The Chapter also wishes to thank the Goodguys organization for allowing the Tarheel Chapter to be such an integral part of the 7th Griot’ s Garage North Carolina Nationals car show. The onlyhiccup of the entire event was the Tarheel Chapter being referred to as the “Oldsmobile Club of America, Raleigh Chapter” in the Goodguys event program. This caused a lot of chuckles amongst the attending BUICKowners!

Overall, the Tarheel Chapter considers this event to be its most successful to date. ♦

Paul Strohmeyer’s 1965 Skylark convertible garnered quite a bit of attention.

The Tarheel Chapter even had a “time machine” for spectators to sit in at the show! Chapter member J. Courtney Johnston brought his gorgeous black 1937 Buick model 41 Special, nicknamed “Harlow” to the “Feature Club” area. He allowed visitors to sit in the back seat of Harlow to let them experience a little of what it must have been like to ride around town in one of these “better built automobiles by Buick”. Spectator foot traffic through the “Feature Club” area was fantastic all three days, with a wide array of visitors walking through the area to admire the cars and speak with the owners.

The Buick was running well, getting around 13 miles per gallon on premium and sometimes mid grade fuel 14 or 14.5 m.p.g. if I was really careful. The scenery in Utah was gorgeous, with snow on the mountaintops east and north of Salt Lake City. I had never been to Salt Lake City before, and figured that the chances of ever getting back there again were pretty slim, so with the car running well, I took a detour and drove around the central part of that clean and bustling city. I learned that the Great Salt Lake is gradually receding in size every year, due to the decades of drought that the western U.S. has been hit with. And the L.D.S. church is a force to be reckoned with in SoutheastUtah.ofSalt Lake City, on the road to Price and Moab, the scenery got even better. Stay off of the Interstate highways and drive the older roads if you have the time you will always be rewarded. I easily found a nice motel in Green River, Utah, and the next day, the scenery got even better than the day before. In southeastern Utah, I realized I was within 30 or 40 miles of the “Four Corners” monument the only place in the United States that is common to four different states so I made a detour to see that. The monument is on the land of, and operated by, the Navajo Nation, and be advised that it costs $8 per person to get in and park your car probably one of very few ways to make a living from this desolate land. The Buick’s suspension got a pretty good workout on the highway to this place, and in the unpaved parking lot for the monument. I am convinced that a crack in the paint actually in the leaded joint where the rear quarter meets the trunk surround near the convertible well developed during that detour. It’s pretty common for small cracks to develop on this part of a car, especially a convertible, and though it saddens me, I’m not going to obsess about it.

The next stop is the center of all things “Buick” in northwestern New Mexico, and that is the home of long time BCA members Ben and Inez Garland in Farmington. There should be a sign in front of their house: “Buick” spoken here. There’s a Buick Enclave in the driveway, Buick straight eight engines on the patio behind the house, Buick fenders stashed here and there, Buick woody wagon doors loaded onto a trailer, a ‘41 and a ‘56 Buick in the big garage, and Buick memorabilia almost everywhere you look inside the well kept house. We enjoyed lunch Leavingtogether.Farmington, I got into high winds and a dust storm, but the Wildcat with its two four barrel carburetors kept going without a hiccup. When the dust storm passed, the mountain scenery and the weather were so nice that I decided to put the convertible top down yes it worked just fine. Soon, the elevation was over 7,000 feet, the vegetation had changed to Ponderosa Pines, and a small sign announced that this was the Continental Divide (see photo). The Wildcat did just fine, and its performance was not affected at all by the high altitude. I did add a quart of oil around this point in the trip total oil consumption for the 2,200 miles was just over a quart and a half not bad for a 57 year old car.

The fire from the accident had spread into the adjacent acreage, and Forest Service fire crews had apparently been pulled off of the “Camp” fire that has been burning east of Santa Fe for weeks, to put out this much smaller fire. In the far distance, to the north, I could just see the smoke on the horizon of New Mexico’s largest ever wildfire east of Santa SantaFe. Rosa, New Mexico is midway between Albuquerque and the Texas panhandle border. That’s where I spent the final night on the road, and got one of the best photographs of the entire trip: The La Mesa Motel with a wonderful neon sign on old Route 66 (see photo). New Mexico. Stopping at the Blue Swallow motel, I met the owner, Bob, who parks his 1957 Hudson sedan right in front of the office. I learned that the car has spent its entire life in Tucumcari, and was originally owned by the town’s last Hudson dealer. Also parked beside the office was Bob’s 1951 Buick Special sedan, which he said would turn over but was not getting any fuel. I explained that the pickup tube in the gas tank often gets clogged up if the gas has ethanol in it, and if it sits for a few months without being run. I would have liked to stayed and fixed the Buick, but still had about 500 miles to get home. That afternoon across the hot, dry, panhandle of northwestern Texas, the weather began to feel more like July or August, than early May. After a few hours of unrelenting heat, I thought, “just for laughs, let’s turn on the car’s air conditioner at least I can pretend that it’s working.” Imagine how astounded I was when, within a minute or two, it cooled down and worked as it is supposed to! A 57 year old convertible Buick with working A/C wow! Not long after that, I passed a bank thermometer in Chilicothe, Texas which announced that it was 104 degrees in early May. 1937 Buicks

The 1937 Buick Special and Century models were the first Buick bodies to be of all steel construction no more wood framework underneath the sheet metal. Buick called these “Unisteel” bodies. This is a huge advance, making the restoration of one of these cars possible without the need to remove the sheet metal to replace a rotted wood framework underneath. The big Roadmasters and Limiteds (series 80 and 90) would still have some wood in their bodies for one more year until they were restyled in 1938.

The other big news for 1937 Buicks was the introduction of a new straight eight engine for the Special series. 1937 was the first year for the 248 cubic inch Buick engine, which would be used in the Specials through 1950, and in the Supers (introduced for the 1940 model year) from 1940 through 1949. In 1937, this engine had a compression ratio of 5.7 to 1, a bore of 3 3/32”, and a stroke of 4 1/8”. It was rated at 100 horsepower. According to Buick literature for 1937, the new engine gave the Special a top speed of 90 miles per hour, although you certainly would not want to try to drive one that fast today with its 4.4 to 1 rear axle ratio. This was 5 m.p.h. faster than the 1936 Special’s top speed of Styling85. wise, the 1937 Buick literature makes a big deal out of the “chromium strip...holding the whole racy contour together by carrying the speed line motif of the horizontal grille all the way through the car from stem to stern.” Apparently, this was the first time Buick ran a chrome or stainless steel strip in one continuous line down the sides of the car from front to back. The 1937 Buicks also feature a 2 1/2” lower frame, compared to 1936, and a new rear stabilizer bar (in addition to the front stabilizer). The Century series for 1937 got a new, longer wheelbase of 126 inches, up from 122 in 1936. This series continued to use the 320 cubic inch straight eight, which was now in its second year and rated at 130 horsepower with a 5.75 to 1 compression ratio. 1937 Century production was 35,093 when all body styles are counted, but keeping track of the seven different body styles in this series is difficult, and had to have been a money do a chart: The Century was the fastest Buick in 1937, with an advertised top speed of 97 miles per hour. It uses a 3.9 to 1 rear axle ratio and tires and wheels, both of which are highly prized today. Like the Special series model, the Century convertible coupe has a fold down rumble seat plus an additional door or lid for the small luggage area below and behind the rumble seat. The Century two door sport coupe has a pair of “opera seats behind the front seat, for two additional passengers.

There is a provision for black engines if the engine was a World War Two era dealership replacement engine. Convertible top colors for 1937 are tan, black, and blue gray. Any other color is incorrect. The top's rear window should be glass. Two tone paint was not offered in 1937, so if fenders and running boards are a different color from the rest of the body, that is a judging deduction. ♦ 1937 Special four door sedan. On December 1, 2020, I added a 1937 Buick 80C to my collection. Buick produced 1,040 Model 80C Convertible Phaetons in 1937 for domestic sale and 115 Model 80CX Convertible Phaetons for export. It is a survivor, although it has been repainted and the interior leather and convertible top have been replaced in the past. It had 56,607 miles on the odometer when I picked it up.

BUICK BUGLE ● September 202230

By Matt Hinson, BCA #47203, Wilmington, North Carolina

The history of the car related to me by the seller is that the car was sold new at Valley Buick in Monroeville, PA. The car was traded back in to Valley Buick and the owner of the dealership had the car on display in the dealership for a number of years. The dealership reportedly refreshed the car with the paint job, interior, and convertible top before it was placed on display in the lobby. Apparently the dealer liked the 1939 color, Sequoia Cream, so he had the color changed from the original Samarra Beige. There were only 25 1937 Model 80C’s listed as owned by current Buick Club of America (BCA) members in the club’s online roster. I added this one to the roster so there are now 26. The previous two owners of this car were not BCA members. I would guess that there are most likely less than fifty 1937 Buick Model 80C’s still in existence. When the dealership repainted the car, they apparently mounted the bumpers upside down. Shortly after buying the car, I removed and reinstalled the bumper bars correctly. I drove it to the December "unofficial during the pandemic" Wilmington Cars and Coffee. Lots of people were interested in the car.

The driver's door has an oil change sticker on it. The mileage of the car at the time of that oil change was 55,869. The oil change was on 8 27 71. The car that I put 30 miles on in the first 5 days of ownership, had only been driven 738 miles in the past 49 years! Much of that time it was apparently on display in the Valley Buick showroom. After that, it spent time sitting in an air conditioned and carpeted room in the dealer's home, before he sold it to his friend, Jim Hedges. After buying the car in 2017, Mr. Hedges went through the fuel system, brake system, installed a new set of Auburn branded wide whitewall tires from Diamond Back, and otherwise got the car back to operating condition before deciding that he should sell it in 2020, due to advancing age and medical issues. When I purchased the car from Mr. Hedges, there were a few small items that I needed to address, but the car is a pleasure to drive. I have spent a little bit of time working on the Roadmaster. Previously the clock, radio, heater and defroster did not work. I cleaned up the switches for the heater and defroster motors, and now they both work. I installed new defroster hoses. Large series

When the dealership put the car on display back in the early 1970s they apparently repainted the engine. The paint that they used was not quite the correct shade for a 1937 Buick engine and the repaint Below; Top up, at a local car show.

BUICK BUGLE ● September 2022 31 1937 Buicks used a flexible rubber connection for the defroster hoses to the defroster ducts and I had to re engineer that as they have not survived too well. The original hoses were hard as a rock. I removed the clock, cleaned the clock mechanism and took it to my friend’s clock shop and had him apply clock oil to the mechanism. The clock now works correctly. One of the things I really love about this car is the original unmolested dash. This car is also equipped with one of the most unusual aftermarket accessories that I have ever seen on a car. When I bought the car, Mr. Hedges did not really know what it was. He thought it was an ashtray. I did an online search and discovered that it is actually a cigarette dispenser/lighter that dispenses a lighted cigarette for you. The wire was not connected, but I have rewired it and now the lighter does work. It was sold under at least two different brand names. This youtube video shows a similar one sold under a different brand IZEA&ab_channel=409randyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPS7wPmname.removedtheoriginalradiofromtheRoadmaster

I would like to find an original, right side, King Bee mirror with a little bit of patina to install on the right side to match the left side mirror. For safety, I purchased a reproduction right side King Bee mirror to use until I find an original one with a little bit of patina to better match the condition of the rest of the car.

and sent it to fellow 36 38 Buick Club member Pete DiPasquale who restores antique radios. He restored the radio and I then reinstalled it in the IRoadmaster.ordereda “MicroMitter” AM Transmitter And Bluetooth/FM Adapter from Retroradioshop.com. I downloaded some 1940s music from Sirius XM radio to an old Ipod and I now use the Ipod along with the AM transmitter to provide 1940s music to the radio in the Roadmaster.

With the arrival of spring like weather, I put the top down. I am fairly sure it had not been down since the dealership put the replacement top on it. It took a phone call with Marty Roth, a fellow '36 '38 Buick Club member and 1937 80C owner for some instructions, and a bit of loosening a few pivot point bolts and application of solvent to free up the top mechanism enough to allow me to put the top down. I have been enjoying the top down motoring experience. I need to get a top boot made for the car since I anticipate lots of time with the top down in the future.

I installed a new wiring harness from Harnesses Unlimited which enabled me to add turn signals for added safety. I removed the sealed beam headlight conversion and returned the headlights to their original configuration with re silvered headlight reflectors. I tried some LED headlight bulbs but was unhappy with the beam pattern so I returned them. After I finished the total harness replacement, I find the headlights just fine with re silvered headlight reflectors, original lenses and original style bulbs. I also converted the front parking light assemblies to two filament bulbs to use them as turn signals. I replaced the original parking light gaskets as they were very brittle.

32 was in poor condition. For some reason, they had painted the generator green. I have repainted the engine with the correct colored Bill Hirsch 1937 Buick engine paint. I repainted the generator black. While I was working in the area, I also installed a new water pump, hoses, correct reproduction hose clamps, heater hose shut off valves, and a new fan belt. Before I started the engine painting job, I removed the push rod cover to install a new gasket. The existing gasket was leaking oil. It appeared to likely be the original gasket. There was only a very small amount of sludge buildup on the inside of the push rod cover. I cleaned that up, painted the exterior side and installed a new gasket, resolving the oil Theleak.previous owner had installed an electric fuel pump in the engine compartment, bypassing the original mechanical fuel pump. The previous owner had also installed a glass bowl fuel filter just before the carburetor fuel inlet. I did not like the potential for a fuel leak from the glass bowl on top of the exhaust manifold. I installed a rebuilt, correct, mechanical fuel pump. I removed the gas filter near the exhaust manifold and installed a fuel filter element in the glass bowl of the mechanical fuel pump. I also installed a new vacuum line since the original had been destroyed when the previous owner bypassed the original fuel pump. This enabled me to get the windshield wipers back to work so I also installed new wiper blades. At the first startup, I discovered that the new rebuilt fuel pump was over pressuring the carburetor and forcing gas out of the carburetor bowl vent, actually dropping fuel on the exhaust manifold, which was one of the things I was trying to avoid. I then installed an adjustable fuel pressure regulator at the carburetor fuel inlet, solving that Whenproblem.Ibegan to wire the tail lights/rear turn signals I discovered that the harness was designed to use separate turn signals instead of the original brake light bulbs as turn signals. I happened to have some aftermarket turn signal assemblies that came with one of the Buick project cars that I purchased previously. I disassembled one of those lights and discovered that I could easily drill a hole in the original brake light socket assembly and mount the sockets from the aftermarket lights inside the original tail light

The Guide installation instructions call for the high beam filaments to be wired to the high beam headlight circuit and the low beam filaments to be wired to a switch. The high beam filaments serve as driving lights and the low beam filaments serve as fog lights. I have wired the fog light filaments to a single switch wired to the headlight switch circuit breaker. I don't think I really want the driving lights on every time I turn the headlights on, so I will likely wire the driving lights circuit to another toggle switch in the future. I decided it was time to tackle the gas gauge sending unit. I ran the tank down to about empty and dropped the fuel tank. This is the only 1937 or 1938 Buick that I have seen that still had the original insulation around the gas tank sending unit. I removed the sending unit, drilled out the rivets, gently cleaned up the contacts with a small wire brush and reassembled the sending unit. The sending unit checked OK with an ohm meter so I reinstalled it. I installed the new gas gauge wiring from the new wiring harness and also added an extra ground wire to one of the sending unit mounting screws as a precaution. I then reinstalled the tank. The gas gauge now works correctly. After a year of ownership, I have added over 800 fun filled miles to the odometer, more than it had been driven in the previous 50 years! ♦ The Roadmaster has graceful lines and side mounted spare tires. 35BUICK BUGLE ● September 2022 with a long way to go but you might enjoy the “they’re still out there” nature of this story and remember how lucky we all are to be part of some old Buick’s life.

I first saw it over 35 years ago in the back of the “lower storage” area at Bennett’s Buick in Wayland, NY. The two door sedan with its long hood and smooth slant back was perched on an old alignment machine. Daylight was coming in from a nearby window. The trunk lid was open and as I got closer, I could see the inside of the lid and the car’s original Balmoral Green color. (At some point, the car had been repainted with a darker possibly, Verde Green this was now flaking and wearing off in spots revealing the lighter shade underneath.) The body style and shape along with the bright factory color had me hooked.

Purchased as a potential parts car for Guy Bennett Jr.’s show stopping model 46C from behind an area service station, this Model 44 was now safe in dry storage. Fortunately, it was not needed for parts and was also recognized as being pretty solid and complete. It would wait patiently in storage while other antique cars came and went around it. As a family friend and former employee of the Bennett family I’ve been honored to share in their wonderful collection of Buicks and Weautomobilia. ’ togethermanyattendedveeventsandI have a themine.would'37onehopeddealership.fromsedanLimitedRoadmaster1992alsotheirIthatdaythisSpecialbeUponfamily ’s retirement in 2019, (after 100 years in the car business,) we made a deal and I came to transport it to my home in Virginia. It emerged from its decades long rest pretty dusty but still a beautiful Buick. The old tires held air brakes and engine were free and into the trailer “Kermit” went.

At some point the car had been hit hard on the nose. As if he knew I’d be along one day, Bennett dealership body man Ward Baker had restored a '37 nose in correct Balmoral Green and this nose hung in the rafters. Having access to a mountain of parts and resources, the result of Bennett’s many years in business and tendency to “hang on to stuff,” I also obtained a new steering wheel, four gallons of Ditzler The car as found, with the damaged nose piece and old tires.

But I’ve enjoyed it so much as it is right now, even taking it to a local car show where it kept a crowd of admirers all day. If you have never been there, I assume you are thinking it’s about Ford cars or Henry Ford. Nope, not much “Ford” presence there at all. It’s about everything automotive, and almost every type of transportation is represented. A lot of information on industrialization, changing times in America, and even a section on Social Justice. I was there 20 years ago, some of the same historic vehicles were there, like Presidential cars and even the famous bus Rosa Parks rode on, but for the most part, it was all new and much larger.

AFTERNOON, DAY 2, MORE TO COME, GREENFIELD VILLAGE: Above; A group photo of the Buicks.

DAY 2, WE STARTED WITH THE FORD RIVER ROUGE FACTORY TOUR: Factory tours are always interesting, especially when you sit at the end of an assembly line and watch a continuous flow of new vehicles, Ford F 150s, start and drive off the line minutes, if not seconds apart. Covid was alive and well at Ford, not only did we have to wear masks as we walked along the viewing platform high above the assembly line, all workers had to wear masks throughout their shifts. Ford’s rules. The most impressive thing about this tour was viewing the side by side display chassis of the Ford F 150 and the Ford F 150 Lightning electric pickup. With all electric vehicle political views and comments put aside, the Ford F 150 Lightning electric pickup chassis is an amazing looking platform and concept.

BUICK BUGLE ● September 2022 39 As always, we stay at the same hotel each night and travel to different venues each day. This year’s tour brought us to Dearborn, Michigan, the town that Ford built. The first day, starting to assemble everyone for a trip to the Henry Ford Museum. Not sure why everyone is huddled around Pete’s car. I think there was a squirrel caught in his fan belt or something? This car is built from what he figures is leftover parts of 100 cars that have gone through his shop. Even the roof has been sectioned from multiple cars.

In total, 41 members in 21 cars enjoyed the tour laid out by Pete Nathan and Nancy Rosa. Other members besides Jeanne and I that you may recognize are BCA Vice President Bob Starzyk and his wife Bonnie, past St. Louis Gateway Chapter Director and current BRCA President Russ Miller, and his wife Rhonda.

HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR TOUR DAY 1, OFF TO THE HENRY FORD MUSEUM:

40 Oh my, did we underestimate this place? This place is huge, definitely not enough time to visit in an afternoon. Unbelievable, it’s like stepping back in time. Most of the buildings are originals and have been restored and relocated from their original setting. I found it ironic that Greenfield Village has the original Wright Brothers bicycle shop from Dayton Ohio, and when we were in Dayton, we visited a replica of the Wright Brother’s bicycle shop. Along with the historic shops and buildings, there were plenty of folks riding through the streets in Model A Fords and horse drawn wagons. It was easy to identify the streets each took from the horse emissions on one and the oil droppings on the other. At the end of the day, we were at the far end of the 1910 Buick model F in the Stahl’s collection.

Driving your stylish Buick or trailering a restoredpristine Buick will be a fun drive as you won’t Conestogadrivingbea Wagon, riding a horse or driving on muddy unpaved roads before paved roads and interstates were constructed across America. Remember the free maps displayed at the gas stations? Trips were planned as the roads were marked for the next planned adventure. The wagon trains made it over the Rockies and Amtrak can take you on the Empire Builder train from Chicago to Spokane. And if you plan to drive an RV, Spokane has several RV parks. If you feel the need for some exploring then the region has many options. On the way to Spokane there is Glacier National Park, Yellowstone National Park and many spots along whatever route you choose. Beyond Spokane there are the majestic Canadian Rockies, Mt. Rainier, North Cascades and Olympic National Parks, Mt. St. Helens, Grand Coulee Dam, Leavenworth (Bavarian-themed former lumber town), fishing, hunting fossils at Stonerose Fossil site in Republic, WA, photographing the rolling Palouse Hills south of Spokane, seeing our three large lakes (Priest, Pend Oreille, and Coeur d’Alene) plus enjoying the Spokane, Pend Oreille and Columbia Rivers with a backdrop of scenic mountains.
