Greetings from the Botanical Gardens!

Summer is upon us and we look forward to a new growing season and all the beauty it brings, but we should not forget how fantastic this past winter and spring have been. The weather was certainly warmer than expected and the activity at the Botanical Gardens was fantastic, as well. On behalf of our entire Board and staff, thanks go out to all our volunteers, members and visitors for making 2011 the best year in history at the Botanical Gardens.

I’d like to share with you some of the milestones achieved in 2011. First, nearly 90,000 visitors came to the Gardens last year and for the first time our membership exceeded 3,000. Our educational programs for all age groups attracted more than 10,000 participants. These are record setting numbers and what’s more exciting is that 2012 looks to become another banner year. For example, attendance at our increasingly popular NIGHT LIGHTS show more than doubled the 2011 attendance and the Orchid Show attracted larger than expected crowds. The three week Spring Flower Show was as spectacular as ever, attracting over 17,000 visitors beginning with our wonderful kick off event - Paradise Under Glass. The flower displays were beautiful and kids of all ages enjoyed the Easter Bunny, Farmer Brown’s animals and a variety of educational experiences throughout the Show. And I can’t forget to mention that in April we added over 500 new members to the Botanical Gardens’ family too.

All of this and we still have a half a year left to achieve even greater successes.

Speaking of the remainder of the year, please check out the upcoming events, shows and educational programs in this edition. There are so many interesting and exciting activities for you and your family to enjoy at the Botanical Gardens. We scheduled some of your old favorites and added a number of new attractions, as well. Next time you visit, be certain to check out the Vivarium in House 12. It has been completely restored, creating a natural Florida everglades ecosystem that includes native plants, fish and soft shelled turtles. Also, we have added a new flower show, the Celebration of Color, this year. Not only will our visitors be able to enjoy the beautiful colors in our outdoor gardens, the Celebration of Color will extend into the Gardens creating an indoor/outdoor color spectacular.

Another new feature that will compliment the children’s outdoor garden is the upcoming opening of the indoor family garden. This feature was constructed through a generous grant from Wegmans. The indoor garden will provide children and families with year round opportunities through hands on activities to better understand the important role plants and proper nutrition play in our lives.

Parents be certain to check out the day camp educational opportunities available for your kids this summer. And remember to join us again for summertime musical experiences including Starry Night in the Garden on June 27 and a FREE Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra concert on June 29. While we would like summer to last longer we are also looking forward to the beautiful fall season with a return of the Succulent Show and fall plant sale.

The Botanical Gardens has refreshed and beautified the events department!

With renovations and updates flooding our event space as well as a new caterer, the events department is booming for business! A special thanks to both Unilock and Dore Landscape Associates as well as Gardens’ staff members Teresa Mazikowski and Steve McDonald, for their efforts in completing our renovation project!

The Gardens has added Oliver’s to our team of elite caterers who will produce the event of your dreams! Check out our website for more information or for contact info. National Public Gardens Day is a national day of celebration to raise awareness of America’s public gardens and their important role in environmental stewardship and awareness, plant and water conservation, and education in communities nationwide.

by Artist Joan Saba, a product will be complete in each class.

Master Gardeners of Erie County - May 12, 26, June 9, 23,

July 7, 21, August 4, 18, September 1, 15, 29 Master Gardeners will be at the Gardens to answer gardening questions. Bring your soil to test! Soil testing will be done while you wait. For a small fee of $5, you may bring up to three different samples. Soil remediation strategies will be suggested based on the findings. Proceeds from the soil testing benefit the Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners of Erie County. Please call 827.1584 ext. 291 for information on how to take your soil samples.

Wire Wrapped Stone Cabochon - May 17

6-8pm - GM$45, NM$50 Diana Traver of Exotic Gemmery will teach you how to create a pendent of your own! A cabochon (from the French word caboche or head), is a gemstone which has been shaped and polished as opposed to faceted. Chain not included.

Rachel - May 5-June 3 Through a Child’s Lens

THE ARCANGEL GALLERY

Her first exhibition... Rachel is a 10-yearold fourth grader. Her photographs have received first place at the Erie County Fair and she has won first place in the Binational Tourism Alliance’s Doors Open Niagara Architage Contest four years in a row, including an award for the photograph of the Botanical Gardens that is in this exhibition.

She enjoys taking pictures of plants and architecture, which makes the Gardens a natural fit. In the future, she hopes to be an art teacher and a photographer.

A great success last year... a visitor FAVORITE! This show will feature many different types of cacti and succulents displayed in unique ways. Some will be common landscape succulents used in rock gardens such as Sedums and Sempervivums (Hens and Chicks). We will also showcase many unusual or not so common plants such as the Split-Rock plant native to Africa.

There will be many different types of succulents such as Echeverias, Aeoniums and Euphorbias on display. New designs this year will include some whimsical surprises!
