QUICK SIX -Franklyn Quiteh enters Saturday’s game needing 180 yards to break the all-time BU and PSAC rushing record. He’s 137 yards away from moving into second place in the PSAC record books.

-Danny Fisher needs three field goals and eight kicking points to establish new PSAC records.

-Saturday marks Bloomsburg’s first trip to Edinboro since 2006 when the Huskies walked away from Sox Harrison Stadium with a 28-10 win.

-Bloomsburg had eight first time starters in the lineup last week vs. Stonehill.

-The Huskies have started 2-0 10 times since 1983.

-BU seeks to score 30 or more points in its first two games for the second straight year. It has not tallied 40 or more points in its first two games since 1926 when it defeated Freeland 44-0 and Lock Haven 41-6.

TODAY’S MATCHUP Bloomsburg will try to keep the momentum going after beating Stonehill in convincing fashion, 41-13 last Saturday at Redman Stadium.

Saturday has the potential to be a record-setting day - with both Franklyn Quiteh and Danny Fisher within striking distance of the PSAC rushing and kicking records respectively. Quiteh needs 180 yards to break the PSAC rushing record while Fisher has 48 field goals and 280 kicking points, chasing the conference records of 50 and 287 respectively.

Edinboro will look to keep its record unblemished as it opens its home schedule Saturday. The Fighting Scots came away victorious last Thursday night in a wild opener at Walsh, prevailing 35-34. The Fighting Scots seek a bounce back year after struggling to a 4-6 record a season ago, the first time Edinboro posted a losing record since the 2002 campaign.

THE HEAD COACHES The more things change, the more they stay the same might be the motto for the Huskies this fall. Although longtime head coach Danny Hale has retired, taking with him a 173-56-1 mark during his tenure with the Huskies, the faces on the sideline remain very familiar with the majority of Hale’s staff remaining in tact.

Paul Darragh takes over the role of interim head coach this season after serving 16 years on the Bloomsburg coaching staff as defensive coordinator. Under Darragh’s leadership, the Huskies’ defense has ranked in the top half of the PSAC in total defense in seven of the past 11 seasons. Darragh began his tenure 1-0 following last week’s win.

Edinboro head coach Scott Browning again leads the Fighting Scots as he enters his eighth season at the helm. Browning scored his 50th career win last week, moving his career record to 50-29. The Fighting Scots have shown tremendous consistency under Browning, recording winning records in each of his first six seasons including a 9-2 mark and an NCAA Playoff berth in 2009. That streak finally came to an end last year when the Boro finished 4-6.

Browning’s history with Edinboro dates well over two decades as he served as an assistant coach with the program from 1986 until his elevation in 2006.

LAST YEAR’S MEETING Bloomsburg scored a 30-14 triumph a year ago in what was the second game of the year for the Huskies, but the season-opener for Edinboro after the Fighting Scots had a bye in Week One. In the first meeting between schools since 2007, Bloomsburg dominated on the ground, out-rushing the Scots by a 319-104 margin.

Franklyn Quiteh out-rushed the Scots by himself by gaining 134 yards with a touchdown on the ground. The Huskies seized a 16-0 lead at halftime and never relinquished their control.

Edinboro quarterback Cody Harris finished the day 23-35 for 209 yards through the air but was sacked three times by the BU defense.

LAST TIME OUT Bloomsburg will seek to build upon an impressive opening week performance when it dropped Northeast 10 opponent Stonehill, 41-13 at home. The Huskies dominated nearly every statistical category, outrushing the Skyhawks 457-53 and led in total yards 642-198; first downs 28-12 and possession time 40:02-19:58.

The Fighting Scots’ opener at Walsh came down to the wire last Thursday night at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio, home of the NFL Hall of Fame. After leading 21-7 at half, the Scots seemingly had the game in hand with a 35-21 advantage late in the fourth quarter. Walsh drove 68 yards in 14 plays to cut the lead to 35-28 with 6:15 to play, and then a blocked field goal gave the hosts one last chance. Walsh went 90 yards in 2:32 to score on a 2-yard touchdown pass with eight seconds left, but instead of playing for overtime by kicking the extra point, the Cavaliers went for two. The two-point conversion attempt failed, allowing Edinboro to hold on for a 1-0 start to the year.

HUSKIES IN ELITE COMPANY Bloomsburg enters the 2013 season having won seven or more games in 14 consecutive seasons. Only five schools in the divisions of the NCAA have longer streaks: Florida, Florida State and Virginia Tech in the FBS; NW Missouri in Division II; and Mt. Union in Division III. The 14-year streak is also a PSAC record, breaking IUP’s mark of 13 set from 1984-1996.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION The Huskies’ jumped three spots to No. 15 in the Week One American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced Monday.

On Tuesday, the Huskies were ranked No. 13 in the latest edition of the D2Football. com national Top 25. The Huskies also began the season ranked in multiple other national polls. Lindy’s Football Annual tabbed BU at No. 10 in Division II while The Sporting News listed the Huskies at No. 17 in the country.

RACKING UP THE YARDAGE The Huskies had no trouble moving the ball in their 41-13 win over Stonehill last week, racking up 642 total yards of offense. That performance ranks among the top offensive outputs in PSAC history – the showing ties for 30th all-time in the PSAC record books

for team yardage gained in a single contest, tying Edinboro’s 642-yard output in 1994 vs. American International. The conference record for yards in a game belongs to California (PA), which put up 757 yards vs.

Mansfield in 2005. The most yards put up by a BU team in a single game is 685, which came in a game vs. Kutztown in 2010.

ANOTHER DAY AT THE OFFICE Franklyn Quiteh has been a model of consistency during his time in maroon and gold. The senior running back is on the cusp of setting the school and conference records for career rushing yardage due to his consistency – his 182-yard performance on the ground vs. Stonehill in the seasonopening victory on Sept. 7 marked the 33rd time Quiteh has surpassed 100 yards rushing. For his career entering the Edinboro game, Quiteh has rushed for 100 or more yards in 33 of his 36 games with the Huskies.

‘D’ STRONG VS. STONEHILL Much of the attention following the season-opening win over Stonehill centered around Bloomsburg’s offense, rushing for 457 yards and posting 642 total yards of offense. Defensively, the Huskies were just as sound. Bloomsburg limited Stonehill to just 198 yards of offense, the fewest yards allowed by the Huskies since giving up only 93 yards vs. Shippensburg on Oct. 16, 2010 – a span of 29 games.

GO WEST, YOUNG MAN Bloomsburg heads west for a PSAC crossover contest against Edinboro this Saturday. The Huskies have enjoyed a run of success vs. PSAC West foes, winning five straight crossover contests against West Division teams including victories over Edinboro, Gannon and Slippery Rock last season. Bloomsburg’s last loss to a PSAC West squad came in the 2010 NCAA Division II Playoffs at Mercyhurst.

CAREER DAY FOR MUNGER Redshirt sophomore Dai’Shon Munger steps into a larger role this season as the primary compliment to Franklyn Quiteh in the Huskies’ backfield. Munger made the most of his expanded opportunities against Stonehill, piling up new career highs in attempts (21) and rushing yards (135). His previous best day came against Millersville last season when he finished with 12 carries for 71 yards.

CHASING HISTORY

Senior running back Franklyn Quiteh has an opportunity to re-write the PSAC record books this season by setting the conference’s all-time record for most career rushing yards.

Quiteh enters this weekend’s game at Edinboro needing 180 yards to break the all-time BU and PSAC record of 5,689 rushing yards set by Jamar Brittingham during the 2007 season. At the start of Saturday’s game, he also stands 137 yards away from moving into second place in the PSAC rushing record books (Wesley Cates of California – 5,647).

Quiteh capped 2012 as a Harlon Hill finalist, finishing third in the final voting. He enjoyed his finest season last year, rushing for 2,121 yards while averaging a Division II-best 176.8 yards per game. Last year against Edinboro, Quiteh finished with 134 yards on 20 carries. He has run for over 100 yards in 18 straight games and 33 of 36 career games.

HUTTON SETS CAREER BESTS Senior wide receiver Glenn Hutton Jr. has stepped into a leadership role this year as the only wide out with starting experience on the roster entering the season. Hutton looked the part of veteran leader vs. Stonehill, tying a career-high in receptions (five) and setting a new personal best for receiving yards (124) while also hauling in a 56-yard touchdown pass from Tim Kelly. Hutton’s previous best day came last year vs. Millersville (five catches, 120 yards).

NOT BAD FOR A DEBUT Redshirt freshman Andrew Harris was a late addition to the starting lineup against Stonehill, but he looked like a veteran in his Huskies debut. Harris started at the will linebacker position and was around the ball all day – he led BU with eight tackles and also had a tackle for a 15-yard loss as well as a pass breakup. ...SPEAKING OF STRONG DEBUTS Another redshirt freshman, Joe Parsnik also made an impact in his first action with the Huskies. The Wilkes-Barre native rushed 12 times for 81 yards vs. Stonehill, including a rush of 17 yards. He averaged 6.8 yards per carry while spelling Franklyn Quiteh and Dai’Shon Munger.

CABRERA MAKES AN IMPACT Junior safety Tomas Cabrera is new to the Huskies, but isn’t without college experience. Cabrera comes to Bloomsburg after transferring from Division I Temple. At Temple, Cabrera played primarily on special teams. He was one of five true freshmen to see action for the Owls in 2010, forcing two fumbles, and also played in six games in 2011. Cabrera joined the Huskies this spring and immediately made a big play in his first game – a momentum-changing interception vs.

Stonehill. With the Skyhawks looking to tie or take the lead in Huskies territory late in the first quarter, Cabrera made a diving interception at his own 16 to end the threat. Bloomsburg would score a touchdown on its next possession and never relinquished control.

CONTINUING THE TRADITION While there is new leadership for the Huskies on the sidelines this season under interim head coach Paul Darragh, much has remained the same with the BU attack. Under former head coach Danny Hale, the Huskies made their name with a power running game. During

Darragh already has two 100-yard rushers as Franklyn Quiteh and Dai’Shon Munger both surpassed the total vs. Stonehill in Week One. NEXT MAN UP Bloomsburg entered the season looking for a solid full-time compliment to Franklyn Quiteh in the backfield. The Huskies may have found more than just one man to fill the role – along with Dai’Shon Munger’s 135 yards, Joe Parsnik also carried 12 times for 81 yards and fullback Matt Wenrich served as more than just a lead blocker, carrying six times for 30 yards and a touchdown in the win over Stonehill.

DII’S FINEST During preseason, D2Football.com unveiled its top 100 players in all of NCAA Division II. The Huskies were extremely well represented in that poll, placing three players in the top 11 and five in the top 100 – including taking the top spot. Senior running back Franklyn Quiteh earned the honor as the No. 1 player in the poll, being credited for his speed, vision and ability to break tackles. The two-time Harlon Hill finalist was joined by defensive end Larry Webster (No. 9), offensive guard Brian Clarke (No. 11), center Chris Steck (No. 94) and defensive tackle Chris Kennedy (No. 96).

When the D2Football.com preseason AllAmerica teams came out in August, the Huskies also had strong representation - Quiteh and Clarke were each first team selections while Steck and Webster landed on the second team.

THEY KEEP THE HOME FIRES BURNING

The 2013 season is the 40th in the history of Redman Stadium. In 2012 Bloomsburg was 5-0 at home, the 10th year the team has been undefeated. The Huskies all-time record in Redman Stadium is now 135-66-4.

IT ALL STARTS UP FRONT The strength of the Huskies for many years has stemmed from its running game.

Bloomsburg’s running prowess is made possible by its dominant offensive line. Last season, the Huskies ranked fifth in Division II rushing offense at 315.75 yards per game and set the single-season PSAC rushing record with 3,789 yards. The O-Line also surrendered just two sacks over the season’s final seven games, leading the PSAC and ranking seventh in Division II at 0.67 sacks allowed per game.

BLOOMSBURG FOOTBALL GAME NOTES All-PSAC East first team picks Brian Clarke, Matt Feiler and Chris Steck. Those three players have 88 starts among them during their Bloomsburg careers.

MR. ALL-AMERICAN Offensive tackle Brian Clarke has established himself as one of the top offensive linemen in the country over the past two seasons and recently earned a bit of national recognition.

Clarke earned a spot on this year’s preseason All-American list produced by The Sporting News.

ROSTER NOTES >The Huskies have 11 seniors on the roster.

Ten of those players are at least three-year participants in the program. >Eight of the Huskies’ projected starters on defense are in their junior or senior year of eligibility. >The outstanding senior trio on the offensive line of Brian Clarke, Matt Feiler and Chris Steck each started all 12 games a season ago. >The offensive line boasts the highest number of combined starts from last year between returning players (36) while the receiving core returns the fewest (six, all by Glenn Hutton Jr.) >Seven returning players started all 12 games last year (Brian Clarke, Matt Feiler, Chris Steck, Tim Kelly, Franklyn Quiteh, Chris Kennedy, David McFadden). Another four players (Justin Shirk, Tony David, D.J. Robinson, Jonathan Patrick) started all but one game in 2012.

WELCOME BACK A key reason for optimism around the Huskies this preseason stems from the amount of familiar faces around practice.

More than 40 letterwinners return from last year’s team, including 11 starters - five on offense and six on defense. The Huskies bring back seniors Brian Clarke, Matt Feiler and Chris Steck on the offensive line along with senior running back Franklyn Quiteh, redshirt sophomore quarterback Tim Kelly and senior wide receiver Glenn Hutton on offense. Defensively, junior Tony David and David McFadden along with senior Chris Kennedy return along the line as well as junior linebacker Justin Shirk and D.J. Robinson, a junior, and senior Jonathan Patrick in the secondary. Sacks leader Larry Webster also returns with one season of eligibility remaining. On special teams, kicker Danny Fisher also returns.

MAN OF MANY TALENTS Justin Shirk has found athletic success on more than just the football field - he won the 2012 NCAA Division II national championship in the javelin thrown with a toss of 235-11 feet or 71.90 meters. As such, he was selected by DailyRelay.com as part of its “Preseason Track Football Team,” honoring the top two-sport (football and track/field) stars in the country among all divisions. He was one of four linebackers selected along with Courtland Clavette (Brown), Jared Minori (Susquehanna) and Cody Britt (Bethel (MN)).

ONE-TWO PUNCH The Huskies enter the 2013 season looking for young players to step up to add depth at multiple positions on offense, in particular running back and wide receiver. In recent seasons of success, BU has been able to rely on a one-two punch at each skill position to balance the offensive attack. Last fall, the Huskies became the first team in PSAC history to have a pair of running backs rush for over 1,000 yards two straight years (2011-2012). While at receiver, Ryan Dickerson and Kyle Fisher gave the Huskies two threats on the outside.

This year, BU seeks a compliment to lead rusher Franklyn Quiteh. The most likely player to step into that role is redshirt sophomore Dai’Shon Munger.

Munger impressed in limited duty last year, averaging 6.3 yards per carry on 33 touches in his Huskies’ debut. Meanwhile, Bloomsburg returns only one wide receiver

to haul in a catch last year – senior Glenn Hutton Jr. NICE TO MEET YOU While second-year quarterback Tim Kelly has a season of experience under his belt, he will be throwing to a nearly entirely new group of receivers. Senior Glenn Hutton Jr. anchors the group after making 16 receptions for 240 yards and two TDs last year. Redshirt sophomore Connor Gades will get the call on the other side while fellow redshirt sophomore Trent Daniels brings size and speed to the outside. Junior Tony Peregrin has made strides through the spring and preseason workouts and will vie for time as well.

HE’S A VETERAN NOW Starting quarterback Tim Kelly starts the new season with the benefit of a full season of experience after winning the job last summer as a redshirt freshman.

Praised by the coaching staff for his ability to read defenses and make decisions on the fly, Kelly also brings mobility into the pocket, rushing for 211 yards a year ago.

BLOOMSBURG FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW Last year’s edition of the Huskies set the PSAC record for rushing yards in a season, finishing the year with 3,789 yards on the ground. That was good for an average of 315.75 yards of rushing per game, fifth-best in Division II. GROUND AND POUND The Huskies have had 30 or more rushing attempts in 38 straight contests, dating back to Oct. 31, 2009.

WHAT WILL HE DO FOR AN ENCORE? Defensive end Larry Webster made his Huskies football debut last year, but he looked every bit the veteran as he quickly became one of the PSAC’s best pass rushers. Webster ranked second in the PSAC in sacks with 13.5, trailing only Cal’s B.J. Stevens (14.5), and his 15.0 tackles for loss were good for fifth in the conference. Webster, who checks in at 6-foot-7 and 250 pounds, spent four years on the hardwood as part of the Huskies’ men’s basketball team. He was the 2011-12 PSAC East Defender of the Year and holds the all-time BU record for career blocks with 175. Webster picked up his first sack of 2013 against Stonehill in the season-opener.

SPECIAL K-ICKS This season, the field goals made by senior kicker Danny Fisher will mean a little more than just points on the board for the Huskies. Fisher, the school’s all-time leader in field goals, has created an initiative called “Kick for a Cure” to raise money for the Angelman Syndrome Foundation. For each field goal he kicks this season, Fisher will donate money donated by supporters of the cause to the ASF to go toward disease research and awareness.

Fisher developed the idea based on a close family friend battling Angelman syndrome, a neurogenetic disorder similar to autism that is caused by loss of function of a particular gene in the brain during fetal development. For more information on how to help, visit www.angelman.org.

FISHER NAMED TO MITCHELL WATCH LIST Danny Fisher also begins the season on the prestigious Fred Mitchell Award Watch List.

Fisher is one of 34 place-kickers across Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Division II, Division III, NAIA and NJCAA on the list after being nominated by their colleges for their excellence on the field and in the community. Top performers will be announced monthly with the Fred Mitchell Award winner announced in midDecember.

HUSKIES TO APPEAR ON NATIONAL TV Many eyes were already set to be on a key PSAC East battle between Bloomsburg and Shippensburg late this season, but now that game will also have the national spotlight. Bloomsburg’s game vs. Shippensburg at Redman Stadium on Halloween Night will air live on the CBS Sports Network at 8:00 p.m. The Huskies will be looking to avenge two losses vs. Ship last year.

By Bloomsburg University Archivist Bob Dunkelberger Bloomsburg has scored 20 or more points in 14 consecutive games, tied for the second longest streak in school history. The Huskies matched that mark in 2004-05 and set the record of 17 from 2000-01.

The 457 yards rushing on Saturday was the 13th time the team has had 400 or more in a game since 1996. It was the 5th highest over that period of time.

The 642 yards of total offense against Stonehill was the fourth most in a single game for the Huskies in the past 20 years. The only higher totals were 685 versus Kutztown in 2010, 660 at UC-Davis in 2000 and 648 versus Mansfield in 1996. This was the seventh time since 1993 a Bloomsburg team has amassed 600 or more yards in a single contest.

Bloomsburg’s all-time record against teams from out-of-state is now 41-32-2, with a 24-9-1 record at home and 17-23-1 on the road.

With his two field goals on Saturday, Dan Fisher has now kicked at least one in a school record 25 games. He had been tied with Jon Koenig, who had field goals in 24 games from 2006-09.

The upcoming game with Edinboro is the 10th in the series between the two schools. Bloomsburg’s record in the previous nine games is 3-6, 2-3 at home and 1-3 on the road.

Paul Darragh I N T E R I M

Paul Darragh was named interim head coach of Bloomsburg University in February 2013 and overall will be starting his 17th season with the Huskies this year.

Darragh has served as the Huskies’ defensive coordinator for the last 16 years. Under Darragh’s leadership the Huskies’ defense has ranked in the top-half of the PSAC in total defense seven of the past 11 seasons, including back-to-back second place finishes in 2000 and 2001 and a second place in 2009. The Huskies have also ranked among the best in the PSAC in run defense finishing first or second five times, including second in two of the last four seasons.

The 2009 Huskies finished third nationally in scoring defense (13.36/game), pacing the PSAC. BU also led the conference in sacks, ranking 14th nationally (3.09 per game). In 2010 the Huskies were eighth in Division II in rushing defense (85.38 yards per game).

Overall under Darragh’s leadership, the Bloomsburg defense finished in the top-15 in NCAA Division II six times since the 2000 season.

Darragh has also coached 51 first team All-PSAC performers, seven All-Americans and two PSAC East Defensive Players of the Year in Anthony Smith (2009) and Mike Varanavage (2010).

Prior to Bloomsburg, Darragh worked for two years at Indiana (PA) as the linebackers coach. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Temple from 1987-89.

From there, Darragh coached the linebackers at Northeastern and Gannon before being promoted to defensive coordinator at Gannon.

He moved from Gannon to the defensive coordinator post at William Paterson College before joining the IUP staff. A three-year starter and captain for Temple, he graduated in 1985 after earning All-East honors as an inside linebacker.
