Since the beginning of the year, our attendance is 31% higher than last year at this same time. The dedication of our volunteers, staff and members of the Board of Directors is creating an experience that is new, exciting and educational. Likewise, our members and donors play a key role to ensure that our historical, architectural and botanical treasure remains a vibrant part of our community’s cultural landscape for decades to come. Through combined efforts, the Botanical Gardens raised an impressive 94% of its annual operating budget in 2016, while receiving just 6% from government funding. This wouldn’t happen without your support. Thank you! The Botanical Gardens received two significant honors this year. In recognition for the reconstruction of greenhouses 2 and 3, we were a finalist in the Brick by Brick Historic Preservation Award by Business First, Evans Bank and Phillips Lytle LLC. Also, Buffalo Spree Magazine presented us with a Best of WNY Award for the Best Winter Escape. This summer, the Botanical Gardens extended its footprint nationally. The American Public Gardens Association annual convention was in Hamilton, Ontario in June. Nearly 60 conference attendees traveled to Buffalo in order to tour our conservatory and have lunch here. All were very impressed with our beautiful conservatory and collection. Also, the Garden Writers Association held their annual convention in Buffalo in August. A special reception was held at the Botanical Gardens where hundreds of the nation’s garden writers experienced firsthand our beautiful architecture and unique collection. Our annual Gala on September 22 is expected to be a great success. This year’s Honorary Chairs are C.J. and Susan Urlaub. C.J. is the President of Mercy Hospital, part of Catholic Health and former Botanical Gardens Board Member. Co-Chairs for the Gala are Diane Chrisman, former Executive Director of the Buffalo and Erie County Library and Sharon Osgood, a practicing attorney in Buffalo. If you are interested in attending, contact Brittany Zandi at bzandi@buffalogardens.com. Our education team is busy preparing for a significant increase in our elementary hands-on school programs this fall. Several grant awards will allow us to double the number of students, from Buffalo Public Schools, and Charter Schools to participate in our great programs. Finally, the holiday season will be here before you know it, so keep the Botanical Gardens in mind if you are considering a family or business reception. It’s a great place for a party or meeting. Christina Stannard, Director of Weddings and Special Events, cstannard@buffalogardens.com, would love to work with you. From all of us at the Botanical Gardens, thank you for your support!

Gratitude Garden

We are planning an exciting and meaningful exhibit for the Spring Flower Exhibit 2018! Inspired by Tibetan Prayer Flags, we will create our own Gratitude Garden. As a staff, when we think about what we are grateful for, the list of supporters to thank is extremely long! The Botanical Gardens is a truly magnificent place that has touched many lives, and there is so much for which to be thankful. We want to express our gratitude to all of our donors, sponsors, members, volunteers, vendors and friends through an art installation inside the Botanical Gardens. We also want to give our community and visitors the opportunity to express gratitude to this amazing place.

Tibetan Prayer Flags in Tibet

From September through December, we will offer Gratitude Flags to all of our supporters. We are encouraging everyone to participate in this exhibit by writing what the Botanical Gardens means to them, their favorite memory at the Botanical Gardens, favorite flower, etc… on their own personal flag. Our team and volunteers will then string the colorful flags throughout the entire conservatory to complement the Spring Flower Exhibit to create our Gratitude Garden. Our goal is to accumulate 2,000 Gratitude Flags, complete with personal notes, for this amazing new exhibit. Blank flags will be distributed to specific groups that are close to the Botanical Gardens to acquire a personal note on each. Blank flags will also be available in the Gift Shop and Admission Desk for a small donation of $2 each. Visitors will be supplied with a marker to write a special note of gratitude on them. The Gift Shop and Admission Desk will collect the flags for inclusion in this new exhibit. Express your gratitude to the Botanical Gardens on your own personal flag and join us this spring to see the exhibit come together at the Spring Flower Exhibit 2018! Contact the Development Department for more information 827.1584 ext. 295.

In Case You Missed It! The past few months have been a very busy time for the Botanical Gardens with a wide range of events, from weddings and showers to luncheons and memorial services. There were a couple of events that stood out above all the rest.

Volunteers Do you have extra time? Do you enjoy helping the community? If so, consider becoming a part of the Botanical Gardens’ volunteer family! Meet friendly people, learn more about plants, and provide support for our evergrowing programs. There is a lot to do! You may train as a horticulture volunteer and work inside and outside the greenhouses. Or your choice may be to help maintain our facilities with carpentry, electrical, and maintenance work. Maybe you would prefer administrative support and computer tasks. Or you may be tempted to work in the Gift Shop. Training as a docent means you would provide handson activities for visitors of all ages. Finally, there are volunteers that help with special events and weddings. Join our Volunteer Family! Orientation is September 6. INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE! Karen Hammer

Toward the beginning of event season, we hosted a gorgeous intimate reception of 60 guests. Fresh flowers in mini vases lined the center of farm tables where the guests dined. Combined with white lights strung on our ficus trees and draping ivy, this room was breathtaking. In June, we hosted a wedding that utilized a large tent on the front lawn. The tent added an extension to the conservatory, allowing us to provide our guests with both an indoor and outdoor experience. The tent was set up for 130 guests. The tables had stunning centerpieces of yellow sunflowers with complimentary blue, burgundy, and orange flowers. The candle lighting underneath the tent combined with the Palm Dome lit up in red created a beautiful scene. We host many events throughout each year. Our uniqueness and natural beauty draws people in. This event season was an exciting time, and we look forward to what the rest of the year has in store! To book your next event, please contact us at 827.1584 ext. 219, ext. 220 or events@buffalogardens .com.

Kim Bellavia Art Exhibit - October 7 - November 5 New! Bellavia is a sculptor/mixed media artist inspired by the landscape of the state parks, woodlands and National forests in the Finger Lakes Region of NY, where she lives. Bellavia’s work depicts how nature and human nature weave themselves into the intrigue of life and the entropy of existence. Her most recent work “Whispering from the Woods”, is a series of 25 sculptures that will travel in 2018. The sculptures are constructed using a unique process of combining disregarded materials, such as stumps, branches, moss and vines, combined with an earthen material made of clay, sand and soil. Influenced by folklore, myth and symbolism of trees from different cultures, the forms in her work reveal the human aura of trees.

SCOUT PROGRAMS

General Scout Programs We offer a variety of programs for both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts that include a tour of the Botanical Gardens, along with a hands-on lesson. The general program lasts one hour and can be tailored to suit different ages and abilities. Here are our hands-on program options: Tropical Terrariums: Learn about what plants need to grow and the water cycle while creating the perfect habitat for a tropical plant. This miniature ecosystem is fun to create and easy to care for. Succulent Garden: Don’t worry - no prickly cacti are involved in this activity, instead we study succulents! Succulents are desert plants that store water in their leaves. We’ll create an open garden space in a tray with these thorn-less plants, while learning about plant adaptations.

Badge Requirement Programs We also offer badge programs for Girl Scouts. These programs fulfill some or all of the requirements for both general and skill building badges. All programs are two hours long and include a tour of the Botanical Gardens, along with hands-on activities. Here is a list of our badge programs: Daisy Clover Petal - Use Resources Wisely Brownie Outdoor Art Creator Badge Brownie Bugs! Badge Junior Flower Badge Junior Gardener Badge Cadette Breathe Badge Cadette Tree Badge For Additional Information, contact the Education Department at 827.1584 ext. 223 or aoldham@buffalogardens.com

Gardening Tip

OUR CITY YOUR MAGAZINE

Think Ahead for Tulips If you want flowers such as tulips in the spring, you need to plant bulbs in the fall. Wait until the soil has cooled, around September, but try to get the bulbs planted by about mid-October so they have plenty of time to develop good, strong roots. Don’t Ignore your Herbs Unlike tender vegetable plants such as tomatoes, many herbs can continue to produce long after the first frost. Cover the plant with a thick blanket of dried leaves and you may be able to harvest through the winter. Just remember to mark the position of the plant so you can find it when it’s covered by snow and leaves!

“I love Buffalo Spree because it keeps me up to date on the most relevant improvements to our city’s cultural landscape. It’s my go-to guide for what’s new and exciting in Buffalo!”

Connie Stofko Prepare Perennials for Winter Water your perennials in autumn. If the roots of the plant are moist in autumn, they will continue to grow, increasing the chances that the plant survives the winter. This is especially important for perennials that were planted in summer or fall.
