I recently returned from attending the 2023 Mecum auction in Kissimmee, Florida. There were approximately 4,200 cars for sale with 57 of that total being Buicks. Only three of the 57 Buicks offered for sale were from before World War II. One was a 1931 Series 60 sedan that sold for $20,900, the second was a 1937 Roadmaster Series 80 sedan that sold for $14,300, and the third was a 1940 Special Phaeton that sold for $28,600. All prices include buyer’s fees. It would seem that a Mecum auction might not be the best place to sell a pre-war Buick.

Many of the remaining 54 Buicks for sale were from the 1970s and 1980s although a 1954 Roadmaster convertible sold for $50,600 and two 1954 Skylark convertibles were sold for $82,500 and $137.500, all including buyer’s fees.

Finally, a 1970 GS Stage 1 4-speed coupe sold for $209,000, a 1987 Buick GNX sold for $192,500 and a 1987 Grand National sold for $110,000. So, it seems apparent the Buick muscle car market remains strong. Restomods and pickup trucks still lead the way, however.

Due to the high cost of postage and shipping as well as the fact that a significant percentage of awards were not picked up at the 2022 Lisle Nationals, it has been decided that the BCA will no longer ship national award

plaques for free. You will receive a reminder of this new policy when you register for the meet. The 2023 Spokane BCA National Meet is really starting to take shape with several interesting tours being planned. Belva and I hope to see you there.

Discussions are taking place to decide how to possibly utilize the services of a young man who is providing Social Media guidance to several other GM car clubs. It is hoped that he can help the BCA increase our Facebook and Instagram presence. His services are being paid for by an outside firm. If you have any suggestions on how best to move forward with this project, please contact me. Thanks.

The board has not forgotten about the need to develop a strategic plan going forward and hope to have one available for review before the end of the first quarter of 2023. If you have a chance, you might want to consider attending the 2023 Buick TriRegional Meet on June 22-24, in Morgantown, PA. The meet will be an opportunity for BCA members and Northeast GS/GN Club members to get together and swap stories about their cars. The plans are to have the first ever Buick GSX/GNX reunion as part of this BCA regional meet. Belva and I intend to be there.

Finally, the BCA museum project continues to move forward with a meeting being planned in Allentown, PA, sometime during the first quarter of 2023. One of the upcoming steps is to apply for a 501c3 not-for-profit status as part of this upcoming project. This is necessary in order to become a viable museum.

Lastly, be healthy, stay safe, and we hope to see you soon.

SPOTH PONTIAC-BUICK-GMC

Here’s another one from our collection of old Buick dealership photos. This photo dates from 1969, with several 1969 full-size Pontiacs, a Pontiac Firebird, a Ford Mustang, and one ‘69 Buick Electra parked in front of the early 20th-century building. This is located in Post, Texas, which is a small town in northwestern Texas about an hour from Lubbock. It has a population of approximately 5,000 and is the county seat of Garza County.

Post, Texas has an interesting history, being founded in 1907 by

C.W. Post, the cereal manufacturer, who wanted to create a utopia on the western Texas plains. The town is well designed and laid out, but never grew very much, due to its remote location.

The name of this dealership is Ray Spoth Pontiac-Buick-GMC, and we can surmise from the photo that Pontiacs outsold Buicks at this business. Ray Spoth lived from 1921 until 1998, but we can find no further information on this business. ♦

REMEMBERING EARL BEAUCHAMP, JR.

any work done to it to upgrade the looks of the 1940. I had to replace a tail pipe, muffler and an intake manifold gasket. It ran great and the smooth sound of an original 1940 Buick straight eight beautiful.

Having the thought of moving to North Carolina, it might be a good idea to get a correct matching number title for the Special. Earl had an advertisement in Hemmings Motor News about car titles. Don't know how he did it and don't want to know, just happy he did

It was sad to read about Earl Beauchamp, Jr. passing away, last October, from the Buick Bugle (January 2023, page 10). My first contact with Earl was in 1977, when I lived in Virginia. I had traded a 1928 Ford for a 1940 Buick Special four-door sedan, one of 68,000 made. It was not a Special because of the fact they made so few of them. It was traded to me with a 1939 title. At the time, that was okay, mainly because the car was used everyday for transportation to and from work and the State of Virginia did not care. A 48,000-mile original with all original interior and never

But he got me my title with matching numbers, sealed and delivered. Never forgot who he was after that and later met him a few times through the years. Don't meet many people with a name of Beauchamp. I think he knew everything about Buicks, or at least about 1939 to 1941 Buicks. He will be greatly missed by all old car lovers and by far, Buick car crazy people. Like me and all the car people I know. I am happy to say that I own, or am the caretaker of one of his 1939 Buick Special convertibles. A four-door sedan convertible. Earl saw the Buick pictured in the AACA national magazine in 2020 and contacted me about the car. We had a long talk about the ‘39 and the history of the car. In 2020 he typed out the full history of the 1939 Buick for me. This is something that will always stay with the car years from now, after I am long gone. Everyone who knew him and his cars will always know that he was the caretaker of it at one time. I have upgraded the Buick, to make it show-worthy. He did love to drive them. It has now won a National First place in 2020 and a Senior in 2021. I will be trying for a First place AACA Grand National in 2024, at Charlotte NC. Earl, your cars will live on and thank you for taking such good care of them.

DECEMBER 28, 1939 - NOVEMBER 19, 2022

By Sally Getz, BCA #22110

David William Brady, 82, of Emmaus, Pennsylvania died peacefully in his home on Saturday, November 19, 2022. He developed a love for “BUICKS” through his step-father, and got into working and repairing cars he could drive out of the local junk yards. He then got into restoring interiors of cars. Through a mutual “Buick” friend, Mr. Bruce Stephens of Bethlehem, PA, David bought the closed-up Studebaker/Packard dealership building in Emmaus, Pa. There, “Dave’s Interior Restorations” was born! David’s very first interior car and convertible top restoration was on one of his very own: “Miss Ruby” who is a 1947 - 56C Buick. David loved straight eight Buicks.

In September of 1976, David, along w/ eleven other Buick enthusiasts, got together during an annual car event, Das Awkscht Fescht, in Macungie, PA. There they talked, planned, organized

and formed the “Free Spirit” chapter. David was one of the eleven original founders of the “Free Spirit” Chapter, a charter chapter of the Buick Club of America. The “Free Spirit” chapter, is still in existence, and very active today. Over the years, David created and crafted many awardwinning interiors: cars, trucks and even airplane seats. It is noted he would help many persons out in many different ways without charging for his services. He will be greatly missed. David is survived by his wife, Deborah of 25 years. Sympathy goes out to his wife and his many friends in the car hobby. Contributions may be made to the o Sally Getz, 1060 Main Rd., Lehighton, PA 18235.

America National Meets Part1

Back when the Carolina Chapter was to host the 50th National Meet (not to be confused with the 50th Anniversary of the BCA in Allentown in 2016) I had planned to write this article. But admittedly I never got around to it and the meet(s) would go on to be infamously cancelled. Now with the 50th National Meet in Spokane approaching this summer I figured I better get to it. I myself have been to 33 of the 49 national meets to date. My first was at three years old in Columbus, OH. So while I have an extensive knowledge of the meets I still needed help documenting many of the meets in the ‘70s and early ‘80s so I want to acknowledge Bruce Kile for contributing many of his memories as he and Shar have attended more BCA National Meets than anyone else in the club. Also much of this article is directly attributable to the summaries of the meets published in the

the members section of buickclub.org website. Or, back issues of the printed copies are available from the North Texas Chapter for $5 each, plus postage).

My intent is for this to be a multi-part article in the Bugle culminating with the National Meet issue (typically the October Bugle) highlighting the 50th National Meet, but I leave that up to our esteemed editor’s discretion on how best to present the history to the membership.

THE 1970S

Flint, Michigan – August 7-8, 1971

The first National Meet is well documented. I highly recommend an article by Jack Gerstkemper in the May 2016 Buick Bugle Vol. 51 No. 2. It is most entertaining. The original summary of the meet was published in the Sept 1971 Bugle (Vol. VI, No. 5). On the grounds of the Buick Motor Division Administration Building and Terry Dunham was the meet chair and it was

Buick logo produced by the Buick Foundry (Though lost to time the modern day Buick Heritage Alliance is a tribute to this trophy). Notably, Joe Taubitz was running the Buick “Bug” through its paces with local TV there to document it.

Flint, Michigan - August 12 -13, 1972

Deemed the Buick Recall for its second year Hank Reus, Sr. was heavily involved in this meet and many of his Baltimore area friends assisted as Terry Dunham was scheduled for a meeting in LA the day before the event. The Durant Hotel was the

host hotel but the BMD Administration building served as the show field, while Buick allowed some of the attendees to park their Buicks in the underground garage for storage. 152 Buicks were displayed for 7,000 members of the public to view. The first swap meet occurred the day after the car show interestingly with 60 vendors. A parade of 60 Buicks navigated across Flint to the Sloan Museum on Sunday as well. The last notable item mentioned in the Bugle summaryis that the 1938 Y-job was displayed and that until this event, was thought to no longer exist. When Buick was advised it was simply in storage they secured it and made it ready for the event. Bugle summarypublished in Vol. VII, No. 7, Nov. 1972.

Flint, Michigan August 4-5, 1973

With the previous year being dubbed the “recall” the third National meet was heralded as the reunion. Everything was once again held at the Buick Administration building with BCA Chapter Buicktown serving as the hosts. The Warwick Inn served as the host hotel and it is noted a 1917 touring car was the first to arrive, presumably driven there. Hank Reus, Sr. served as Chief Judge for the 186 Buicks in attendance. Strolling banjo players entertained guests and George Dammann was on hand signing copies of his then newly-published 70 Years of Buick book. John Gerstkemper served as emcee for the banquet. The swap meet was held on both Saturday and Sunday, while Sunday also had factory tours and the parade to the Sloan museum. Buick Bugle Vol. VIII, No.

6, October 1973 No Meet - 1974

Due to the fuel crisis the decision was made not to have a meet.

Flint, Michigan - August 2-3, 1975

Joe Taubitz served as Meet Chair for the second time having taken over from Terry Dunham who handled ’71 and ’72. Bruce Kile recalls driving his 1936 Buick to this meet and there was day-of-show registration. Hank Reus was once again Chief Judge and there was a planned excursion for attendees to do a plant tour. The administration building served as the

show field and Sheraton Inn was the host hotel. There is very little published about this show. The Dec. ’75 President’s message noted that the photos from the event were lost in the mail so just a list of class winners is noted in the Volume 10, No. 9, January 1976 issue. Aside from the lack of photos I could find no writeup summarizing the event, either.

Flint, Michigan - July 31 – August 1, 1976

About 250 cars attended the fifth BCA National entered from 17 states and Canada. A rare 1942 McLaughlin Buick was shown with the original painted grille and painted trim. The Sloan Museum brought out a replica of the original Flint Buick with the replication completed over the previous year by the museum. It is noted in the Buick summary that the BCA National would become a bi-annual event after this show and the next meet would occur in 1978. However the NE Ohio Chapter had a large showing of cars and attendees for this event which would be fortuitous towards moving the event outside of Flint for the first time, they also handled registration as they had in 1975. Strongsville, Ohio – July 30-31, 1977

Shortly after the ’76 meet a Bugle announcement noted there would be no meet in 1977. Quickly thereafter the NE Ohio Chapter offered to host the 1977 meet in lieu of it becoming a bi-annual event. This was met with stiff opposition at first from the BCA Board, but thanks to the intervention of Joe Taubitz and Buicktown who were significantly in favor, the Board relented and agreed to hold the first BCA National Meet outside of Flint. idea for the Gopher State Chapter to host the meet in Minnesota in 1979. The Kiles organized a caravan of 25-30 cars that drove to the meet together (perhaps the humble beginnings of the BDE in retrospect). Unfortunately it rained on the caravan the whole way and apparently funnel clouds could be seen in the distance from the hotel, whose parking lot served as the show field. It rained for judging too, unfortunately and Bruce recalls judging with no shoes and looking through the ’38 Buicks to judge the engine compartment (Don’t’ kill the car!).

With an evening river cruise tour organized along with a tour of Betty Crocker’s Kitchen, this meet seemingly began the tradition of the host chapter organizing tours of the local tourist venues for the out of town members to enjoy. With 340 cars in

’31 all the way from CA. for the event, and Lewis Jenkins brought four cars. Bruce noted this was the first meet held in the hotel parking lot and the chapter members donated the booze that flowed free of charge in the hospitality room. Dick Boyer headed up judging of the 202 Buicks. The Best of Show received a painting of their car by Ken Liska and it hung in the office of the winner, Lewis Jenkins, until his passing. It appears as though also becoming a tradition was the meet starting earlier in the week with members arriving Thursday or earlier (also occurred in ’77), but yet to be officially noted as meet dates. Documented for the first time was that tours and the swap meet were held ahead of the show (though this could have occurred at earlier shows, but was not documented). North Texas Chapter Tours a Private Car Collection

On January 15th, the North Texas Chapter of the BCA held its monthly meeting and then visited a very special private collection of restored cars in a Dallas-area suburb. The collection is owned by Sam Pack who owns several Ford dealerships in this part of Texas. As you might expect, the collection is largely made up of Fords,

Lincolns, and Mercurys, but there are other makes, including a couple of Buicks. The collection is not open to the public, but car clubs and other groups can occasionally tour this phenomenal showroom. Thanks to North Texas Chapter members Leslie Fry and Chuck Nixon for arranging this tour, and to Sam Pack for allowing us to come. ♦

Less than half of the collection is on display here. The rest is housed in another building. The collection is mostly Ford products, since the owner is a Ford dealer.

THE RISE & FALL OF THE BUICK T TYPES

Editor’s note: Once again, I want to thank George Toth for taking the time to write down his excellent knowledge of relatively latemodel Buick history. The T-Type Buicks of the 1980s have not been covered in a comprehensive manner anywhere else, to my knowledge. Thank you, George! I have supplemented the author’ s illustrations with some sales brochures from my own collection

At some point in the late 1970s Buick recognized the need for a new model to replace the Regal Sport Coupe turbo. It was also becoming apparent that the traditional Buick/Olds buyer, the middle management executive, was looking for something different, and more exciting than the current offerings.

GM would be getting a new CEO to replace the retiring Murphy, Lloyd Ruess would soon be moving to Chevrolet, and management would be reshuffled as was customary. It was in this atmosphere

that Buick came up with the name T Type to represent a new type of Buick vehicle one that exhibited a more sporty appearance, firmer suspension, and better handling. The idea was to compete with what was becoming the next foreign invasion, the performance sedan from Europe that was catching the eye of the traditional middle executive buyer. At this time the European performance sedans were not being sold in large numbers, but each month and year over year a trend was evolving. Of course Mercedes was already entrenched in the U.S. market, but other makes such as Audi and BMW were starting to increase sales in the performance sedan market.

Buick was working on performance variants of the current lineup under the leadership of Lloyd Ruess who was transferred back to Buick. The first T Type was the 1981 Riviera with a turbocharged

V-6. Still using the carbureted version of the turbo 3.8, it was a relatively limited build and was the performance suspension and motor package that debuted as the Motor Trend car of the year for 1979, Riviera S Type. Of course, all T Types had blackout grilles, headlamp bezels, and moldings to give them the European look. Remember at this time Buick was developing a new performance motor, the fuel-injected 3.8 Turbo, but that was hush-hush.

In 1981 the new refreshed Regal body was more aerodynamic and was very popular with the NASCAR crowd with Darryl Waltrip driving a Regal to the championship in 1981& 1982, and Bobby Allison in 1983 (the 1981 and 1983 co-champions were Chevrolet and Buick). In late 1982 Buick produced a limited production Regal, called the Grand National, although the SFI motor was not ready for this vehicle most were built with the 4.1-Litre V6, and but a handful with the carbureted Turbo 3.8. A new option of custom adjustable leather and cloth Leer-Seigler seats was also offered.

1983 saw the T Type expanded to the new Century and Regal. The 1983 Regal T Type brought an optional package with a low restriction exhaust, that was carried over from 1982, and of course the blackout moldings that were common on T Types. Still no fuel injected 3.8. The Century T-Type, was available in 2- and 4-door models, although the 2-door was discontinued for 1986. Initially the Century T Type was available with the 3.0 V6 but in midyear 1984 the 3800 V6 became available, which offered a notable performance increase. Both vehicles were available with the LeerSeigler seats.

The SFI Turbo was introduced in the 1984 Regal T Type, followed later in the year by Riviera. The performance gain from fuel injection was amazing, and it gave the Regal and Riviera performance numbers that matched their suspensions. In 1986 the inter-cooled 3.8 turbo added and as is often said “the rest is history”.

1983 T Type Riviera features turbine-style wheels and a blacked-out grille. The smaller Riviera was introduced for the 1986 model year. Here’s a 1987 Rivera T Type from the 1987 sales brochure.

A new T Type was added in fall of 1985 to a new Buick, the Somerset. This sub-compact body would gradually take over the Skylark name and retain its T Type model.

In December 1985 Buick built an extremely limited production LeSabre that they badged as a Grand National. The build was only 117 units and was identifiable by Grand National badging and a block out that reduced the 1/4 window. Other than the different badging, firmer suspension and the enhanced ¼ window, it was essentially a 1986 LeSabre. The purpose was to get the LeSabre certified to run in NASCAR. These units are virtually impossible to find today, and of course are very desirable.

1987 brought the LeSabre T Type, with the same blacked-out trim, and sporty suspension. Initially it was to have had a rear deck spoiler but this was not available until 1988. The special alloy wheels would also show up a year later on the Reatta. It was produced through the 1989 model run and was rather stylish but was powered by the base motor.

As it has been said many times, “all good things must come to an end.” And that end came in late fall of 1987. At that time, I attended a special product meeting for dealers at the GM training center. What the Buick zone people showed us was a film from Ed Mertz announcing the new direction for Buick. It included pictures of Grand National and Lesabre T Type with the red circle with a slash through it. No longer would they build vehicles that had very good ride and handling suspensions. They would revert back to the cushy suspensions that were the hallmark of Buick for years, with smooth reserved power. We all knew the end of the 3.8 Turbo was upon us as there was no 1988 model that carried the motor. Almost immediately the T Type designation started to disappear to change the image to that which corporate had dictated. This was a time when GM was hemorrhaging money

and corporate had to make some difficult product decisions that were questionable in hindsight. The product cuts continued for a number of years, not only hurting Buick but the rest of GM. Many nameplates were dropped like the Fiero and Reatta through the late 1980s to the early 1990s culminating in the closure of numerous plants and ultimately the entire Oldsmobile line of cars.

In the final analysis the T Type program was very successful and it drew a somewhat younger audience. The subsequent cuts, including Oldsmobile, led a number of dealers to ask for a sport sedan to combat the current influx of European sedans, but nothing was coming. An old sales bromide holds true, “you can sell an old man a young man’s automobile, but you cannot sell a young man an old man’s automobile.” The demise of the T Type Buicks was pretty much over by 1991 sadly, but the T Type vehicles are, for the most part, low volume making them very desirable and

The Buicks of 1973 are now 50 years old. Let’s look at the full-size Buicks of that year. In a future month, we will go over the midsized 1973 Buicks (Century, Regal, and GS). 1973 was a year of rapidly rising gasoline prices (does that sound familiar?). This did not affect new Buick sales as much as you might think, although it did the following year 1974. 1973 was the third year of the 1971 total redesign of GM’s full-size cars. Therefore, the 1973 bodies were nearly the same as ‘71, with changes limited to the bumpers, grilles, tail lights, and other trim. Doors, glass, dashboards, and the sides of the big Buicks were still the same as in the two previous years. Ditto, for the chassis and frame.

Did we say “bumpers”? Yes, we did! 1973 was the first year for the U.S. government’s requirement of five-mile-per-hour bumpers on the new cars. This meant that the front bumpers had to withstand a collision at five M.P.H. or less without sustaining permanent body damage. So, bumpers were enlarged and mounted on springs or shock absorbers, which meant they extended out from the rest of the car by a few inches, adding to the car’s length. Some designers and manufacturers were more successful than others in giving the new bumpers a good visual fit to the car.

1973 LESABRES

The LeSabres of 1973 were divided into two different trim levels: LeSabre and LeSabre Custom. Both came in three body styles: Four-door sedan; four-door hardtop; and two-door hardtop. The convertible in the LeSabre line had been eliminated, after selling

more exterior trim and fancier upholstery than the LeSabre; otherwise they were the same. With the new bumpers, all LeSabres were now 224 inches long on a 124-inch wheelbase. The cars were 79.6 inches wide more than 6-1/2 feet. Shipping weight was a hefty 4,284 pounds before any passengers were added. The standard engine was a 350 cubic inch V-8 with two-barrel carburetor, rated at 150 horsepower. An optional four-barrel 350 brought it up to 175 horsepower. A further, but not often seen, option was the 455 V-8 with four-barrel carburetor.

Standard equipment on all 1973 LeSabres included variable ratio power steering, power front disc brakes with rear drum brakes, side guard door beams inside the doors, and Turbo Hydra-Matic 375 transmission with the 350 V-8 (T.H. 400 transmission with the 455 V-8).

Here are the model numbers, body styles, and production figures:

words, that meant the big Electra s 455 engine in the smaller LeSabre body.

By 1973, however, high performance had been deemphasized and fuel efficiency was beginning to become a concern. Buick’s response was to make the 350 V-8 with four-barrel carburetor the standard engine in the 1973 Centurions, with two versions of the 455 fourbarrel (with or without dual exhausts and a larger fourbarrel carburetor) being optional. The following year, 1974, the Centurion series would be completely eliminated.

The Centurion’s body and chassis were the same dimensions as the LeSabre: 124” wheelbase; 224” overall length. As with the LeSabre, standard equipment included variable ratio power steering, power front disc brakes, and Turbo Hydra-matic transmission. The Centurion was in the middle price level between the LeSabre and the Electra, so it had slightly fancier interior trim and upholstery than the LeSabre. Centurion hoods do not have portholes, for some reason. LeSabres and Electras do have them.

There were three Centurion body styles/models, as follows:

The Centurion convertible was the only Buick convertible that was offered for 1973. With the elimination of the LeSabre convertible, Centurion convertible production more than doubled the 1972 figures. This may have been due to the realization among new Buick buyers and collectors that the days of full-size Buick convertible production were rapidly coming to a close.

1973 ELECTRA 225s

The 1973 Electras came in two different series: Electra 225 and Electra 225 Custom. The Custom series had fancier upholstery and interior door panels, but was otherwise the same as the Electra 225. In addition, there was a third, higher trim level available as an option in the Electra 225 Custom models: Limted. The Limited was not considered a separate model, so we have no production figures for it. There were only two body styles: Two-door hardtop or fourdoor hardtop.

The 1973 Electras sat on a 127-inch wheelbase, which is three inches longer than the LeSabre and Centurion. With the new bumpers, the overall length was 229.8 inches long! Keep in mind that the Electra 225 series took its name from its original length of 225 inches, so the ‘73 models are several inches longer than that. The shipping weight is 4,581 pounds. All 1973 Electras are powered by the 455 cubic inch V-8 with four-barrel carburetor and 8.5 to 1 compression ratio, which was rated at 225 horsepower.

Even though these are very large cars, they are quite easy to drive due to the variable ratio power steering, power front disc brakes,

Turbo Hydra-matic transmission, and the torque of the 455 V-8. They have a 25-gallon gas tank (one source says 26 gallons), so gas fill-ups can be expensive. The brocade cloth upholstery in the Limited models is absolutely beautiful. The rear axle ratio is 2.73 to 1. Here are the model numbers and production figures, at right.

So, from these figures, we see that the top-of-the-line Electra 225 Custom four-door hardtop was by far the most popular of all 1973 full-size Buicks. In 1973 and 1974, I was working as a part-time teller at the biggest bank in my hometown. Both the bank president and the senior vice president drove 1973 Electra 225 Limited fourdoor hardtops.

ESTATE WAGONS

There’s one more full-size 1973 Buick that we need to mention, and that is the station wagon. These could be considered part of the Electra series, since they use the Electra’s 127” wheelbase and are 229 inches long. These are the “clamshell” wagons, with the tailgate that drops down and the tailgate window that retracts upwards into the roof. They were in their third year in 1973. All came equipped with the 455 V-8 with four-barrel carburetor. Despite their large size, their heavy weight (4,952 pounds), and thirst for gasoline, an amazing 35,795 of them were sold. They came with either two seats or three seats, with the three-seat version being the more popular one with 23,513 sold. The two-seat version had a list price of $4,573 and the three-seat version went for $4,712.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING ONE

These Buicks all have a black and white strip of rubber running across their front and rear bumpers, to protect the plating if they get bumped. These rubber strips are impossible to replace, so check the condition of them. These cars also have very large, padded dashboards. If the car has sat outside a lot in the hot sun, the dash pad will be cracked. Removal and replacement of the dash pad is very difficult (you have to be a contortionist!) and to get one repaired or re-formed is very expensive. Sometimes a protective cover for the dash pad can be found or made if you know someone who is good at sewing. Another part that deteriorates on cars that are from hot, sunny climates is the lower half of the interior door panels, which are all plastic.

A very annoying part on these cars is the Neoprene ring that is found on all of the door latches, and is guaranteed to wear out and fall off after much use. This makes the doors impossible to close all the way unless you slam them and slamming is not good for the little Neoprene wheels that guide the frameless door glass through the window regulators. The replacement Neoprene (or white plastic) door latch rings can sometimes be found if the auto parts store has a good selection of the “Help” brand small parts, or you can find them at old car swap meets. Wrapping a bunch of electrical tape around the door latch, in place of the missing plastic ring, is a temporary fix.

Vinyl tops were a very popular option on these cars. However, if water gets underneath the vinyl, the roof will begin to rust, so check for telltale bubbles under the vinyl. With the convertibles, check the operation of the “scissors” top, in which the side roof rails fold inwards. These can give trouble.

In the 1973 models, GM still had not fixed the problem of dirt, leaves, and water collecting under the reveal moldings around the windshield and back glass of these cars. Therefore, if the car has sat outside a lot, check for rust holes and water damage around the windshield ahead of the dashboard, and around the back glass on the rear package shelf and inside the trunk. The big, five-m.p.h. bumpers are also known for trapping dirt and salt, rusting out from the inside.

The door step plates on these cars sit at an angle, rather than flat. Therefore, they frequently catch the unlatched seat belt buckles,

28 BUICK BUGLE ● March 2023

which will dent and mangle the aluminum step plates. So, open the doors and check the condition replacements are not too hard to find. Check for cracked or missing tail light lenses they are large and replacements are difficult to find because reproductions are not being made.

The inside hood release handle and the driver’s kick panel that it resides in are both made of plastic and are subject to cracking or coming loose. So, check for proper operation of the hood release cable.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN JUDGING ONE

All wheels and tires should be 15 inches in diameter. The chrome wheels with center caps are an option on any of these Buicks. Wide whitewalls and raised white letter tires are incorrect for these cars. If the car has a 350 V-8, it should have a single exhaust, not duals. If the car has a 455, it may have single or dual exhaust. The engines should be painted red with a semigloss black air cleaner, with a decal giving the engine’s size.

The Centurion convertibles should have a glass back window. ♦

Magic I BELIEVE IN

I still don’t understand, why the Buick Centurion was only built for three years: from 1971 until 1973. Was it the oil crisis or was it just a product-strategic decision? Anyway, in the final model year Buick produced a total number of 44,881 Centurions which were offered in these three body styles: Four-door hardtop; two-door hardtop; and two-door convertible. Who

Many people don’t even know that the Centurion existed at all. This also becomes obvious when searching for parts in the internet since the “Centurion” is quite often not listed as model in various selection dropdowns. Apart from different emblems and omitted venti-port trim, the sedan as well as the coupe were optically and technically very similar to their companions in the LeSabre line. However, the convertible version was the only convertible in Buick's entire model range for 1973. And particularly the convertible of ’73 has a magical appeal for me. Powerful, racy and sporty, but at the same time still elegant and stylish – exactly the mixture that I love! Fortunately, the 1970’s Centurion had nothing in common with the concept study of the same name exhibited at the Motorama Auto Show in 1956.

length of 224.2 inches and a wheelbase of 124 inches, the Centurion really was a fullsize car that deserved its name! It was available with either a 350 V-8 (175 hp) as mine, or a 455 V-8 (250 hp). The smaller engine came along with the THM 350 transmission and single exhaust, the larger with the THM 400 and a dual exhaust system.

When I purchased the vehicle in March 2015 at a Dutch car dealership specialized in US cars, I first needed to figure out the best way how to get the Buick to my hometown in Germany. A friend of mine recommended me not to think about driving home several hundred kilometers in a car I didn’t really know the condition of. Even if the dealer assured that the car was in proper shape, I didn’t want to rely on the promises of an unknown person who, of course, primarily was interested in doing business and earning money. So I decided to listen to my friend and ordered a towing service that picked up the Centurion in Tilburg (Netherlands) and took it piggyback to Karlsruhe (Germany) –a distance of almost 500 km.

It soon turned out that this was a good and reasonable decision. Shortly after I started cleaning the underbody of the Buick using a wire brush to remove some surface rust and dirt for later preservation by corrosion protection paint, I had a shocking experience. While cleaning the engine oil

pan, one or more little "rust plugs" apparently caused by pitting came loose and the engine oil started penetrating through the pan wall ... until most of the engine oil had drained. Because everything was completely oily around the leak area, it was practically impossible to somehow seal the oil pan while it was installed. Neither applying any sealant from outside nor welding had been an option. For me the only sustainable solution was to remove the broken oil pan from the engine and replace it with a new or good used one. But that was easier said than done. First, new aftermarket oil pans don't seem to be available for this type of engine. And second, even used oil pans are extremely hard to find. It took me about eight weeks to come across the only one that was offered on eBay at that time. And to make matters worse, it was an auction item, so that I couldn't be sure that I would win the bid in the end. Finally, I made it, but the days until I was able to purchase the part and the weeks until I held it in my hands were extremely tough.

I don't want to think about what might have happened if the oil pan had started leaking while driving, in the winter, far away from home! I think everyone here can empathize with this situation. But the problem had not been solved yet since the replacement oil pan still needed to be installed. And I felt unable to fix that by myself due to a lack of equipment and experience, too. It was not easy to find a professional who dared to tackle this problem and who was willing to take a certain risk with it.

Luckily, Hartmut Hofmann, who owns a nearby auto repair shop, agreed to take on this problem although this was the very first Centurion he ever had in his garage. And indeed, it was quite tricky to find out the right procedure how to remove the old pan. Not only the front exhaust pipework had to be removed. Also, the entire drive train (engine with attached transmission and drive shaft) needed to be loosened and lifted to get the pan out and in again. Many thanks again to Hartmut for fixing this horrible issue.♦

The original oil pan had some pinhole leaks and had to be replaced. The car is equipped with a 350 cu. in. four-barrel V-8. German license plate and a perfect rubber strip across the front bumper. The right side has a clock and (aftermarket in this case) radio.

A 1973 BUICK LESABRE SURVIVOR

What could be more exciting than buying a new car? How about buying a new oldcar? That was the opportunity I seized upon when I learned about this incredible 1973 Buick LeSabre Custom four door sedan for sale.

In 2020 I repeatedly looked at an ad on eBay for a 1973 Buick LeSabre Custom sedan with 5,100 original miles! The seller was a classic car dealership in Missouri, whose inventory is often featured on the auction site. The ad for this particular car was up for several months and kept getting re-listed. Assuming the mileage was really that low, I was curious as to why no one had bought the car.

I contacted a fellow BCA member, Adam Martin, who lives in the area and Adam was kind enough to inspect the car for me. He indicated that the low mileage claim was legitimate and that the car

was the real deal. He commented that there were still paper tags affixed to the brake lines! I had one question for Adam. What color is the car? The dealership was advertising it as colonial yellow, which was an available paint color in 1973. Adam confirmed the car definitely is colonial yellow. All of the dealership’s photos of the car had been color enhanced, so the car in the ad appeared to be painted a bright, lemon yellow. That would explain why the car was still for sale a “TAXI” sign on the roof would not have looked out of place!

Back in the 1970s, earth tones were used on everything varying shades of yellow, orange, gold, green, brown and blue showed up

on clothing, cars, home furnishings…for those around in the ‘70s-do you remember harvest gold appliances? Colonial yellow may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but this butterscotch hued Buick is certainly indicative of the period in which it was made. In combination with its saddle interior, this LeSabre exudes an autumnal palette…it would look advertisement perfect driving down any sun-dappled, treelined street with the brightly colored leaves of October framing its path.

The reason why this car sat garaged for decades, unused, remains a mystery. From what little information I received, the original owner special-ordered the car to get it in this color. It is factory equipped with air conditioning , an AM radio and not much else. At some point during the short amount of time it was driven, the AM radio was swapped out for a Motorola AM/FM 8track player. Thankfully, the dash was not cut to fit it in. The owner passed the car

along to her daughter, who also left the car to sit. Eventually her children inherited the car and they sold it to the dealership, which made the LeSabre roadworthy again new fluids, tires, belts, etc.

Was the OPEC oil embargo of 1973 to blame? American car owners were faced with spiking gas prices, gas rationing and gas shortages at that time. Drivers had to contend with the new reality that the days of cheap and plentiful gasoline were

36 BUICK BUGLE ● March 2023

potentially numbered. Perhaps the family owned a second, smaller, more fuel efficient car that took over duties as the daily driver? 1973 is the year some automotive journalists have pointed to as the beginning of the “malaise”era of American car manufacturing. The 1970s cars were some of the biggest cars ever made. The cars had to comply with the stricter emissions standards the federal government had put in place. This resulted in greatly reduced horsepower and poor fuel economy.

1973 was the first year for the federally mandated 5-m.p.h. front bumpers. Bumpers designed to absorb a 5-m.p.h. impact without sustaining any damage. American car companies were scrambling to design cars that met the standard, while still creating aesthetically pleasing models. Some car makers achieved these goals more successfully than others! Buick did a fine job meeting the mandate and was still capable of producing handsome looking automobiles. Claims to the contrary, the “malaise” era was not all doom and gloom. Of the cars produced at the time, there were some gems amongst the duds!

When I met the shipper to pick up the Buick, I was not disappointed when I first saw the car. For something that is so old (automotive wise) to still appear so new is quite impressive. This is about as close as you can get to experiencing what it was like to buy a new car in the 1970s! Certain clues reflect the low mileage, like the way the turn signal switch clicks tightly into position and the way the transmission selector moves firmly and precisely between park, reverse and drive. No squeaks or rattles driving down the road, either!

After getting the car, I was able to source a correct, N.O.S., right side mirror, which is a welcome addition in helping to navigate such a wide car! N.O.S. door edge guards have been fitted as well. A custom dash mat has been added to protect the pristine dashboard and a

set of color matched reproduction floor mats finishes off the interior nicely. In order to give the 350-4 engine some added oomph, a new, custom made dual exhaust system has been installed.

Cars like this take me right back to my younger years. As a teenager in the 1970s, these were the types of cars I learned to drive in and owned second-hand. Driving the LeSabre, which currently has less than 7,000 miles on it, produces a feeling of familiarity. It’s like slipping into a favorite pair of comfortable jeans.

There are car enthusiasts who won’t consider buying a four-door. Only coupes and convertibles are deemed “worthy” of collecting to some. But the coupes and convertibles that were often produced in fewer numbers than their four-door counterparts are more likely to survive today. Why? Coupes and convertibles, with their more expensive price tags and often higher option loads were more likely to have been better cared for and kept longer. Four-door sedans, four-door hardtops and station wagons were the grocery getters of their day. These mass-produced cars of decades past were thought of as expendable. The cars would end up worn out, rusted out and/ or wrecked. Vast numbers of cars met their demise in demolition derbies, or as parts donors for the restoration of the more desired coupes and convertibles.

Station wagons have been garnering more respect in recent years and have been sought after for some time now, which has increased their value. Four-door cars are now the rare cars. I’m here to say that four-door cars are fine collectibles. The view from behind the

hood is the same whatever the body style!

I’m one of those collectors who gives nicknames to their cars. I know that can be annoying or obnoxious to some, but it’s all in fun. This LeSabre has been nicknamed “Maude” after the ‘70s sitcom of the same name. Couldn’t you just picture actress Bea Arthur, as Maude Findlay, sitting behind the wheel of this car? I imagine her stuck in a New York traffic jam, impatiently berating her husband, played by Bill Macy, telling him “God’ll get you for that Walter!”♦

The LeSabre has a 350 cubic inch V8 with four-barrel carburetor, power steering, power brakes, and air-conditioning. The back seat has probably had little if any use.
