‘Tis the M season for dynamic cocktails

ixed drinks have never gone out of style, but in this day and age, the bar for the home cocktail game has been set even higher, thanks to Mad Men and the rise of the craft cocktail. It’s become pretty standard to offer just one or two cocktails, rather than trying to stock your home bar with a selection wide enough to please a crowd, but why not skip the humdrum and make something new and exciting? Each of these cocktails go beyond the standard party fare, but are easy peasy to prep and execute. We’ve also selected drinks that use some of the same liquors and gear, in case you’d like to try offering more than one drink without purchasing a bevy of bottles and equipment.

Sherry is a secret weapon of those who know how to use it, and this drink is no exception.

Plus you’ve probably never served guests a cocktail as Instagramfriendly as The Golden Boy.

The Golden Boy Gear and glassware: Mixing glass, ice, long spoon, strainer, coupe or martini glass Ingredients: 1 ounce Amontillado sherry Half a tablespoon of simple syrup 2 drops Angostura bitters Pinch of edible gold dust* 5 ounces dry Cava Lemon twist Ice *Find it in the cake decorating section of your local craft or party store

Method: Combine the sherry, simple syrup, bitters, and gold dust in a mixing glass over ice.

Stir gently and thoroughly.

Strain into a martini glass, top with chilled Cava, and garnish with a lemon twist.

Pimm’s, widely enjoyed by folks in the UK in the warm weather, is underutilized here in the US. Dress it up for the cold weather with a cinnamon infusion.

Cold Weather Pimm’s Cup Gear and glassware: 1-liter airtight jar, mesh strainer, saute pan, Collins glass Ingredients: 1 ounce Pimm’s infused with cinnamon (see recipe below) 1 ounce London dry gin 4 ounces ginger beer Garnish of your choice Ice Place ice in a Collins glass. Add the Pimm’s and the gin, and then top with the ginger beer. Stir briefly and garnish.

For the cinnamon infusion: 3 cinnamon sticks 1 liter Pimm’s liqueur Place a dry saute pan on medium heat. Once warm, add the cinnamon sticks to toast them. Once they become aromatic, remove from the heat to cool. Use your hands or a knife to break the sticks up.

Combine the sticks and the Pimm’s in an airtight container and store on a counter for three days, shaking every so often. Strain the cinnamon sticks out before using.

The Cranberry Cobbler is a respectable grown-up kind of cocktail, but also perfect for those who shy away from stiffer drinks.

Cranberry Cobbler

Method:

Gear and glassware: Saucepan, sieve, 1-liter airtight jar, shaker, muddler, rocks glass Ingredients: ½ ounce cranberry simple syrup (recipe below) 2 ounces London dry gin 1 ž ounce Oloroso sherry (can substitute Amontillado) 3 cranberries Fresh mint sprig

Ice

Add cranberries to a shaker and muddle. Add cranberry cordial, gin, sherry, and ice. Cover and shake until chilled, about 15 seconds. Add fresh ice to a clean rocks glass. Strain the drink into the glass and garnish with a mint sprig.

For the cranberry simple syrup: 2 cups cranberries 2 cups raw sugar 2 cups water Gently bring the sugar and water to a boil, gently, in a saucepan over medium high heat. Stir frequently until sugar dissolves, Add cranberries. Simmer until the skin on the berries begins to split. Mash the berries gently while cooking 5-7 minutes on low. Remove from heat and cool thoroughly. Using the sieve, strain the cranberries out and discard. This syrup can be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator for one week.

Buffalo ex-pat Tony Rials, who is currently working Tulum, Mexico, was kind enough to offer up this food-friendly spin on the classic Old Fashioned, made with Raicilla, another agave distillate, which, he notes, offers flavors of “wet stone, damp earth, guava, quince, and sour lemon.” A perfect pairing against seasonal flavors like squash and cranberries.

pree regularly receives notices of books published by locally based authors; we think most readers would be amazed to know just how many books are produced in Western New York. It is impossible to even briefly note all of them.

Instead, here is a small selection of 2017–2018’s output. We have focused, for the most part, on topics that relate to the region’s history and culture.

Babel: The First Ten Years Just Buffalo Literary Center Barbara Cole, Michael Kelleher Photography by Bruce Jackson and Nancy J. Parisi For ten years, Just Buffalo Literary Center’s Babel series has been bringing the best writers in the world to Buffalo. It has been an amazing gift to the region and deserves a book like this, filled with beautiful photography and quotes from participants (including audience members).

Nobody picking up this book and paging through stunning images of writers like Isabelle Allende, V. S. Naipul, Toni Morrison, Amy Tan, and many, many others will find it easy to lay it back down. It is a lovely gift for anyone who cares about reading and writing Holiday Shopping Guide | 2018 79

Twelve Towers of Buffalo William Faught Fairfax PM Press Not just another book celebrating Buffalo’s deservedly acclaimed architecture, Twelve Towers attempts to go a step further. Author/photographer William Faught uses each of his Buffalo landmarks to symbolize a segment of local culture. His goal is to pull together all the things that make Buffalo, well, Buffalo, in a twelve-part process. For example, the tower of the Unitarian Universalist Church leads to a discussion of the Elmwood Village and its other attractions. In maybe a larger stretch, the tower of Erie Community College downtown (the “Old Post Office,” dedicated in 1901) becomes a stand-in for the entire downtown medical campus with an “eds and meds” reference. And City Hall encompasses Niagara Square as Buffalo’s civic gathering/protest culture. One tower, located in MLK park, is a tower of water. This is a good choice for local architecture buffs as well as out-of-towners who want a summary of the city.

A Final River to Cross Gretchen Duling, Ph.D and Dennis Duling, Ph.D New Idea Press Exhaustive is the word for this 488-page study of Youngstown’s involvement in the Underground Railroad. The Dulings, a husbandand-wife team of researchers who are twenty-year residents of Youngstown (now living in Orchard Park), have included narratives, archival photos and letters, charts, maps, timelines, and more, providing extensive and conclusive documentation of a moment in history that—for obvious reasons—has been secret for too long.

While Underground Railroad activity is commonly believed to have taken place throughout Western New York, solid documentation is minimal, especially in forms that the public can access. A Final River to Cross documents the escapes of eighteen fugitives from enslavement as well as tells the stories, backed up by archival evidence, of those who assisted in these escapes. Anyone with an interest in UGR history needs this book.

From the Charles Burchfield reproduction on the cover to the mentions of Anacone’s and Central Park Grill on the first page, on one level, this screams Buffalo book. It’s also literary nonfiction, using the events of an era thirty years gone to explore the second coming of age that occurs in every graduate student’s life. This period of extended self-exploration, as others leap directly into the working world, can be both a gift and a curse; both aspects are thoroughly covered here. Graduates (at any level) of the University at Buffalo’s English program in the 1980s will recognize many of the names here, including such literary celebs as (now deceased) UB faculty members Ray Federman and Leslie Fieldler. There are plenty of other faculty members mentioned who may not be celebrities but live on (in infamy or otherwise) in the hearts and minds of any English major from this period. That alone makes it fun to read for many of us, but a much larger audience will appreciate the authors’ struggles to live sane and relatively meaningful lives as they also grapple the mysteries of deconstruction, Lacan, Derrida, and other buzzwords of this era in literary criticism. Here’s another choice that needs to go to the right recipient. Spree writer Ron Ehmke recommends it for: Buffalonians from back then and today (particularly those of us who are not natives) who will be able to relate to the phenomenon of being semi-impoverished uncoolfeeling young residents of a mostly-impoverished, uncool-seeming aging Rust Belt city.

It is always a pleasure to hail yet another WNY title in this deservedly popular series. For those unfamiliar, Images of America titles are filled with archival photography, arranged by theme, and accompanied by long, informative captions. The first group of images in The Larkin Company deals with the historic/geographical context that made what we now call Larkinville a place of industry, including its c. 1825 shipping canals— hence the real name of this area: The Hydraulics.

The following “chapters”—really collections of annotated images—follow the Larkin Company from its 1875 founding (by John D. Larkin) to its demise in 1967.

Writer Shane Stevenson has provided a lively, readable text accompaniment that goes well beyond simple captions. The combination of his well-researched narrative and the archival photographs makes this history come alive. As for the images, they are largely courtesy of The Buffalo History Museum’s magnificent archive.

Those who are the least bit interested in Buffalo’s history need to buy this book and then start collecting the dozens of other WNY Arcadia titles.

Explorer’s Guide: Buffalo and Niagara Falls Christine A. Smyczynski Countryman Press That indefatigable guide to everything Western New York, Christine A. Szyczynski, is at it again. In her latest travel guide, she zeroes in on Erie and Niagara Counties, with a sidetrip into Southern Ontario.

With this slightly narrower focus, Smyczynski is able to detail such offthe-beaten-track locations as Burt, Middleport, and Barker (Niagara County) and Derby, Blasdell, and West Falls (Erie County). There is plenty of scenic beauty in the two counties beyond obvious sites such as Niagara Falls, Buffalo’s Outer Harbor, and the mansions of Delaware Avenue—this book offers an all-inclusive look. In addition, Smyczynski gives hungry day-trippers all the information they need to feed and otherwise sustain themselves as they pursue the byways of Buffalo Niagara. While it’s always worthwhile to check a shop, restaurant, or any small facility to make sure it’s still open, Smyczynski provides a large and diverse variety of such places. It’s important to have the luxury of choice when faced with an unfamiliar town.

Smyczynski’s focus on the offbeat as well as her inclusion of the mainstream make this book perfect for both the tourists and residents on anyone’s list.

Lake Effect Days Philip Sultz Laboratory Books Don’t expect the cryptic introduction to explain very much about this book. In fact, don’t expect anything. Just pick up the book and open it anywhere. There will be a short block of text with a title (“Sauce, “Crank,” “Pie Truck”). The text will likely tell a little story. A character in the story will likely be named Arnie, with some Barneys and Morey’s thrown in. The stories will be fun to read and won’t have a final resolution.

Author/painter Philip Sultz grew up in Buffalo in the late 1940s and moved to Manhattan to work and pursue art. Later, he taught in a number of art schools and art departments; now, Sultz lives in Maine. This book is not an autobiography, however; it is a series of prose vignettes that occasionally feature Buffalo locations. Don’t read this for the Buffalo connection; just read it. Each page is a perfectly unadorned slice of mundane life, brilliantly told.

There are also nine reproductions of the author’s abstract collages. The book has been nominated for several awards; think of it for discerning recipients.

The Potato Patch L. E. Peeples

Kevin Guest House Gerald L. Halligan, foreword by Denis Garvey Arcadia Press Images of America Series A hyperlocal history of the first hospital hospitality house in the US first tells the story of the house itself and how a family coming to Roswell Park from Pennsylvania, the Garveys, saw the need for a guest house near Roswell. And then it goes from there, detailing the facility’s success and expansion. This is one of the most heartwarming titles in the Arcadia series.

This nostalgic story, set in 1950s-era Chicago, is written by a Buffalo author/BPS teacher.

Three generations of AfricanAmericans, the Williams family, live in a small town near Kansas City. They are accustomed to segregation but are also aware of the civil rights movement, Jackie Robinson’s struggle to play in the major leagues, and other concurrent sociopolitical happenings. The Williams also experience moments of directed racism. This provides context for everyday family life, punctuated by moments of drama. The story treads a fine line between cozy sentiment and the Williams’ awareness of living on the brink of change. Expect more of the Williams’ saga to continue in future titles; The Potato Patch is the first in a series.

Buffalo Everything FINALLY, A BOOK THAT TRULY HONORS BUFFALO’S FOOD SCENE

ho really invented what we now know as “wings”? What’s with Buffalo and bologna? Which Buffalo mayor hated hot dog stands? And could Buffalo be America’s most underrated pizza city?

A writer who wasn’t born here and has never lived here, Arthur Bovino, may be the only person in the US who not only loves Western New York’s food scene but can explain it better than any native. Released a few months ago, Buffalo Everything seems to come out of nowhere.

How does did this guy from Long Island know so much about food here? And why is he so interested?

It all started with pizza. A food and travel writer and a founding editor of The Daily Meal, Bovino was involved in pizza research when he heard that Buffalo pizza deserved his consideration. His enthusiasm about Buffalo’s unique way with pizza led to further tastings and this book.

Of course, the first chapters are devoted to chicken wings and the startling origins of this snack. As charming as the Bellissimo chicken wing founding narrative is, there is much more to the story. As with many things, it’s all way more complex and takes longer to tell. Bovina did that research and takes us along for the fascinating ride. He also interviews local wing experts, assesses WNY’s current wing offerings, and provides his ratings.

Buffalo Everything progresses from chicken wings to pizza, which is the third largest section in the book. Many local pizza fans (or should we say snobs?) feel that the sweet sauce, soft, airy crust, and cup-andchar pepperoni typical of such places as Bocce Club and La Nova is inferior or not as “authentic” as a thin-crust Neapolitan style.

Bovina differs, insisting that “Buffalo serves some awesome pizza,” and that Buffalo’s way with pizza can’t be found anywhere else. As with the wing section, there are multiple interviews, a timeline, and ratings.

Bovina spends over 100 pages on beef on weck, and proceeds to cover other traditional specialties here as well as touch on “New Buffalo’s” contributions, including farm-to-table and such recently burgeoning cuisines as Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Burmese, Peruvian, and others.

Those who think they know the local food scene are bound to get some surprises while perusing these exhaustively researched pages. Anyone at all will come away pleasantly entertained. This is the culinary appreciation Buffalo deserves.

The Adventures of Seymour & Hau

The series targets readers ages five to ten and started four years ago with the release of The Adventures of Seymour & Hau. hose looking to make lawns greener, learn how to compost, or discover plants that will grow in dry shade won’t get answers from the following books. Rather, these titles help gardeners escape from their problems and failures.

They also provide excellent winter reading when it’s impossible to do anything in the garden anyway.

The Landscapes of Anne of Green Gables

Catherine Reid Timber Press The importance of the natural world in novels and other literature is too often taken for granted. Plants and natural landscapes are everywhere in many classics of historic and contemporary literature: think of Alice in Wonderland, The Secret Garden, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and many others, including two classic young adult series—Little House on the Prairie and Anne of Green Gables. Laura Ingalls Wilder’s connections to nature are covered in Marta McDowell’s The World of Laura Ingalls Wilder: The Frontier Landscapes That Inspired the Little House Books, published last year by Timber. This year, author Catherine Reid provides a lavishly illustrated exploration of the natural environment of L. M. (Maud) Montgomery’s beloved saga. Maud Montgomery grew up on Prince Edward Island, the setting for Anne of Green Gables, and her heroine’s connection to plants and nature came from Montgomery’s love of the wild world that surrounded her. This book compares passages from the novels with excerpts from the author’s journals. It is also liberally studded with archival and contemporary photography that makes it easy to see how inspiring and beautiful turn-of-the-century PEI was. The island is still a destination for Anne of Green Gables devotees; this book is both perfect preparation and an ideal substitute for such a trip.

Island Gardens

Jackie Bennett White Lion As if the thousands of beautiful gardens within the major territories of Great Britain were not enough, here’s a book asking readers to consider the gorgeous gardens located on the more than 100 inhabited smaller islands that surround England, Scotland, and Ireland. It includes such better-known sites as Tresco Abbey (Isles of Scilly) and Lindisfarne Castle (Holy Island), as well as many others that most have never pronounced, much less visited or heard about, like Lip Na Cloiche (Mull) and Plas Cadnant (Anglesey). (drone, maybe?) and other types of shots that show the overall structures of the gardens as well as the bodies of water that often surround them. And the lush beauty of the photography can be deceiving. Some of these islands have volcanic or otherwise harsh landscapes as well as turbulent weather patterns. The narrative provides vivid descriptions of what it’s like to garden in these places as well as of the landscapes themselves, complete with plant lists.

A Tapestry Garden

The only thing about books describing gorgeous gardens made by real people is that they usually look impossibly magnificent— beyond the reach of real readers in their ordinary gardens. They can be inspiring, however, and usually do have a few good ideas that can be plucked out of the faultlessness. And some of them are more interesting than others, like this one. A Tapestry Garden is organized according to garden areas, with punctuations of talk about specific plants. The authors share their history, explaining how they created multifaceted gardens—vegetable, shade, alpine, conifer, perennial, and others—on their seventyacre property, how they have refined those plantings, and what they have learned in the process. The writing is lively and entertaining and the photography is pure garden porn.

The chapters on hellebores, rock gardens, and spring bulbs are particularly enjoyable.
