This evening, we are proud to celebrate the students of Buffalo Prep and their dedication, motivation, and aspirations for the future.

Since its founding in 1989, Buffalo Prep has been helping to close the access and opportunity gaps for thousands of Western New York students. We nurture the dreamer, the leader, the activist, and the scholar in every student. Buffalo Prep is not a school, but rather, a dedicated organization that works with private, public, and charter high schools to prepare and support talented underrepresented youth as they pursue a first-rate college preparatory education.

Our commitment is shared by our partner high schools. We sincerely thank them for welcoming our students and seeing diversity and inclusion as an asset. We thank them, too, for providing more than $500,000 in annual tuition assistance for Buffalo Prep scholars.

We also extend our appreciation to the University at Buffalo for its unwavering support of the Buffalo Prep program. UB’s dedication to educational programs, beginning as early as pre-kindergarten, touches countless lives within our community every day.

And we couldn’t do it without you. As we grow and expand, we look to our corporate, foundation, and individual donors to continue your advocacy and help spread the word about the work Buffalo Prep is doing to benefit students, families, and our community.

SCHOLARSHIPS The AAF Buffalo Future Marketer Scholarship

The American Advertising Federation Buffalo Board of Directors is proud to present the Future Marketer Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a graduating Buffalo Prep student who is planning to study communications, advertising or marketing in college. AAF Buffalo is committed to working with Buffalo Prep to help grow the next generation of talent in the advertising and marketing industry. Congratulations to all the students for their achievements.

Alpha Kappa Boulé Scholarship Alpha Kappa Boulé was organized by Archon Anthony T. Gillam, who had been a member of Pi Boulé in Little Rock, Arkansas. He and his wife, Valerie Gillam, hosted the chartering ceremony in their home in Buffalo, New York, where they were joined by George Redd, Ennis L. Powell, Russell F. Minton, and C.M. Roulhac, Sr. The Boulé experienced slow growth until 1981 when 13 new members were inducted. In 1983, Alpha Kappa hosted the Northeast Regional Boulé in Buffalo. Acting on a study conducted by an Alpha Kappa committee, which concluded there was a pressing need for higher education among the underprivileged of Buffalo, the Boulé established The Alpha Kappa Boulé Education Foundation (TAKBEF) in 1976.

Over the past 25 years the Foundation has given more than $250,000 in scholarships to more than 200 students.

The program’s success is largely credited to the leadership provided by the chairman, the late Archon A. Clifford Brown, who managed the program from its inception. Alpha Kappa Boulé is proud to continue this legacy by supporting the Buffalo Prep Scholars.

The Hodgson Russ LLP Diversity Scholarship For over five years, Hodgson Russ LLP has supported the Buffalo Prep scholars. We are pleased tonight to announce the Hodgson Russ Diversity Scholarship winner. In connection with Hodgson Russ LLP’s commitment to diversity in our community and in the legal profession, the Hodgson Russ Diversity Scholarship is awarded annually to one Buffalo Prep college-bound senior with an interest in a law-related career. Hodgson Russ congratulates all of the scholarship applicants for their excellent records of personal and academic achievement.

National Fuel Gas Company Foundation Scholarship As part of National Fuel Gas Company Foundation’s commitment to recruiting high-quality candidates from across Western New York interested in working within the energy sector, and in keeping with the effort to increase the number of diverse candidates considering careers in IT (programming, cyber security, software engineer, etc.), Business Administration or Engineering, National Fuel is pleased to award three $15,000 scholarships per year for a total of four years to college-bound seniors graduating from Buffalo Prep.

Buffalo Prep is extremely pleased to honor M&T Bank. Known for its dedication to our city and region, the bank has been involved with our organization since the very beginning.

The late Robert G. Wilmers, former chairman and CEO of M&T, together with other community leaders, was a founder in 1989. He remained a steadfast friend to the program and advocate for educational equity. His vision, and belief that Buffalo’s success and vibrancy are only truly attainable when all of its citizens are given the equal opportunity to pursue an education, remain a cornerstone of all that we do.

M&T’s current chairman and CEO, René Jones, continues this unwavering dedication paralleled by our M&T Board members and committee members.

For 30 years, M&T Bank has been a valuable and generous partner, fully supporting the continuum of our seven-year programming pipeline and beyond. Last year, M&T established a scholarship fund at Buffalo Prep in Mr. Wilmers’ name in addition to endowing the executive director position to recognize his legacy. A profound investment in Buffalo Prep is also seen in the bank’s commitment to our alumni through internships as well as full-time employment and career development.

Additionally, from hosting informative workshops to having employees as mentors and volunteers in countless other ways, the bank’s commitment is palpable and matchless.

TRIBUTE TO

The Children’s Foundation of Erie County It is with gratitude that Buffalo Prep honors the Children’s Foundation of Erie County, which has supported our organization since its very early years.

The Children’s Foundation has a long history of assisting and supporting the children of our community and makes grants to more than 50 agencies. Organized as the Buffalo Orphan Asylum in November 1836, the then Board of Trustees was dedicated to housing and financially supporting children in need in the City of Buffalo. When the orphanage ceased operation and the building was sold in the late 1940s, the assets of the Asylum were entrusted to the Board of Trustees to be used to continue their work on behalf of the children of our community.

Since those years, much has changed in our community, but the nine dedicated Trustees of the Foundation continue to uphold the recently updated mission statement “to support nonprofit organizations that are committed to improving the quality of life for at risk children in the County of Erie.” Their grants focus on organizations that have a proven track record of assisting, protecting, and enhancing the lives and potential of children up to age 21, and have greatly impacted our organization. Additionally, one of their Trustees sits on our Board of Directors, with others also serving as committed advocates in the community on our behalf beyond their roles at the Foundation.

The Children’s Foundation has heralded Buffalo Prep as epitomizing its mission, explaining, “Prep’s 30 years of educating, supporting, mentoring, and inspiring our community’s talented and deserving students has been instrumental in providing equity and opportunity to thousands of children. The trustees of the Children’s Foundation salute Buffalo Prep’s many years of dedication and hard work to make our Buffalo community a better place.”

As we celebrate our core value of excellence, the Children’s Foundation of Erie County is a prime honoree.

As we celebrate 30 years of continuously providing academic, social, and cultural enrichment to over 500 college-bound students throughout our summer, after-school, and Saturday programs, we also take pause to reflect on our evolution.

We have witnessed tremendous growth in terms of how many regional scholars we support. In 1989, Buffalo Prep was founded and located in Diefendorf Annex, one of the temporary structures on the University at Buffalo’s South Campus. A small group of dedicated teachers mentored 10 students for academic success in high school and beyond.

We have implemented a culturally relevant and sustaining curriculum to better reflect and affirm the inherent value of our students’ cultural, racial, and ethnic identities and literacies and to best serve them and impact achievement. Empowered students are active citizens and a strong workforce.

To reflect these transformations, a larger, up-to-date, and innovative learning center is necessitated.

The University at Buffalo affirmed its long-term commitment to Buffalo Prep through an investment in our continued evolution by partnering with us to move to a new home on campus, Allen Hall. Not only does moving into this historic building signal our continued development as a valuable resource for talented underrepresented students, it also echoes the ongoing revitalization of our city.

Buffalo Prep and Co-Chairs Jock and Betsy Mitchell successfully launched Prep for Tomorrow, a capital campaign to cover the costs associated with the renovation, bringing up to code, and refurbishing of the building as well as the core spatial and classroom planning. As construction and compliance upgrades began, we turned to the next phase of the Prep for Tomorrow campaign and buildout of state-of-the art, innovative, fluid classrooms, offices, and technology. We thank the University at Buffalo for its continued belief in our mission, and we thank you, our Buffalo Prep supporters and advocates for your willingness to be a part of this vital transition in our history.
