2018 in Cook County saw many changes and improvements, such as a Maine East theater teacher earning top honors and Oakton students who traveled to Puerto Rico to lend a hand. Here is a breakdown of some of the events shaped our community this past year.

Jewell of Niles West

Coming into 2018, former Niles West superstar Jewell Loyd had a full list of accolades already in her career. She tallied more than 3,000 points for the Wolves, as a senior at Notre Dame, she was the ACC Player of the Year as well as ESPN women’s college basketball player of the Year, she left the Irish after only three seasons, yet still walked away with 1,909 points in her college career, Notre Dame’s fifth-highest total ever. After departing the Fighting Irish, Loyd was the No. 1 overall selection of the 2015 WNBA draft by the Seattle Storm and was the Rookie of the Year that season and in 2016 was second team All-WNBA. That wasn’t enough for the 24-year-old. So, this season, Loyd added WNBA All-Star to her resume. The game, which used a draft system with captains Elena Delle Donnne and Naperville Central graduate Candace Parker selecting from the nominated players. Loyd was selected by Parker and joined former Joliet Catholic Academy graduate and Chicago Sky guard Allie Quigley on the team. She also played with former Notre Dame teammate Skylar Diggins-Smith and against current Storm teammates Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart, the WNBA’s leading scorer. In the game, Loyd tallied 12 points, helping Team Parker to a 119-112 win. This season, she is averaging 16 points per game for the Storm, who entered the All-Star break with a 19-7 record, the best in the league. “My teammates have been phenomenal. We are on a good ride – everyone is playing together, everyone is focused and it is just a good time right now,” Loyd said. “I have been in a little bit of a funk shooting wise, but I have never let that stop me from playing hard on the defensive end and rebounding.” Playing basketball isn’t all Loyd is up to these days, as she did some acting earlier this year. On May, 1, the 20th anniversary of Spike Lee’s classic sports movie, ‘He Got Game,” Bleacher Report released a trailer for the movie ‘She Got Game,’ where Loyd played Faith Mothershed showing what the iconic movie would look like with a female lead. “It is nuts. If you think about everything that has happened this year and all the people I have encountered,” Loyd said. “I

am just trying to be a light for people and give them as much encouragement and motivation as they need and they want. I am just trying to give back as much as possible.” That was apparent on July 18 when the Storm played at the Sky in the annual homecoming game for Loyd. All her fans from Niles West were on hand, including members of the coaching staff were on hand to watch her play and take some photos after – so many that arena security had to ask Loyd to leave the floor so they could clear the building.

Oakton students travel to Puerto Rico to lend a hand

Five students from Oakton Community College traveled to Puerto Rico last week. They joined a group of 11 people who helped restore a school hit by Hurricane Maria. The volunteer service trip was with the nonprofit Partnerships in Education and Service, and it ran from July 21 to July 28. The students — Jasmine Cetinbag, Samantha Heinz, Aishat Mohammed, Regina Rizal and Abdallah Simmons — spent most of those days at an elementary school in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. Surrounded by termites, ants, geckos and pigeons, they painted six rooms, wiped shelves, cleaned bulletin boards and carted in new desks. They also created a mural near the school’s commissary. “When the hurricane hit, the schools were closed,” Oakton Service Learning Coordinator Karen Roth said. “When the teachers returned, the paint was pretty peeled. The floors of the classrooms were pretty dirty.” Roth said this was the service learning program’s first trip outside the United States. At the school, which lacked air conditioning, they worked alongside teachers and even the school’s principal to get the building ready for classes. “I learned a lot,” said Jasmine Cetinbag, 21. “They didn’t expect much from us, but I felt like we could’ve done so much more. It was a low-income school to begin with, and the hurricane made it that much worse.” Some of the students were there to learn about the school system. Others got a chance to practice their Spanish. Roth said they plan to go back next summer. “They treated us like family,” Cetinbag said. “It was a great experience.”

St. John Brebeuf Church celebrates 65 years

When Rev. John J. Flanagan was appointed by Samuel Cardinal Stritch to form a new parish in Niles in 1953—the first Catholic Church in the rapidly expanding village—Father Flanagan chose St. John Brebeuf, one of the five Jesuit North American Martyrs, as the patron for the new parish. Before he was martyred, St. John Brebeuf translated a catechism from French into Huron, the first printed text in that language. He also compiled a dictionary of Huron words, emphasizing

translation of religious phrases from prayers and the Bible. In retrospect, it seems a prophetic choice as people of many language groups and ethnic backgrounds now worship at SJB. Back in 1953 Catholics who lived in Niles attended St. Paul of the Cross in Park Ridge or St. Juliana Church in Chicago. About 450 families formed the nucleus of the new parish, which was established on former farmland along Harlem Avenue. In August of that year construction began on a redwood and white pine structure which became known as the “Redwood Church,” on the northeast corner of Cleveland and Harlem and the first Mass was offered on Oct. 18, 1953. In 1954, construction began on a $400,000 combination school-convent-rectory. St. John Brebeuf School opened Sept. 15, 1955, with 420 children in first through eighth grade. By 1957, a “gymnasium” church and six more classrooms were added to accommodate the growing enrollment. Today, storage closets in the gym still display crosses on the doors of those closets that once served as confessionals. In 1963, the “Redwood Church” was razed to make way for another addition to SJB School where enrollment peaked in 1967 at 1,600 students. Meantime, in 1964 ground was broken for a spacious new sanctuary. Constructed from the “sky down, not from the ground up,” the building supports one of the largest clear span domes ever built on a church. An example of the design principle of “post-tension steel”— the tower and its upper structure, the stainless-steel cross above it, plus the entire weight of the ceiling push down on a point directly underneath the center of the church—this architectural, engineering and artistic feat won St. John Brebeuf Church both national and international recognition. Today, the church, school, and a parish center and offices have become landmarks along Harlem Avenue where cornfields once grew. Father Michael Meany, pastor, and Father Przemek Tomczyk and Father Peter Samborski, associate pastors, lead a flock of 3000 families. Mary C. Maloney, principal, heads SJB School where 266 children are enrolled.

Maine East theater teacher earns top honors

Each year the Illinois Theater Association recognizes a member of the association with the Award of Honor for their contributions to theater in Illinois, in particular to the Illinois Theater Association. This year, that award went to Maine East theater teacher Karen Hall. Hall has been a member of the association for 19 years and sat on the board for six years, and is very active in the Illinois High School Theater Festival and has directed the all-state musical. DAVE SAYS

Think about retirement after paying off debts DEAR DAVE, I’m on Baby Step 1 of your plan, and I work at a community college that takes a mandatory 20 percent from our pay for retirement. I know you say retirement contributions should be put on hold until all debt except for your home is paid off, so do you have any thoughts on this kind of system? It feels like it’s hard to get traction with getting control of my money when so much is being taken out of every paycheck. KRISTI DEAR KRISTI, That is a lot to take out. I’ve heard of a few places that have a mandatory 12 percent contribution, but 20 percent? That’s very unusual. And it’s unusually high. I’m not sure what to tell you. I mean, you took the job. It’s what you signed up for. But if it becomes enough of an issue with your finances, you may have to decide at some point if you still want to work there. My recommendation is to begin setting aside 15 percent of your income for retirement after you’ve paid off all debt except your home, and you have an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses in the bank. At least you’re not losing the money, so it’s not the end of the world. It’s your money that’s going in there for your use some day. I don’t know the exact structure of the retirement account, but it is going toward retirement savings of some kind—and that’s important! —DAVE Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. YEAR IN REVIEW - PART 2

SECOND

HALF

A look back at the second half of 2018 in Voyager Media sports

YOU’RE AN ALL STAR The road Mike Foltynewicz traveled to get where he is in Major League Baseball has not been the easiest, as he has had several set backs in his eight years. The Minooka High School graduate, who had all the scouts buzzing as a senior, did not have a smooth ride once he was drafted in 2010, but while he has faced adversity, Foltynewicz has always kept progressing and that hard work has paid off this season as he was named to the National League All Star team. He entered the game with a 7-5 record for the Atlanta Braves with a 2.66 ERA and 120 strikeouts. His 10.623 strikeouts per nine innings is 10th among all MLB pitchers. “As a program, we are super proud of Mike and personally, I just couldn’t be happier for Mike,” said Minooka head baseball coach Jeff Petrovic. “He has worked really hard, he is a great talent and a great person and it is nice to see great things happen to great people and someone I care about so much.” Foltynewicz, 26, had planned to pitch for the University of Texas after Minooka, but chose to forego college after he was drafted by the Houston Astros in the first round, 19th overall selection, of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft.

In 2012, Foltynewicz was the Astros Minor League Pitcher of the Year after going 14–4 with a 3.14 ERA and 125 strikeouts in 152 innings pitched. He made his MLB debut for the Astros on August 2, 2014 against the Toronto Blue Jays. HOT DOG For 20 years, Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville has hosted its patriotic themed Stars & Stripes golf tournament on the 4th of July. The event features patriotic costumed golfers, fireworks and entertainment on most holes all in the spirit of celebration for America’s birthday. This year, however, Mistwood wanted more. So the staff of Mistwood got together to brainstorm and outside of red, white and blue clad golfers and bombs bursting in air, there are few things that rival that in terms of celebrating Independence Day more than hot dogs. “In celebration of the 20year anniversary of Mistwood, we wanted to do something a little crazy,” said Jimmy Koklas, Food and Beverage Director at Mistwood Golf Club. “And we thought, July is national hot dog month, so why not go after a record that includes hot dogs. We Googled the Guinness Book of World Records hot dog

THURSDAY, JANUARY 3, 2019 | BUGLENEWSPAPERS.COM 2018 FROM PAGE 5 records and decided that we wanted to go after the longest line of cooked hot dogs, because logistically, we had the space on the golf course to do this.” More than 250 staff, volunteers and spectators showed up at the public golf course to help set the world record by lining up - and subsequently eating 2,496 hot dogs from tee to the green on the 3rd hole, a 556yard par 5. The nearly 1,800 uneaten hot dogs were donated to MoringStar Mission in Joliet. The new record of 1,162-feet, 11-inches clipped the old record of 1,157 feet, held by Nakakyushu Kubota of Japan. A GAME To look at Allie Quigley’s career over the last two years, it is hard to believe the former Joliet Catholic Academy and DePaul University standout almost walked away from the WNBA. But she did. After being drafted by Seattle with the 22nd pick in the 2008 draft, Quigley bounced around, playing in only 34 games total and was out of the league in 2012. She got the call to play for the Chicago Sky, which was a call that had it come with a different area code may not have gone the same way. “Chicago is my fifth team and when I got the call to come to Chicago, I only came because it is my hometown and it was one more shot,” Quigley said. “I was tired of doing the journey thing and I did lose confidence in myself. I had thought about giving it up, but those days are behind me.” Far behind. In her first season with the Sky, Quigley matched the number of games played in her en-

tire career to that point, and all she has done from there is go from winning the WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year award in 2014 and 2015 to becoming an All-Star the past two seasons. This year, Quigley was the Sky’s scoring leader, averaging 15.9 points per game. Quigley leads the WNBA in three-point percentage with all players averaging more than 3.5 attempts per game with a 43% clip and is second in the league with 2.3 triples made per game. She again showed off her shooting ability at halftime of the WNBA All-Star game in Minnesota where she won her second consecutive 3-point contest, this time setting the nets on fire with a final round score of 29 points – the highest total by a competitor in the WNBA or NBA in the history of the contest. With the win, she also earned a $10,000 donation to the Patrick Quigley Memorial Scholarship Fund, a fund honoring her late father that provides assistance each year to a student at JCA. MORE FOR MOORE In May, Plainfield North sophomore Marcellus Moore became the first Tiger to win an individual state track and field state title. In fact, he won two. Moore won the 100-meter dash with a state-record time of 10.31 seconds and claimed the title in the 200 with a time of 21.30. He also anchored the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams that claimed state titles, giving Moore four gold medals in the event. For his accomplishments, he was tabbed as the 2017-18 Gatorade Illinois Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the track, distinguishes Moore as Illinois’s best high school boys track and field athlete. “Honestly, I had no idea I was even in the running,” Moore said. “It was really all a big surprise when I found out I was a finalist. I woke up like seven in the morning and saw on Twitter that I was Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year, I jumped out of bed and went and showed my dad. I was thrilled.” Moore also paced Plainfield

North to a third-place finish in Class 3A. As a Gatorade Player of the Year, Moore was able to select a national or local youth sports organization to receive a $1,000 grant as part of the Gatorade Play It Forward program. Moore selected the Aurora Flyers Track Club as his beneficiary. He also completed a brief essay explaining why their selected organization deserves additional support in order to attempt to win an extra $10,000 spotlight grant for the Flyers. “I chose the Aurora Flyer Track Club because the organization has done so much for me and has played a huge role in getting me where I am today,” Moore said. “I wanted to give back.” SLAMMERS The Joliet Slammers are Frontier League Champions after taking game five from Washington by a score of 4-2. Washington jumped on the scoreboard early with a run in the first, but the Slammers quickly scored two in the top of the second on a triple by Trenton Hill and single by Chaz Meadows. London Lindley and Danny Zardon would score 2 more runs for the Slammers in the top of the third. Cody Clark was named the Frontier League Championship Series MVP. RECORD YEAR Maine South is not known as a swimming school, but that will change if Annika Wagner has anything to say about it. Wagner’s performance Saturday at the state finals at Evanston spoke volumes about how good she is. The junior staked her claim to being one of the top swimmers in the state, if not the best, by winning the 200-yard individual medley in a state-record 2:00.13 and taking second in the 500 freestyle in 4:48.53. Wagner is the fifth female swimmer in Maine South history to win a state championship but the first to do so since Courtney Madsen won the 50 and 100 free in 1984. In other results, Maine South’s 400 free relay team of senior Amna Sorbun, Wagner, junior Natalie Waida and senior Margaret Edsey finished 22nd in Friday’s prelims in 3:36.22. Junior divers Riley Bond and Bronwyn Bond placed 29th and 30th with 172.90 points and 172.65 points, respectively.

Morton Grove’s St. Martha Catholic Parish Celebrates 100-Year Anniversary

St. Martha Catholic Church isn’t quite the oldest church in Morton Grove. But there aren’t that many churches in the village – or the nearby suburbs – that can say they have been around for a century. On Sept. 30, the church held a block party to celebrate the occasion. Fr. Dennis O’Neill, who has been leading the parish for the past 18 years, noted that Morton Grove has changed a great deal since St. Martha first opened, and he liked to think that his church did its part to make the village a better place. And while the church’s long-term future is uncertain. O’Neill said that he is proud of the fact that St. Martha continues to be a close-knit, diverse community that welcomes everyone. St. Martha Catholic Church first opened its doors in 1919. It was founded by German-speaking immigrants from Luxemburg. O’Neill said that, around that time, the Prohibition took effect, and the church’s first space was actually a recently closed tavern across the street from the Morton Grove Public Library. In the 100 year since, O’Neill said, the village changed a great deal – pointing that, in its July 2007 issue, the Family Circle Magazine included Morton Grove as one of the top ten places to raise families. For much of its history, the church slowly but surely expanded. It moved from a former tavern to a freshly built, more traditional church. In 1949, it opened a parish school. St. Martha used to have a Boy Scouts troop – Troop 84. The last three decades saw Morton Grove become increasingly diverse, and St. Martha Catholic Church has always reflected it. O’Neill said that, when he first arrived at the church, he could count 28 ethnic groups in his congregation – and the number has only grown since. That included ethnic groups from all over Europe, Central and South Americans, the Indian subcontinent, as well as from South Korea and Philippines. In recent years, religious persecutions in Iran brought Chaldians and Assyrians to Morton Grove – and, while O’Neill said many of them worship at their own churches, they worship in St. Martha as well.
