Re-reading the label

E

verything in that Harper’s Bazaar message was news to me. For starters, I always expect to see more clothes on models during the fall/winter runways, so I was a bit surprised to read that piling it on from October through April was now a thing, a political statement. Around here, we just call them snowpants. Then there was the use of the word “post” with the phrase “Time’sUp.” I had no idea. Who knew that when it came to #MeToo and #TimesUp, everything was all tidy, all done, no more. And I cannot begin to wonder what was meant by the words “designers experimented with female sexuality.” I never got the memo advising that designers had been granted that agency. At least I don’t remember signing a permission slip giving away that right, not to Tom Ford, not to Alexander Wang, not to anyone.

But I suspect that no part of that message would have stuck with me this hard, no rant would have begun percolating in the part of my brain that until now I thought was exclusively reserved for shoe shopping had it not been for the label “Modesty Dressing.” To tie Modesty Dressing to the #MeToo movement like this is what lawyers call blaming the victim.

It suggests that we women have been dressing too provocatively to be taken seriously. And so, with the hopes of finally getting that pay raise and front office respect, we have decided to cover ourselves with double-breasted men’s wear, balaclava snoods, and horse blankets all at once. Or, I guess I should say that the designers have made that decision for us.

Breathe in. Breathe out. Slowly.

I’m going to put a pin in that for a second and move on to what else is on the fashion scene this season. For the record, “what else” is everything. Seriously. Everything goes, which means that this can be either be your craziest year yet for managing trends or it may be the easiest season for sticking with your passions.

This season, it might be actually impossible to do anything wrong. There are long skirts,

as usual, and short skirts. There are necklines to the ears; there are metallic tube tops. There are animal prints to match any stuffed plush toy you ever hugged. The same with fabric piles: lots and lots of ultra softs.

There is also plastic (again) and sci-fi and post-apocalyptic biker street gang chic. You can, if you so choose, gently explore your life lived in gloss or tweed or silks or pleats, or—if you have the energy—you can shoot for the moon and dress in gloss and tweed and silk and pleats. You might notice the risk of redundancy if you opt to choose all three of the separately tagged cowboy, leather, and luxury fringing trends, but that’s all right.

There is overlap everywhere, along with Robin Hooding and Maid Marian draping (circa Olivia de Havilland, not Disney, btw), and do not under any circumstance pass up trying on a Marc Jacobs planter hat or Sadie Williams turban or anything by Choi.

There are more wraps than ever, and capes. The drama and inefficiency of capes! If the mood so strikes, embrace a rebel look, a look that leans more Amy Winehouse than tight tees and threadbare denim, and anything Amy Winehouse completes the circle

back to animal prints—faux leopard to be precise.

Winehouse’s memory also provides the backdrop for the bedhead bouffant, which is only one trending option along with slick-backed side part, flowy side part, and uplifting ’fro knots. There are opportunities for Super Lashes (as in extensions) and Super Lips (as in red), and when it comes to decorating your fingernails, you can go matte or find a high gloss to match your favorite wine. Ask your manicurist to spell a message on your nails or embellish with jewelry. Try a reverse French, an animal print, or request a tip that is punctured. “Just the nail, right?” my husband asks. Yes. For now. Just the nail. The only time my body physically reacted to a trend alert

What and who is trending Thrift Store Shopping. With so much focus on the ‘70s this winter, train yourself (if you haven’t already) to learn the thrift shop landscape. Type in “MaryElizabeth 31 Best Thrift Store Tips” into the YouTube search bar. It is a fun one, and helpful. At times Mary may offer TMI (too much info) in a California way, but her voice is easy to listen to, in that California way.

Find Styles from Another Place. Chimanda Adichie is full on inspiring in her “Wear Nigerian” approach to life.

She is all beauty and energy, and offers up a few rules on what hues and prints work to compliment a wide range of skin tones. Look for Chimamanda_adichie on Instagram or Chimanda Ngozi Adichie on Facebook.

Beauty Talk. Tennessee born Huda Kattan is a force for beauty on YouTube. Even the name of her page comes together, with HudaBeauty.com.

Funny Beauty. Jenna Marbles is the stage name of a blogger, comedian, and actress, and her sincere efforts to follow beauty instruction videos makes me laugh out loud. Google ‘I tried Following A James Charles Makeup Tutorial’ on YouTube. Grab a cup of coffee first.

Runway at Any Age. Check out the Instagrams of IconAccidental, StyleAtACertainAge, BagAndABaret, and StyleCrone (capitals not needed, but they all are one word!), and maybe you can be inspired to strut your own sartorial self around, take photos, and share with the world.

Vogue insists that the dark sculpted brow is going away, or at least mostly away because we are being urged to retreat to the very old-school, very skinny, single line arch. It looks good on Rihanna, who graced the September cover of Vogue UK, but what doesn’t look good on Rihanna?

OK, back to the Modesty Dressing phenomenon, the most headline grabbing of all trends. There is nothing new about the idea of using clothes to cover up the body beyond the dictates of climate and work safety. But the explosiveness of the trend has been linked to fashion industry’s interest in catering to the large fundamentally religious markets. This type of dressing is all around me here in Sweden, where many Muslim women choose to wear a hajib to cover the top of the head and the hair, with a drape around the neck. Sometimes the rest of the outfit is Western wear, sometimes women wear a jilbab, a flowing robe that cover arms and legs. I always study the look. I cannot help it. It is what I do with style. I am impressed by the folding, amazed by the face artistry, curious about fabric selection.

I am 100 percent intrigued. These clothing traditions exist in American communities as well, along with others like those of the Amish, the Mennonite, the Mormons, and the Hasids.

Want to see how big and how wonderful? Then google Halima Aden, the trending Somali-American-Minnasotan model and be prepared to become a fan. Nike adores her. So do I. But I also see the burqa here, too, the full head-to-toe drape that allows no part of the face to show, or the niqab, the full drape with an allowance for the eyes. To these vestments I have a different reaction. Even if the burqa is in a dusty pink or soft blue or

a warm golden yellow, its existence makes me sad. I feel that I need to do something to help, to at least free the face.

People should be allowed to have a mouth. But I do nothing. “It is their own decision,” I am told. “Respect their choice.” But I cannot respect it as a choice because I am unable to view it as one. It is the way it is because someone said it must be so, and the woman—that woman under there—is not in a position to change things. Whenever I see a body moving beneath a burqa, a heaviness descends and covers my soul. But my sorrow is not just for her. I always worry about what message the presence of the burqa sends to the little girls around me. How do little girls interpret a woman without a face?

Anyone reading me over the years knows that I come down on the pro side of Spandex. I am a sucker for a fitted bodice and vintage fifties. But I also adore oversized sweaters and long plaid skirts and any tunic in pale yellow and silk. The right wool blend can melt my soul. I put on a stuffy old suit, and energy courses through my veins. If I’m in a zipper jacket and jeans, don’t let me catch you bad mouthing a barista. But then again Laurel Canyon Hippy and Brooklyn Chill are turning into my new antidotes for life, and not because I want to hide my curves under wide pants and long sleeves, not because I wish to protect myself from unwanted advances. It is because I can feel the flow. There is a magic to the tactile experience of gentle fabrics. Cotton can be my posse. The same is true of cozy.

Long live Eileen Fisher. It isn’t about whether on any particular day I feel modest or immodest, slutty or prim. My life is not bifurcated that way. And although I use labels all the time, I hope I can learn to avoid affixing them in a manner that leads to the “good girl/bad girl” trap. Better to be specific. Call a favorite style “Soft” or “Comfort” or “Confused by Coffee.”

Call it “Out for a Walk Under Orange and Red Leaves,” “Home by the Fire with a Brand New Book,” or “Ooohhh, I’m Asking for a Raise Today.” A description like this may not carry as big of a marketing bang, but at least the words may carry less baggage, are less inclined to suggest, “If you aren’t with me, you’re against me!” or “It’s all our fault, girls!”

Is the appropriate reaction to being sexually harassed, not respected, not considered smart enough or brave enough or serious enough or male enough, that fashion offers a design trend that sends us all into hiding again? No. I do not think that was the intent. I think the intent was to reach an untapped market. The intent was sales. Now the “Modesty” moniker is out there, blowing up, but it is never too late to reflect on how intentions can be misinterpreted or repurposed, diluted or hijacked. The outfits we choose for comfort, for business, for environmental protection, for theatrics, for solitude, for deep dives and long excursions, for therapy, and for happiness, we do not need to be so quick to label them. Better we take the time to enjoy our clothing and ourselves, and in the meantime, never stop looking for ways to respect and protect each other, even when told it is impossible. Share your insight. (I sure could use the help.) Words have power, and so do we.

You said “yes”! Now what? Guest list, venue, fall or summer—with so many decisions to make, planning a wedding can be overwhelming. Fear not! Here are some tips and tricks to get you started.

The Internet is your friend. Start a few Pinterest boards, maybe save some style ideas on Instagram. Soon enough, a pattern will emerge and clear direction is not far behind. You don’t have to make all your decisions right now; it’s okay to change your mind as the planning process develops.

Start with a budget, which will help you make better decisions.

Then hire a professional! We might be biased, but insider information and professional assistance navigating choices will save time, money, and probably your sanity. There are planners, coordinators, and designers to fit most budgets and we firmly believe that the professional help will pay for itself in the end.

Prioritize. Do you dream of lush florals? Do textured linens make your heart skip a beat? Have you been swooning over a photographer’s work online? Is it imperative that menu be crafted to impress? Make a list of what matters and allocate your budget accordingly.

Ask friends for vendor referrals.

Research your vendors! Ask for testimonials, which reputable vendors can provide without issue. If they can’t, it’s a red flag.

Narrow your choices. Once you have a vision of what you want, narrow to three vendors who match it. Connect with them to see if you mesh, compare pricing and availability, and you should find your best fit.

Let your personalities shine!

Make your event personal and unique by incorporating things that make you and your fiancé who you are, separately and as a couple.

Choosing hair and makeup professionals who hew closely to your everyday look. You want them to enhance your beauty, not make you look like someone else.

Be absolutely upfront and honest with all your vendors. If you don’t like something, speak up! We work for you and will do everything in our power to make you happy.

Don’t try to be superhuman. If you are not able to hire a professional to assist with planning, delegate.

Trying to do it all yourself will keep you from enjoying the journey. And don’t forget about your fiancé! It’s easy to lose sight of one another in the midst of planning, color swatches, menus, glassware selections, venue layouts. Check in with them and breathe a little. Retiring well

Retirement used to mean getting a gold watch and a decent pension after spending decades at the same company. Hardly anyone would recognize that definition today.

Pensions have become rare, and many retirees are not as financially set as they would like to be. Study after study tells us that baby boomers do not have enough saved to live the retirement lifestyle they imagined. Worrying about how to pay for necessities, let alone niceties, can

overshadow thoughts about how to fill free time.

Preparation is key. Even if you think retirement is a long way off, seek advice from a qualified financial adviser. He or she can help you decide how long you need to work, and what you need to save to afford an enjoyable retirement. “You should be sitting down with a financial planner around the time you are thirtyfive or forty years old,” says Certified Financial Planner Robert Vogel. “You

can put together a game plan that will work for you, depending on your life style.

“If you start saving right out of college, the compounding effect for an additional ten, twenty, thirty, or forty years gives you astronomical returns,” Vogel continues. “If your employer offers a co-sponsored retirement plan, enroll. Most 401K plans offer a dollar-for-dollar match for the first few percent of your contributions. Minimally, one wants to OCTOBER 2018

contribute that percentage to receive the employer match. It’s free money!”

Once you have a realistic picture of how financially stable you are, you can start thinking about how you are going to fill your time. Somewhere long ago, a man retired and his wife declared, “I married him for better or for worse. But not for lunch.”

Laugh if you must, but if a woman chose to be a homemaker, or left the work force before her husband did, she probably staked out her turf at home. She has a routine that an athome husband can quickly upset. Or perhaps the husband retired first, or one or the other has been working out of the home. Before either spouse retires, there should be conversations about each spouse’s expectations and how realistic those expectations are.

She may want to spend four weeks in Europe every six months, while he has visions of finally getting that puppy they always talked about. It’s best to talk it out way before she rents a cute little loft in Paris while he is spreading newspapers on the floor.

Some people are happiest working.

They may think they want to put their feet up and do nothing, but the feeling doesn’t last. Boredom, feeling useless, or wanting extra cash can drive a retiree back into the workforce.

This may be the time to start a second career or engage in part-time work. The guy driving the courtesy shuttle or the lady helping at the bookstore might be a retired executive who enjoys getting out of the house. After years of climbing the corporate ladder, a low-stress job may

be the perfect fit.

You may have the great American novel waiting to be written, or the urge to perfect your tango. If not now, then when? When you were busy working, raising a family, and doing the myriad things daily life demands, there probably wasn’t time. Consider past passions and see if they still call to you. Take a class. Explore. If you are searching for things to do, check with your local senior center. Go for lunch, stay for Mahjonng or piano lessons.

Volunteering is a great way to be active while benefiting others. It also can provide opportunity to use skills acquired during working years or try something entirely different. If one thing doesn’t work, try another.

upkeep of your home may become too much to handle. Decluttering and moving to a smaller home or apartment can simplify living. Communities for residents age fifty-five, with amenities like libraries, pools, gyms, and community rooms are an easier living alternative to constant home maintenance.

Keeping two homes—one local, one in a warmer climate—can be the best of both worlds until years of going back and forth gets to be too much because of finances, age, or health. Often family, especially grandchildren, becomes the deciding factor in which home to live in year-round.

There seem to be two kinds of grandparents: those who babysit every chance they get and those who refuse to watch little ones save for rare occasions. For involved grandparents, retirement can be a wonderful opportunity to connect.

“When my twins entered their teens, I transitioned from being a stay-athome mom to a full-time educational administrator,” says Therese Ketterer of Williamsville. “Two months into my retirement, our granddaughter was born. I volunteered to babysit so both of her parents could continue working without the expense of day care.

It has been a most incredible and satisfying experience to return to caring for a child. Recently, another grandchild was born, and the older one will be off to school. I am delighted to be a full-time, stay-at-home grandma in my retirement years!”

With grandparents more active than ever, they’re also sharing their interests with the little ones. Grandma may be leading a yoga class while grandpa carpools to hockey practice.

Unfortunately, the best-laid plans can go awry. Just when you are ready to enjoy “me time,” an elderly parent, or your spouse, may fall ill. An illness that lasts many years can drain financial, emotional, and physical resources. This is also something worth preparing for by talking to your financial advisor about long-term care insurance that can help with assisted living or nursing needs.

Five Cancers Women Must Be Vigilant About For Woman’s Health Month, we asked some of Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center’s doctors who specialize in cancers that affect women to share tips for preventing or treating cancer. Here’s what they offered.

BREAST CANCER Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women. Most women who are diagnosed with breast cancer do not actually have a family history of breast cancer. “Since 1990, the death rate from breast cancer has decreased,” says Ermelinda Bonaccio, MD, Clinical Chief, Breast Imaging Section of Diagnostic Radiology at Roswell Park. “This has been due to both early detection and improved treatments,” she adds. According to Bonaccio, mammography is currently the only test that has been proven to decrease the risk of dying from breast cancer. “It is crucial for women forty years and older to get a mammogram every year,” she says. “A woman with certain risk factors may need to start at a younger age, but only after consultation with her physician.”

COLORECTAL CANCER Steven Hochwald, MD, FACS, Vice Chair and Chief of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Roswell Park, treats men and women facing colorectal cancer each day at Roswell Park. He says that eating a high-fat diet (especially from animal sources), being overweight, smoking and being inactive are the biggest risk factors. “Colorectal cancer is one of the few cancers where we have fairly accurate ways to see early signs,” said Dr. Hochwald. “If pre-cancerous polyps are found and removed, we can prevent it. But why wait for polyps?

Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables and stop polyps before they can start.”

ENDOMETRIAL CANCER Endometrial cancer, or cancer of the lining of the uterus, occurs mostly in women age fifty and older. Stacey Akers, MD, of Roswell Park’s Department of Gynecologic Oncology, advises women that while the Pap test is used for screening for cancer of the cervix, it is not a test for to screen for endometrial cancer. “Watch for signs like unusual spotting or bleeding not related to menstrual periods and bleeding after menopause, and if this happens, tell your doctor immediately,” she cautions.

Detection Program and an expert in smoking cessation, says that although lung cancer kills more men and women than any other cancer, it is also often preventable. “Smoking is an extremely difficult addiction to quit, but quitting is the most important health behavior change that a person can make,” said Mahoney. “The best advice is never to start, but if you smoke, get help from your clinician or the New York State Smoker’s Quitline. If you have loved ones or friends still smoking, keep encouraging them to quit.”

OVARIAN CANCER Ovarian cancer has often been called the silent killer because its symptoms often go unrecognized or are attributed to something else. But according to Peter Frederick, MD, Associate Professor of Oncology at Roswell Park, there are ways women can increase their chances of having the disease diagnosed earlier. “We hope one day that we will have an effective screening test for ovarian cancer, but until then, women must pay close attention to the signals their body gives them. Persistent symptoms (more than twelve days in a thirtyday period) such as pelvic or abdominal pain, bloating, loss of appetite, or changes in bowel or urination habits are warning signs that should be reported as soon as possible.”
