Likewise, adequate exercise is vital to improving heart health, and can reduce risk of heart attack and stroke.

While it can seem daunting, regular exercise does not mean becoming marathon runners or champion weight lifters (although kudos if you

do). Walking, jogging, swimming, and biking are just a few options accessible to everyone. Thirty minutes of moderate exercise five times per week, or twenty-five minutes of vigorous exercise three times per week, is adequate to provide cardiac benefits. Twice-weekly weight-bearing exercise offers additional health benefits, including combating loss of lean muscle mass and improved bone density.

While these lifestyle changes are great prevention, many of us have or will develop underlying health conditions, despite our best efforts.

Unfortunately, men often bury their heads in the sand and ignore the signs and symptoms when they present themselves, which often makes things worse. It’s important to treat conditions as they present, to both improve health and to prevent a worse situation.

Hear t problems are common among men. Blood pressure and cholesterol are often elevated, especially when diet and exercise are less than adequate. As previously mentioned, improving those can go a long way, but, when they don’t, further action is necessary. There are many medications to treat these conditions, and millions of Americans use drugs like “statins” to improve heart health.

What sometimes isn’t as well understood is that some people like to try nutritional options first, and save medication as a last resort. For instance, supplements such as omega-3s, omega-7s, red yeast rice, and niacin can improve cholesterol and triglyceride profiles, and supplements like arginine may relax blood vessels, potentially lowering blood pressure.

Improving these parameters is vital to decreasing the likelihood of heart attack and stroke.

In addition to heart concerns, men are recently concerned with symptoms of declining testosterone, which can cause fatigue, decreased strength, and decline in cognition and libido.

As a result, testosterone replacement therapy has risen, and is often successful. Unfortunately, commercially available testosterone replacement prescriptions come with a significant price tag. These supplements often include tribulus, chrysin, diindolylmethane, and other ingredients that promote healthy testosterone metabolism and function.

Even more specific to men, enlarged prostate can lead to changes in urinary frequency and urgency,

as well as declining ease of urination. Often, these issues are treated with medications to control prostate growth, thus easing the flow of urine.

Additionally, nutritional supplements with items such as saw palmetto and nettle complexes may improve minor symptoms with a more natural approach.

Finally, we’ve all seen commercials

for medications to treat erectile dysfunction. While this condition can be embarrassing, it’s common, and, given the significant toll it can take on social and mental health, it need not be ignored. The pills we see in the commercials work effectively and easily for many men; however, they are often expensive or not covered by insurance. When price is an issue, there are generic equivalents available for a fraction of the cost. For those who don’t respond to these, doctors sometimes prescribe custom injectable mixtures, commonly referred to as “tri-mix,” which often work with great success.
