Spotlight: Gallery Scene

By Bruce Adams BT&C It takes all sorts of commercial art spaces to cultivate a thriving artist community. Scrappy artist-run collectives, entry level mixed-use retail spaces, restaurant exhibit areas, and discerning storefront galleries all serve unique functions in sustaining a variety of artists from postgraduate novices to experienced veterans. Buffalo has seen a spurt of gallery activity in recent years, including Body of Trade and Commerce (BT&C), opened by former Albright-Knox curatorial assistant and Daemen College adjunct professor Anna Kaplan in June, 2014.

BT&C is located in a renovated building at 1250 Niagara Street, adjacent to Resurgence Brewing Company. The space has the appearance and trappings of a New York gallery and benefits from proximity to the art collective Sugar City across the street, as well as Resurgence. But a glossy space and good vibe is only part of what characterizes Kaplan’s plans. The gallerist frequently uses the word “project” in referring to her venture, and she peppers her conversation with words like “strategy” and “mission.” The physical gallery is just part of a bigger endeavor that includes vigorous promotion of a carefully selected stable of artists in markets outside of Buffalo. “I’m working now on a couple of projects, one in Rochester and one in Toronto,” says Kaplan.

BT&C gallery owner Anna Kaplan; work by Roberley Bell; Grace Meibohm Meibohm Fine Arts A lifelong Western New Yorker, Grace Meibohm is the proprietor of Meibohm Fine Arts, which was founded by her grandfather in Buffalo in 1901 as an art sales and framing business. The family business moved to its Main Street, East Aurora location in 1957, and, in 1965, began regular gallery exhibitions. It’s likely that Meibohm Fine Arts is the longest continuously running commercial gallery in the greater Buffalo Niagara region.

Being raised around art has equipped Meibohm with an informed perspective on local artistic lineage. “Artists in this area go back to [Elbert] Hubbard [founder of the Roycroft arts and craft community in 1985], the Paint and Varnish Club, and the East Aurora Art Society who are into their sixtieth year, so art has been a part of the fabric of the community for a long time.” she says.

Upcoming shows at Meibohm include Raymond Bonilla and Richard Kersting: Observe & Image, September 16–October 15. Meibohm’s website includes an extensive archive on regional artists, going back well into the nineteenth century.

Having said that, Bell anticipates revisiting Bruch and Buffalo: “The Bruch concerto is the kind of piece that really is fun to go back to, plus I look forward to making music with the orchestra and JoAnn again.”

By Edmond Gnekow On September 17, JoAnn Falletta and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra kick off the 2016-17 season with an opening gala featuring world-famous violinist Joshua Bell. Opening galas are festive affairs, and this one begins with breezy orchestral favorites suitable for an end-of-summer evening (including Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol, a suite of dances inspired by northern Spanish tunes that prompt many solo flights from within the orchestra), followed by Bell performing Max Bruch’s well-loved Violin Concerto in G minor.

“The Bruch is one of those pieces that I’ve done since I was twelve,” says Bell, “and it’s one of the four great pillars of the repertoire.” (For those keeping score, the other three pillars he lists are the Beethoven, Brahms, and Mendelssohn violin concertos.) “Bruch is the least known, but it’s very exciting. It’s got beautiful tunes, it has depth, and the middle movement is one of the most beautiful written for violin. It’s always been very appealing for audiences, an uplifting kind of piece that makes you feel good, so it’s a nice way to start the season.” Bell pauses for a second. “It suddenly occurred to me, thinking back now... I have a strong feeling that I’ve played it in Buffalo before. It would have been with Semyon Bychkov, maybe thirty years ago?” Sure

Violinist Joshua Bell kicks off BPO’s 2016-17 season enough, a teenaged Joshua Bell performed the Bruch with Bychkov at Kleinhans in March 1986. “I hate to repeat myself,” he laughs, “but I think the statute of limitations has passed.”

Bell’s drive to take on new challenges has led him to be appointed music director of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, a post he loves (he leads from the concertmaster’s seat on a slightly higher chair). “It’s incredibly rewarding and the best thing I could have stumbled upon. We tour around the world every year and I get to direct Beethoven and Mendelssohn and even the Brahms Double,” he says, referring to the Brahms Concerto for Violin and Cello (a recording featuring Bell, the Academy, and longtime friend

Bell and Falletta’s instincts to risk and savor will reward those lucky enough to land a ticket for the gala, the start of a season packed with highlights. Also this month, for those who feel movie scores can fall within the purview of seriously beautiful music (and, framed in those terms, who doesn’t?), BPO Principal Pops Conductor John Morris Russell leads an evening of all John Williams Saturday, September 24. And don’t forget that the box office at Kleinhans offers $30 season passes for students aged thirty and under. The pass lets you in to practically all BPO classic, pops, and rock concerts, all season long. It’s by far the best deal in town.

Synopsis: Voodoo and vengeance descend on a small Louisiana town when a mysterious preacher bewitches the local women and confronts a county sheriff about his past. In this raw, raucous, multi-disciplinary reworking of Euripides’ tragedy of sexual freedom, repression, and worship, Red Thread Theatre weaves live music, dance, and video with a powerhouse cast.

Synopsis: A sports writer turns to writing an advice column when he is hit by a bad case of agoraphobia and is afraid to leave his house. Most of the letters he receives are thrown in the SOB pile— same old bullshit—but a series of letters from a young woman with “disturbing thoughts” makes him face his own disturbing thoughts and fears—and maybe change his life.

From Robert Waterhouse: Euripides’ Greek play, The Bacchae pits the repressive, misogynist Pentheus against a “foreigner” who has captivated women with a new religion. The foreigner is, in fact, Dionysos, the Greek god of wine, theater, and sexuality, a cousin of Pentheus who was born in Thebes after Zeus seduced a mortal woman. His bewitching of the city of his birth has been variously interpreted as an exploration of the tension between politics and religion, an examination of misogyny and xenophobia, and a celebration of the irrepressible passion within the human spirit, which will dance in the face of repression. By the way, I should add that this project will be “company developed,” so I expect actors and the creative team will make significant developments to a skeleton script.

From Lara Haberberger (artistic director, BFV): The creators of this piece—Jenny Gempka, Brittany Germano, Diane McNamara, Kelly Beuth and Theresa DiMuro-Wilber— work collaboratively , researching specific crimes. They have created non-stereotypical characters, highlighting stories that bring to the forefront themes from the rights of the trans community to gang violence. 6x8 will utilize the words of a young slam poet to connect these stories together.

From Larry Gray: I am returning to Alleyway with my ninth play, another that features, I hope, unique and unforgettable characters in a comedy with serious concerns and high drama. There is a surprise in this play, a surprise that raises the stakes of the drama and forces the guy who gives advice for a living to make a decision that will make all the difference in his life. When I am in an audience, I cherish those moments when a play elicits laughter or tears. My favorite plays, like the ones I try to write, elicit both. Dear Lydia is one of those plays.
