ROCKWOOD INTRODUCES Non-Traditional Learning Program

Since last April, Rockwood’s Alternative Education Committee has been meeting to evaluate alternative programming and educational opportunities for students in Rockwood.

Using inputs from parents, staff and students, they have decided to change alternative education to become Pathways.

Pathways is a non-taditional learning program that aims to provide additional opportunities for both students that are succeeding in high school and extra support for students who may be struggling in the traditional learning environment. The options that Rockwood will offer range from entrepreneurial internships to group therapy sessions.

“A large part of what we are trying to focus on is students that are struggling with anything, and it could be anything on a spectrum, from lots of moves that have set them back academically to homelessness, poverty, anxiety or traumatic experiences,” Director of Non-Traditional Learning Todd Minichiello said.

Pathways is made up of four different parts: the discipline center, the

Missouri Option Center, and the new Student Restore Program and Wellness Center.

“The Wellness Center is going to be a space for any kid in the Rockwood School District,” Executive Director of Student Services Dr. Terry Harris said. “It’s for any kid that may be struggling with anything that impedes their ability to access their education.”

The Student Restore Program (SRP), which will be located in each of Rockwood’s four traditional high schools, will provide support for students who are not ready to go to the Wellness Center.

“The goal is to never have any student leave our Rockwood footprint to receive mental, social and emotional support,” Dr. Harris said. “Students will still have their academic support, but the major focus will be on whatever the barrier is from accessing school.”

Each student that chooses Pathways will have an individualized learning plan. One student may have an academic lab for first hour while another has a meeting with a thera-

“Block two could be PE for one student and seeing a therapist for another. Block four could easily be going home for one student, since they’re only there for half a day, or going to a work study for another because they have a job somewhere or they’re doing an internship,” Dr. Harris said.

According to Minichiello, one of the most major changes from alternative education to non-traditional learning is the mindset around it.

“Our choice programs and our alternative school programs used to be a destination that kids never left,” Minichiello said. “Kids wound up there who didn’t want to go, and once they went there, no one ever heard from them again. What we’re trying to do is change that. I would love it if every student took a semester of a choice program and that it wouldn’t have any negative connotations because everybody’s doing it.”

Non-traditional learning through Pathways will be an option for all high school and middle school students beginning in Aug. of the 2022-23 school year.

As COVID-19 continues, the Rockwood School District has faced many challenges throughout the last two years. Another obstacle has recently come to light regarding the lack of substitute teachers able to fill in.

“It definitely created more work, fast thinking--first thing in the morning too,” secretary Diana Miller said.

“However, I soon discovered those that could help in the building. And there were many who stepped up. It just required a lot of phone calls and emails--trying to get classes covered before the first class.”

Some teachers also get anxious when they need to miss school.

“It has made me really apprehensive to miss school because I am afraid there will not be a sub to cover my classes and my coworkers will be inconvenienced,” history teacher Annie Schoessel said.

Other teachers have already had to deal with these difficult obstacles.

“I have been out since February 14 with COVID and related complications,” orchestra teacher Mary White said. “During that time, four of the days went unfilled. Thankfully we have an in-building sub, Ms. Wills, who has covered some of the days and a hall monitor, Mrs. Bell, who is always willing to step in when she is available.

It’s hard to write lesson plans when you don’t know if someone will be there to cover you.”

However, some substitute teachers have been committed to filling in as much as they can.

“There are a few ‘regulars’ that many teachers prefer to use if they are available,” Schoessel said. “I have reached out to them ahead of a known upcoming absence to ensure they are available.”

Unfortunately, some departments have a harder time finding substitutes that are comfortable teaching lessons.

“There are very few subs that are comfortable or willing to teach music classes, so I have to put the job out and hope someone picks it up,” White said. “I have two people that I know will sub for music classes, but they are in high-demand and it’s luck of the draw, whoever gets to them first.”

Luckily, there are a few solutions

that make finding substitute teachers easier for all.

“The best avenue is to get it entered into the system, WillSub,” Miller said.

“The system then sends out the opening to all teachers who have marked EHS as one of their preferred schools.

The system works quite well, faster than me calling anyone.”

Although WillSub has been very helpful for teachers, sometimes positions go unfilled.

Some teachers have even had substitute teachers not show up for a period of time.

“This school year I was leaving school early and a sub was to show up for my afternoon classes,” Schoessel said. “The day before my absence, I gave my sub plans and instructions to a student in my AP class, so they would know what to do. I joked that it was in case a sub didn’t show up. It turns out, a sub didn’t show up for 45 minutes. Thankfully, it was an AP Class so the students just did what they were supposed to.”

In case of difficulties surrounding substitutes, there is always a back up plan.

“I just look at the availability of the subs I already have in the building,” Miller said. “A sub is a sub all day, they have no reason to be given a plan period--so I pull subs from plan periods

to cover the missing or unfilled class-plus I have the hall monitors.”

Schoessel feels like these circumstances really need to be a priority for the district.

“I feel like the district really needs to focus on this issue,” Schoessel said.

“It shouldn’t be so hard for teachers to get coverage for their classes. At times, administrators in our building have needed to cover classes. Maybe a pay raise is needed for Rockwood Substitutes?”

Throughout this frustrating time, many people have been able to step up in this time of need.

“I am very grateful to have excellent teacher aides in many of my classes, upperclassmen who can take over the class and continue the learning,” White said. “It is frustrating, though, because they aren’t teachers and giving them that responsibility constantly adds stress and work to their already overloaded lives. I’m also incredibly blessed to have students that take orchestra because they want to learn and they will continue to practice and make progress when I cannot be with them. I’d like to see our school district increase pay for subs to entice more and qualified candidates to do this important job.” photo and illustration by Ali Pate

Parks department wants revamped Lions Park, potential for more development with record donation The City of Eureka is looking to revamp Lions and Legions’ Park.

In the past, smaller projects have been completed, at Lions Park, the playground, concession stands, and restrooms have all been revamped in the past ten years. Legions park has also recently gotten an entirely new playground along with slight renovations to the Community Center, due to flood damage in the past five years.

After hiring Navigate Building Solutions, Eureka told NBS to look at all facilities including parks to see where improvements could be made.

Lions Park and Legion Park were recently brought to the attention of the City of Eureka and the city is now accepting feedback from residents as to what they think should be added or changed. “There have been some really good suggestions like adding electricity to pitching mounds rather than running a cord from the pitching machine to electricity located outside of the diamond and eliminating the proposed scoreboards since most teams now use apps to communicate scores. We have also received a lot of positive feedback on adding connector trails within the parks and improving parking and crosswalks,” Julie Wood, the Director of Economic Development and Communication for the city of Eureka, said.

This may raise concern for people living around the park because of construction but Wood emphasizes that the city plans to move forward with this project soon.

“The City will make sure that once the plan starts to move forward we do our best to limit the impact from construction and communicate to the neighboring homes,” Wood said.

To fund the construction at the parks the city will be using the general fund, which is the amount

of money a certain department of the city gets to spend. The city is also looking into grant funding (money from the government to provide public services). This will only work for projects that qualify so Eureka can’t fully rely on it to help pay for the park renovations. Along with grant funding there is a Parks and Storm Water Tax that can only be used for projects that deal with parks, and areas affected by flooding. For 2021-2022 the City of Eureka has $3,719,192 to spend on improvement program projects, but for this specific project a real budget hasn’t been set.

Thanks to Ruprecht Building Materials Company, the city of Eureka received its largest land donation ever, appraised at 2.6 million dollars.

“The City acquired 10 acres adjoining this property two years ago, and we believe this may be a great area

for fields and more organized sports activities in the future. We anticipate that kids may be able to participate in organized sports activities on the existing 10 acres, while at the same time their parents are able to walk or ride nature trails along the Meramec River and near lakes on the neighboring 201 acres. This would be somewhat similar to the uses at Creve Coeur Park, although in a much more natural setting,” Sean Flower, Mayor of Eureka, said.

The city states that the land is only to be used as a park to preserve the natural environment. Eureka also plans to add in a flood wall in Flat Creek, which will help with flooding mitigation.

These additions to Lions and Legions Park will greatly benefit the city of Eureka.

IS “THAT GIRL”Attainable?

If your TikTok For You Page is anything like mine, you’ve likely seen videos that preach the “That Girl” aesthetic, often including daily routines with a list of 12 things to do before it’s even 8 a.m. You should workout, cook a nutritious breakfast, shower, read, journal, get coffee, etc. It has a strong appeal because it’s an attitude most people want to embody, but for this to be realistic you’d have to get up at 5 a.m., which means about four or five hours of sleep for most high schoolers. This aesthetic alludes to a false truth that to be the best version of yourself you have to be constantly productive doing ‘healthy’ things, but this mindset in itself is unhealthy and ultimately unrealistic to its target audience: young women.

The “That Girl” aesthetic has emerged within the last couple of months, primarily on TikTok. It promotes exercise, healthy eating, productivity in work or school and self improvement with journaling or meditation. While these are good qualities to incorporate into your life, videos with this aesthetic often don’t include time for rest or mental health days, and suggest that your worth is correlated to how well you follow this idealized routine. If you don’t follow it, you’re not “That Girl.” It utilizes subtle pressure to be extremely persuasive, to an audience that is more likely to face insecurities.

The first problem with the “That Girl” aesthetic is that when viewing these videos, you only see the content that the creators post. It’s not a complete picture of their life.

Most likely, the creator is not living this aesthetic everyday, and they even sometimes incorporate these lifestyle changes in order to have content to post and to increase views, not because they want to persuade their audience to make healthier lifestyle choices. Another motivation of posting is validation from the Internet for living such an aesthetic life. Whether it’s one of these motivations or a combination of them, these posts are only the highlights of the creators lives and because they don’t post the reality of “off days” or the importance of taking breaks, it puts pressure on the viewer to constantly live this life that as a high schooler is impossible to maintain.

Another barrier to achieving the “That Girl” aesthetic is a financial one.

Whether it’s preaching the necessary skin care, food or clothes to have in order to fit this aesthetic, almost all these videos share a common prerequisite, money. This narrows the accessibility of this aesthetic to those who are financially secure, which isolates a majority of watchers, high schoolers who don’t have the availability to work or are limited to minimum wage jobs.

As a result, the “That Girl” aesthetic divides viewers and because it has the inherent message that living a routine filled with skin care, exercise, and healthy food is necessary to achieve the “That Girl” status, for those who can’t afford the aesthetic it

suggests they are not as valuable as those who can.

However, the biggest barrier is time. High school students live extremely busy lives, from homework, to extracurricular activities, to jobs.

A majority of teenagers have limited free time, and often use that time in order for needed rest or to connect with friends and family. It’s important to take time out of your day for self care, but this aesthetic doesn’t advocate for realistic amounts and time spent on self-care. It pressures students to make more time for “healthy” activities, while sacrificing rest and recovery time, which are imperative for both physical and mental health, to do so.

Every person has different physical and mental needs, and one definition of healthy isn’t applicable to all.

There is no definitive way to achieve a healthy lifestyle, but the “That Girl” aesthetic puts unneeded pressure on people to always be at their best. To follow it excessively is not only damaging to mental health and unrealistic, but is also unattainable because it thrives on one key component that contradicts who we are as people: constant perfection. So, incorporate a new workout routine into your life, try a new food or practice a grounding technique, but don’t do these things in order to feel like a more valuable or better version of yourself.

You don’t have to strive to be “That Girl”, it’s enough to just be yourself.

First dates are nerve-wracking. Sometimes they’re even scary to some degree. There are several unpleasant things that people may experience; here are the top 10 worst things to do on a first date.

10. Cussing too much

Cussing may be a part of some students’ vocabulary, yet saying the f-word in every sentence is a bit excessive. Some students may even find it offensive. Maybe toning it back would be a good idea. Wait until both people are more comfortable before speaking like a pirate.

9. Being too touchy

Before becoming touchy with a person, learn boundaries. Truly get to know the person before being all over them. It could be very uncomfortable. illustration

8. Saying I love you

Really? It is extremely rare to fall head over heels, being completely infatuated with someone after a single date. Save that for when the feelings are genuine. Plus, it can easily scare off people. In all honesty, it’s a little creepy to confess your love to someone you barely know.

7. Pretending to be someone you’re not

A person should be themselves. Never fake the personality or else it will backfire. Plus, trying to maintain a certain persona would get exhausting. Not to mention, it isn’t genuine. Stay true to who you are, please!

6. Complaining

I promise, nobody cares. Keep the complaints to a minimum. Too bad, so sad, if something minor doesn’t go exactly in your favor. Cope with it. Oversharing is also common among some teenagers which could make a date take an awful turn for the worse.

5. Being rude to the waiter/waitress

That just shows basic disrespect. Being rude to anyone without reason is a red flag in itself, especially the person serving you. You better hope they don’t spit in your food. If this is some form of showing off, it’s not cute or cool. It’s very impolite and it demonstrates ill manners.

4. Showing up late

There better be a valid excuse for this or else there won’t be a second date. It’s honestly just disrespectful to your date if you just leave them there waiting on you for no good reason. There are some acceptable possibilities such as car troubles or traffic, but just poor time management is plainly rude.

3. Playing on your phone while on the date

Social media and technology related items are addicting, but you know it’s bad when your date can’t even focus on you because they’re too busy sending ceiling pictures to random people on Snapchat. This is a huge pet peeve; why go out to dinner with someone if you’re just going to ignore them and play on your phone? You can scroll mindlessly through TikTok or play Clash of Clans when you get home.

2. Talking about exes

This is a huge no-no. It is awkward to bring this up especially when the ex has no relevance to the conversation. If an ex is even mentioned in a conversation on the first date, that’s questionable. Have you truly moved on if you’re still talking badly on that person? It’s genuinely unnecessary.

No. People should date each other to see if there’s a connection. It’s about getting to know the other person, not what the person has to physically offer. If all you want is something physical, make it clear. Refrain from leading people on just because you want some action. Use your words and don’t use people!

Despite offering students lockers at Eureka High School, there is a very limited number of students who even know their locker number and combination, and even fewer actually use their lockers. So the question stands-- do we even need lockers in our building?

“We can’t use them. It was to keep people out of the halls during COVID, but now that masks are off, it seems like COVID isn’t really a factor anymore,” Logan Biggs, 10, said.

“The hallways are pretty bad.

There’s no flow of traffic in the hallways. It’s all packed in there, and the hallways are too small.”

If the lockers were removed, that would leave extra space for better student flow, therefore decreasing the amount of students either late or slowed down by the mass of students.

“I carry everything in my backpack. It would be just another step I’d have to take while I’m trying to go to class,” Emmett Beeson, 9, said. “When you’re trying to go to class, there’s a big rush of people trying to go in and out, and then you’re just trying to get in the middle of that. There’s not really room.”

Not only are lockers inconveniently placed, but there isn’t another ideal place throughout Eureka High School to put lockers that are easily accessible to students. Most students find that keeping all of their supplies inside of their bags is more useful than any locker.

South Tech, an educational facility located in Sunset Hills, provides students at Eureka as well as neighboring schools with an education to prepare them more in depth for the workforce.

This facility allows students to explore their interests and also helps guide them towards their future careers or further education. In order to attend South Tech there is an application process and review to see if the student applying would be a good fit for the program.

Once accepted, students have the option to choose to be in one of 24 different programs offered at South Tech. Some common programs students decide to be a part of are Dental Science’s, Culinary Arts, Early Childhood Education, Design & Entrepreneurship and Firefighting & EMT. Most students at Eureka attend South Tech on half day schedules where they are able to attend their home school as well. South Tech is also a great way to meet new people from neighboring schools.

South Tech also has a financial benefit for some students.

“I went to South Tech honestly because it seemed really fun and something that not a lot of people were doing. I would recommend South Tech

“I went to South Tech because I was into automotive and they had automotive technology. I would recommend South Tech if you are a hands-on learner. We do a lot of hands-on activities and rarely anything on paper. Also, we get a lot of mechanical certifications, we get to take required courses to get them out of the way, and even opportunities for internships in the last quarter. Another cool thing is companies or businesses come into my class to talk to us,” Ethan Riesig, 11, said.

South Tech has so many opportunities and programs to participate in and you will find that a lot of students get involved in many different things.

“I’m involved in the law enforcement program and I love it. I would totally recommend it because it really prepares you for life after high school, you meet new people, class sizes are really small, which helps with learning, and lastly everyone in the class becomes like your family and you feel really comfortable,” Sidney Goetz, 11, said.

Students choose to leave high school a semester early to work and save money Graduating early has been a hot topic amongst teens and parents alike on whether or not it is beneficial to seniors. Eureka High School offers opportunities to graduate early to students who have all their credits completed by first semester. Most students that have already graduated early are spending their time working and saving money for college.

Lauren Wolf, 12, wanted to move out as soon as possible.

“Right now I am just focusing on work, I am trying to save up as much as possible for when I go to community college in the fall,” Wolf said.

Wolf really enjoys her free time so she can do the things she loves.

“I work out almost everyday, practice my trumpet, teach myself guitar, and I hang out with my other grad friends.” Wolf said.

Wolf’s plan after high school is to go to Saint Louis Community College in the fall using the A+ program and then go into some sort of police academy or the Navy.

“Although I do miss the fun parts of high school and all of my teacher friends, I think graduating early was one of the best choices I’ve ever made. It’s so much fun and stress free,” Wolf said.

Kenzie Sanders, 12, graduated early to get school over with and to work more and save more money for the future. Sanders is focusing on working until she starts college in the fall.

“In my free time I have been starting to read more.

It is a lot more enjoyable when I do it on my own time instead of for school,’’ Sanders said.

Sanders also enjoys spending time with her grandpar-

ents like running errands for them or doing other things to help the. Despite enjoying the free time, Sanders still misses seeing her friends and teachers everyday. Sanders’ plans for the future is college.

“I want to continue working then go to college in the fall and get my bachelors degree,” Sanders said.

Donna Martinez, 12, wanted some time to think about the future and to have some extra time to work and save money for college. She finds it very important to focus on herself and her mental health during her free time.

“I am really focusing on my mental health and just relaxing and not having to stress about so much school work,” Martinez said.

Going to the gym and working keeps

Martinez busy throughout the week.

She enjoys the time she has to spend with friends and family. In the future, Martinez wants to relax until it’s time for college in the fall. ”I am just planning on taking this semester off and starting college in the fall at Saint Louis Community College to be a nurse,” Martinez said.

Early graduation provides many teens with the opportunity to work and save money for college. This also allows for preparation for adult life.

Lights, camera, action! Eureka High School’s theater club, etc…, recently finished their spring production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, a Shakespearean romance and comedy.

The tech, crew and actors all play various different roles in making both the play and behind-the-scenes process run smoothly.

“This production follows three different groups, the lovers, the fairies, and rude mechanics, as they all have conflicts that take place in the same woods. Every role has its own unique plot line that’s intertwined into the story or with other characters. It’s a very comical production full of magic,” Maren Burns, 9, said.

Director Justin Scheuer, shared how unique this Shakespearean masterpiece is in comparison with other plays performed at Eureka High School.

“This is a play within a play,” Scheuer said.

Avery Bengston, 9, debuts in the spring play as Puck, one of the prominent roles. Her character’s personality causes trouble within the play.

“This play is about four lovers who run to the forest, the mischievous fairy, Puck, mistakenly ending up causing both guys to fall in love with one girl,” Bengston said.

The process of choosing a play perfect for etc… is lengthy and takes many things into consideration.

“Last year, I was thinking about our casting pool and I wanted to do Shakespeare, but also I thought we had the right actors and tech to be able to do this,” Scheuer said.

Scheuer chose to shorten the production into a two hour production by shortening lines and cutting out monologues. Despite shortening the play, all the scenes from the original play were kept in and no scenes were cut.

Much goes into a play between learning roles, embracing the roles, the tech, the lights and costumes. The most important part is when the entire production all comes together and problem solves to get the play show night ready.

Preparing for a production can be stressful, but both cast and crew have their own ways to manage anxiety.

Bengston handles stress by staying busy and keeping her energy up.

“I always get super excited and nervous, but I remind myself of how much I love what I’m doing. I give myself a little mantra right before I step on stage, and of course doing warmups like energy and shaking down with the whole cast before a

performance is super fun and gets me excited,” Bengston said.

Sarah Grossman, 9, runs as lead of the sound crew but has a creative way to manage opening night stress.

“Opening night is always the most stressful, but eventually, I calm down by treating it like another dress rehearsal,” Grossman said.

Maren Burns, 9, the actress portraying Helena, explained how she chases after success through de-stressing.

“Before a show, I’m usually pretty nervous but in an exciting way, and it all settles down as soon as the curtain opens because I know my only job is to perform and have fun,” Burns said.

Burns further elaborates how her character’s dynamic personality causes trouble within the show.

Bengston connected with her character, bringing her to life on the stage.

“The mischievous fairy, Puck, mistakenly ends up causing both guys to fall in love with one girl. Puck is also helping her master, Oberon, play a trick on the fairy queen, Titania,” Bengston said. “My favorite part is my monologue at the end, where I get to close the show and I just enjoy getting to interact with all the other characters on stage.”

The Class 6 State Football Championship: Christian Brothers College vs Liberty North. A private school vs. a public school. CBC won against Liberty 48-21. In Liberty’s school history, this was their only state appearance, in comparison, CBC has had seven state appearances since 2006. Why is it fair that a school that is beyond better because of unfair advantages can play a school who has never had a state appearance?

So the question lies here. Is it fair that private schools play public schools?

It’s a debate that’s been growing in conversation for the past few years, even decades. When a private school wins a state championship, it raises questions on whether they have an unfair advantage against public schools, just like recently with the Class 6 State Championship.

Private schools recruit kids, so why is it fair for these kids to play public school athletes?

In a private school, students can come from anywhere.

Ohio University has been studying the private vs. public school divide and declared the athletic director plays a major role in making the program as attractive as they can to applicants.

In comparison, public high schools are focal points in their communities as athletics support the accomplishments of local young people.

Being a student athlete of a private high school comes with benefits such as opportunities to work with higher-level athletes and coaches, increased exposure for college recruiting, and powerful alumni networks, along with nicer facilities.

MSHSAA had a step in the right direction in September 2020, as they announced they will use a Championship Factor for 2020-2021 school year.

Before then, MSHSAA used a private school’s raw enrollment and multiplied it by 1.35 to place the school into a class. Now they use a point system that consists of the six years of postseason data prior to 2020.

The point system looks like this: If

the team is district champions, they get 1 point. If they place 3rd/4th at state, they get 2 points. Places 2nd at state = 3, and if the team wins state, they receive 4 points.

Based on these points, it’ll declare schools their class assignments. If a team has 0-2 points: they will remain classified based on raw enrollment.

3-7 points: They will be reclassified one class above on raw enrollment.

And if they have 8+ points: They will be re-classified two classes above on raw enrollment.

Even though MSHSAA has tried to make an equal level playing field, private schools are at an unbelievably greater advantage. This solution didn’t help and the problems remain unsolved.

As of now, three southern states have made the change for their high school sports associations. Louisiana, Tennessee, and Virginia now all have separate championships for private and public schools.

In these states, private and public schools can play against each other in the regular season but not in the postseason.

MSHSAA should change to this. How was it fair for our basketball team to play CBC, a team who brought in a player from South Sudan who’s ranked No. 25 nationally in his class, in the district championship? Our solution should be having a public school champion and a private school champion in each sport.

Golf has long been a quiet sport and tradition. After recent years, should the course turn into a “Happy Gilmore” Environment?

The Waste Management Phoenix Open has set itself apart from other events on the PGA Tour, as an event where the environment isn’t the same as a normal tournament. The event is played annually at TPC Scottsdale in Arizona. The tournament features a hole where fans can do and say whatever they want. The par 3 16th, nicknamed “The Colosseum”, measures 162 yards, and is enclosed by a grandstand seating nearly 20,000 spectators.

The event has raised an interesting question for the golf industry, “should golf be a loud sport?”

“I think it definitely has its room in the game, but I don’t think it should always be loud,” varsity golfer Logan Forister, 11, said. “One hole a tournament is enough.”

At first, it seems outrageous to make golf a loud sport because most golfers struggle to focus in a loud environment. It takes a lot of focus to win a professional golf tournament, and many professionals would struggle mentally in a consistently loud environment, but some golfers think it

would be fun to play in a loud environment.

“It would definitely take some time to get used to at first, but once you adapt to it I feel like it would be a lot of fun and it would make me a better player,” varsity golfer Jack Lematty, 10, said.

Golf revolves around the mental side of the game. Without being strong mentally, it is impossible to perform in a pressure situation. Because of this, most people wouldn’t like playing golf in a loud environment, as they would struggle to focus and perform.

In professional golf tournaments, the loud environment makes the event much more enjoyable for the fans.

“It would bring more viewers to a sport that doesn’t have very many people who watch it, and it would create more entertainment,” Lematty said.

The Phoenix Open is a one of a kind event, but the actions of some fans at the tournament have some consequences. After a hole in one at the event, everyone in the grandstands throws their drink onto the green.

Although this can be fun initially, these actions amount to thousands of cans on the course, and it takes a very long time to clean them up.

In the most recent tournament last month, two hole in-ones were made.

After the first hole out, it took more than 20 minutes to clean all of the cans off the course. This doesn’t seem like that big of a deal, but players had to wait on the tee box until the cans were gone, and it caused a short delay for every other group on the course because they had to wait on the group in front of them.

After playing in the Phoenix Open, professional golfer Brooks Koepka said it was nice to feel like he was playing a real sport after playing in a loud environment. Forister agreed with this comment.

“I think it’s something that every sport has besides golf, or most sports have besides golf, and it creates more pull to golf and more fans,” Forister said.

Overall, a loud environment in golf can be a good thing, but it should be condensed to only occur in a few tournaments, and draw more fans to those particular tournaments.

MENCHELLA LANDS IN Lindenwood Hall of Fame

For Melissa Menchella, she never expected to be a Hall of Famer.

Menchella has been a teacher at Eureka for six years, in addition to coaching Eureka field hockey, lacrosse and a club lacrosse team for seven years.

Menchella is a well known name in the local lacrosse community and for good reason.

Menchella came into high school as a freshman playing basketball while running cross country and track. She thought running was her future.

“I always thought I would end up running in college,” Menchella said.

After suffering from some running injuries as a freshman, then feeling burnt out from her running career as a sophomore, Menchella decided to spend the spring of her sophomore year stepping away from track and focusing on trying a new sport: Lacrosse.

“It always looked like the lacrosse team was having so much fun out there at practices when I would watch them after my track practices were over and I wanted to experience that,” Menchella said. “I ended up falling in love with the sport and never looked back.”

Menchella’s choice to switch to lacrosse paid off; she played on varsity as a junior and senior and eventually went to Lindenwood University, a NCAA Division II level school, to continue her love and career for lacrosse.

“It was the best time of my life,” Menchella said. “I loved every minute that I had a lacrosse stick in my hand both at Eureka and Lindenwood and was so thankful that I picked up a stick when I was a sophomore because it completely changed my life and gave me a new passion.”

After graduating college, Menchella found her way back to Eureka to continue her love for lacrosse, this time as a coach.

“It is so rewarding to know that it

all started for me here at Eureka, and now I’m back at Eureka watching high school athletes go through the same path as I did and develop a passion for the game as soon as they pick up a stick,” Menchella said.

Menchella excels in coaching, just like she did in playing. She possesses many skills and characteristics that set her apart and form bonds with her athletes.

“I love the sport so much and often can’t contain it, so I would like to think I get really excited out on the field a lot especially when I see things clicking with the team and when we do well,” Menchella said. “I love celebrating their successes with them on the field, but at the same time I try to push them to want more as a group and not settle for anything less than what we are capable of being as a team, or else we are wasting our time in practices.”

Menchella’s enthusiasm is recognized by the girls on her team.

“Menchy has so much passion for not only lacrosse but any other challenge you put in her path,” lacrosse player Haley Ritchie, 12, said. “She also cares for the culture and atmosphere of everything she does, which is [what] I admire the most.”

Kennedy Rausch, 12, recognizes her dedication to the sport.

“I would say that Menchella is always willing to put in the work outside of class and practice that helps give the team an edge over the competition and a class a better understanding,” Rausch said.

Mia Smith, 11, appreciates her commitment to organization.

“Her organization with how practice is run each day has always made her stand out to me,” Smith said.

In September 2021, Lindenwood announced their five former athletes who would be inducted into the Lindenwood Athletics Hall of Fame.

Melissa Menchella was one of those five. Menchella appeared in 74 games, including 73 starts, and broke the school record for goals scored (183) and total points (233), in her four year career.

Menchella received many accolades, including the NCAA DII Lacrosse Student-Athlete of the Year, NCAA Elite 89 Award, Lindenwood’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year, a two-time IWLCA All-American, including firstteam honors in 2015, and a first-team Academic All-American.

Receiving an award like this would be astonishing to anyone, and Menchella felt like she was representing her hometown by getting this award.

“I was initially so honored to have the recognition of being inducted into the Lindenwood Hall of Fame, especially because I am a Midwest lacrosse player and I am very proud of that. Lacrosse is heavily an east coast sport, so the Midwest does not get much recognition when it comes to lacrosse,” Menchella said. “Every time I wore a Lindenwood jersey, I took it very seriously knowing that I was out there representing all the St. Louis lacrosse players from the Midwest, so it is an honor knowing that I was chosen for a recognition of such caliber as a lacrosse player from St. Louis.”

Menchella has stayed exceedingly humble with the Hall of Fame recognition.

“This may sound crazy, but I also felt very undeserving because the level of talent I got to play with each day at Lindenwood was insane. I played with teammates who were so ridiculously talented and helped make me look good, when if it weren’t for them, I would have never been able to accomplish all that I did during my time at Lindenwood,” Menchella said.

“So, I owe a lot of that recognition to them for helping me get there. It is

humbling to think that I truly would not have been near the player I was able to be without my teammates and phenomenal coaches I was lucky enough to have during my 4 years at Lindenwood.”

Anna Voigt, co-worker of Menchella, didn’t even know about the award until she figured it out for herself.

“She’s very humble and didn’t talk about it with anyone,” Voigt said. “It wasn’t until she was asking me about a speech she was writing that I put two and two together.”

The girls on Menchella’s lacrosse team were ecstatic when they learned about her award.

“I was super excited, but not surprised,” Rausch said. “She totally deserves it for all of the work that she put into the program and into the game of lacrosse.”

Ritchie and Smith felt the same way upon being told about the award.

“I felt so happy for her and happy that all the hard work she puts into being healthy and strong paid off,” Smith said.

When hearing about the award, Ritchie felt like she was being coached by a celebrity.

“When Menchy told me she had been inducted into the Hall of Fame at Lindenwood, I felt as though I was being coached by a celebrity and a legend. Also, I realized how fortunate I was to be coached by someone who has so much experience in the lacrosse world and how much I can learn from her,” Ritchie said.

With everyone Menchella has grown close to over the years, many people hold near and dear memories of her.

“Every time I’m with Menchella new memories are made, so it’s hard to think of one. Some that are my favorite would be doing fun lacrosse tricks together, talking about pasta and watching her hold the child development babies,” Smith said.

Ritchie has a memory that wouldn’t be the stereotypical happy memory, but to her it was still an important memory with Menchella.

“During practice, we ran for eight minutes and twenty-six seconds because we let the other team hold the ball for eight minutes and twenty-six seconds,” Ritchie said. “I love this memory because even though at the time it sucked running for that long, she knew what we were capable of

and wanted us to know the expectations.”

Rausch’s memory shows the close bond and laughs Menchella shares with her girls.

“Menchella is usually pretty serious, but there are moments when she laughs at our jokes and dances with us. When we were at the banquette for lacrosse, we were all in a dance circle and we forced [Menchella] into the middle. At first, she just stood there, but then she just spread out her arms and started spinning in a circle. It was so random but so funny,” Rausch said. “She never degrades you for it, she just tells you how you can improve and encourages you to fix it next time.”

Voigt has memories from when she got the opportunity to coach Menchella as a highschool student.

“When I coached basketball, I had to coach a JV tournament and I remember her ability to be relentless on the court…I was so excited to get to coach a team with her on it,” Voight said.

Menchella has become a beloved and salient factor in making so many high school students academic and athletes careers so enjoyable.

WHAT IS the transfer portal?

How have the new transfer portal rules have affected college athletics?

In spring of 2021 the NCAA changed it’s ruling on the transfer portal allowing athletes to transfer to a different school and play immediately. A record was set in 2021 with over 1,700 athletes transferring, but the record is on pace to break in 2022.

The transfer portal allows athletes to create an immediate impact on a program and also allows players to cash in on an opportunity to earn some money off name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals. But while many athletes may benefit from the new rules of the transfer portal, high school recruits are facing challenges in finding a future landing spot.

Eureka varsity football assistant coach Tyler Wasson has seen how the transfer portal affects high school students. In his eyes the biggest effect of the transfer portal is the scholarships high school athletes lose.

“In this day in age of college football, especially in the top tier division one, one double A and even in division 2, these guys have got to win as it’s a business,” Wasson said. “So they have to win now. You are going to feel more comfortable betting on somebody you or coaches have had eyes on with college experience as opposed to a freshman. As talented as they may be, you are taking a lot more gamble [on high school athletes].”

Eureka JV basketball player Nate Dorner, 10, believes that the transfer portal can immediately impact a team’s outlook.

“You know what they say, one good player can change the whole team nowadays,” Dorner said.

Though Wasson see’s some negative effects associated with the transfer portal, he understands why athletes value the freedom associated with the new rules.

“You want everybody to have the ability to make the best decision for themselves,” Wasson said. “You should have the ability to make a business decision for yourself about what’s the best place and opportunity.”

As well as players, teams can benefit from the immediate eligibility of players. In some circumstances, it is what allows schools, like Lindenwood, to compete with a change of circumstances as they are now a D1 program.

“They have got to win now, they get 20 extra scholarships,” Wasson said.

“What’s probably going to be the best way they can go into the OVC and compete with the SEMO and the other guys who have had 20 plus more scholarships. They go into the portal.”

Eureka varsity basketball player Carter Luft, 11, believes that the new ruling of the transfer portal creates problems in creating a college athletic program. While new players can have a positive impact on the team, other attributes that make a team successful

can deteriorate.

“I think you get guys who don’t tough it out as much, so there’s not as many four year players who build a program. Instead you get guys who come for one year and leave when stuff gets hard. It hurts the integrity of the team,” Luft said.

With the new changes, the future of college athletics is uncertain. From where it stands, the transfer portal does not seem to be going back to its old ruling.

“The transfer portal’s here to stay, NIL is here to stay,” Wasson said. “So I think you just have to figure out a way to protect student athletes in high school and how to set these institutions up to where the business model still is built on high school kids as opposed to the transfer portal.”

Eureka High School’s star pitcher, senior Dylan Tate, is in the midst of a recovery after receiving Tommy John surgery due to pitching. During his junior year, he committed to a D1 baseball school, Lindenwood University.

Hearing the news that he would have to get the surgery was heartbreaking especially having just committed and finally getting up to the velocity he wanted.

“I was pretty down for awhile, I didn’t feel happy at all, one thing I was looking forward to was my senior season and I kind of lost that, so I was not in a very good state of mind. I had just pulled down 95 and then it was all over, it felt like I worked so hard for no reason,” Tate said.

After nearing the date of the surgery, Tate said he was honestly not scared, he was more scared of the road ahead rather than the surgery itself.

“Leading up to the surgery I wasn’t nervous until the day, I was more nervous about being put under in order to have the surgery rather than being nervous about the surgery itself,” Tate said.

Tommy John is a very serious and restrictive surgery, people who have to get it are usually out of their activity for a long time. It is commonly used to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament inside the elbow by replacing it with a tendon from elsewhere in the body.

“As of right now I can’t do much of anything with my right arm, I am doing some physical therapy in order to strengthen my arm and just moving and trying to get my range of motion back and then we will go into throwing and pitching and all that stuff,” Tate said.

The road after Tommy John is an extremely long one, longer than Tate had thought it was going to be.

“At first I did my own research and saw that the recovery time will be around 6-9 months, but after talking to a doctor I learned that the recovery time will be around 12-16 months and that puts me back into spring of my freshman year of college. I would maybe have to register for that because I will not be able to throw. I am hoping to recover faster, but with Tommy John, often there are more delays than a more rapid comeback,” Tate said.

Tate will unfortunately be missing out on a lot of baseball due to his surgery and the long recovery that comes from it.

“I will unfortunately not be able to play my highschool season. I will be managing the varsity team which will allow me to be around the game and the guys that I have spent these four years with,” Tate said.

Although Tate was the star pitcher for the team, James Daffron, Eureka High School’s baseball team’s head coach, still has high hopes for his team and hopes for a fairly successful season.

“I absolutely think we still have potential this year, injuries happen, and if you’re lucky enough to have the depth of talent which I think we do, I don’t think we will be as successful without Dylan but I definitely still think we have potential with all the talent on this team,” Daffron said.

Daffron also has high hopes for Dylan’s recovery, he believes that he was it takes to make a full recovery.

“The Tommy John technology and the doctors nowadays are so good that I think he has the chance to come back stronger espiecially with how hard of a worker he is,” Daffron said.
