JULY 2021 July 1-3, 2021 - Auburn, Indiana.

AACA invites Buick owners to participate in its national in Auburn, IN. This unique event to promote the hobby will be great fun. There will be a Buick show field and a Buick flea market, both will be adjacent but separate from the AACA. We will have class judging and special awards. Awards are sponsored by the Buick Heritage Alliance. AACA members can be judged in both shows, or join the AACA with a special half-year membership rate to be judged in both.

Buick owners are also invited to take part in any and all AACA activities including a Friday night cruise-in and Saturday night BBQ. There are many area hotels in Auburn and Ft. Wayne. The private car collection of BCA members Bob and Sandra Bahre will be open for a one-day public viewing as a charity benefit for the Hamlin Memorial Library & Museum in Paris, Maine. Included are the 1940 Brewster-Buick Limited town car, plus Packards, Duesenbergs, Stutz Bearcats, a Tucker, several Brass-era cars, and others. The 2021 BCA SE Regional Tour, sponsored by the Gulf Coast Chapter BCA, is Thursday, November 11 through Sunday, November 14, in Fort Myers, Florida. After checking into the Best Western Waterfront, in North Fort Myers, on Thursday, meet and greet in the Hospitality Room and/or eat at one of the many restaurants in the area. We will tour the famous Revs (Collier) Car Museum, in Naples, enjoy a Murder Mystery Dinner Train ride, have a selfguided tour of the Edison and Ford

message from the board Our last meeting was on May 19th. Items on our agenda included normal reports. The main item was working with some insurance issues. We appointed an JOHN STEED insurance BCA PRESIDENT committee to work on these problems. Mike Book is the chair, and Sid Meyer and Jack Welch are the members of this new committee.

Serving as President has allowed me to learn a lot about our club. We rely on several volunteers for many of our club’s functions that most of us, or at least I, didn’t realize. Recently we had an issue with the Bugle. We have a couple of volunteers that usually catch these errors.

They proof the Bugle each month, and Roy Faries and Barney Eaton are so good that this problem seldom happens. I want to thank them for a job well done. We often forget the good work members do for us until there is a concern. They have been great servants to our club. There are so many other volunteers that I could list.

We also need to thank our contractors that make this club work. Without them we wouldn’t have a great club like we have now. We have three contractor roles. Our first contractors are Jen (the voice on the phone) and her husband Mark Wheeler (the man behind the curtain) of Cornerstone.

We are very fortunate to have them handle the business side of the club.

Second we have our Bugle Art Director, Shannon Olson. I am very pleased with Shannon’s can-do attitude. She puts together the pictures and layout of the Bugle. Shannon does a wonderful job creating a truly great magazine.

Finally, we have our Bugle Editor, Pete Phillips. Most members join and stay in our club for one reason, to receive the Bugle. Pete has been our editor for 15 years. During his time as editor, he has kept our members entertained with various interesting Buick stories and facts. I have really appreciated how Pete keeps finding interesting information for us to read. I am also grateful that Pete is a self-starter who does his job, requiring minimal input from the board.

Without our contractors we would not have the outstanding club we have. Please show your appreciation to them the next time you meet them.

As I finish my time as President, I’ve been reflecting on the role of leadership. Before my father died, he spent several thousand dollars installing field tile on the farm. I asked him why he was doing this as he wouldn’t probably recoup the cost during his lifetime. Dad explained that he wanted to leave the farm better than he found it. I hope that I leave the BCA better than I found it as I finish my term as President. I know that all our board members have the same goal. Thank you for trusting us to lead your club.

By Sharon E. Poupart, BCA #34965, Southington, CT THE “CLEAN CAR” GUY Emery Wade Turner was born ready to pilot a Buick automobile. He owned and appreciated 14 classics over the years, four of which were Buick Regals. Emery was most comfortable in his two- and four- door 225 chariots.

He married Yolanda Fountain Turner in 1997 and together they brought sons Payton and Camron into the world of wheels and church-based faith. Emery served as a trustee of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Middletown, CT. This commitment was the driving force behind everything he did.

As an involved member of the BCA, Connecticut Yankee Chapter since 2007, he had a “seat at the table” making plans for all chapter affairs. Emery left us on March 4, 2021. A giant and gentle man has left the table. His passing is a monumental loss to all who knew and loved him.

We have been informed that Art Wright of Chandler, Arizona passed away on May 19th at the age of 73.

Buicks and owned a restoration shop in Tempe, Arizona where he restored many Buicks of the 1950s.

He was the Buick Club's Technical Advisor for 1957

Our condolences go out to his family and friends.

He was the BCA's Technical Advisor on 1963-1965 Rivieras, and also a member of the Riviera Owners Association. He served four terms on the BCA Board of Directors from 2003 to 2017.

Our sympathy goes out to his wife Debby, and the rest of his family and friends.

by A.M. Pate, Jr. and Jim Peel. Pate was the President of the Texas Refinery

Corporation in Fort Worth. He started the Pate Transportation Museum at the company’s recreation ranch southwest of Fort Worth in the late 1960s. Jim Peel was the Curator at the museum (and he sold me

the second antique Buick that I ever bought—a ‘61 LeSabre). In its first years, the swap meet was held in late April at the museum’s spacious grounds. After Mr. Pate died in the 1990s, the museum was closed

The Buick’s price was $17,000. It had an older repaint and new, correctly done upholstery and Wilton wool carpet.

This 1965 Wildcat was for sale for $15,000. It had a vinyl bench seat and an advertised 68,000 miles.

The swap meet continued, being relocated to the Texas Motor Speedway north of Fort Worth in the late 1990s.

Although it is not as big as the annual Hershey, Pennsylvania swap meet, it is the largest one in the southwestern United States, and attracts people from all over the central U.S. and elsewhere.

It is large enough that you cannot cover it all in one day, but you can in two days.

Last year’s meet was first rescheduled to the fall and then canceled completely due to the virus epidemic. This year, the organizers stuck with it and were rewarded with one of the largest, best attended meets that they have ever held.

I did not see anyone doing anything foolish—except for those vendors who cannot leave their political signs and banners at home. Most folks were being cautious. A few had masks on, but when everyone is outdoors and there’s a good breeze to clear the air, some outdoor buying and selling doesn’t hurt anyone.

The Buicks and Buick parts were few and far between, this being Ford and Chevrolet country. Porcelain-enamel oil company and automobile dealership signs seemed to be the biggest thing this year, with every 5th or 6th space having some for sale at continually higher and higher prices. ♦

SPRINGTIME IN CENTRAL INDIANA

Yes, it really is springtime 2021 in Central Indiana! Just as winter brings out festive Christmas decorations, spring brings out Buicks and their enthusiastic owners. On Saturday, March 20th the Central Indiana Buick Club got together to think spring and enjoy collector cars.

Club member Walter Habeeb made arrangements for our club to tour the Ray Skillman Collector Cars in Greenwood, Indiana. This collection includes not only Buicks, but many other marques as well. Also represented were Indy 500 race cars, USAC race cars and NASCAR vehicles. One of our favorites was the beautiful 1954 Skylark convertible with the top down. Many automotive collector items are displayed for the enjoyment of visitors. Right in the center of the display is a beautifully restored and operating turn-of-thecentury carousel.

After about two hours of visual enjoyment and remembering we dismissed to Smokey Bones BBQ Restaurant for lunch and a time of fellowship. Twenty people made it out for this delightful spring event.

The Central Indiana Chapter will be hosting the 32nd Annual B.O.P.C. (Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Cadillac) Car Show on June 5th at the beautiful Memorial Park in Lebanon, Indiana. At our annual January club planning meeting Jim Smith volunteered to direct our club's hosting efforts. Jim immediately began to put together a team of Buick volunteers in an effort to make 2021 the best BOPC show yet. Working with club Director Jay Hodges, Jim has been enlisting Central Indiana BCA member volunteers for registration, parking, scoring, etcetera. Other efforts required to host the four club events are proceeding well. ♦

Long Island Chapter, Keeping Active During the Pandemic!

It certainly has been an unusual year for our chapter!

While 2020 seemed to have started off in the usual manner, things changed by our March meeting which was abruptly cancelled due to warnings from the CDC and local health department relating to gatherings, especially for those over age 50. Since the majority of our members are in that category, it seemed wise to pay attention to the information.

We were able to host some meetings using the seemingly new video chat “Zoom” platform. It was great to be able to see and talk with each other, but people were really looking forward to the upcoming warmer months and being able to enjoy their cars.

By the end of May we were able to gather some of our members to take a nice ride through some lesstraveled areas of North Western Long Island. We were worried about being able to find places open and the availability of restrooms. We were able to stop in a parking area in one of our small towns, Cold Spring Harbor, to have somewhat of a picnic.

Luckily the town had decided to put a portable restroom in the parking lot! Definitely an uneasy time.

The summer was pretty much a wash-out as far as organized car shows went. There were some “cruise” spots where people would meet at shopping center parking lots, but none of the usual car shows, including what would have been our 41st Annual All-Buick Car Show which was supposed to take place on May 24th, 2020.

Luckily we generally have our monthly meetings at a local park. While we were not able to use the meeting room facilities, we did get the okay to meet outside socially distanced. Our Director, Marty Jablonski, tried to keep things interesting for our members. At one meeting he and several other members demonstrated how judging would be performed at a National Meet for those of us that have not participated at the national level. My brother Larry volunteered the use of his ’69 Skylark convertible. He and the other members present enjoyed the exercise and learned a bit about judging.

At one meeting, we had members bring their own food and we were able to have our annual picnic.

Member Andy Marone also gave an interesting talk about work he was doing on his 1917 Buick. Quite a bit different than working on more modern vehicles.

We were able to hold meetings through November because we had nice weather. Our November meeting was held next to Sun Buick GMC in Wantagh, owned by chapter member Patrick Cassino. Patrick was kind enough to provide several

new Buick and GMC models for us to check out. One of the new models recently introduced at the time was the Encore GX. We were also able to have a bit of a show, too, but didn’t want to advertise it as such because large gatherings were still prohibited,

and the town was not issuing permits. Our member Anthony Gatta and his boys were nice enough to bring their DJ equipment and provide music throughout the day. We have been trying to keep to a schedule of meeting once a month either live or by Zoom.

The weather cooperated in March of this year and we were able to have a meeting outside which was a very nice change of pace after all the snow we had here this winter.

I did not get pictures of all the Buicks, but I got most of them. I was a judge, and we had a couple of passing rain showers so my photo taking time was limited.

The '71 Riviera is original. All the Buicks were nice, but the '31 was gorgeous. The '69 GS and '71 GS were also eye-catchers. ♦

I grew up in the then small town of Walnut Creek, California during the late 1940s and 1950s. During those years my family got by with enough to put a roof over our heads and meals on the table, but we never had family cars that were as grand as the beautiful Buicks on the road.

In 1950, one of our neighbors had a very nice 1948 Buick Roadmaster convertible. I immediately fell in love with that long, beautiful, light green convertible. They later traded it in on a 1951 Buick Roadmaster convertible and then a year later traded it in on a 1952 Roadmaster Riviera coupe. From that point forward I always wanted a Buick but often they were out of my reach. When I learned to drive, my parents owned a used 1953 Pontiac Custom Catalina and later a 1956 Star Chief Custom Catalina four-door hardtop. Those were both nice cars, but I still wanted a Buick and several years I later wound up with a used 1964 Buick Electra convertible which I purchased from a Buick dealer in Walnut Creek in 1968. I kept that great car for a few years until I was involved in an accident by someone running a stop sign and putting the ’64 out of commission. I would wind up trading it in

on a used 1966 T-Bird that drew me to it on a used car lot (the Electra convertible in the first photo is with me and my nephew taken at my sister’s home in Concord, California in 1968).

Over the years I would continue owning large automobiles.

Following owning the T-Bird I would own large Fords or Mercury’s until I got back into wanting another General Motors large car. I wound up purchasing a new 1980 Cadillac El Dorado Biarritz which was a nice car, but it too was involved in a couple of major accidents, neither were my fault. One was someone running a red light taking out my left rear quarter and then a year later after I had moved to the Sierra Foothills, I was rear-ended avoiding a head-on collision on a two-lane stretch of Highway 49 north of Auburn, California. I got rid of the El Dorado and settled for a new 1982 Olds Regency coupe but my desire for another Buick from years past never left me.

I got a teaser of Buicks in the early 1990s when I was assigned a 1993 Buick Century sedan as a company car. That smaller version of a Buick gave me the taste of driving Buicks once again, but I still wanted a larger Buick.

Towards the end of 1999 I was at an antique car show in downtown Grass Valley, California where I spotted a 1964 Buick Riviera and decided that I would hunt down one of the firstgeneration Rivieras to purchase. At the end of 2000 I found a 1963 Riviera for sale in Auburn, California that had been stored for 20 years. I purchased the rather sound Riviera that was for sale at a reasonable cost and had it towed to a friend’s home who lived in Grass Valley, who was a mechanic. He got the old Riviera running again and outside of a worn-out Twin Turbine Dynaflow the old car was in amazingly good condition. I had the transmission rebuilt and then had it repainted from its oxidized Spruce Green paint to a beautiful, very deep, black paint.

I drove the ’63 Riviera for several years to local car shows and to three different BCA national meets, being the 2007 meet held in Bellevue, Washington; the 2009 meet in Colorado Springs, Colorado; and the 2014 meet in Portland, Oregon. I also drove it to the 2009 Riviera Owners Association national meet in Sacramento and the 2012 ROA meet in Monterey, California. During each of those long drives the only issue I ever had was needing to replace the fuel filter during the 2009 drive to Colorado Springs.

As I was aging, I decided to sell the ’63 Riviera and hunt for a later model with lower mileage and more optional equipment that I had in the ’63 version.

While the ’63 had full power options, it also had an air conditioner that was not terribly efficient in spite of the $2,300 or so I invested in bringing it back to life. And trying to cool a black car after several hours in the hot California sun of local car shows took a long time. I contacted a local company that lists antique cars across the nation. They put my ’63 online and it quickly sold to a purchaser in New Jersey who currently owns it and loves it.

I immediately went on an online search for 1979-85 Rivieras and discovered a 1984 white Riviera for sale in San Juan Capistrano, California with just under 40,000 miles on the odometer. When I began my online search, I had recalled how much I enjoyed the size and handling of the 1980 El Dorado, but decided that I didn’t want another Cadillac, rather would focus on finding a Riviera of that vintage. The Riviera in Southern California had low mileage and the photos and details convinced me that it would be the car to purchase. I flew from Sacramento Airport to John Wayne Airport during Labor Day weekend of 2017, took a shuttle to the car dealer and the minute I saw the 1984 Riv, I decided it was just what I’d been looking for. I drove it home to Grass Valley, California that weekend and it never missed a beat.

The only major purchase on the ’84 was replacing the tires. I discovered that the tires were over ten years old so decided to replace them with new tires for safety when I would drive it on the open road. Since the purchase of the ’84, I have taken it on local travels and as of this writing it has just over 44,000 original miles. I expect to keep it for many years and enjoy seeing it and others of that generation of Rivieras become more popular and go up in value.

By the way, our family cars have been two Buick Enclaves, one a 2008 and now driving a 2019 Enclave, both very nice, comfortable, cross-over SUVs. So, my dreams of owning Buicks when I was a kid to today never cease. I believe, even today with the onslaught of foreign cars on the market, that Buick will be my favorite automobile to drive off into the sunset. I believe in Buick’s early slogan of “When Better Automobiles Are Built, Buick Will Build Them.” ♦ At left, top to bottom; The 1963 Riviera upon purchase, after 20 years of storage. MY BUICK…. ERR OPEL

Editor's note: This is the first article I have ever received on Opels, which were made by GM in Europe (and later Japan) and sold by Buick dealers. They are part of the Buick story and heritage, so we present it here.

I’ve been lucky to own 10 Buicks ranging from 1937 to 2008, but this story is “Buick adjacent.” The late Bob Smith was a long-time member of the Richmond, Virginia Region AACA. He had several wonderful cars but sitting quietly under a carport behind his home was a pale green 1969 Opel Kadett wagon.

My family and I relocated from western New York State to the Richmond, Virginia area some years ago and also belong to the Richmond Region AACA, as well as BCA. I’d heard Mrs. Smith wanted the Opel gone and being familiar with the make I was interested. We made a deal and the well worn little car was trailered to my home across town.

Guy Bennett, Jr. is well known in Buick circles. His family operated a Buick dealership for many decades in Wayland, New York retiring in 2019. They maintain a large collection of significant Buicks and Buick memorabilia. I am a former employee, customer and family friend, and Guy has been one of my mentors in the antique car hobby. I knew that Bennett’s sold many Opels prior to the German versions no longer being imported. The sporty small cars were just the thing for Buick dealers in need of compact and fuel efficient options for their customers.

Naples, New York is a small town near Wayland known for its vineyards and wineries. Each year they hold an annual Grape Festival and the Bennett dealership often participated. They had a local artist, Roberta Johnson, make up some car toppers showing a version of “Mini-Brute,” the Opel elephant mascot, for use in the Grape Festival Parade.

While helping clean and sort at the Bennett garage recently we found one of these wonderful car toppers complete and in great condition. Of course we now had a 1969 Kadett that “needed” an elephant!

My son, Clay Fuhrman, has taken on the Kadett as his project. It runs and drives and gets lots of attention. It brings together our connection with the Bennett family, their historic dealership and our Virginia friends and car club members.

It’s our hope that one day Opel may have a class or category of its own in BCA. The Kadett, Manta, GT, Rekord and others are a special part of Buick’s story. ♦

Buicks of 1931 1n 1931, Buick became an all-eightcylinder automobile, having been an all-sixcylinder automobile the year before.

Adding additional cylinders was the best way to add more power to the engine. This is because compression ratios were quite low—around 4.5 to 1—and the gasoline was not that great, either.

Buick was maybe just a little bit late to offer an eight-cylinder engine. Studebaker and Packard had them by 1929; Dodge and DeSoto had them by 1930. Lincoln and Cadillac had them all through the 1920s.

Nash had one in some of its 1930 models and so did Hudson. Auburn had two eightcylinder models starting in 1928. So, a Buick eight was a little overdue by 1931.

in late 1929, before the stock market crash of late October.

There were three sizes of the new Buick straight eight: 220 cubic inches in the 50series; 272 cubic inches in the 60-series; and a whopping 344 cubic inches in the 80series and 90-series cars. 344 is as big as the Buick straight eight ever got, and yet it only put out 104 horsepower, due to the low compression ratio. Of course, the 344 engine had huge amounts of torque or turning power—think of it as momentum, once you get all of that cast iron and long connecting rods moving. It’s interesting to note that the largest six-cylinder Buick in 1930 had 99 horsepower, so the big eight only provided five more horses, but quite a bit more prestige.

Buick engineer John Dolza, who was only 27 years old at the time, is credited with most of the design of the new engines.

Making his job more difficult was an order from his supervisor that the engines should fit in the same size engine compartment as the six-cylinder engines. This meant that the bearing surfaces on the crankshaft would have to be thinner than with a six. To compensate for that, an external oil cooler or “oil temperature regulator” as Buick called it, was added to the right side of the eights. It’s basically a temperature exchanger or tiny radiator inside an enclosure, which holds the engine coolant.

Note to restorers: The outer walls of the oil temperature regulator are very prone to rusting out, and good ones can be hard to find. Some restorers coat the entire outer

shell with epoxy, when a solid one cannot be found.

The other big engineering news at Buick in 1931 was the introduction of Synchro-mesh transmissions in all but the 50-series Buicks. And by mid-year, even the 50series cars had synchronizers in their transmissions, mainly because virtually every other manufacturer had that in 1931.

Automatic spark control or distributor advance was another new item on the 1931 Buicks. This meant that the spark advance lever in the center of the steering column was eliminated, but a spark knob was put on the dashboard for those who still insisted on controlling the spark advance.

Therefore, the only two levers in the center of the steering wheel hub are the throttle control on top, and the parking and headlight control lever on the bottom.

1931, of course, was a bad economic year for the whole country and even the whole world. New Buick sales dropped to 90,873 cars, down from 119,277 the year before.

With the new straight eights, 1931 prices had only been raised by $25 per car, yet it might as well have been $250 per car, because few people during the Great Depression could even afford a new automobile, let alone an additional $25 for anything.

So, let’s look at each series for 1931.

50-SERIES The Marquette, Buick’s lower-priced companion car of 1930, was eliminated for 1931, but in a sense it reappeared as the 50series Buick. The early 1931 50-series Buicks used the Marquette’s 114-inch wheelbase and the Marquette’s open drive shaft (no torque tube). All other 1931 Buicks, including the late 1931 50-series cars, had the usual enclosed drive shaft or torque tube.

80-SERIES

60-SERIES

There were only two 80-series Buicks in 1931, and they both used the massive 344 cubic-inch eight-cylinder engine. They sat on a 124-inch wheelbase, which was the same as the 50-series cars of 1930 (yes, all of the series numbers get confusing!). In the middle of the Great Depression, it doesn’t seem very smart to have four different lines and sizes of Buicks, but Buick and GM management, as well as the United States President Herbert Hoover, all thought prosperity and the end of the depression were “just around the corner”.

The 60-series Buicks were its mid-sized series, sitting on a 118inch wheelbase (same as the 40-series cars in 1930). These used the new 272 cubic inch eight, which was the mid-sized motor, rated at 90 horsepower. The compression ratio is 4.6 to 1. This engine was used from 1931 through 1933. The dry engine holds 11.5 quarts of oil, or 8 quarts on a refill without oil filter. Wheels and tires are 19” in diameter.

There were five different models or body styles in the 60-series, as follows:

90-SERIES 1931 was the first year of the big, 90-series Buicks, which would be the top of the line for the next 11 years, through the shortened 1942 model year, and then they would never reappear. These massive cars came to be known as the Limited series. Their eventual demise was partly due to complaints from Cadillac’s managers who felt

that Buick was intruding on their market. Never produced in very large numbers, the 90-series Buicks were the first Buicks to be considered Classic cars by the Classic Car Club of America.

In 1931, the 90-series cars sat on a 132-inch wheelbase (which would be enlarged in subsequent years), and they were powered by the new 344 cubic-inch engine with its long, five-inch piston stroke. This engine has tremendous, low-speed, lugging power,

making it unnecessary to actually start off in first gear, if you aren’t in any hurry.

Despite the economic depression, a surprising number of these 90series Buicks were sold in 1931, perhaps proving that many wealthy people were not affected by the economic conditions. An amazing eight different body styles were offered—the 96-C convertible coupe being introduced at mid-year. Here are the numbers:

look similar, but they are quite different (see the December 2020 Bugle, pages 2029, which compares the two years), so make sure the car is complete. Some parts are available, but only a couple of vendors advertise them occasionally.

The 344 engine was produced from 1931 through 1935, so some engine parts can be found if you really look, though they are not plentiful, and never were. Tune-up parts and other minor engine parts are available and reproduced. Be sure to check the condition of the exhaust manifold, as they are known to crack and can be very expensive to replace. Another fragile item is the electrical connections and switches at the bottom of the steering column, which can be very difficult to find in any condition.

The electrical wiring in these cars is not very complex, but it is fabric-covered, so check for bare wires. Wiring can be replaced and several vendors make wiring harnesses for these cars. In the closed cars, check the condition of the rubberized fabric roof insert.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN JUDGING ONE

The early 1931 models have olive green engines, while the later 1931s have black engines, so either color is correct. Convertible top colors in 1931 can be tan or brown.

The back window in a convertible top should be rectangular with rounded corners. Wood spoke wheels were standard equipment on all 1931 Buicks. Wire wheels (painted or chromed) and disc wheels were optional. The diameter is 18 inches on the 50-series and 19 inches on the larger series. Spare tires can be either rear-mounted or sidemounted on the front fenders. Dual rear-mounted spares are a rare option on any model. Up front, check to see that the crank hole cover is in place—they are sometimes missing. ♦

letters to the editor CLOSING OF THE MCLAUGHLIN BUICK CLUB OF CANADA Dear Friends: On September 30, 2021, the McLaughlin Buick Club of Canada will close after 50 years.

We will miss this wonderful club and the friends we made over the years. As we close, we have given all our members information about the BCA including application forms.

I would be remiss if I did not thank the many members of our club who served on our Board over the years. In fact, Mr. Wes Ebbs #6, served from day one and is still on the board. Over the 50 years, we had 70 different members on the Board. We had 4 members who served over 40 years, three serving over 30 years and five serving over 20 years. We had three of our American club members serve on our Board of Directors over the years, Joe Taubitz, Bob

I really enjoyed reading the stories on the 1941 Buicks (May 2021 issue), one of my favorite models! Reading the stories made me think about the day in 1959 while driving my 1934 Ford coupe home from work in Oakland, California. I saw a 1941 Roadmaster sport coupe pass me going in the way I had just come. I immediately made a U-turn and chased the car. When I got next to it, I could see the car was in excellent condition and the driver was an older gentleman—about my age now, 85. I got him to stop and asked if he would consider selling the car. “Follow me home,” he said.

When we reached his home (an apartment) he invited me in to meet his wife. Over a cup of coffee we discussed the possibility of my purchasing the Buick. They pulled out a large envelope full of pictures and information on the car. It seems they had taken a train from Oakland to Detroit to pick up the car in 1941. They shared their story bout the trip with me. I could tell they were reliving the train ride as well as the drive home. After much reminiscing, he looked at his wife and said, “You have been telling me I am too old to be driving. Do you think we should sell the car to this young man?” She immediately said “Yes!” and that was how I bought my first 1941 Buick. I loved the car and drove it for several more years.

My first Buick purchase was a real experience. I joined the Marine Corps in October of 1953 at 17 years of age (my dad had to sign for me). After I completed boot camp in December, I was sent to the Barstow, California Marine Corps Supply Depot, where I was assigned to work in the upholstery division. It was in April of 1954 that the Buick dealership was going out of business, closing its doors forever. They were holding an auction to dispose of their inventory. Two other fellow Marines joined me as we went into town. When we saw the big tent and sale going on, we decided to see what they had for sale. None of us had a car at that time. When I saw the red 1947 Super convertible, I was in love. I could not wait for the car to come on the block to bid on it!

Well, I bid all the money I had--$200 I believe. It was not enough to buy it. There were no other bids. I asked, “What's going to happen now?” One of the workers told me that it would come back

As President, I would like to thank the many members of the Buick Club of America who have supported us over the years by joining us on some of our tours and joining the club as members. Thanks to the Bugle editors over the years who published articles about our club activities.

Wendy and I personally have made lifelong friends in the MBCC and BCA and have been saddened when many of them died. As members of the BCA, in 2003, we created the Modified Division of the BCA. We thank Bob Starzyk for continuing with the modified judging. We were proud in 2012, when I was the only nonAmerican to be elected to the BCA Board. We were proud recipients of the Buick Heritage Award in 2019 for our over 30 years of work in the old car hobby especially with McLaughlin Buick.

May the BCA continue to grow and support its members.

Remember, Buicks were built to be driven.

When they returned they had the money we thought we needed to buy the car. We got the car on the next run through.

We shared the car for several months until I was able to buy them out. We made several trips to Las Vegas where, if we were in uniform playing the slots (pennies), we got free drinks. Weekends normally were a trip to Vegas! I always had a car full of Marines and filled the car with gas when I got there. If anyone won enough to buy supper, we ate; if not, we went back to the base hungry.

Later that year, I got a 30-day leave and made a trip to my

letters to the editor hometown, Aurora, Illinois. Barstow is on Rte. 66, and it was the only way to travel in those days. Three days later, I was in Aurora where I proudly showed off my Buick. When my leave came to an end, I drove back on Rte. 66 to Barstow—a wonderful, carefree ride both ways on Rte. 66. In 1955 I was transferred to Japan. I worked nights and weekends at Barstow Auto Wreckers, so it was only natural for me to cover the car with a tarp, parking in the back of the yard to await my return from Japan.

I sold the last two a couple of years ago—an '89 Reatta coupe and a '90 convertible. I loved them, but could no longer afford to keep them. When better cars were built, they were Buicks!

during the oil embargo. I don't recall the other name that was on the sign, only his name was there when I contacted them.

The dealership was noted for having the best wrecker service in New Mexico. They were the first called when a big rig was involved in an accident. The first time I called on the dealership, I noticed a very large rock sitting between the two uprights of the dealership sign. I asked Wes why it was there. It seems the large rock was being transported from a rock quarry through town when it fell off the transporter. It fell right in the middle of an intersection and no one had any idea how they would pick it back up, so it sat there for several years. One day Wes and his wrecker driver were talking and the subject came up, “Could our big wrecker pick that rock up?”

“Let's try it !” The big wrecker picked it up and took it back to the dealership.

"What are we going to do with it now?"

"Let's keep it on display so we can tell people we have a wrecker that can pick up heavy loads like that." They decided to place it between the two uprights of the dealership sign. When they placed it there it cracked the sign's foundation right in half.

Pete, Your article in the March Bugle about the Walker dealership (in Alamogordo, New Mexico) reminded me of a story Wes Walker told me. Wes Walker was the dealer when I called on Alamogordo

Wes said he was afraid to move it as the sign might fall down. I cannot see the rock in the Bugle picture, so I can not confirm if it's still there or not, but my guess is it still is!

The 2021 model year brings with it a clean sheet, second-generation Buick Envision. This model refresh is following the recent redesign of the Buick Encore GX--see my article “Bite Size Fun Test Driving the FirstEver Buick Encore GX” in the February 2021 issue. The new Envision offers beautiful styling, and a sporty, low and wide stance compared to the previous generation.

As in other models, in an attempt to attract the younger buyer, Buick now offers the Sport Touring (ST) trim package. The compact four-door crossover utility vehicle (CUV) market has become crowded with options, so how does Buick differentiate?

The Envision’s rear profile combines sporty looks and elegant styling and the 60-40 split seat folds flat increasing the cargo space to a maximum of 52.7 ft³ .

As buyers have come to expect from Buick, you have your choice of three trim levels – Preferred, Essence and the newly added ultraluxury Avenir trim. The test vehicle features the Essence trim and the Sport Touring (ST) package offering perforated-leather seating, active noise canceling, heated leather steering wheel and the Technology Package. The ST package offers customers black trim, unique badging, dark grille and mesh inserts and the eye catching 20” black wheels.

Under the hood, Buick has eliminated the 2.5L option available in 2020 and in its place is the new 2.0L ECOTEC offering a standard 228 horsepower across all trim levels and drive trains. From the driver’s seat, throttle response and acceleration will have you pleasantly surprised and questioning the observed 7.1 second 0-60 time. Engine noise is slightly louder than the other Buick models tested but still quieter than other brands in its class.

On the inside, the 2021 Envision features a brand-new cabin design, as well as an available 10-inch diagonal touchscreen, with connectivity from Apple CarPlay and Android Auto included. The included HD Surround Vision and Heads-Up Display offers complete situational awareness to the driver from the driver seat, a real treat as cars become more and more advanced. Cargo capacity comes in at 25.2 ft³ with the seats up and expands to 52.7 ft³ with the seats folded down.

For those looking to add a redesigned Buick Envision to your lineup, prices start at $31,800 for the Preferred trim. The well-

equipped ST tested is stickered at $41,315 and included just over $4,300 dollars in options. For those customers looking to add the “ST” package you can plan to add $1,325 to your price tag.

While the compact crossover market is crowded across the industry, Buick is taking the needed steps to re-Envision itself to attract buyers. When you combine the sleek and modern styling, available features and the attractive financing incentives, the 2021 Buick Envision is a solid buy for those looking for a great family touring vehicle. ♦
