Do Your Plants Look Sick?

ow is the time when many of your indoor plants start to look unwell— straggly, poor color, sick-looking. Winter seems to be the best time to kill plants! It may be time for tough love. If you can’t or don’t want to re-pot, wash, give away, or divide, it may be time to say goodbye to some plants. After all, on their own, potted plants have a limited lifetime. This also gives you the opportunity to go plant shopping—a good thing!

Why do so many plants look so terrible at this time of the year? It’s chilly by your windows. The light intensity is less. The air in your house is dry, but most house plants are tropical plants that thrive on high humidity. You’re probably feeling this too, sleepy earlier, parched skin, chilly.

Many folks try to make their plants better by watering and fertilizing, neither of which helps.

The excess humidity favors the multiplication of mealy bugs.

Mealybugs are a common but serious problem on houseplants in the winter months. See the photo at left–I took of one of my orchids with mealybugs. (Sometimes I overwater too.)

Take a good look at your plants.

Have a magnifying glass? Use it.

You will notice cotton-like masses.

Closer examination would show that these relatives of scale insects are oval-shaped and look white because of the powdery waxy coating on their bodies. They may appear not to move at all, but if you watch, you will note that they slowly crawl on the undersides of leaves. Creepy, huh? They especially like crevices at the base of leaves making it difficult to get rid of them by mechanical means such as scraping. Mealybugs use their sucking mouth parts to suck up plant sap, gradually weakening the plants. This makes the plants susceptible to diseases like fungal infections. Mealybugs should be taken seriously as each female can lay over 500 eggs.

CAROL ANN HARLOS Mealybugs are often difficult to control. The best time to kill them is when they have just emerged and before they have formed a waxy coat. Since there are often many generations, the indoor gardener must be vigilant. What to do?

You can pick them off by hand or use a swab dipped in alcohol. I personally find this tedious and I would probably never get around to the repetition that is needed, especially because I have a large number of plants. I wash mealy bug-affected plants in a dilute solution of detergent in water (two teaspoons detergent per gallon).

I spray the detergent mix in the hard to reach crevices. Die! Die! Be sure to cover the undersides of the plants, especially around the areas where leaves and flowers are attached. Finally, repeat the process using only water to get rid of both the mealybugs and the detergent. If you prefer, you can use horticultural oils instead of the detergent. Either way, examine your plants at regular intervals and repeat the treatment as needed.

You are not finished! Remove and wash plant trays and saucers.

was delighted to see, during last week’s grocery shopping, that Valentine’s Day candy is still sold in bright crimson heart-shaped boxes. There were even padded ones, with a red ribbon bow in the center of the lid. Obviously, I would have to return to the Pick ‘n’ Pay when unaccompanied by my spouse to get one. And I did. the extra milk and youngest daughter—now with a preI knew I’d get faux serious orange juice. It was I who protestations of how the chocolates teen daughter of her own—rushed to claim and collect it. I’m not sure caught the younger brother would race immediately to their carefully extracting a candy from position around her hips and how Sis believed our assurances that we the subsequent dentistry would had not opened it. I don’t know what the nether region of the box. Breakfast at Tiffany’s American Repertory Theater of Western New York

By Richard Greenberg Director: Matthew LaChiusa Cast: Candice Kogut, Heather Casseri, Dewel Perez, Robert Insana, Derrik Reynolds, Elizabeth Oddy, Christopher Wagner “Breakfast at Tiffany’s resonates in American pop culture due to the film icon Audrey Hepburn in her portrayal of [Truman] Capote’s character, [Holly Golightly],” says Matthew LaChiusa, American Repertory Theater of Western New York executive director.

“We find her adorable, sexy, precocious, and sympathetic as Hepburn depicts a New York City socialite gold-digging her way through the city’s richest eligibles. What we ultimately learn from this story is that a free spirit cannot be contained nor caged, and, in the attempt to reinvent oneself, this freedom cannot be compromised.

Capote’s story, as adapted through Greenberg, is funny, smart, heartfelt, and makes for a good night of theater.”

Though Capote’s novella was

refashioned as a musical in 1966—the book by Abe Burrows was rewritten

by Edward Albee during Broadway tryouts—but it never officially opened. Years later, in 2013, a staged concert was presented in London; that same year, Richard Greenberg’s stage adaptation opened on Broadway.

It’s this version that ARTWNY will present; though it has songs, it’s not considered a musical.

“ART artistic director Candice Kogut and I both felt the story fits into the company’s vision in that ART tells the American story, and how much more American can you get with Holly Golightly?” says LaChiusa, who says meeting audience expectation will be the biggest challenge in mounting the show. “This is an iconic story with iconic characters, so the challenge is making it our story, our vision, while meeting expectations.”

LaChiusa and Kogut have more than met expectations this season, producing shows in two spaces and even hosting one-off events in the Theaterloft space. “[It’s] exhausting,” LaChiusa concedes. “But, so far, so good, and keeping the blood pressure at a healthy rate.”

Kramer points to “a wonderful song for the character of Mother called “Back to Before.” In it, she sings about how the world has changed and so has she. “It has a great lyric: ‘We can never go back to before.’ In many ways, Mother’s journey is similar to what our country is going through right

thought of Ragtime and how much of the show is filled with exciting group numbers. I vowed right then that we would try and figure out a way to make it work. I wanted more of that sound and experience in the theater for our patrons.”

Last year, the Fifth Avenue Theatre in Seattle did the show with a cast of sixteen, and that caught Kramer’s attention. “It’s doable with a cast this size,” says Kramer of his cast of eighteen, the largest that has ever been on the MusicalFare stage and still about half the size of the original Broadway company. “It’s a tremendous challenge to scale it so it works in our space. That said, it’s also a tremendous opportunity for our audiences as they’re going to experience this epic show in a very intimate setting. The setting is going

“There are so many topics from 1906 in Ragtime—immigration, racial prejudice, economic prosperity for the one percent, unions, assimilation— that are sadly still hot button topics today. Ironically, I think Ragtime is more socially relevant today than when it opened twenty years ago.”

Kramer has known and loved the show since, but considered it “immense and undoable” in MusicalFare’s intimate space. But he started thinking about it during last season’s production of Violet, which features the entire cast in the opening number. “The sound in the theater was stirring,” he recalls, “but other than that opening number, Violet is full of solos and duets. I

If I Picked the Winners A critic’s Oscar selections

Runners-up: Barry Jenkins (If Beale Street Could Talk), Alfonso Cuarón (Roma) Best Actor: Ethan Hawke (First Reformed) Hawke has become one of film’s most dependable stars, and as a smalltown pastor drawn to a similarly sad pregnant woman, he gives the year’s most memorable performance.

Runners-up: Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate), Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born) Best Actress: Carey Mulligan (Wildlife) Paul Dano’s directorial debut is a somber story of a broken marriage, and in addition to its wonderful script (by Dano and Zoe Kazan), it features a shattering performance from Mulligan. What a shame that she did not catch fire in the Oscar race.

Runners-up: Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Toni Collette (Hereditary)

t’s nearly Oscar time, and if there is one thing veteran Academy Awards watchers can all agree on, it’s that the most deserving choices probably won’t win. They might not be nominated, either.

As a (part-time) film critic, I had the opportunity to see just about every 2018 release of note. So, I’ve formed some strong opinions. If I were in charge, the people and films below would be your Oscar winners. Note that many of these are available to rent already, with the rest coming soon.

Best Picture: If Beale Street Could Talk Moonlight director Barry Jenkins’s James Baldwin adaptation is a devastating love story set in 1970s Harlem. Tragic, warm, and breathtakingly emotional, there was no better film in 2018.

Best Supporting Actor: Hugh Grant (Paddington 2) In a stellar year for supporting performances, Hugh Grant’s hilarious, multi-dimensional villain in the great Paddington 2 stands tall. Don’t sleep on this wonderful sequel based on the beloved children’s book character.

Runners-up: Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Steven Yeun (Burning) Best Supporting Actress: Claire Foy (First Man) The Neil Armstrong biopic First Man came and went far too quickly this fall. And, while Ryan Gosling shined as Armstrong himself, it was The Queen’s Claire Foy who proved most memorable, as the astronaut’s long-suffering wife.

Runners-up: Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk), Emma Stone (The Favourite) Best Adapted Screenplay: If Beale Street Could Talk (Barry Jenkins) Jenkins directed the best film of the year, and I believe his script was the most delicately powerful.

Runners-up: Can You Ever Forgive Me? (Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty), Wildlife (Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan)

Best Original Screenplay: First Reformed (Paul Schrader) With Reformed, veteran writerdirector Schrader made the most psychologically probing, dramatically profound film of the year. It also ranks among the most spiritually insightful motion pictures ever made.

Runners-up: Sorry to Bother You (Boots Riley), The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (Ethan Coen and Joel Coen)

Best Animated Feature: SpiderMan: Into the Spider-Verse The seventh big-screen entry for Marvel’s beloved webslinger is the only animated film this year that can comfortably fit on the best-of list for a ten-year-old superhero junkie and a late-thirtysomething film critic. This superhero film feels utterly fresh.

Runners-up: Isle of Dogs, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies Best Documentary Feature: Shirkers If you have Netflix, you can watch Shirkers right now. My advice: Do not read the plot summary. Just push play, and the let this strange mystery about artistic creation and memory unfold before your eyes.

Runners-up: Minding the Gap, Three Identical Strangers Best Foreign Language Film: Roma Another 2018 entry released on Netflix, Alfonso Cuarón’s heartfelt story of a wealthy family in early 1970s Mexico and its devoted housekeeper is a stunning memoir.

Roma also features the year’s most emotionally powerful ending.

Grover Cleveland’s Buffalo

rover Cleveland, born in 1837, came west across New York State to find a place to study law. He found one, working in Buffalo with his wellconnected uncle, Lewis Allen, and that was the start of a remarkable career for Cleveland that included Erie County Sheriff, Buffalo mayor, New York governor, and president of the United States.

Among other landmarks, Cleveland is remembered with a statue at Buffalo City Hall, his name on a golf course, and a high school. (Buffalo’s Allen Street is named after Uncle Lewis, incidentally, whose cattle once walked that route.)

Cleveland was also the only US president elected in two nonconsecutive terms, gaining the White House in 1884 by beating James Blaine, losing it in 1888 to Benjamin Harrison despite winning the popular vote, then defeating Harrison in 1892. He began his first term as a bachelor, and married the young daughter of a colleague in 1886, history’s only marriage of a president in the White House.

His two terms in office were marked with a recession, labor strikes, military modernization, a Long Island vacation that was actually secret cancer surgery aboard a boat, and later ill health and retirement to his birthplace of New Jersey, where he died in 1908.

New Jersey regards him as a native son. So does Buffalo.

As a lawyer in Buffalo, Cleveland developed a reputation for hard work and dedication to his job, and became a partner in Cleveland and Bissell, a law firm included in the lineage of current Buffalo law firm Phillips Lytle.

He was elected Erie County Sheriff in 1870, when Buffalo still maintained something of a Wild West vibe, and presided over two executions, events

not found on any other president’s resume. Patrick Morrissey murdered his mother. John Gaffney shot a man to death in a Buffalo saloon. Both were convicted, and both swung from the gallows in 1872 and 1873, respectively, at Erie County Jail, where the Central Library now sits. In both cases, Cleveland pulled the lever to engage the trap door after undersheriffs declined the duty. That a sheriff would serve as an executioner was unusual at the time.

He was elected mayor of a very corrupt city in 1882, exposing municipal graft and refusing raises for the Common Council members, but served only ten months before winning the state gubernatorial race.

Then came the White House.

The reputation of Cleveland in Buffalo was that of a dignified and driven workaholic, living simply in a boarding house and supporting his mother and sisters. It’s why his fistfight with furniture maker Mike Falvey seemed out of character. Falvey allegedly called Cleveland a liar, and Cleveland punched him hard enough to put Falvey into a Seneca Street gutter. They walked several blocks, swinging and brawling until the fight was broken up, and later made up over drinks, the story goes.

Cleveland also had what historian Alan Nevins described as an active social life in the “easy-going sociability of hotel lobbies and saloons.” That may

have driven the rape accusation by an attractive widow and alleged alcoholic, Maria Crofts Halpin, who gave birth to a baby boy, last name Cleveland.

Competing stories muddied the truth, one saying that Cleveland took the rap to protect law partner Oscar Folsom, the father of the woman Cleveland eventually married in the White House. Halpin’s testimony was rebutted by discovery of a contract by which she agreed to a $500 settlement and never to bother Cleveland again.

When Cleveland ran for president, “Ma, Ma, where’s my paw?” was a rallying slogan of his opponents. “Gone

to the White House, ha ha ha,” was the response from his supporters. All this figures into City of Light, the celebrated 1999 novel by Lauren Belfer.

The various scandals may have been responsible for Cleveland’s lack of interest in returning to Buffalo, after Albany and Washington. He died in New Jersey after eleven years as a private citizen there. Buffalo has not forgotten him. FY Ed Adamczyk is the municipal historian of the Village of Kenmore and the Town of Tonawanda.

Millard Fillmore’s Influence on Buffalo

T

he story of Millard Fillmore, the thirteenth president of the United States, is both interesting and controversial, and his influence can be found all around Buffalo and its surrounding suburbs.

While many say his generous nature was a boon to Buffalo’s cultural development, others classify him as one of the nation’s worst presidents.

His low ranking by presidential historians is due to the Compromise of 1850, which strengthened slavery and ultimately failed to prevent the Civil War. Born into extreme poverty in Locke Township, New York, on January 7, 1800, Fillmore rose from hardship through study, even when it meant having to steal books. He attended New Hope Academy in 1819, where he met Abigail Powers, who was teaching the class.

That same year, he clerked and studied law under Judge Walter Wood of Montville, New York. Fillmore moved to Buffalo, where he continued his studies in the law office of Asa Rice and Joseph Clary. Fillmore was admitted to the bar in 1823 and began practicing law in East Aurora.

He formed a law partnership,

Fillmore and Hall, in 1834. It became one of Western New York’s most prestigious law firms and exists today as Hodgson Russ LLP. Fillmore wed Powers in 1826, the same year he built their home, which is a National Historic Landmark.

The house, which originally stood on Main Street near the Aurora Theatre building, eventually fell into disrepair.

Margaret Evans Price (Mrs. Irving Price of Fisher-Price Toys) purchased the house in 1930. An artist in her own right, she had it moved to its present location at 24 Shearer Avenue, and turned it into a studio.

The house was acquired by the Aurora Historical Society, which returned it to a home circa 1826.

Typifying a small frame dwelling of the Federal Period, the house is furnished with pieces that once belonged to the Fillmores.

a restored fireplace and pantry with tin ware and pottery. Visitors to this historic house museum can also view a carriage barn and Presidential Rose Garden with pre-1840 varieties.

Fillmore moved to Buffalo in 1832, the year Buffalo became a city, and helped write the charter. He was elected to Congress, state comptroller, and eventually vice president while living in a home on Franklin Street between Huron and Mohawk. Even after leaving the White House in

1853, he and his wife continued to live in that home.

The house was razed in 1929, and, in 1952, the Franklin Street YWCA Headquarters was built on that spot.

Fillmore moved to a mansion in 1858, a block south on Niagara Square. The residence became the Castle Inn Hotel after his death. It was demolished in 1921 when the Statler Hotel was built. At the time, it was the largest hotel in the country.

In 1846, Fillmore became one of the principal founders of the State University of New York at Buffalo.

He became the first chancellor and continued to serve in the honorary position until his death.

Fillmore’s name appeared on the continuing education school, Millard Fillmore College, which was located on the South Campus. The Millard Fillmore Academic Center, an academic and administrative services building, was established on the North Campus.

In 1848, Fillmore was elected vice president of the United States

COVER alongside Zachary Taylor, who was the Whig Party candidate. When Taylor died in 1850, Fillmore became the thirteenth president.

He was the last Whig US president and the last president not to be affiliated with either the Democratic or Republican parties.

During his tenure, the Compromise of 1850, which averted the dissolution of the Union for another decade, was passed.

He also signed the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, which made it difficult for slaves to escape to freedom. Personally, Fillmore was against slavery, but he felt the federal government had no jurisdiction in eliminating it.

Fillmore returned to Buffalo after his presidency ended on March 3, 1853. He then began working with cultural organizations and on civic endeavors that would greatly benefit the city.

During this time, Fillmore provided financial assistance to the Sisters of Charity, the result being the construction of Buffalo General Hospital.

He also founded the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, where he became vice president.

Fillmore founded and presided over the

Buffalo Club, which was the city’s first exclusive social group. He was also both a financial contributor and board member of the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy.

Today it is the governing body of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

As the president of the board of trustees, he laid the groundwork for the Grosvenor Library, one of the nation’s most comprehensive reference collections, now at the downtown branch of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library.

He helped raise money for Buffalo’s Society of the Natural Sciences while helping launch the Buffalo Historical Society, where he served for five years as its first president.

In 1923, Buffalo’s Homeopathic Hospital was renamed Millard Fillmore Hospital.

Fillmore died of a stroke on March 8, 1874.

Buffalo and the Presidents A history of presidents visiting WNY

illard Fillmore and Grover Cleveland lived in Buffalo before they became president, but almost every US president visited Buffalo prior to, during, or after their presidency. The book Buffalo and the Presidents by former Buffalo resident Martin S. Nowak, details their formal and informal visits to Buffalo and Western New York.

Neither Fillmore nor Cleveland were born in Buffalo. However, both arrived here as young men and began their political careers in the

city. When Buffalo was incorporated as a city in 1832, Fillmore helped draft the city charter. He later represented WNY in the House

of Representatives. Cleveland was elected Erie County Sheriff in 1870 and began his campaign against government corruption as Mayor of Buffalo in 1882.

Two other presidents were closely associated with Buffalo. In 1901, William McKinley was assassinated at the Pan-American Exposition, and Theodore Roosevelt was inaugurated president at the Wilcox Mansion on Delaware Avenue.

There were also two vice presidential candidates from Western New York, William E. Miller from Lockport in 1964 and Jack Kemp, the former Buffalo Bills quarterback, in 1996.

In his book, Nowak discusses all the presidential visits to Buffalo.

George Washington came within a hundred miles of Buffalo in 1753 as a major during the French and Indian War when he was only twenty-one.

He referenced Buffalo Creek in his memoirs.

The first president to visit Buffalo while in office was James Monroe.

Three months after he became president, Monroe embarked on a tour of the northeastern and northwestern sections of the United States. On August 8, 1817 Monroe toured Fort Niagara and stayed at the Niagara Falls home of Judge

Augustus Porter, the brother of Peter B. Porter. The following morning, his entourage traveled through Black Rock, arriving in Buffalo around noon for a luncheon reception at Landon’s Tavern, located at the present corner of Exchange and Washington Street.

The first person to visit Buffalo who later became president was William Henry Harrison. As a General during the War of 1812, he and his troops were ordered to the Niagara Frontier. Along with Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, the hero of the Battle of Lake Erie, Harrison and his officers were greeted

by Colonel Cyrenius Chapin of the Buffalo militia and many of Buffalo’s 1,500 residents. They were honored at a dinner hosted by General Peter B. Porter at Pomeroy’s Tavern, located at 283 Main Street, near Swan Street. Harrison was in Buffalo from October 24 to 27, 1813, when his troops crossed the Niagara River at Black Rock and traveled north to occupy Fort George in Newark, now Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Abraham Lincoln visited Buffalo in 1848 and 1857. After being elected president, in February 1860, Buffalo was one of Lincoln’s stops en route to his inauguration in Washington, DC. When he arrived at the Exchange Street Train Station, an estimated 10,000 people were crowded into the building and platform. Lincoln was greeted in Buffalo by former president Millard Fillmore and taken by carriage to The American Hotel on Main Street, just north of Eagle Street. Lincoln gave a speech to the assembled crowd from a second-floor balcony of the hotel, and that evening a reception was held in the hotel for more than a thousand guests. The following morning, Lincoln attended church services in Fillmore’s pew at The First Unitarian Church at Franklin and Eagle Street. They had lunch at Fillmore’s mansion on Niagara Square and, that evening, attended a lecture in St. James Hall at Washington and Eagle Streets.

After Lincoln’s assassination, his

funeral train arrived at Exchange Street Station on April 27, 1865.

Six white horses pulled the hearse from Exchange Street up Main to Niagara, on to Delaware, Tupper, and back down Main to Street to James Hall at Washington and Eagle Streets. From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., approximately 100,000 people filed past Lincoln’s open casket. Those visiting the hall included former president Millard Fillmore, Buffalo Mayor William Fargo, and a twenty-eight-year old Grover Cleveland, who, twenty years later, would be in the White House.

The book documents visits to Western New York by presidents throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, culminating in visits by candidates Trump and Clinton during the 2016 campaign.

Martin S. Nowak initially became interested in the presidents at age nine when he was given a coloring book of the US presidents, which included a short bio on each.

When he was young, his sister remarked that while other boys were playing with baseball cards, he was playing with US president cards. Martin worked for the VA and, throughout his adult life, collected articles and newspaper clippings about the presidents. The majority of the material in Buffalo and the Presidents came from local newspaper articles, verified by books and internet sources.

Prior to writing Buffalo and the Presidents, Nowak wrote for various magazines and, in 2010, published The White House in Mourning, a book that covers the eight presidents who died in office. He is a member of the Association For A Buffalo Presidential Center, the Polish American Historical Association, and the American Historical Association and Polish Arts Club of Buffalo. After living most of his life in WNY, he relocated to Florida in the summer of 2018.

According to Nowak, Buffalo and the Presidents is the only book published that documents the history of US presidents with any

When JFK Came to Buffalo

T

here’s a good chance you welcomed President John F. Kennedy to Buffalo in 1962. By contemporary newspaper accounts, about 300,000 lined the Pulaski Day parade route on October 14, with another 100,000 gathered to hear him speak from the steps of City Hall.

The parade then was a bigger event than today, and Kennedy ostensibly came through Buffalo to help Democratic candidates running in the November elections. While he did not let on, it was also the day he learned that a Soviet medium-range ballistic missile was under construction and about to be installed in Cuba. Within two weeks, he informed the nation in a televised address, an element in a nuclear standoff that history calls the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Kennedy rolled down Broadway, through what was then Buffalo’s PolishAmerican enclave, in the presidential limousine, waving, sometimes standing, sometimes shaking hands as well-wishers rushed the car. That sunny Sunday seemed custom-made for a parade.

The motorcade concluded at Niagara Square, filled with several acres of people awaiting his address and spilling over onto Delaware 20

Avenue, Court Street, and beyond.

They waited through brief speeches

by Representative Thaddeus Dulski, Henry Osinski of the Pulaski Day committee, Mayor Chester Kowal, and Robert Morgenthau, Democratic gubernatorial candidate. A religious invocation was performed. A local girl, a St. Stanislaus Church parishioner, presented Kennedy with a doll to give his daughter. The buildup was an example of tried-and-true political theater. The crowd was excited, anticipating something memorable.

Kennedy, like a rock star in a heavily Democratic part of America, delivered.

He spoke of Poland, of PolishAmericans, and of his own trip to Poland, mangling the place names, although the audience understood every word. For those who did not know, he recounted General Casimir Pulaski’s contribution to the American Revolution before Pulaski’s death in Georgia at age thirty-two.

Kennedy’s address forcefully included a commitment to liberate Poland from Soviet Communism.

“We must never, in statement, treaty, declaration, or any other manner, recognize Soviet domination of Eastern Europe as permanent,” he said.

Looking at a written transcript of the speech today, it is a sober and careful statement in favor of a democratic Poland and against the oppression of the Soviet Union. No jokes here, instead, a heartfelt overview of Poland’s historic importance to the United States, and an American commitment of solidarity with modern-day Poland.

Of course, the crowd appreciated it, regularly shutting down the speech for cheers and applause. “'I was in prison and you visited me,’ is the best advice for the United States in 1962 in regard to the people of Poland,” he said, citing the Book of Matthew. It was a speech customtailored to the Polish-Americans gathered in Niagara Square, all of whom knew the heartbreaking story of freedom lost, gained, and lost again in Europe. If you grew up in a PolishAmerican household in Buffalo, you likely had relatives with first-person accounts of it all.

Kennedy closed by invoking the bittersweet first line of Poland’s national anthem. “Poland, in its history, has been overrun, cut apart, occupied, partitioned, but it has remained free in the hearts of the Polish people, and

as the old song says, ‘As long as you live, Poland lives:’ ‘Jeszce Polska nie zginiela.’ That is still true, as it was in the history of Poland.”

With Kennedy’s Boston accent, the quote was hardly recognizable, but the audience roared its approval nonetheless. My own recollection, after the proceedings ended—I was eleven at the time—includes watching a note-taking journalist ask an attendee about that anthem verse, and how to spell it. Did Kennedy pronounce it properly? “Yes, perfectly,” he was told.

It is easy to say the afternoon was an unforgettable moment in local and personal history. Kennedy was dead thirteen months later, and these highcontact, low-security presidential tours suddenly stopped. Somehow, 100,000 people in a city square felt a close relationship with a visiting president in Buffalo.

Kennedy moved on to Chicago that day to help more Democratic candidates, and then to the White House to deal with the nuclear standoff.

Morgenthau lost his election, Dulski won his. Most of us don’t remember those candidates, but those assembled in Niagara Square that Sunday never forgot JFK’s visit to Buffalo. Take a Break from Winter on a Mini Bahamas Cruise STORY AND PHOTOS

wo ships pass in the night. When Classica is en route to the Grand Bahama Island, Celebration is heading to Palm Beach, Florida, and vice versa, each taking two days to complete the journey.

They’re both cruise ships belonging to Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, each with multiple dining options, onboard entertainment, spa, casino, and deckchairs with views of the ocean and pools. But the ships are also a means of transportation.

“Some guests stay in the Bahamas for a couple of days or longer,” said Paulina, one of the ship’s friendly crew.

“And local Bahamians come to Palm 22

Beach to shop or a change of scenery.”

But for the majority of passengers, including our family, the two-day cruise was a way to escape to warmer climates that we could fit into our schedule without breaking the bank.

bodies, and our dry, pale skin thirstily soaked up the moist, salty air. Honestly, that would have been enough for us.

But the Palm Beaches, a county in the state’s southeast that extends from Jupiter in the north to Boca Raton in the south—along forty-seven miles of Atlantic shoreline, offered a wide variety of attractions from nature reserves and eco-centers to top-notch shopping and dining.

John D. MacArthur Beach State Park, located in the north of the county, preserves the lush, subtropical coastal habitat that once covered Southeast Florida. As we crossed the 1,600-foot boardwalk, a flock of pelicans flew over us; in the estuaries, we spotted cranes, egrets, and a singing fisherman. His obvious joy was contagious, though it would be hard not to be happy in this spot.

LET’S TALK ABOUT...

The boardwalk led to an interpretive nature trail, which then opened up to a postcard-perfect stretch of sandy beach where the ocean invited us to take off our shoes and stroll barefoot in the waves.

After seeing this natural treasure, we found riches of a different nature on a tour of the Town of Palm Beach. Sometimes called the island of Palm Beach or simply ‘the island’, this eighteen-mile-long swath of land between Lake Worth Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean is home to some of the nation’s wealthiest citizens.

“There are more billionaires in this zip code than anywhere else in America,” says Leslie Diver, a long-time resident and owner of Island Living Tours. “But I’m not one of them,” she adds. She is, however, loaded with a passion for architecture and rolling in information about the island’s rich history and even richer residents.

Diver’s tours included driving, walking, and biking, and on this sunny day, we chose the latter. As we pedalled down palm-lined streets and the scenic Lake Trail bike path, Diver would periodically stop and comment on the architectural style, the striking trees we passed, and the town’s gilded past, including some juicy, historical gossip.

It turned out that Flagler, who built the railways and developed the town into a destination resort, had a colorful personal life. By bribing the state

legislature to temporarily change a law forbidding a divorce when your spouse was confined to a mental institution, he was able to marry wife number three.

“He was seventy-one; she was thirtyfour,” says Diver. “And some say that started a Palm Beach tradition that remains on the island today.”

Money has always been in abundance here, and we could see just how wellheeled residents were on Worth Avenue, where over 200 shops offered a mix of high-end retail shops, art galleries, jewellers, antiques, and dining.

Though I enjoyed the ambiance, especially in the courtyards, which were designed by American architect Mizner to mimic the piazzas in Italy and the Mediterranean, the only shopping I’d be doing here was of the window variety.

Fortunately, there were more affordable retail options, including the nearby Palm Beach Outlets, whose outdoor complex housed over 100 shops with discounted brand-named merchandise.

There were also attractions that don’t cost a cent, and two of my favorites were the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, a turtle rescue facility, and the Manatee Lagoon. At the latter, we spotted one of these endearing creatures who came to this location to enjoy the warm waters during the winter months. Just like us, I thought. This eco-discovery center is located right next to the Port of Palm Beach, where we embarked on our Bahamas Paradise Cruise.

Sailing to Grand Bahama Island Aboard the Classica, we waved goodbye to the manatees and the mansions of Palm Beach as they disappeared into the sunset, and then turned our attention to onboard leisure pursuits of which there were many. Like a kid in the proverbial candy store (and there was a real one of those, too), the ship was fraught with temptations: spa specials, a casino, and specialty dining options.

Resistance was futile, and we decided to celebrate a couple of birthdays with an admiral’s dinner of surf and turf. Looking around at the many birthday and anniversary cakes, other passengers were doing the same. There was an extra charge for this meal, but the inclusive dining options, especially the a la carte menu at Yellow Elder Restaurant and the deck barbecue were also superb. Variety shows, a stand-up comic, lounge singers, Spanish dance lessons, bingo, and a Latin music party highlighted the entertainment portion of the cruise.

Grand Bahama Island awaited us in the morning, and we had a full day (8 a.m.–4:30 p.m.) to enjoy its charms.

There are over a dozen optional shore excursions offered, ranging from jeep tours and sailing to relaxing on a beach and shopping. We decided to arrange our own adventure and spent the day at Paradise Cove, known for its excellent snorkelling and beach. Under the water, colorful fish and turtles swam by; on the beach, large conch shells hid in the tidal pools; and in the sky, sunshine smiled down on us.

We now understood how Bahama Paradise Cruise Line got its name.

Next time, we’ll stay a little longer on the island, knowing that Classica and Celebration will bring us back.

With a growing collection of murals throughout the city, an impressive collection of historic statuary, and much more, it’s difficult to go for a tour without encountering public art. You can even take a tour of the art placed in each station of Buffalo’s Metro Rail System on our Art of the Subway tour. Each station features at least one art installation by local, national, and internationally recognized artists, whether located inside the station, on the exterior, or throughout the structure. This exterior sculpture, resembling a drill bit, stands tall at the Main Street bus loop measuring 150 feet and is made of corten steel. Also known as weathering steel, the material is popular for outdoor sculpture works because, rather than deteriorating due to exposure, it forms a rust-like appearance and weathers well over time. In addition to the vertical drill bit, corten steel is seen rising and curving throughout the grassy plot.

These curving lines contrast beautifully with the striking verticality of the drill bit and communicate harmoniously with the chosen site.

Beverly Pepper is a fascinating subject as well, as she pioneered the use of corten steel as an artistic material.

Throughout her career, she has worked to integrate sculpture into natural landscapes. Additionallly, Pepper taught herself how to weld by working in factories, setting herself apart from many other artists working in that medium. A striking anecdote shared

by Pepper herself has to do with the first invitation she received for a metal works show. A curator, who had seen her wood works, asked if she could also work in metal. Rather than passing up an opportunity, Pepper lied and said she was familiar with metalwork, assuming she’d be able to learn by the time of the show.

“I was terrified. But one thing I learnt growing up in Brooklyn is that if you’re offered an opportunity, take it. You don’t have to be qualified. You just have to have the chutzpah to face all the possible downfalls,” Pepper says in the 2014 The Telegraph article “The Brilliant Artist You’ve Never Heard of: Interview with Sculptor Beverly Pepper,” by Kate Salter. Working well into her nineties, Beverly Pepper is a perfect example of the way true passion can grow and evolve throughout a life and a career.

Understanding Acidic vs Alkaline

T

he term pH means “potential of hydrogen.” In order to understand pH, we have to know what it is measuring: alkalinity and acidity. pH is a scale or balance system that determines whether one is acidic or alkaline. pH numbers range from 1 to 14 with neutral being 7. Unfortunately, most people in this country are suffering from acidic bodies that are deteriorating at a fast pace.

What is the definition of alkalinity and acidity? Acidity is the concentration of the hydrogen ion. Alkalinity is the concentration of the hydroxyl ion or OH’s. So, the difference between acidity and alkalinity is oxygen. The body attempts to maintain a pH of 7.4.

If the body is not mildly alkaline, it cannot use oxygen efficiently, and if it is unable to use oxygen effectively, it produces free oxygen radicals.

The pH of your blood varies very little, and if it shifts more than a few points, death occurs. Even though your blood must remain at a constant pH to live, your breast, prostate, or other body part is willing to sacrifice itself because it is not as critical.

There is this elaborate backup defense system that steals buffers in order to keep the blood alkaline and increases the risk of yeast, parasites, molds, bacteria, infections and cancer.

Osteoporosis is very confusing

for many people. Most people think they can eliminate it by increasing their consumption of milk and dairy products. But, in countries where the consumption of dairy products is low, instances of osteoporosis are very rare. Osteoporosis is an acidosis problem. As the body becomes more acidic, it tries to protect against heart attack, stroke, illness, or even cancer in attempts to remain healthy. So, it steals calcium from the bones, teeth, and tissue. As bone mass becomes depleted, this is what we call osteoporosis. As we saturate the body with calcium (the right kind) it brings the alkaline pH up and drops the acid levels down.

If you are craving carbohydrates and you are getting muscle aches, muscle cramps, twitches, low back pains, headaches and indigestion, know that you are acidic. Yeast problems, worms, and parasites are all low level symptoms of issues of acidosis. All life

exists in a healthy alkaline pH, where oxygen can be efficiently utilized to burn sugar and make energy. If you want to be healthy, you have to be alkaline. It means eating foods rich in fatty acids because fatty acids and minerals work hand in hand. But you need to have the minerals, because the minerals in your food and water help to fund the resources needed to maintain an alkaline pH. Nutrition is absolutely essential to overcoming acidosis. Repairing and healing the body requires receiving nutrients through your food. Fresh fruits and vegetables have to be part of your meals and snacks. If the food is organic, all the better. You will run less risk of chemicals, such as pesticide and fertilizers that can deplete the body of minerals and contribute to acidity.

Avoid white flour and products that contain them, and you might want to consider removing gluten from your eating program, as it is acidifying.

Most foods consumed by the American population are acidic. Stress can also create an acidic environment.

So, what can we do to keep our bodies alkaline? Here are a few tips: Drink purified water with fresh lemon every morning. Lemon is highly alkaline!

Eat lots of green leafy vegetables. If you do not like greens, there are many green food supplements out there.

Alka-Trace mineral drops in your drinking water will supplement your body in order that oxygen will be utilized more effectively.

There are many resources available online or charts you can order that list alkaline and acidic foods. Try to eat 80% alkaline to 20% acidic daily.

Breathe! Very few people take the time to actually breath—remember, a well oxygenated environment does not breed illness.

And finally, find therapeutic ways to handle daily stress. Take walks, meditate, practice yoga, exercise, get a massage, read inspirational books or whatever you do to relax.
