Resources will welcome its first public visitors in less than a year. The new facility will spread across 43,000 square feet, delighting visitors who have seen the current 5,000-square-foot space. $4.6 million still needs to be raised to close the capital campaign, which receives matching funds through the generosity of the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation grant.

Jeannine Weber Kahabka, director of marketing and public relations, says that the building itself will be completed by December, and then exhibits will start to move in. “We will have four floors of exhibit space, so that will take a while!” she says. “Then, there will be a soft opening in January, February, and March, with our grand opening for the public in April. We’re all so excited. We’re in a hurry to get there and get started!” Weber Kahabka and her colleagues expect 250,000 guests in the first year, with more to come.

“The museum will feature seven main educational play zones, which offer hands-on exhibits to tell the story of Buffalo,” shares Weber Kahabka. “The exhibits are all about us—our waterways, community, innovations, heritage, industry, architecture, agriculture, and the many ways we have fun!”

Main exhibits will include “Moving Water,” celebrating Buffalo’s waterways and rich history as a booming port town; “Being Good Neighbors,”

to teach children that we don’t take nicknames lightly; “Playing Together,” because we need to teach little Bills, Sabres, Blizzard, and Bisons fans good sportsmanship; “Lighting Buffalo’s Imagination,” since in addition to being the Queen City and the City of Good Neighbors, Buffalo is the City of Light and one of the first places to have electricity. We haven’t spoiled all the surprises; mark your calendars for April 2019 and see for yourself!

PITTSFORD Seven miles southeast of Rochester, you’ll find the oldest village in Monroe County. Situated on the canal, Pittsford’s Schoen Place is a bustling hub of activity in the summer months. More than a dozen galleries and artist studios are in the vicinity, and the Memorial Art Gallery boasts a permanent collection of roughly twelve thousand works. Its Clothesline Arts Festival takes place September 8 and 9, which wraps up the summer festival season.

Additionally, one block over on East Avenue, visitors can enjoy the George Eastman Museum and Rochester Museum and Science Center. Other attractions in the vicinity include the Strong Museum and Geva Theatre. Whether you’re en route to the Finger Lakes wineries, in town for a wedding, or simply planning a quick day trip or weekend getaway, Rochester likely has an activity or ten that will surely float your boat.

The importance of orthopedic rehabilitation and how to prepare for it

hen it comes to health, one can never be too prepared, and that includes facing surgery and rehabilitation. Undergoing a surgical procedure taxes your body, and recovery can be even more intense.

Elective surgeries to replace damaged joints or treat unexpected injuries are among common reasons individuals face surgery and rehabilitation.

Orthopedic rehabilitation therapy treats conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system and is often recommended after a hospital stay so patients can rebuild strength, relearn skills, or adapt to new limitations.

As with anything intimidating in our lives, the more you know beforehand, the more relaxed and confident you’ll be when it’s time to face the event.

We’ve been taught that staying active and exercising is good for us, but, as we age, our bodies manifest aches, pains, and debilitations developed over years of movement. If you’re considering a preplanned surgical procedure such as a joint replacement, you have the luxury of time to find a rehab facility and program that will best suit your needs and personality. “It’s worth the investment to tour a facility, meet the staff, and discuss treatment options with the therapists,” says Melissa Graziano, physical therapist, director of rehabilitative services for the McGuire Group, which operates five rehabilitation centers in the area. “You’ll experience less anxiety and feel more confident going into surgery.” Preplanning also ensures that there will be a bed waiting at your rehab facility of choice.

This gives you peace of mind, and if you’re discharged directly home, you can cancel your reservation.

Some physicians offer pre-op classes that review hospital and postop expectations, as well as what to anticipate if you’re receiving therapy at home or at a rehabilitation facility. “When our therapists begin working with new patients, they can clearly identify those who’ve attended the pre-op classes because they’re familiar with the basic exercises and understand what’s required to recover,” Graziano points out. “A successful healing process is interwoven with an effective and personalized rehabilitative regimen.”

Ideally, the better shape you’re in leading up to surgery, the easier it is to recover. For example, if you’re an avid hiker sidelined by a knee injury, don’t just sit on the couch; follow your doctor’s orders for light exercise that will help you stay healthy until surgery. If you smoke, attending smoking cessation classes while you wait for your surgery date is useful, as

many hospitals and some rehab centers don’t allow smoking on campus.

Of course, if you find yourself unexpectedly in the hospital after an unplanned event such as a fall, stroke, accident, or illness, rehab decisions need to be made quickly. Your doctor may have an affiliation with a rehabilitation center that is aligned with his or her protocols, levels of care, and commitment to quality; you may be encouraged to follow up there, but the decision is always yours. And whether you’re seeking a rehab facility over time or in a hurry, the best advice remains the same.

First, if you’re receiving rehab in a nursing home-based program, check the facility’s star rating with the federal government. Medicare.gov rates all facilities nationwide on metrics including state surveys, staffing numbers, and quality measures. A facility with a high star rating indicates that it has incorporated superior standards, invested in specialized staff, and is committed to operating in accordance with best practices.

Second, if you have a specific need—such as cardiac, pulmonary, neurologic, or wound rehabilitation— find out whether the facility has specialized units for it. The level of care on these units is generally more sophisticated and with technology and rehabilitation equipment designed to meet your needs. Likewise, inquire about the expertise of the staff within the building. Ask whether there are physicians and specialists available twenty-four hours a day, what the nurse-to-patient ratio is, and what education levels and qualifications the therapy team has.

Physical therapy focuses on performing functional mobility tasks— such as negotiating stairs, transitioning to a chair or bed, sitting comfortably, and walking extended distances— with ease and efficiency. By comparison, occupational therapy addresses activities of daily living such as dressing, cooking, eating, and bathing. If you have a mobility restriction, therapists will teach you how to use adaptive equipment, develop tolerances, and accomplish tasks safely and independently. Since rehabilitation is the focus of your stay, ask how many times a day both physical and occupational therapies are available, and how many days of the week they’re offered. “Be aware that some facilities state they offer both disciplines daily, but it’s most beneficial to have both therapies two times a day,” Graziano says.

to see patients when they’re not at the facility. Inquire about equipment and environments designed for rehabilitation patients, the monitoring devices used, and unique forms of therapy incorporated. Request a designated representative to help you determine what your insurance will cover, an important consideration.

Once you’ve chosen a place, bringing a few comforts from home such as your pillow, warm blanket, or small photos will aid in the recovery process. Social workers are also on staff to address your feelings about your stay, and, in some cases, concerns regarding a change in your abilities.

Finally, choose a facility that offers outpatient therapy.

In some cases, if you go straight home from the hospital, outpatient therapy may be all you require. However, if you’re an inpatient, it will be easier to pick up where you left off if you transition to outpatient status with the same rehab team.

One thing is for certain, the age-old adage, “what you put in is what you get out,” still stands. This goes for the research you do beforehand as well as the effort you put forth while in rehab.
