Inspired by “Friday”, a classic comedy film released in 1995, because of it’s significant impact on both the weed and Black culture. Directed by F. Gary Gray and written by Ice Cube, who also starred in the film, “Friday” follows the events of a single day in the life of two friends, Craig (played by Ice Cube) and Smokey (played by Chris Tucker), as they attempt to secure money to pay off a debt. The film has become a cult classic, and its depiction of weed culture has had a lasting impact on both the film industry and pop culture.
The film’s portrayal of weed culture was groundbreaking in its time, combined with an epic soundtrack makes “Friday” a piece that you can enjoy for a lifetime. The use of marijuana has been a staple in American cinema for decades, “Friday” was one of the first films to portray Cannabis in a positive light. The film presents a comedic and humanizing look at the everyday use of marijuana, breaking down the negative stereotypes that had long been associated with the plant. The film’s portrayal of weed consumption has had a significant impact on the way that marijuana is depicted in popular culture and has helped to normalize its use in the eyes of many.
The impact of “Friday” on Black culture is also significant. The film was one of the first Hollywood productions to feature an all-Black cast and crew, and it was a major commercial success. This was a major moment for Black representation in the film industry and marked a turning point for the representation of Black people in popular culture. The film’s depiction of the lives of two Black friends living in South Central, Los Angeles was a fresh and authentic look at the experiences of Black people, and it helped to provide a platform for other Black filmmakers to tell their stories.
The film also helped to launch the careers of its two lead actors, Ice Cube and Chris Tucker. Ice Cube was already a successful rapper and had a growing reputation as an actor, but “Friday” was his first leading role in a feature film. The success of the film helped to cement his status as a Hollywood star and paved the way for a successful career in film. Chris Tucker was a relatively new to the film industry, but his portrayal of Smokey in “Friday” made him an instant star. Tucker went on to have a successful career as a comedian and actor, and is now one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood.
In the years since its release, “Friday” has continued to have a significant impact on both weed culture and Black culture. The film has spawned two sequels, “Next Friday” (2000) and “Friday After Next” (2002), and its depiction of weed culture has continued to influence the way that marijuana is portrayed in popular culture. The film has also inspired a new generation of Black filmmakers, who have been inspired by its fresh and authentic depiction of the experiences of Black people.
“Friday” is a classic comedy film that has a lasting impact on both the weed and Black culture. The film’s groundbreaking depiction of weed culture and its all-Black cast and crew, helped to break down negative stereotypes and provide a platform for other Black filmmakers to tell their stories. The film’s lead actors, Ice Cube and Chris Tucker, have gone on to have successful careers in Hollywood, and the film has continued to be a cultural touchstone for two decades. “Friday” is a testament to the power of film to shape popular culture and to provide a voice for marginalized communities, and it will continue to be a classic for generations to come

The month of February gives the country the opportunity to recognize a different type of History. A History that honours the memories of men and women “freedom fighters”, who have shaped the demographic and economic changes we see today.
February marks Black History Month, paying tribute to the real “risk takers” that took a chance with their lives for the freedom and equality existing today. Budsstyle is dedicating this edition to the Black Entrepreneurs of today, by sharing their successes driven by the dedication of their past. The awareness of disparity in diversity among the cannabis industry exists, but the realization was even more transparent when searching for articles and contributors for this issue. After carefully researching who we wanted to feature, our journey brought us two names in the industry, Steven Conville the CEO of Kronic Relief Inc. and Erik “Blunt Talk” Weekes, a well known cannabis trailblazer. Both individuals are very articulate and passionate with what they do, seemed to be the perfect fit for our front cover to launch our first print of this New Year.
Steven Conville, the veteran cannabis grower and powerful speaker, has shared an array of knowledge on several panels giving his advice on what he knows best, cannabis. As a key speaker at Lift and Co (a large-scale cannabis conference) he discussed topics such as edibles and beverages, while shedding the light on the background of product potency limits, restrictive packaging requirements and the different types of marketing involved when it comes to cannabis.---His knowledge runs deep. With very few people of colour in the cannabis industry and even fewer in the grow space, Steven definitely stands out with his flower. When we did a tour of his facility it was all business discussing the lab and his growing procedures, but when we got to the photo shoot he warmed up with ease. We had the pleasure of witnessing both sides of him; the no-nonsense, keep up to my pace or get out businessman and the fun down to earth type of guy that was acting, posing and doing whatever we needed, to make the shot. Erik “Blunt Talk” Weekes, has energy that fills the room as soon as he walks in. We were pleased to have him collaborate with us on this FIRST, yet soon to be classic shoot. His presence unveils what was missing in the industry. Weed is something rebellious and fun, but has become something corporate in Canada. Is that what we want? BLUNT TALK has put the fun back in the game with his events and IG content. He has built himself up to be a household name, where he is here to stay and is going NOWHERE! Canada was missing the “Snoop Dog / Wiz Khalifah” representation, but now it can be safe to say that Erik is in-line with that image. His role on set was extremely important in re-creating the rendition of the movie “Friday.” SMOKEY aka BLUNTTALK was the perfect fit. We hope to do more collaborations with him, one of the best, this Canadian cannabis industry brings.

His Story
History Month in Toronto, Canada has its origins dating back to the early 20th century. The first known recognition of the contributions of Black Canadians took place in February 1926, when the Toronto branch of the United Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) organized a week-long celebration of the achievements of Black people. This event was held in conjunction with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln(February 12, 1809), who signed “The Emancipation Proclamation” a declaration to free the enslaved, and Frederick Douglas ( February “14” 1818, an abolitionist and prominent black author known for his rhetoric and informantive anti-slavery writings.
In 1978, the Ontario Black History Society (OBHS) was formed with the goal of promoting awareness and understanding of the history and contributions of Black Canadians; making a clear and modern inception of Black History Month. The OBHS, along with other community groups, began to lobby the government to officially recognize February as Black History Month.
Their efforts were successful, and in 1979, the province of Ontario officially designated February as Black History Month. This was followed by the City of Toronto in 1984, and the federal government in 1995. Since then, Black History Month has been celebrated across Canada, with events and activities taking place in cities and towns throughout the country.
In Toronto, Black History Month is celebrated with a wide range of events, including lectures, film screenings, exhibitions, and performances. Many of these events are organized by community groups, cultural organizations, and educational institutions, with the goal of highlighting the contributions of Black Canadians to the city and the country as a whole.
One of the most popular events during Black History Month in Toronto is the Annual Black History Month Kick-Off Celebration. This event, which is organized by the OBHS, features a variety of performers and speakers, and is attended by thousands of people each year.
Another important event is the Black History Month Student Symposium, which is organized by the Toronto District School Board. This event brings together students from across the city to learn about the history and contributions of Black Canadians, and to discuss issues related to race and diversity.
In recent years, Black History Month in Toronto has also been marked by a growing awareness of the ongoing struggle for racial equality and social justice. Many events now focus on issues such as police brutality, racial profiling, and discrimination, and are often organized in partnership with social justice groups and activists.
While Black History Month has come a long way since its beginnings in the 1920s, it is important to remember that the fight for racial equality and social justice is ongoing. It is our collective responsibility to continue to learn about the history and contributions of Black Canadians, and to work toward creating a more just and equitable society for all.
There are still many that question the importance of Black History Month and its origins but the answer is a simple one. A race and/or culture must have a firm understanding of their past in order to have a bright future. It is important for the future generations of Black Torontonians to know the struggles and recognize how hard their relatives and forefathers fought against a system of institutionalized racism to give them a chance to learn about their heritage as a people, as a race and as a culture. Where we come from is just as important as where we are going.

Based in Toronto, Ontario, The Legacy Market™ (TLM) is a new cannabis brand that will be launching on the OCS as of February 2023. As the name implies, the vision behind TLM is to bring high-quality cannabis with “black market” qualities to Canadian consumers. The brand was founded by cannabis enthusiast, Mahad Mohamed Ali who’s long history with the plant has allowed him to create many important connections within the industry.
“I’m the founder of The Legacy Market™ and [we] collaborate with breeders and pheno hunters like Alchemy Genetics, Space Sherpa, Tunaaaa Room, Lady Jane Labs and Lush Cannabis Co. Also with cultivators and extractors like Origin Coast, Kronic Relief, West Quebec Growers, VIGR Life Cannabis, Gripon 420, Oaziz Extracts and more that we’ll be announcing shortly, ” says Ali.
Ali has invested a lot of his time and attention into bringing over aspects of the legacy world into his product. He feels high quality cannabis comes from great genetics that have been grown with care and attention from start to finish. Both the pre-harvest and post-harvest methods are incredibly important in having a successful product hit the shelves. When it comes to obtaining genetics, TLM™ chooses their strains based on qualities such as taste and smell, over high THC percentage.
“I’m a cannabis patient first and foremost, and have been
2 BUDSSTYLE BUDSSTYLE 14
growing since the MMAR (Medical Marijuana) days. I look at it as a grower first to see if it’s a viable genetic that is worth growing, and second, as a cannabis consumer depending on how it smells, tastes, looks, potency, etc. It’s never chosen based off of COAs (Certificate of Analysis) and high THC - ever,” says Ali.
Along with the process of growing the plants, selecting the right seeds can set your product apart. Since many Licensed Producers (LPs) utilize the same sources for seeds, we end up seeing a surplus of the same product in stores. This leaves customers pondering between which version of GorillaGlueorBlack Cherry Punch they may dabble in.
Instead, TLM™ works with breeders and phenohunters who have been around, way before legalization; allowing them to obtain the quality and variety this industry needs. TLM™ is currently working with four growers across Canada.
While some people enjoy fruity and floral flavours, others may look for more earthy varieties. For Ali, it’s all about that sweet, candy-like profile, which may be why many of their offerings fall under the category of dessert strains. The current offerings are a selection of dessert profiles with names like WhippedCream, HoodCandyz,Wedding Mints, Pancakes, Cheerioz, Black Milk, Sherbmints and Pure Michiganto name more than a few. We’ll also purchase odd lots from other groups with their own genetics as well if we deem the product is of our quality,” says Ali.
“We’re very selective on who grows our TLM™ genetics and do business with. Out of the 400+ Licenced Cultivators in Canada - we work with four currently: Origin Coast in Nova Scotia, Kronic Relief in Ontario, VIGR Life Cannabis in Saskatchewan and Gripon 420 in Quebec,” says Ali.
Cannabis is unique in that each user’s genetics will impact their experience with a particular strain.
Over the last few years, the cannabis industry has fed into the consumer demand for higher THC products. In 2020, it was rare to see a flower product labelled over 23% THC, but now, in 2023, we are seeing ranges between 25 - 35%. However, the higher the THC level does not necessarily correlate to a better high. Many will note how certain strains, even at >20% can help them achieve a more well rounded experience than those labeled 30%+. At the end of the day, it’s a lack of education driving this trend. This is one of the reasons why TLM™ team is deciding to make their product choices based on other aspects of the plant.
“We’ve been very vocal since day one to not just choose your Cannabis based on the THC content. We have some 17% THC genetics that will blow out some of these so called 30%+ on the markets - and you can take that in your pipe
15 BUDSSTYLE
and smoke it,” says Ali.
The cross over from legacy to legal is an important step in adding culture and quality into the recreational market. Ali says there are two main differences between legacy and legal, you do not have to constantly look over your shoulder and the amount of paperwork and regulatory guidelines involved. While there is still a very apparent gap between the two sides of cannabis, TLM™ takes pride in being inclusive and empowering the Breeders and Phenohunters who helped to pioneer the black market.
“ There’s truly only one way to bridge the gap between the legacy market and the regulated market -- by including and empowering the individuals who created it. This is the reason why we advocate and showcase who our Breeders and Phenohunters are. Eventually these individuals will be transitioning over to the regulated market like we did, and we want to make sure there’s a market ready for them that’s aware of their skills and hard work,” says Ali.
Currently, TLM™provides three different tiers of cannabis dried flower, ranging from AA, AAA, and AAAA. The team has future plans to collaborate with extraction partners such as Oaziz Extracts (Curado), Lady Jane Labs (Sauce Rosin) and Coulson Cannabis (Persy). You can find their product on medical platforms such as UTNDR, MENDO, Hybrid Pharm and Teedy. The brand recently launched in Saskatchewan and is eagerly prepping for their February launch into the OCS and Manitoba. Make sure to check them out at www.thelegacymarket.ca

BLUNT TALK: Tell us about your history with cannabis?
STEVEN: Started in the legacy market in 2013 as an investor. By 2014, I took over operations I had funded to address accounting irregularities. In that period, I learned everything I could about cannabis every day. My goal from day one was to become the owner of a Cannabis Company
BLUNT TALK: What does it mean to you to be a part of the legal industry?
STEVEN: It’s a dream that has become a reality.
BLUNT TALK: What makes Kronic Relief different than other LPs?
STEVEN: We are an authentic legacy market LP. We are one of a handful actual legacy market LPs. Not “sellers” and “buyers” who are trying run an LP. We are actual respected growers with a process that we are replicating and perfecting in the regulated market.
BLUNT TALK: Why is it so important not to irradiate cannabis flower?
STEVEN: Irradiation is ostensibly the process of taking moulding bacteria filled weed and exposing to “Safe Levels” of radiation to kill the pathogens that infecting the weed that is to be smoked! It does not remove the mould. It just reduces its potential harmful effects to levels deemed safe by the scientists at Heath Canada. Not serving that kind of product to our consumers is very important to myself and my team!
BUDSSTYLE 22
BLUNT TALK: What is your favourite plant to grow?
STEVEN: Kosher Kush and Super Silver Haze
BLUNT TALK: How do cannabis strains differ in their grow requirements? Do some strains grow better together than others?
STEVEN: Strains are to cannabis as ethnicity is to people. Just like there are differences between races of people, there are also differences between all people of the same race, yet all people of all races are basically the same! Ultimately every Ganja plant is the same. But just like every sibling from two parents is unique and special, every plant is so very different!
Ultimately it’s a weed, you can grow every plant the same way and get decent results. But if you want exceptional, you’ve got to customise how you feed each plant!
BLUNT TALK: What is the size of your facility?
STEVEN: 16000 sq/ft
BLUNT TALK: How many flowering rooms do you have?
STEVEN: 10
BLUNT TALK: How many staff members do you employ?
23 BUDSSTYLE
25 BUDSSTYLE
STEVEN: 12 full time, 6 part time, 14 temporary
BLUNT TALK: What makes a good team member?
STEVEN: Love of weed, dedicated to the plant above all else, and laziness can’t exist on our team.
BLUNT TALK: Tell us about launching a cannabis brand at this point in the legalisation?
STEVEN: It’s tricky with so many bizarre rules. So we just tell the truth, work hard as we can, tell are story creatively, and let our product do the talking.
BLUNT TALK: What are some benefits and what are some things that may be a bit more of a struggle?
STEVEN: Benefits are we are doing what we truly love with people we respect. Running a business that is over regulated, overtaxed, non-bankable and underfunded is a bitch!
BLUNT TALK: What are some factors that make cannabis flower high quality?
STEVEN: Attention to detail, love of the plant, customised feeds, high sanitary standards, high calibre staff, awesome genetics, amazing equipment, flushed well, hang dried, hand trimmed, non irradiated and packed like a true Ganja Man!
BLUNT TALK: In what ways would you like to see the cannabis industry change?
STEVEN: Shitty growers got to hurry up and die. Losing shareholder money every year and using negative share capital to buy dispensary’s loyalty is a formula for disaster. Operators become addicted to a source of capital that is not sustainable and, real growers get forced out of business. This in the end screws the consumer, the most important piece
of the puzzle. The feds and the provinces need to cut their excise or markups in half. The operators and the growers need to split two-thirds of this, savings 50/50 and the balance should be returned to the consumer.
The Ontario Govt needs to stop the nonsense and allow dispensaries in every city. The status quo is untenable.
BLUNT TALK: Why is accessible cannabis so important?
STEVEN: Cannabis has always been accessible! Do we want it regulated or not?
BLUNT TALK: Where do you see Kronic Relief headed in the future?
STEVEN: We want to be recognized as the number one premium craft grower in the country.
BLUNT TALK: Aside from flower, what other cannabis products do you plan to produce?
STEVEN: What do you want? Currently dried flower and pre-rolls. We will be doing edibles next quarter and blunts and topicals in the future!

BLUNTTALK: It’s authenticity! I made it a point to not dumb down the brand or conform to any norms. We also don’t copy or imitate any trends! WE MAKE THE TRENDS!
TY: Tell us about the events you host.

MIND OVER MATTER DR. SEBI
By: Brad S
Dr. Sebi, born Alfredo Bowman, was a Honduran herbalist, self-proclaimed healer and spiritual leader who gained notoriety in the 1980s for his claims to cure various diseases through his unique approach to diet and health. Despite facing criticism from mainstream medical professionals and the lack of scientific evidence supporting his claims, Dr. Sebi maintained a loyal following and his views on health and healing continue to inspire and influence many people today. Dr. Sebi believed that the root cause of all diseases was the accumulation

of mucus in the body, which he believed was caused by a diet that included refined, processed foods and animal products. He advocated for a plant-based diet consisting of organic, non-hybridized fruits, vegetables, and grains, combined with a regimen of natural herbal remedies, to cleanse the body and support its healing process. One of the key components of Dr. Sebi’s approach to health was his belief in the use of natural alkaline foods to balance the body’s pH levels. According to Dr. Sebi, the human
body should be slightly alkaline in order to maintain optimal health and prevent disease.
He believed that a diet high in acidic foods, such as meat, dairy, and processed foods, would lead to an acidic environment in the body, making it more susceptible to disease.
To counteract this, Dr. Sebi recommended a diet high in alkaline foods, such as leafy greens and root vegetables, to balance the body’s pH levels and support overall health. In addition to his dietary recommendations, Dr. Sebi also believed in the power of natural

herbs to support the body’s healing process. He created a number of herbal remedies and supplements that he claimed could cure various diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS. While the efficacy of these remedies has been disputed by many mainstream medical professionals, Dr. Sebi’s followers remain convinced of their benefits and continue to use them to support their health. In the later half of the 1980’s Dr. Sebi was charged with practicing medicine without a licences and false advertising. Sebi was acquitted of all charges! It is said that during the trial process Dr. Sebi provided not one, but multiple patients, that he had helped in every ailment he claimed to heal. Every single patient that showed up to court had been diagnosed by a licensed medical doctor. After treatment with Sebi these same patients were then tested by the same licensed medical doctor and guess what? All the patients had a clean bill of health. It was deemed in court that Sebi was not actually practising medicine but the biometrics of herbs and

Dr. Sebi’s views on health and healing were deeply rooted in his spiritual beliefs . He believed that the body, mind and spirit were all interconnected and that true healing could only be achieved through a holistic approach that addressed all aspects of a person’s being.
Sebi encouraged
his followers to engage in regular spiritual practices, such as meditation and visualization, to support their physical and mental well-being. Despite his controversial views, Dr. Sebi inspired many people with his passion for natural healing and his commitment to helping others. Sebi assisted in the healing of many big names such as Michael Jackson, Eddy Murphy, John Travolta, Lisa “LEFT EYE” Lopez and Nipsy Hustle. Today, his legacy continues to influence countless individuals who are seeking alternative approaches to health and wellness. It’s worth noting, however, that mainstream medical professionals have expressed concerns about the dangers of Dr. Sebi’s approach to health. They caution that his recommendations, especially his views on the dangers of conventional medical treatments and the belief in the curative powers of herbal remedies, can be harmful and may prevent individuals from seeking proper medical care when needed.
Dr. Sebi’s views on health and healing continue to inspire and influence many people today, despite facing criticism from mainstream medical professionals. While his approach to health may not be based on scientific evidence, it has helped countless individuals to find a more holistic and natural approach to wellness. Regardless of one’s personal beliefs, it’s clear that Dr. Sebi made a significant impact on the world of alternative health and healing, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

Fresh Coconuts Toronto is a team of young entrepreneurs from different parts of the world., who have hit the scene with their refreshing coconuts, cut in style.
Brad, born in Canada with Afro-Indian Trinidadian roots, and Josefina born in India, make up this dream team determined to share their passion. This aspiration came during the pandemic, with the longing to travel and be on a beach. Specifically, it was Brad’s grandmother that ignited the idea, when one day she brought home a coconut. As Brad chopped open the coconut, the refreshing water slightly spilling, Josefina instantly shouted, “That’s it, COCONUTS!” The coconut, it’s water, the taste and the feeling of holding it fresh in your hand, instantly produced the feeling of being somewhere tropical, as if the pandemic did not exist. They wanted to share this feeling with others by bringing a piece of the islands to others, without having to leave. Fresh Coconuts Toronto was created. They began the journey by sourcing the best young coconuts for consumption

and came across a few coconut vendors in Toronto; unfortunately, quality and freshness were lacking. After months of trial and error, they found a source and everyone attested to and were confident to share. As their journey escalated they witnessed energy light up each time someone got to hold a coconut.; from cutting the coconut; to enjoying the water; to consuming the jelly. Experiences shared with elderly crying tears of joy telling them they haven’t had a coconut since they were a kid in their mother country, to young kids that were able to try a coconut for the first time especially in Toronto, were proud moments they knew they were able to give, which could never be taken away.
“We started our operations on Instagram ( @freshcoconuts.toronto ) which lead to various food festivals, weddings, birthdays and even private events for a few big names within the Toronto entertainment industry. We are continuing to grow and hope to expand beyond Toronto. Both our families back home thrived in the produce industry and oddly enough our
families even being from completely different places they both sold coconuts. I guess the coconuts were always calling us we just had to listen.”
Their goal is to provide the freshest and best quality coconuts in GTA. INDICA: D.Burger, by The Original Fraser Valley Weed Co
D. Burger by Fraser Valley is a cross of GMOand HanSoloBurger . Currently coming in ounce bags. After ripping open the pack you right away get the traces of gmo along with a floral freshness. Buds varied in sizes with a few nice crowns. Every bud was groomed and trichome heavy! After rolling up a 1 1/4 spliff and taking a dry pull you get a really unique flavor, strong tone of the Han Solo Burger. Its all about the smoke, D.burger burns really nice and slow, even burns with clean white ash and thick smoke. This was meant for the indica smoker. Great taste, very relaxing and definitely gives you the munchies.
SATIVA: Cuban linx, by Tribal
Cubanlinx from Tribal is a must try, regardless of your strain preference. Coming from a usual indica smoker, Cuban linx is a top pick. The hybrid-sativa leaning strain is crossed with TKskuntand Trigerian . The 3.5g flower comes in a sealed container, but as soon as you peel back the tin cover you get a strong smell of a lemony, citrus, sweetness with hint of spiciness. The nugs are quite large, sticky and fresh. The nugs have a green tone that’s coated in orange leaves and crystals. Cubanlinxeven tasted better than it looks and smells. Smoking this bud you really taste all the sweet lemon and lime terpenes, the aftertaste is sweet and smooth. This flower makes you feel very euphoric, uplifting and creative. The best part is that there’s minimal effects of a burnout which makes it a great daytime smoke.
HYBRID: Stone Sour by Wagners
Stone Sourwas created by crossing LemonTreewith SourDiesel . In the usual Wagners packaging, once the bag was cracked open the smell was a bit weak with a slight citrus tone. Buds were a bit dry, but nice in colour, a pleseant mix of light and dark greens with some brownish orange hairs covered in a thick layer of trichomes. Once broken up the citrus note became way more pungent. After putting fire to the freshly rolled spliff, there wasn’t much of a taste to it but on the exhale did you get the sour, citrus sweetness. Definitely a very nice high, slight body buzzing, with a heaviness to the eyes. Over all a pleasant smoke that can either be for daytime or nighttime.
