Welcome to Buffalo County in West Central Wisconsin on the Mighty Mississippi River! As the northernmost section of the 4-state Driftless Region, the non-glaciated lands of Buffalo County offer 500-foot bluffs along the Upper Mississippi River Valley, high ridges, winding valleys, prairies, oak savannas, river bottoms and an abundance of Wisconsin’s protected Natural Areas. The Upper Mississippi National Wildlife & Fish Refuge and the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge protect the Mississippi River wetlands. Views from Buena Vista in Alma and Elmer’s Auto & Toy Museum in Fountain City are the highest points overlooking the Mississippi River valley.

TO BUFFALO COUNTY

Century farms from the 1850s, when agriculture first came to Buffalo County, dot the countryside. Organic and CSA farming can be found in the county as well as the newest rage, pizza farms. Buffalo County boasts four pizza farms, with Suncrest Gardens Farm, the original. Two wineries, Seven Hawks in Fountain City and Danzinger in Alma, are part of the wine renaissance in Buffalo County … growing their own grapes and making their own wines. They’re an important part of the local viticulture, producing award winning wines and offering beautiful tasting rooms. Fountain City was the first settlement in Buffalo County in 1839, followed by Alma, Wisconsin in 1848. Today most of the City of Alma is a National Historic District but both communities are beautiful historic river towns. Since the 1860’s when Gerhard Gesell opened his photography & art studio, Buffalo County has attracted artists. Today there is a thriving art community where you’ll find unique, one-of-a-kind items inspired by Buffalo County’s natural surroundings. Make sure you take to Buffalo County’s 470 miles of paved county & state roads for enjoyable backroad driving. Just get lost in the beauty or try Mondovi to Waumandee Valley and on to Fountain City & the Mississippi River for a cross-county drive. You’ll wind you way through breathtaking scenery and rural farms. Discover a place that remains mostly untouched by modern development. Need proof? There’s only one stop light in the county to let the folks from Minnesota into Wisconsin for a getaway! Are you a birder? The entire western coast of Buffalo County borders the Mississippi River and the Mississippi Flyway. More than 350 bird species migrate in the spring and fall along the Flyway. Numerous Bald Eagle nests can be seen on the river and Alma, Wisconsin is known as a birding “hot spot”, just being named as a Wisconsin Bird City. Art, antiques, shopping, locally-grown food, live music, nature, festivals and fun await you in Buffalo County. Thanks for coming and enjoy your stay! TABLE OF CONTENTS

COVER IMAGE — Many thanks to local artist Gail Pommerening for permission to use her popular work “Great Alma Fishing Float”. A self-taught artist, Gail expresses her God-given talent in pastel paintings subtly touched with a feeling of soft romance. Her work is inspired by all things in nature, but she is especially fond of the birds and wildlife that reside in the rolling Wisconsin woodlands surrounding her home. Gail’s subject versatility has led to nationwide and international sales of original art, limited edition prints and numerous commissioned works and we are very honored to have her work grace our cover. Art & Soul Gallery in Alma, Wisconsin is home to many of her works and a dream come true. Established in 2005, this little gallery is housed within the Hotel de Ville and nestled below the bluffs along Highway 35 in historic Alma, WI. Gail’s business partner, Sarah Gailey, has a mission-based import business. Sarah also creates beautiful handcrafted jewelry. Every painting, every notecard, every scarf, every piece of jewelry - everything that Art & Soul sells, has a percentage donated somewhere either locally or internationally. The 250-mile Wisconsin Great River Road is part of the ten-state Great River Road National Scenic Byway, which follows the Mississippi River for 3,000 miles through ten states, from northern Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. Established in 1938 by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the Great River Road is America’s oldest and most distinguished byway. The Buffalo County communities highlighted with a red star are 5 of the 33 historic river towns & villages recognized as Wisconsin Great River Road communities. Views from the Wisconsin portion of this National Scenic Byway are protected and preserved through the work of the Wisconsin Mississippi River Parkway Commission. The Buffalo County Board also created a recreational overlay district to protect the area. Buffalo County is one of 8 western Wisconsin counties bordering the Mississippi River and Wisconsin State Highway 35, also known as the Wisconsin Great River Road.

“The majestic bluffs that overlook the river, along through this region, charm one with the grace and variety of their forms, and the soft beauty of their adornment. The steep, verdant slope, whose base is at the water’s edge, is topped by a lofty rampart of broken, turreted rocks which are exquisitely rich and mellow in color -- mainly dark browns and dull greens, but splashed with other tints. And then you have the shining river, winding here and there and yonder, its sweep interrupted at intervals by clusters of wooded islands threaded by silver channels; and you have glimpses of distant villages, asleep upon capes; and of stealthy rafts slipping along in the shade of the forest walls; and of white steamers vanishing around remote points. And it is all as tranquil and reposeful as dreamland, and has nothing this-worldly about it -- nothing to hang a fret or a worry upon. “ Mark Twain (1883)

In this 24,000 square mile region, the land surface avoided glacial advances that crossed North America. For this reason, western Wisconsin, southeastern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa together are known as the Driftless Area. Drift is a mixture of rocks and gravel, boulders and residue normally left behind by retreating glaciers.

… the paved County Roads are a true treasure and allow you to reach deep into Buffalo County. As rivers and streams approach their confluence with the Mississippi, their canyons grow progressively steeper and deeper. The Mississippi River trench is one of the few places in the Driftless Area where the bedrock is very deep below the surface and often matches the height of the surrounding riverfront bluffs.

UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVER NATIONAL WILDLIFE & FISH REFUGE The “jewel” of the natural areas in Buffalo County is the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge. It was established by an Act of Congress in 1924 “as a breeding place for migratory bids, fish, other wildlife & plants.” The northern end begins at the confluence of the Mississippi and Chippewa rivers in Buffalo County and the southern end is near Rock Island, Illinois. Just over 240,000 acres of wooded islands, marshes, and backwaters comprise the Refuge, winding through 4 states for 261 miles providing a home for hundreds of species of fish, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects and native plants.

The communities of Buffalo County offer local parks and vistas with over 20 parks available for your enjoyment. Fishing, hiking, birding, camping and picnics await!

Fountain City and Alma were the centers of settlement. Roads were difficult to build with the prevalence of marsh lands and streams causing the trails to hug the sides of bluffs and follow the ridges. Common practice was to avoid crossing streams & rivers, so the trails traveled along steep grades and traversed through ravines & along ridges. To get from the Mississippi River to the top of the bluffs, early settlers built roads called “dug ways”; trails that were literally dug out of the bluff side. There are still several dug ways today in Buffalo County. Roadways have changed over the last 160 years but following the general direction of these original trails you can explore the history of the county as you travel through the beauty of the Driftless Region in Buffalo County. Combined with the broad rural landscape, preserved barns and Century Farms that have been in families for generations you’ll appreciate the beauty that is Buffalo County.

BUFFALO COUNTY

In the 19th Century, Buffalo County’s roads that took the traveler into the interior of the county were little more than dirt trails obstructed with boulders, rough & uneven. Today our county roads are paved and well maintained … just waiting for the backroad traveler to explore. There is little traffic except for an occasional piece of farm equipment and the County’s only stop light at the turnoff to the Winona Bridge crossing over the Mississippi River!

E X P L O R E

Wisconsin State Highway 88 — North of Fountain City travel through the Waumandee Valley to Cream, Praag (and the Praag Dug Way) & Gilmanton. Or turn right on County Road E to travel to Waumandee or turn left on County Road E at Cream to travel to Alma. Wisconsin State Highway 37 — North of Alma travel through the Buffalo River Valley to Tell, the historic Tell Church, Modena, Gilmanton & Mondovi, crossing over the Buffalo River several times. Wisconsin State Highway 25 — From the Minnesota Border, travel through Nelson, then turn right and travel along the Chippewa River Valley to Misha Mokwa, Modena & Durand.

Buffalo County lies at the heart of the Wisconsin Great River Road (WI State Hwy 35), the state’s first Scenic Byway and Wisconsin’s only designated National Scenic Byway. If you’re traveling Wisconsin’s Great River Road make sure to stop and enjoy all that Buffalo County has to offer from lodging and restaurants to wineries, bluff top views and beautiful natural surroundings.

It Began With 19th Century Wine Making

W I N E T A S T I N G IN THE COUNTY

Vintage 19th Century Vineyard in Alma Wisconsin, photo by Gerhard Gesell

Vineyards and wine making came to Buffalo County in the mid 19th century with the arrival of settlers from Switzerland and the provinces that became Germany. Today the tradition of wine making continues and Buffalo County hosts two tasting rooms/wineries/vineyards. The County is also a great central location to base your regional wine tasting adventures with lodging, great food and access to 7 of the great River Road Wine Trail wineries within a 30-45 minute drive. More info at greatriverroadwinetrail.org.

TRUE LOCAL WINES Looking for a wine tasting adventure? Buffalo County offers local estate bottled wines at two award winning wineries: Danzinger Vineyard sitting atop the Alma Bluff and overlooking the Mississippi River and Seven Hawks Vineyard in historic Fountain City. Wine tastings are free at both tasting rooms. Travel safely, designate a driver and enjoy a delightful glass of wine while visiting Buffalo County. If you are following the Great River Road Wine Trail, Buffalo County is a perfect home base for an overnight stay offering many options for lodging, dining and adventure. We’re located within an hour of 9 wineries, and just a few minutes from most. UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVER VALLEY VITICULTURE AREA Buffalo County’s wineries grow their own grapes in vineyards that are focused on coldclimate grapes. Offering red wines, white wines & dessert wines … many of them are award winners. Both wineries

produce estate bottled grape wines made from their own grapes and bottled on-site. Danzinger Vineyards also offers fruit wines.

WINERIES & TASTING ROOMS DANZINGER VINEYARD was named “Winery Of The Year” in 2013 by the Wisconsin Grape Growers Association. Their tasting room & patio have a fabulous view of the Upper Mississippi River Valley! Main Hall and the Pavilion are available for weddings and special events.

SEVEN HAWKS VINEYARDS grows their grapes in the vineyards just north of Fountain City and offers wine tasting at their Tasting Room & Wine Bar in historic Fountain City. Available for special events.
