uring this in-likea-lion, out-like-a-lamb month, the world awakens. Those first brave flowers—snowdrops—push their heads up, and parents see the light at the end of winter’s long tunnel. With so much to do in Western New York, those cooped-up kids will soon be awhirl in activity, with no time left to mumble “I’m bored.”

No matter the weather, the atmosphere is bright at the Explore & More Children’s Museum (exploreandmore.org), and varied programming ensures visitors never have the same experience twice. “This spring and summer, Explore & More will be focused on what we do best and exclusively—cultures. April 10-14, we will ‘Travel the World Around Buffalo’ for our Family Fun Activity Week during the school break,” says Marketing & Public Relations Director Jennifer Fee. “The museum will be open each day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with special activities exploring food, games, arts, language, traditions, and cultures of a different country each day.”

The Wednesday WOW programs and summer activities at Canalside continue this year, with new exhibits and expanded programming, says Fee. Also, Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation is set to break ground on the new Explore & More building at Canalside. “We are on track to open there at the end of 2018,” Fee shares.

Buffalo Seminary (buffaloseminary.org) is gearing up for a big season, too, with Summer at SEM for girls entering grades five through eight, SEM All to Themselves (grades five and six), sports activities, field trips, and more. “For the second summer, a coding class for campers to get know and program GHERTY and Pawlette, our robots,” says Erin

St. John Kelly, director of communications. “It was sold out last summer.

STEAM is particularly well suited to a single-sex environment, since middle school is when girls traditionally begin their descent in grades and interest in math and science, which studies have shown can be stemmed by learning in an all-girls environment.”

For kids with energy to spare, there’s Royal City Soccer Club. “Our full-day program offers a mix of activities for campers with a soccer focus in the morning, and various camp games along with an optional leisure swim in the afternoons,” says permit manager Jaime Drohan. “Campers are welcome to attend for morning

only sessions, afternoon only sessions, or enjoy full days for one, or multiple weeks with us. Every week has a different theme that we tailor to different drills, games, and activities, to ensure that campers continue to love our programming and want to attend for multiple weeks during the summer.”

At Nardin Academy, the new multipurpose athletic facility is up and running, with an indoor turf field and four international squash courts. But that’s not the only excitement on campus: “This summer, Nardin Academy will be offering an Experience Nardin Summer Camp, a new dynamic interactive experience for girls in grades six through eight. This two-week camp begins July 10,” says director of strategic marketing and communications Alexandra Tramposch. “Nardin

Elementary continues to offer exciting summer camp options such as Wilderness Explorers and Lego Camp. The popular Montessori Summer Camp, an exciting, hands-on experience at the Nardin Montessori Oishei Campus, will be returning this summer, as well.”

For children pre-K through eighth grade, the Park School of Buffalo also has a full summer slate, with enrichment classes for kids in the arts, academics, sports, and tech. “It’s easy for kids to find their niche,” says Marnie Cerrato, director of enrollment management, but for those who want to explore it all, the sky’s the limit. “The schedule for the summer includes our sports camps, followed by our traditional six-week summer day camp— now in its eighty-second year—then specialized one-week camps. The Buffalo Equestrian Center (buffaloequestriancenter.org, thebtrc. org) offers not only a great summer camp, but also riding lessons for different skill levels, instructional clinics, and birthday parties. At camp, participants learn about grooming, horse care, barn management, and more.

“A special ‘Campers Horse Show’ will be held at the end of the summer and is available to all campers,” states the center’s website. “Children must be between six and thirteen years of age and each session is limited to twenty children.”

At the center’s sister facility, the Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center, kids with disabilities can experience the bond between horses and people. “Research has shown that therapeutic riding programs offer physical, psychological, social and educational benefits to special students,” says the website. “The riders themselves show the benefits through their smiles, determination, and their sense of accomplishment.”

Another summer option for riders six and up is Skibbereen Farm (skibbereenfarm.com), which offers summer camp in addition to riding lessons. “Summer Camp offers

campers the opportunity to learn how to care for horses, ride properly and make new friends—both two-legged and four-legged,” says the website.

If children need to move to the beat, American Academy of Ballet (AAB, aab-buffalo.com) has five studios and plenty of options for summer fun. director Maris Battaglia says AAB Princess Camp, which is five weeks of tea parties and dancing for children ages four to eight, is always a hit. Summer classes are available for dancers ages three and older (including adults); beginners of all ages are welcome. In August, AAB will hold its Summer Intensive, when wellknown guest teachers wow the students and teach them the tips, tricks, and twirls of the trade. Visit website for info and alumni profiles.

While families are living it up, parents should dress children in protective gear appropriate to their activities.

Beach day? Sunblock. Camping?

Insect repellant. Screen time? Not so obvious. Too much screen time can lead to eyestrain, but Joe and Dan Hogenkamp, of Hogenkamp Optics (hogenkampoptics.com), say there’s a way to keep kids safe, regardless of hours spent on the computer.

s the adage goes, “you are what you eat.” From having our parents bribe us to eat our vegetables in our youth to having doctors and healthcare providers stress healthy diet in our adulthood, the importance of proper nutrition has long been ingrained in each of us.

But, just what is proper nutrition, and why does it matter to our overall health?

A balanced diet ensures our bodies receive all of the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients it needs. Most people understand that a healthy diet, coupled with regular exercise, is essential to the maintenance of proper body weight, and preventing obesity. While this important correlation between diet and weight cannot be understated, the

benefits of healthy nutrition go far beyond our waist sizes.

A well balanced diet can reduce the risk of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. It can also help you to lower cholesterol, reduce blood pressure, ensure proper gastrointestinal health, increase overall energy levels, and improve your immune system.

Given these benefits are reversed when we make poor nutritional choices, it is essential to gain an understanding of just what constitutes a good and bad dietary choice especially in today’s changing food industry, where it can be difficult to determine just what truly constitutes healthy and unhealthy.

For instance, the advent of the modern western diet has

introduced a broadening variety of processed foods on the market. The term “processed” often has negative connotations. However, not all processed foods are created equal. While some, such as frozen fruits and vegetables or canned tomatoes are generally processed at their peak to lock in their nutritional value, others, such as crackers, frozen pizza, and ready to eat frozen meals are highly processed with many chemical additives and minimal nutritional value. Some food processing is beneficial, such as the addition of calcium and vitamin D to milk or the addition of fiber to breakfast cereals, which fortifies nutritional benefit.

However, in other cases, processing can be detrimental. High amounts of sodium are often added to canned soups, vegetables, and beans. In fact, it is estimated three quarters of American’s sodium intake comes from processed foods, a particular problem for those with high blood pressure.

Likewise, the growing use of added sugars in processed foods has played a significant role in the rising rates of diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. Sometimes, even “healthy” foods are affected. For instance, whole wheat breads, jarred pasta sauce, and even the healthiest of breakfast cereals often have added sugars. Many times, these added sugars are hidden and difficult for the average consumer to find, listed under names such as maltose, corn syrup, fruit juice concentrate, honey, and many others, which do not overtly indicate to the consumer just what they truly are.

So, how can the average consumer ensure they are avoiding all of these pitfalls and providing themselves and their families with properly balanced nutrition? Obviously, everyone knows a diet centered on fast food and potato chips is not the right approach, but how can we make healthy choices in the supermarket aisle with so much confusion over what is and isn’t healthy?

The basic tenet to follow is to eat fresh when possible and to prepare your meals with minimally processed ingredients. Get plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, ideally in their whole versions when possible, not in juices or canned. Try to eat lean meats and obtain protein from different sources, such as fish and beans. Avoid prepared frozen meals, and treat eating out as just that, a treat, rather than a regular occurrence. Most important, read food labels. Avoid those products that are exorbitantly high in sugar and saturated fats. Keep in mind

that not all fats are bad, and unsaturated fats found in items such as olive oil and nuts can be beneficial to your overall health. Try to ensure the grain products you buy are whole grains, thus avoiding highly refined carbohydrates such as white pastas and breads, which lack nutritional benefits while still containing a high carbohydrate load.

Of course, no matter how hard we try, our busy lifestyles don’t always allow us to eat a diet that contains every nutrient, vitamin, and mineral we need. To fill the void, quality

dietary supplements can play a vital role in healthy nutritional balance.

There are many options within the dietary supplement arena. Multivitamins can act as a well-rounded “safety net,” filling in the blanks for any vitamins and minerals we may not get from our food choices. Additionally, more specific supplementations such as calcium, vitamin D, B vitamins, iron, omega-3’s, and many others, can help to fill the gap for known deficiencies.

the nutrient, greatly affects overall benefit. For instance, some lower quality supplements select poorly absorbed forms of vitamins and nutrients as a cost saving measure, thus not allowing your body to utilize the supplement properly. Calcium carbonate, a very poorly absorbed form of calcium, is often used instead of better absorbed forms such as calcium malate. Likewise, for magnesium, the citrate salt form may be used instead of the better absorbed magnesium glycinate. Another example is omega-3 supplement labeling, which can be misleading, as some lower quality brands include inactive, poorly utilized omega-3s in the overall labeled concentration.

Additionally, it is important that the supplement undergoes proper quality control measures, such as purity and potency testing, which ensures you are receiving proper dosages, and eliminates the risk of impurities.

Stores that specialize in vitamin supplements and do proper vetting of their suppliers, such as Pine Pharmacy in Williamsville, are great resources for the common consumer trying to determine what constitutes a quality supplement.

While all of this can seem quite daunting, the importance cannot be understated. What we put into our bodies determines our overall health more so than any other factor. Take the time to understand your healthy options.
