When I spoke with four of Western New York’s 2017 award-winning brewers, the bumper sticker idiom “Do what you love and love what you do” stubbornly lodged in my mind. Yes, these brewers love beer. And yes, they love brewing it. Not surprisingly then, this group—professionals who exude a deep knowledge and passion for their craft— sit at the top of the class.

TAP New York Awards 2017 Gold Medal Winner Governors’ Brewers’ Cup for Best Craft Beer in New York State Community Beer Works, The Whale Brown Ale President, Ethan Cox Coffee, chocolate, caramel, and roast—these are the most prominent flavor notes of Community Beer Works’ The Whale Brown Ale. Instead of heavy hops, “you get a smooth, malty, fulsome, and delicious 5.8% ABV all-season ale that pairs well with a wide range of foods, but also drinks great on its own,” says president Ethan Cox. The Whale’s recipe has evolved from original head brewer Rudy Watkins’ recipe, but remains grounded in the “simple joy of creating a great expression of the Thomas Fawcett Brown Malt, which contributes the bulk of the flavor.” It’s rounded out with other malts, a dash of hops, and a fairly neutral ale yeast. “We like to think we make the best beer in Buffalo, but that’s not to say we don’t think others are also making great beer! For the most part, our small scale is something of a liability, but when it comes to two things—freshness and variety—it does have advantages. Ultimately, we’re very much a brewer’s brewery, and I think it shows in the beer.”

Ted’s has been firing up the grill for its charcoal-broiled hot dogs since 1927, so they know a thing or two about quality dogs. In 1913, Greek immigrant Theodore Spiro Liaros, or “Ted” as he came to be known, landed in Western New York with little money and no English. He started with a horse-drawn hot dog cart before buying a Massachusetts Avenue shed in 1927. Today, Ted’s has locations all over WNY, and even Arizona, so a great smoky hot dog is never far away.

All of its dogs are preservative, nitrate, and artificial ingredient free, and that commitment to quality shows on the plate. Spree named Frank the best hot dogs in the city last year, and we still can’t top their perfectly done links, creative toppings, and addictive fries. With pork and beef blend, all-beef, and vegetarian dogs topped with everything from chili to guacamole and fried jalapeños to blueberry BBQ sauce and fried onions, there’s something for everyone at Frank.

Hamburg Farmers Market, which celebrates its forty-first season this year, brings together more than 100,000 people to shop for locally grown and made food items. It is one of the longest running agriculture markets in the state and runs the first Saturday in May through the last Saturday in October.

When you park in Hamburg, you enjoy easy access to amenities, but also have the option to bike or walk through town. This spring, the Village of Hamburg unveiled its healthy neighborhood corridor additions with

a fitness trail system throughout the Village, better access to community centers, and new playgrounds. See the historic sites and architecture that are on the National Historic Registry, take a nature hike down around the 18 Mile Creek tributary, or visit various animal sanctuaries for bird watching or snowshoeing. There are also over 2,549 running routes throughout the area. The Village of Blasdell is also striving to be more walkable by creating new sidewalks and crosswalks and updating lighting.

concerts and movies at local parks and 5K runs for charity like Run the Burg in June. In July, Blast on the Beach is a huge event that allows public access to the normally private resident Hamburg Beach with vendors, food, and family activities. Woodlawn State Park is open to the public for beach access and offers a newly remodeled lodge and tiki bar. Both beaches offer parasailing, kayaks, and boat launches so you can enjoy waterfront action.

Burgerfest celebrates the birth of the hamburger, which is believed to have been eponymously named after the town at the Erie County Fair in 1885. This large event includes a classic car show down historic Route 62, family activities, and a beer garden.

Throughout the summer, various events happen around the Village of Hamburg, such as the Wine About, Progressive Dinner, and Haunted Tours.

This August, the Erie County Fair celebrates its 150 th year with huge headliners that will delight fairgoers.

Orchestra, motocross events, and more. The Erie County Fair brings more than 1.2 million people into the Hamburg area each August.

Fall offers all sorts of themed events. It’s OK to keep your sunglasses on

have a secret. There are days when I really want to wear my sunglasses inside.

Is she being vain, you may wonder? It would be a good guess. I am completely capable of being vain. But no, when I want to wear sunglasses inside it is not because I stayed up too late or partied too recently or because I am upset or angry or impishly manic and want to hide any of the above. Sometimes it is one of those, of course. There are days when I want to pull the blinds on the two little windows to my soul and not let anyone see, but not most of the time. Most of the time I want to wear my sunglasses inside because they look so good. They are part of my makeup, my hairstyle, my clothing, even the way I walk.

Sunglasses do present a math problem. I have owned vision glasses for over half of my life and, during that time, I have only lost one pair, which were left behind in the seat pocket on an airplane. When it comes to sunglasses, however, I lose at least two a season, and I do not understand why. I love them more than my vision glasses, so it doesn’t make any sense. I love my children and my Tory Burch bamboo pumps, and I have never lost any of them, so the only answer I can come up is that it has something to do with the fact that I am always having to take them off. Meet a new person, sunglasses off; meet an old friend, sunglasses off; go into a café, a shoe store, a movie theater, off; slip into the pool, off; check my phone and then just have to retweet the cutest golden retriever meme ever, off.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could keep them on? I mean, on those days when the glasses are a part of the package, a complete look, a source of strength, why not stay in the moment? It is not like anyone asks us to wipe off our eyebrows, or remove nail polish, or unweave a weave just because it is time to interact with another human. Am I hiding something with those penciled in eyebrows, that gel polish, an extension or two? Of course I am. I am hiding a bad tweeze, gardeners’ fingernails, or an unfortunate haircut, and I am allowed to do that. So why draw the line at a pair of sunglasses?

I suppose it may have something to do with first impressions. Wearing sunglasses when not in the sun can make the wearer seem rude, aloof, or neurotic—as if the statuesque creature standing in the corner would rather nurse a watered-down mojito than connect with another human. But the basic reason for keeping shades on is style. We are having a style moment and simply want to keep the look together. Besides, the new shades are not that great at actually throwing much shade. Like a superfine batiste, a muslin meant for layering, the new sunglasses are designed to reveal.

They come in pale colors and ombres, and often in frames so small that eyelashes can peek out enough to wave a hello.

Gucci offers lens colors in light pink and sage green, just for starters, with 100 percent UVA/UVB protection.

Concept Korea offers mirror sunglasses, if you must, that are somehow still sheer enough to show the eye. Brown lenses are big this season, which is a blessing on some days, the days when you want to spend a few hours living in a sepia world. Even the sporty and the science fiction-inspired styles often offer frames that let the human behind it all show through.

Aviators are oversized, but compromise by letting the face show (thank you Lacoste), although the center hair part still seems de rigeuer. Oversized round, undersized round, and big and square, even one geometric shape worked into another are made beautiful at the hands of Sonia Rykiel, Veneta, Cavalli, Burani, Philipp Plein, and Miu Miu. There are only two styles I would personally shy away from this season: the drop-temple look can be aging, and the yellow lens can look

like a hangover. But maybe that’s your thing. What matters most is that if you want to invest in a pair that can stay on during the revolving door of life, this is your year.

It is my year, too, I am hoping. If I can keep them on, maybe I won’t lose them. And yes, feel free to borrow my line. If someone gives you grief for wearing your sunglasses indoors, say “I am not losing another pair. These cost more than my rent, I love them to the moon and back, and if I don’t keep them on, I will forget them.

Besides, statement shoes are so last year. Don’t you think?” Then offer to buy them a mojito, a very strong mojito. Because really, when meeting someone new, information like that qualifies as enough of a window to the soul. It is enough of a start, with allowing you to hang on to a favorite style. Literally.

Style selection guide – beyond the shape of your face Volume Hair. Remember that optical illusion test, the one where a line looks longer if the arrows are pointing in and shorter if the arrows are pointing out, but the lines are the same length?

Hair style and color can be like those arrows. They effect how others see our facial features. Choose different sunglasses frames for different hair style options.

Color There is nothing wrong with sticking with basics like black, brown, and tortoise shell. Just expand. New sunglasses are like jewelry for the eyes.

From pastels to butterscotch to turquoise to marble, consider the time of day, skin color, activity, clothing pieces, attitude. Why not pair your next Manhattan with a translucent maraschino cherry frame?

Neckline and fabric Complement or contrast, it is up to you. A tiny frame works with demure and flowy, of course, but it can also work with a suit. Cat frames are fun with technical but can also set an edge to more tailored styles.

Makeup Try on sunglasses with your eyebrows shaped, your cheeks done, and your lips in fine form. These points of interest can “frame” your choice.

Experiment with less foundation with a sporty sunglass, and more with a classic glamour frame. Or not.

Blended shape The old face shapes control less today because face shapes are more blended, just like today’s frames and lenses. We have rectangles in circles, double bridges, goggle-sized aviators, rimless squares. Keep an eye on how the glasses frame the nose, pull up or down on the cheekbones, draw attention to the jaw.
