t was a long cold winter, and spring didn’t seem to want to cooperate at first, either. But the moment the ground was dry and warm enough, area residents were out tilling the soil in their community garden plots. From the time the Shorewood community gardens opened in 2011, the plots have or nearly have sold out each year, said Karen James, the village’s Community Development Director.

James was the lead on the project four years ago when it first began; this year, she has turned the reins over to Denise Schmidt, Shorewood’s Recreation, Business and Special Events planner. “There seemed to be a need (for the gardens), and we had all that space,” said James. “It just made sense.”

Three parents of Troy School District 30C students spoke to the school board Wednesday evening about the reassignment of Crossroads Elementary School teacher Linda Kolacki, who teaches Project ACE (accelerated and enrichment program) classes.
