Bolingbrook has little trouble with Montini By Rob Valentin Sports editor

Bolingbrook left no doubt as to who holds the crown as Queen of Illinois basketball. The Raiders steamrolled their way past Montini — the defending Class 3A state champions — 7963 in the 21st Annual McDonald’s Shootout at Willowbrook High School on Monday. Ariel Massengale and Morgan Tuck were simply unstoppable as they combined to score 43 points and wreaked havoc in transition as a sellout crowd of 3,300 watched on. “It was a big game and we don’t usually get to play in front of this many people,” said Tuck, a junior who has verbally committed to play basketball at UCONN. “We saw the crowd before the game and that gets you kind of excited. And I think everyone was really excited because this is the most competition we’ve had in state this year.” Bolingbrook (14-2) hasn’t lost a game to an Illinois team since the 2007-2008 season and has won the last two Class 4A state championships. They handed Montini its first loss of the season as the Lady Broncos fell to 23-1. “We were hyped up and looking forward to this game,” said Massengale, who will play college basketball at Tennessee. “For us seniors, this was our last time playing here so we just wanted to come out, play hard

and leave it all on the court.” Monday’s contest was only close for a couple of minutes. With the Raiders holding a 10-7 lead, Massengale and Tuck completely took over going on a 12-3 run thanks to eight points from Tuck and four from Massengale. Bolingbrook led 22-13 after one quarter of play and took a 3726 lead into halftime. Montini scored the first two points of the third quarter to cut the deficit to nine but a 10-0 run by the Raiders ended any hope the Broncos had of winning. During the spurt, Tuck and Massengale each had a two-point field goal while Taylor Tuck — an Illinois recruit, who scored 10 points — and Massengale bombed home three-pointers. Montini could never get the lead under 13 points after that. “I think the girls did a great job tonight,” Bolingbrook head coach Tony Smith said. “They played hard and had fun with it. I was pleased tonight, first time all year I was pleased.” “We’re getting ready to go into the playoffs next month and defend our state championship,” Rob Valentin/Bugle staff
