College preparatory This term is used to refer to any school that prepares students for higher education and is simply a means of distinguishing primary school from secondary school.

Regardless of admissions process, enrollment numbers, or religious affiliation, any public, private, independent, or charter school that provides students with the skills they need to move on to higher education can add college prep to its name.

Private While it’s easy to think of private schools as any schools that aren’t public, there are important distinctions. In the simplest terms, private schools are any schools that do not receive financial support and funding from the government. To attend a private school, students or their guardians must pay school tuition.

Independent schools are another branch of the private school tree.

This explains why some schools use both the terms private and independent to distinguish their institution from others. Likewise, some schools may just use one of the terms in their descriptions.

Independent Independent schools offer their students a private education and require tuition to attend. The difference between other private institutions and independent, private institutions is that independent schools are classified as not-for-profit and governed by a board of directors, governors, or trustees. These schools charge tuition to raise money to operate because they are financially independent. An outside corporation, church, or a for-profit entity may financially control other private schools that are non-independent.

Independent schools can also be affiliated with a specific religion, sex, teaching practice, or learning disabilities.

Single-sex Some independent schools admit their students based upon whether they are male or female. Single-sex independent schools may or may not be religiously affiliated or associated with a particular teaching practice or learning disability.

Co-educational On the other hand, some independent schools define themselves as co-educational. Just as this name suggests, co-educational independent schools teach both male and female students. Co-educational, independent schools may or may not be religiously affiliated or associated with a particular teaching practice or learning disability.

Learning difference Learning difference schools aim

Non-denominational After private, independent, and single-sex or co-educational, more distinctions can be made in realm of school terms. Determining whether or not a school is run by or linked to a particular religion is often another important factor in the process of choosing a high school. Some private, independent, all-girls or allboys or co-educational schools are non-denominational. This simply means they are not religiously affiliated. However, that is not always the case.

Catholic Jesuit Jesuit high schools are Catholic college-preparatory schools that may or may not be independent or single-sex. The distinguishing factor between a Jesuit education and other catholic education is that a Jesuit school focuses its curriculum on a specific set of Jesuit principles.

Rooted in the Jesuit tradition, these schools are characterized by their foundation of Catholic education.

Catholic Diocesan Catholic Diocesan schools are the most common Catholic schools.

Catholic high schools are maintained by the Catholic Church and often incorporate Catholic teachings into their curriculum. Most Catholic schools admit students whether they are Catholic or not. A parish governs a Catholic school, and a diocese is simply a defined region under a bishop of the Christian Church. Therefore, Catholic Diocesan Schools are Catholic schools under the care of the bishop in their diocese/region.

chool is about to begin. Here are a few tips to make the transition back to class go smoothly.

Make the first day easier If you have concerns or worries about your child, reach out to the school prior to the first day; ideally, a few weeks before is best. Schools are always eager to hear about children’s specific needs, especially if something has changed in a child’s life.

Many children find that new situations make them nervous or anxious.

Changing schools, teachers, or classrooms for the first time can affect any age child. To minimize fear, visit school with your child prior to the first day, rehearse moving from class to class or any other scenario that’s causing worry. Encourage your child to talk about concerns so you can work together to find coping solutions.

Create a positive atmosphere by encouraging and reassuring children that they will see familiar faces and friends when they get to school. Everyone has apprehension, so emphasize the positive experiences to come. Try to find a friend in the neighborhood with whom your child can go to school or ride the bus.

Summertime is a good time to encourage children to get enough sleep. Getting children on a schooltime sleep schedule a few weeks before school starts will ensure their best productivity even in the first few days back.

Studies show that children who eat good breakfasts do better in school, have enhanced concentration, and are more energetic.

Backpack safety Buy a backpack with padded shoulder straps and a padded back. Remind your child to wear the backpack over both shoulders, as slinging it over one shoulder can strain muscles.

Organize the backpack to use all compartments. Heavier items should go in the center. To further avoid strain, keep contents to a minimum so that the pack is no more than ten to twenty percent of your child’s weight.

Going through the backpack weekly can eliminate unneeded items and maintain proper weight.

Bus safety Make sure your child knows the designated bus stop. Remind your child to make sure the bus has come to a safe stop before attempting to board. The bus driver should signal your child to cross the street or approach the bus when it is safe.

Remind your child, too, to stay seated on the bus, and not cause any distractions for the driver. If your child has any health issues that might affect

riding, such as a seizure disorder, make sure the school nurse prepares for a possible bus emergency prior to the first day. Knowing the policy for food allowed on the bus is important if your child has allergies.

Walking to School Children are generally ready to start walking to school at ten to eleven years old. Avoid having children walk alone and find a safe route with adult crossing guards at busy intersections.

Eating during the school day Studies show that children who eat good breakfasts do better in school, have enhanced concentration, and are more energetic throughout the day.

Make sure your child’s breakfast contains protein.

For lunch, consult the school menu with your child and decide on buylunch and bring-lunch days, being sure to plan well-balanced meals. Tell your child to avoid vending machines and school stores, which sell unhealthy snacks and sugary drinks.

Bullying Bullying—physical, verbal, or virtual—can happen at school, on the bus or playground, in your neighborhood, online or on cellphones. Make sure your child knows to ask for help from an adult if bullying occurs. If your child tells only you, alert school officials and work together on a solution.

W

hile much has changed since stagecoach stop and taver n the Eagle House opened in 1832, Main Street remains an important thoroughfare in the Village of Williamsville. The village’s quaint close-knit community still evokes old-time nostalgia, but it’s grappling with some big city issues.

As Williamsville g rew rapidly in the 1970s, longtime residents like Larry Brenton, who served on the Williamsville Planning Board, couldn’t imagine the concerns Main Street would be causing today.

A resident for more than seventy years, Brenton recalls his parents moving to the Village because they could walk to church, school, and the store. But over the years, as office parks emerged and companies moved their headquarters to the suburbs, the landscape changed.

“It’s saturated by traffic,” says Amherst Town Supervisor and former Williamsville Mayor Brian Kulpa. “The town grew up around it.”

The village itself has lost population since reaching an all-time high of 6,878 people in 1980. According to the 2010 census, there were 5,300 residents in the village with another dip expected in 2020, mostly attributed to parents staying in homes after their children leave. By contrast, the largest town around Williamsville has swelled to a population of about 125,000. With those people come cars. Lots and lots of cars.

Those cars burden a village that encompasses only one-point-two miles and has a limited capacity to keep up with the increased vehicle volume and the resulting infrastructure challenges. “It’s not a village surrounded by greenspace. It’s a village surrounded by density,” says Kulpa. “The buildings keep getting bigger because of the demand.”

As a result, Kulpa is working to implement a Comprehensive Plan created eleven years ago before he was elected Williamsville mayor. One phase already underway is the Picture Main Street project where construction crews are creating a more pedestrian-friendly environment. A $2.5 million federal grant is helping to pay for curb extensions to shorten crossings and improve sightlines for both pedestrians and drivers. In front of the Amherst Library, there will also be a mid-block pedestrianactivated crossing with a hawk signal to prevent jaywalking.

traffic to increase safety on a congested Main Street. “Forty thousand cars a day,” says Williamsville Mayor Dan DeLano, who is hopeful the current construction project and lane closures on Main Street are encouraging drivers to find permanent alternate routes.

Heavy traffic only hurts businesses, he adds: “It’s so jammed up, drivers don’t have time to even notice what’s there, and it makes it tough to park.” That’s why most businesses on Main Street are willing to suffer through construction that is expected to continue through late October.

“Updates and improvements are necessary in the village,” says Tricia Hanny Browne, owner of the Eagle House restaurant. “It will be worth it in the end. Something to be proud of.”

Other efforts to ease traffic may prove to be more difficult. Kulpa seeks federal highway funds to add a Youngs Road Thruway Interchange near Erie County Community College North Campus. It would help the Town of Amherst from a commerce perspective by redirecting commuters from Main Street to I-90.

“The way the Thruway Interchanges are set up now, drivers in Amherst either must backtrack to the Clarence entrance or head down Main Street to reach the Thruway,” says A.J. Baynes, President/CEO of the Amherst Chamber of Commerce, who included support for the Youngs Road Interchange in the Chamber’s 2018 Public Policy Agenda. “When you have thousands of town residents forced to

make that choice, even if half used the new Interchange, it would make a world of difference in Williamsville.”

Another deterrent to choosing the Clarence Thruway entrance is the cost and congestion associated with the Williamsville toll barrier. That’s why Baynes and Kulpa also support changes there. While removing the toll booth altogether is the first choice, converting it into cashless tolling would be helpful, too.

Kulpa estimates that some 3,300 cars would reroute off Main Street and take the Thruway in Clarence with improved traffic flow from the cashless tolls. He hopes the New York State Thruway Authority will follow through with its commitment to convert the Thruway system from Williamsville to Albany to cashless tolling by the end of 2020.
