hen spring sun and warmer temperatures beckon, Buffalonians are outside biking, hiking, gardening, or hitting their decks.

We’re eager to trade our parkas and boots for tank tops and flip flops, forget about winter and focus on fairweather fun.

Before you head out for an adventure along Buffalo’s waterfront or at one of our great local parks, take steps to protect your skin. Follow the American Cancer Society’s sun protection advice: “Slip, slop, slap, and wrap!” (“How Do I Protect Myself From UV Rays?,” cancer.org). By that, the experts mean slip on clothing that covers your skin; slop on plenty of high-SPF sunscreen (even if you have darker skin); slap on a widebrimmed hat that covers your scalp, face, neck, and ears; and wear “wraparound” sunglasses that protect not only your eyes, but the delicate skin around them. Protect your children and pets the same way.

According to the American Skin

Association, UVB and UVA rays are both harmful, and the damage they do can be fatal. “UVB rays affect the genetic material of the epidermis, which causes the damage that may lead to skin cancer. Other UVB rays can affect the immune system and interfere with the skin’s ability to repair itself. [They also] damage the DNA of the pigment cells,” says americanskin.org, (“Sun Safety”).

“This kind of genetic damage causes both freckling and the mottled brown of age spots. More seriously, it contributes to the development of melanoma and other skin cancers.”

UVA rays affect the DNA of skin cells, “attacking cell membranes, and changing the proteins that make up collagen and elastin, which support the skin’s fibrous structure [which leads] directly to wrinkles and sagging of the skin. They also contribute to the loss of support for the skin’s tiny blood vessels, which become permanently dilated” (americanskin.org).

This results in visible spider veins,

changes in skin color and texture, and—you guessed it—increased risk for skin cancer. If you think you’ve suffered sun damage, see your dermatologist.

As if sun exposure weren’t enough of a warm weather skin concern, insects and poisonous plants can also wreak havoc. Avoiding stinging and biting insects seems like a no-brainer, but it’s not always easy. Wear good insect repellant when camping, hiking, or spending time in the backyard, and remember long pants and high boots in woods or high grass, to protect from ticks and the Lyme disease they may carry. Don’t allow standing water to accumulate near your home, as mosquitoes love to breed there. Check eaves and overhangs for signs of wasp and hornet nests, and, if you think you have a problem, contact a professional. If it’s you versus an angry swarm, the angry swarm will win, and enough embedded stingers will land anyone in an emergency room.

new vegetation sprouting up all over Western New York is that some can harm you. The New York State Department of Transportation keeps a long list of dangerous plants, with photos, on its website at dot.ny.gov.

The “classics,” like poison ivy and poison sumac, are on there, but so are others that are even more scary, like giant hogweed and cow parsnip. Both look like giant versions of Queen Anne’s lace with hairy stems, and are often found growing along banks and roadsides. Giant hogweed sap “contains a phototoxin that causes skin to be sensitive to sunlight. Sap can produce painful, burning blisters within 24 to 48 hours after contact as well as red blotches that can develop into scars that persist for several years,” claims the DOT. Cow parsnip also contains a phototoxin that causes similar results. Other skin irritants are wild parsnip and stinging nettle.

Before you start even a small project, like removing weeds and brush from a corner of your yard, know what these toxic plants look like. If you think you’re dealing with giant hogweed or cow parsnip, call a professional. If you are removing poison ivy or poison sumac, wear protective eyewear, gloves, long sleeves, and long pants. Gloves should be rubber

coated; harmful oils can seep through cloth. Never burn these weeds, as the smoke produced is dangerous to breathe in. Be on the lookout for these pain-causing plants when tromping through woods or hiking along trails; they aren’t picky, and can sprout up even in well-populated places.

Spring and summer in Western New York can be full of beach days, pool parties, camping trips, and backyard barbeques, but you won’t have any fun if you’re covered in a painful rash or sunburned nape to knee.

Think ahead, protect your skin, and remember to keep yourself hydrated. Now grab your sunscreen and get some fresh air!

knowledge in minimizing the use of pesticides, attracting pollinators, and supporting wildlife through plant choice. “To increase the pollinator population in Lewiston, Eastern Monarch Butterfly will release butterflies in Hennepin Park to kick off the festival on Saturday, June 16 at 10 a.m.,” Albee says. “Many plants that support pollinators can be found at GardenFest.”

Warmer weather can mean drier weather, and when water conservation is the subject of regional and national conversations, irrigation systems aren’t far behind. Next up June 29-July 1 is the Summer Music Festival, featuring the Rusted Root, Dennis DeYoung, the Music of STYX, and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, all performing slopeside at Holiday Valley.

On July 27-29, music of the annual Jazz and Blues Weekend fills the village. The 2017 weekend featured fifteen bands spread over eight indoor and outdoor venues. Saturday and Sunday afternoons will feature big bands at the Winery of Ellicottville’s main stage. Once again, the price is right: free.

In keeping with the mindset of nonstop fun, August puts the focus on food. The weekend of August 11-12, the annual Taste of Ellicottville features our fabulous restaurants set up café-style in our historic business district. Get tickets for a dollar a piece and enjoy samplings from places that get your nose tingling and your mouth watering; no item is more than five tickets. The successful and exciting Ellicottville Chopped Competition and cooking demonstration, which made its debut in 2017, is back for 2018, and will be bigger and better.
