T

he Tops Friendly Markets Mother Baby Unit, located on the eighth floor of the new John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital, is an integral part of the hospital’s journey to achieve and maintain Baby-Friendly status by the movement’s national accrediting body, Baby-Friendly USA. The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is a global program that was launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in 1991 to foster educational programs and recognize hospitals and birthing centers that promote optimal care for infant feeding and motherbaby bonding.

As the regional center for comprehensive and state-of-the-art pediatric, neonatal, perinatal, and obstetrical services in Western New York, Oishei Children’s Hospital will capitalize on new opportunities for change and innovation in patient care and experience. Physical links to Buffalo General Medical Center and Gates Vascular Institute bring together our region’s most advanced team of experts in critical care, neurosciences, and cardiovascular medicine to benefit pregnant patients.

Oishei Children’s Hospital began its journey to Baby-Friendly designation in 2014, as Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, when clinical

staff recognized the need to embrace evidence-based training indicating that skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding lead to improved health outcomes for mothers and infants.

Nationally, more and more hospitals are refocusing efforts to implement Baby-Friendly practices, which are considered the gold standard in post-partum maternity care. This includes moving away from antiquated in-hospital nurseries, and instead promoting couplet care and breastfeeding to maximize bonding and ensure that mother and infant remain together for the duration of their hospital stay.

Since its inception, BFHI has made strides in lactation support for new moms, in particular. For example, in hospitals today, there is less emphasis on formula feeding and infant feeding practices that have been proven to undermine breastfeeding. Today, Oishei Children’s Hospital and others have succeeded in creating environments conducive to implementing evidence-based care, educational tools, and methods free of commercial interests. All feeding options and preferences are considered and respected.

Oishei Children’s Hospital is currently in phase three of a four-phase accreditation process that empowers and trains all staff on the benefits of a Baby-Friendly environment for moms, infants, and families. By the end of 2018, Oishei Children’s Hospital will conclude the fourth phase.

The Tops Friendly Markets Mother Baby Unit comprises twenty-four contemporary private rooms, each with an in-room bathroom and shower, scenic views of Buffalo, and a pullout couch for visitors. After birth, all

moms and babies are transferred to the Mother Baby Unit, where babies remain with their mothers twentyfour hours a day to initiate the bonding process. Mothers will be given the educational tools, confidence, and skills necessary to initiate and maintain successful breastfeeding, which studies have shown to increase bonding and long-term health outcomes for mother and infant.

Oishei Children’s Hospital would be the first of its size in Western New York to achieve Baby-Friendly

status and one of nearly twenty-five hospitals in New York State to earn the title. To date, more than 20,000 facilities worldwide have succeeded in attaining Baby-Friendly status, a number on track to increase. The journey is intended to challenge staff and develop high-performance work teams to build leadership skills, promote employee pride, enhance patient satisfaction, and improve health outcomes.

ECMC Trauma Center: delivering lifesaving care to WNY

I

n 2016, nearly 70,000 Western New Yorkers were treated at the Trauma Center/Emergency Department at Erie County Medical Center. Seventy thousand, in a space that was built forty years ago, slightly upgraded twenty years ago, and designed to accommodate just 45,000 annual patients.

In 2014, an operational assessment indicated that, on average, the existing Emergency Department operated over capacity for twelve hours of each day. And now, working with its Trauma Center/Emergency Department doctors, nurses, and support staff, ECMC has developed a plan to build a new, state-of-the-art facility.

The new Trauma Center/Emergency Department, by CannonDesign, nearly doubles the space to 54,000 square feet, and increases treatment space from thirty-four to fifty-four stations that include dedicated trauma rooms, two behavioral health safe rooms, two isolation rooms, and four medical resuscitation rooms. It features intradepartmental imaging comprising two CT rooms

and two x-ray rooms, direct access from the hospital’s rooftop helipad, and a care initiation zone to support an enhanced triage model. A customized layout created for maximum efficiency will better align with physicians’ and staff ’s workflow, and provide a more patient-oriented space with larger rooms to accommodate patients’ families and the medical services team.

As the region’s busiest and only Level 1 Adult Trauma Center and emergency department, verified nationally by the American College of Surgeons, and serving 1.5 million residents in eight counties, ECMC is answering an imperative to meet current and future demands for appropriate trauma and emergency care.

The Trauma Center/Emergency Department serves patients for trauma, emergency psychiatric conditions via ECMC’s Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP), and traditional medical conditions.

It is the best suited of any of the region’s Emergency Departments to

handle mass casualty, disaster-related circumstances, including specialized rooms for contagious diseases or conditions. It has dedicated rooms with showers for victims of sexual assault, which supports ECMC’s role as a dedicated SAFE center.

ECMC is a leader in establishing trauma care standards, and participates in national, state, and regional trauma quality improvement programs, as well as injury prevention and trauma education programs throughout Western New York.

As one of the first trauma centers in the country, ECMC has long been a leader in treating victims of traumatic injuries. Through research, ECMC’s physicians pioneered trauma care considered today to be the standard; for example, the “crash cart,” used in trauma and emergency departments around the world, was invented at ECMC. ECMC is one of only thirty-four Level 1 Trauma Centers nationally (out of 453 such centers in the

US) that in April 2017 received an ‘A’ patient safety rating from the Leapfrog Group, an independent national not-for-profit organization founded more than a decade ago by the nation’s leading employers and private health care experts. The organization’s annual safety survey includes medical errors, accidents, injuries, infections, and patient experience.

The Trauma Center/Emergency Department’s team of board-certified doctors, nurses, and other specialists makes success stories possible. The specially trained trauma staff includes dedicated registered nurses (RNs) for emergency care, acute care, and rehabilitative care. All Emergency Department and Trauma Intensive Care Unit (TICU) nurses are Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) trained, and also receive specialized training in trauma care.

ECMC’s new Trauma Center/ Emergency Department expands its capacity to provide emergency medical attention, serve as a referral source for other area hospitals to transfer patients that require specialized emergency care, advance ECMC’s engagement and investment in the City of Buffalo’s Delavan-Grider Corridor, and build on ECMC’s growing and dynamic relationship with the Kaleida Health System and University at Buffalo’s Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, which serves as the region’s primary teaching facility for emergency department and trauma medical residents.

Most importantly, ECMC’s new Trauma Center/Emergency Department will maintain and strengthen the clinical capabilities of the nationally recognized Trauma and Emergency Team. The hospital’s Trauma Center/Emergency Department is a gateway to medical expertise, highlighted by its relationships with other hospitals that transfer to ECMC their most critical patients to receive lifesaving trauma/emergency treatment.

Young Adult Cancer: how to avoid misdiagnosis

“You’re too young to get cancer.”

This is a common misconception about people ages fifteen to thirtynine, yet cancer is the number one cause of disease-related death in this age group.

When symptoms arise—such as pain or fatigue—they are often ignored or chalked up to more common ailments. When a twenty-oneyear-old complains of a stomach ache, it’s easy to dismiss. Such errors, made by patients as well as doctors, may cause a high number of misdiagnoses and treatment delays when the cancer is still in the early, most curable stages.

The National Cancer Institute categorizes people in this age group as Adolescents and Young Adults, or AYAs. While cancer is rare and general survival rates are good among AYAs, progress in cancer treatment for this group lags behind

advancements for children and older adults. In fact, AYA’s have the lowest participation rate for clinical trials of new and promising therapies, resulting in poorer outcomes.

This impacts our knowledge about AYAs and how to improve their treatment. AYAs also develop a variety of cancers, respond differently to treatment, and face unique psychosocial needs.

Those between fifteen and twentyfour tend to develop leukemia, lymphoma, germ cell tumors, and thyroid cancers, while those between twenty-five and thirty-nine are more likely to develop breast cancer, cervical cancer, and melanoma. Recognizing symptoms early may lead to a quicker diagnosis and treatment optimization.

Knowledge is power Education and increased awareness about cancer in AYAs are crucial to early detection. It’s important to recognize common cancer warning signs and take action. If you experience any of these symptoms, especially if they don’t go away or they get worse, see a doctor: • An unusual lump or swelling in the neck, breast, belly, testicle, or elsewhere • Unexplained tiredness and loss of energy • Easy bruising • Abnormal bleeding • Ongoing pain in one part of the body • Unexplained fever or illness • Frequent headaches, often with vomiting • Sudden eye or vision changes • Loss of appetite or unplanned weight loss • A new mole or other spot on the skin, or one that changes in size, shape or color Get Screened Because cancer is rare in this age group, screening tests are usually recommended only for people at high risk. However, there are steps that can improve chances of early detection.

Screening for cer vical cancer with Pap tests should start at age twenty-one, regardless of sexual activity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) currently recommends that eleven- and twelveyear-olds receive two doses of HPV vaccine at least six months apart rather than the previously recommended three doses, to protect against cancers caused by human papillomavirus

Self-exams are a great way to spot early signs of cancer. For example, women should perform regular breast self-exams, men should perform regular testicular self-exams, and both men and women should check their skin on a regular basis. This helps you become familiar with your body and increases ability to notice any changes.

During routine physicals, men and women in their twenties and thirties should be checked for cancers of the thyroid, testicles, ovaries, lymph nodes, mouth, throat, and skin.

If cancer runs in your family, you may be at higher risk for such cancers as melanoma, breast, ovarian, colorectal, and thyroid, among others.

Starting at an early age, you will need careful screening. If you’re not sure about your risk level, talk with your doctor to discuss the best options.

Overall, cancer is rare in young adults, but it’s not just an older person’s disease. Get to know your body and reach out to your doctor when something doesn’t seem right. It could save your life.

At Work All Day? How to Incorporate Exercise into Your Life (StatePoint) Leading a sedentary lifestyle can have a serious impact on one’s health. In fact, too much sitting can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease, according to the American Heart Association, which cites a study that showed that adults who watch more than four hours of television daily had a 46 percent increased risk of death and an 80 percent increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Unfortunately, work environments are not always conducive to physical activity, with tight deadlines and long to-do lists often gluing people to their work stations for hours on end.

If you spend a majority of the day at work, here are some great ways to move more during your free time.

Go Beyond Traditional Exercise Becoming active doesn’t necessarily mean limiting yourself to elliptical machines and running laps. Find outlets for exercise that excite you, such as hip-hop dance, yoga or even kickboxing. If you want to add a bit of competition to the mix, long distance races or obstacle courses may be just the motivation you need. Such events can be a great excuse to travel, as they take place all over the world.

Get Active with Co-Workers Many experts agree that leaning on friends and co-workers as exercise partners can help boost motivation. In fact, the exercise habits of people you know have a positive influence on your own routine, according to a study published in “Psychology of Sport and Exercise.” Luckily, there are new and fun ways you can get active as a group.

Squeeze It In Long workdays are just a reality for many. So, find ways to get your blood flowing while you’re working. Set an alarm that reminds you on the hour to move around or stretch. Do your heart and health a favor and get moving. With so many great new forms of exercise and athletic competition available today, spending time outside of work engaged in physical activity is easier than ever before.
