here are so many ways we benefit from the generosity of those who lived before us. If you’ve ever attended a show at Kleinhans Music Hall, received scholarship funds at a regional college or university, or enjoyed the beauty of Delaware Park, you have been a recipient of Buffalo’s rich legacy of giving. And this giving isn’t just a thing of the past; Buffalo continues to live up to its name as the City of Good Neighbors every time area residents give money to support the charities they care most about. No matter your income, everyone has the power to leave a legacy.

Nearly seventy percent of all households in America make charitable donations annually. Often these are made through membership fees, tickets to events, or contributions to an annual appeal. Donations are important in helping nonprofit organizations keep the lights on and provide services. Over time, charitably inclined individuals often think about how they can make larger impacts for the organizations they are most passionate about. Planned gifts are one answer.

A planned gift is any significant gift made during a donor’s lifetime or at death as part of a financial or estate plan. Planned gifts can be as simple as naming a charity as a beneficiary in a will or as complex as the creation of a charitable trust. They can include gifts that pay the donor income during their life, such as a charitable gift annuity, or a charitable remainder trust, or naming an organization as the beneficiary of retirement or life insurance policies. Planned gifts are often the largest gift that individuals make during their lifetimes, and, whether the gift is a thousand dollars or several million, they can have a significant impact for good in our community.

The technical details of planned gifting can be overwhelming but taking time to think about the causes that align with your values can be a meaningful, reflective process. Discussions with family about planned giving can be a way to communicate the donor’s DECEMBER 2018

values to the next generation; every estate, regardless of size, deserves to be planned through a will to ensure that wishes are carried out. When you let a nonprofit know that it’s been included in your estate plans, it can deepen your relationship with the organization and demonstrate generosity that encourages others to give as well.

If you need a resource to make the process easy and enjoyable, Leave a Legacy® Western New York provides information about planned gifts as well as a free “my legacy” kit, which can be ordered at leavealegacywny.org/individual. This collaborative effort among nonprofit organizations, estate and financial planning professionals, and the media, works to promote gifts to charities through wills and estate plans.

The program encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to make gifts to the nonprofit organizations.

“Leaving a legacy to your favorite charities is a special act that should reflect and communicate what you value in your community,” explains Cheryl Wasson, Director of Marketing and Development at Beechwood Continuing Care and President of the Leave a Legacy Western New York Steering Committee. “Regardless of the size of a gift, everyone can make a difference.”

Top 10 things you can do to leave a legacy 1. Prepare a will. Only forty

percent of those who pass away have one. Without a will, you may lose control over the assets you wish to pass along.

2. Leave a gift in your will for the

nonprofit organizations that make a difference in your life. Americans are generous; seventy percent give to charity each year but, surprisingly, less than six percent include nonprofits in their estate plans.

Imagine the positive impact on our community if everyone donated to their favorite organizations!

3. Will a specific dollar amount or percentage of your assets to the agencies of your choice.

4. Consider using appreciated

assets (real estate, stocks, artwork, etc.) to fund current charitable gifts and planned gifts during your lifetime.

beneficiaries of your pension plan, IRA, or retirement plan.

Doing so can avoid estate and income taxes (up to seventy percent) that might otherwise be due when your plan is paid out.
