Genius and figure, Raúl Gutierrez... Who has not heard of him? At 73 years of age, he looks fresh, healthy and active, an example of a passionate and committed martial artist. His life is a long discourse of adventures, daring, achievements, success and of course, like everyone else, shadows, difficulties, which he overcame. A diving accident left him practically unable to walk, he set out to overcome that bump in the road, and he succeeded. This Spanishized Chilean, who never left anyone indifferent, great fighter, spectacular personality, gallant and seductive, generous without limits when the heart asks for it, has always done everything like Sinatra, "In his own way".... In that as in so many other things, no one can reproach him, because he has always known how to be himself, without amendments to the totality, but also without recognizing his failures, because with the years we all temper our ardors, and of that, of ardors, he knows a lot. His blood was never lukewarm! He loved and loves with intensity, likes what he likes, and does not hide his favoritism. He could have been a Hollywood heartthrob, he could have negotiated his things, but he liked to be true to his nature and that led him to all kinds of scenarios from which his instinct always saved him. Martial History and Trajectory Raul Gutierrez Lopez was born in Santiago de Chile, on Wednesday, August 16, 1950 (Lion and Tiger). He was initiated in Kenpo, with the already disappeared (June 6, 1943, to August 31, 2000) Professor and then Master ARTURO PETIT ALMONTE. Petit was a Black Belt of Shotokan Karate, who invited for the first time to Santiago de Chile the also already disappeared (1989) Grand Master of Shuri-Ryu Karate (Kenpo) Robert A. Trias, (March 18, 1923/July 11, 1989), President and founder of the "United States Karate Association", USKA. Trias, upon seeing Petit's Karate, suggested that he get in touch with another now deceased Grandmaster, the well-known ED PARKER, (born March 19, 1931, died December 15, 1990) President and founder of the International Kenpo-Karate Association, IKKA. Petit did this as soon as possible, and thus became the Representative first for Chile and later for South America of Parker's organization and style, KENPO-KARATE. After some years of training in the Kenpo-Karate of Santiago de Chile, and even becoming Instructor of several groups of the mentioned school, Raul Gutierrez decided to move to Europe. He had previously received offers from a Fa-RangDo Master from the United States, who, after visiting Chile and observing a Kenpo class taught by Gutierrez, extended a proposal to take him to the United States, since he was the owner of 2 or 3 gyms in California.

Gutierrez who had already made the decision to travel a little more around the world (he had previously been in Peru, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico), encountered a political problem in his country, and not obtaining a visa to enter the USA, suddenly changed his course to Europe, where he had also received a proposal from Padova, Italy. So, with all his luggage already prepared, he bought a ticket to Madrid, Barcelona and Padova. That is to say, before arriving at what could have been his destination, he first passed through Madrid, where, as is well known, he stayed until January 2001, when he moved to Los Gigantes in Tenerife South. Gutierrez, established his first Kenpo teaching base (which until then he had learned in Chile) in the SAKUSKIYA Gymnasium at 5 Lagasca Street in Madrid (Gymnasium that ceased to exist years ago).

Later Gutiérrez extended his instruction opening other days and schedules in the YUDANSHA Gymnasium in General Pardiñas street, also in Madrid. In August 1978 he moved to the city of Malaga for a year to take charge of the TOYAMA Gymnasium; a season that he used to widely spread his martial activity in Andalusia. Upon his return to Madrid, the story had changed and quite a lot. There is a phrase that says "When the dark spells come, they come all together", the first inconveniences came from Chile, from Professor Petit himself, who had given powers and letters of thanks for the work of Gutierrez in Europe, as well as the written appointment to act on behalf of the IKKA, chaired by Grandmaster Ed Parker. A matter of which the latter had no knowledge. This coincided with the arrival from Mexico of Professor Jorge Vazquez, who introduced himself to Gutierrez as an advanced Black Belt from Parker's school in Pasadera, California. When in reality he was or had been a student of Grand Master TINO TUIOLOSEGA, and therefore was a Black Belt of Polynesian Kenpo called "LIMA LAMA". This produced a great confusion in Raul Gutierrez, who invited Vazquez to live in his own house, and to train with him and his students in his Sakuskiya Gym. For a few months, Jorge Vazquez wore the emblem of Ed Parker on his black Karate-gi, public statements were made about the teaching program (which was supposedly Parker's current one), and thus the situation in our country became enormously complicated. The reasons why Jorge Vázquez lied in this way, only he knows. The interpretations that Gutierrez can imagine range from the imminent economic and emotional need that he perceived in the person of Jorge Vazquez, to the fact that perhaps he thought that, seeing Gutierrez's enthusiasm for Parker's Kenpo, he would reject him by presenting another very different style. To make matters worse, when in 1981 Raul Gutierrez visited Ed Parker in Pasadena, he could sadly verify that Arturo Petit's Program (at least until that moment), had nothing to do with that of Ed Parker's KenpoKarate Studios in the United States (Pasadena, California). Gutierrez who always jealously guarded the official programs on letterhead, and sealed by Petit in Chile, was able to compare them and discover that he had been taught in Shotokan Karate, and in a brief part of Ed Parker Kenpo Self Defense Techniques.

Parker and Frank Trejo set Raul on the right path, but by this time, some black sheep in Spain had already betrayed him and made themselves the masters of Kenpo-Karate, even accepting a Representative for Europe who was also minimally familiar with Parker's official program. The aberrations continue to happen one after the other. Luis Gonzalez, a former student of Gutierrez, who was trained by him from White Belt to Black Belt, not only becomes the right arm of Parker in Spain, but also publishes a Book of Kenpo-Karate directed towards the formation of Black Belt, and commits his first serious mistake (moved by his own egolatry and selfishness), suggests 30 techniques of Self Defense as the total program of the system; when in fact these 30 techniques in the Official Program of Ed Parker, belong to the 32 that are taught in Yellow Belt to obtain only the Orange Belt, and not the Black Belt as he proposes endorsed by the then President of the Spanish Karate Federation. Those who had always turned their backs on him and closed their doors to all the healthy intentions brought by a simple South American coming from the farthest point of the continent, (that was Gutierrez). All these issues, the continuous disappointments, aberrations from all official, personal, particular, political, and social sectors that he had to live, made him abandon for the first time and with a deep pain, the practice and teaching of martial arts. Petit and Parker in person, that is to say, face to face, always made him great promises that were never fulfilled.

After a while, and under the continued persistence of a group of former students, he began, very slowly, to train and teach again. He knew that he could only count on the friendship, respect and illusion of that small group of students. Nobody else would help him, all his former Black Belts for whom he had worked so hard and with so much permanent dedication, had left in a very ungrateful and painful way, Arturo Petit only promised to look for solutions, but he also had his own commitments and conditions, Ed Parker acted in the same way. He only had the essence of himself left, of what he really was or what he had become. Thus he began to create a series of Empty Hand Techniques, and their corresponding Katas, with or without weapons. Later he found a great and solid support in the person of Robert Albert Trias and his prestigious organization the "United States Karate Association", USKA. The USKA not only recognized and endorsed his new Teaching Program, but also empowered him to act as its Official Representative for Spain. Great Martial Arts Master in general. He was, as he once wrote, "An Encyclopedia of Martial Arts". From then on, his life took a totally different course. Trias introduced him to the Mitose family and as another saying goes "Every cloud has a silver lining". That is to say, he walked for many years through the branches of the tree and almost without realizing it, he had reached the top of the tree. The history of the relationship with both Trias and Thomas Barro Mitose, revived in him the desire to train, write, teach, and work worldwide in the field of our beloved martial arts. As for the creation of the "Fu-Shih Kenpo" Teaching Program, Raul Gutierrez could well have structured a series of new self-defense techniques, with their corresponding forms of empty hands and weapons. But, although his destiny led him down the aforementioned paths and he was not lucky in certain sectors, the truth is that he, although so many times disappointed both by the main leaders of the system as well as by his own students in his initial stage in Spain, is not considered a spiteful person, therefore and out of respect for the memory of these, he decided to subdivide his program of teachings reflecting the influences that he obtained with them in his extensive career and evolution.

"We are what we have evolved under external teachings and research of our own." Thus he divides his transmission in 3 main groups; A) Self Defense with a notorious Parker influence (Kenpo-Karate) in the levels of White, Yellow, and Orange Belt; although he also develops variants and new training methods in the same. He then creates his own techniques from Purple Belt onwards. B) Training systems for contact combat. Where he appreciates the teachings of Dominique Valera and Bill Wallace, also in the training bases transmitted by both. C) As a sign of respect and preservation of the tradition and the Masters who bequeathed it, in this section Gutierrez addresses the practice and development of Kosho-Ryu Kenpo of the MITOSE family. With the respective influences also of Master ROBERT A. TRIAS, and Jon Fanning from Dublin, Ireland. Gutierrez does not consider this to be a mixture of styles or systems, it is simply based on "We are what we have evolved under outside teachings and our own research". He has repeatedly thought of giving a 100% own identity to Fu-Shih Kenpo, for which and after more than 50 years of studies, training and research, he has enough information and background to carry it out in a definitive way; but in appreciation, respect and admiration to those Masters and Professionals, is why he still keeps his program, making slight tweaks from time to time.

SUMMARY OF STAGES - Beginning in the martial arts in Santiago de Chile back in the 60's. - Boxing, Judo, Shotokan Karate, Kenpo American Karate. - I travel to Argentina and Peru from 65 to 70s. - In 1973 I moved to Mexico D.F.; brief passage through Panama and El Salvador. Objective, to reach the environments of Bruce Lee, but he passed away before I could participate in his events. - In 1974 I travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. - On August 30, 1976 and after completing my 26 years of age in Chile, I moved to the city of Madrid, Spain. Definitive beginning of a journey of exchanges with other styles of the time. Opening of the first Kenpo classes at the Sakuskiya Gymnasium in Madrid; 3 days a week. Later I start teaching the remaining days at the Yudansha Gymnasium in General Pardiñas street, also in Madrid. - In 1977, I also arrived late to the environment of my idol Elvis Presley. He passed away on the same day of my birth and therefore on my birthday, August 16, 1977. Relatives told me that, had we known each other better, he would have approved of my martial arts skills. A pity, for me and for his early death. - I begin to appear in the national magazines "El Budoka", "Budo", "Cinturón Negro" and also in some TV programs in Spain. - First trips of technical research, diffusion and development in Spain, France, Portugal, England, Italy, Ireland and Holland. In Holland I got in contact with the Kick-Boxing Instructors Jan Plas and Johan Vos from the "Megiro Gym" in Amsterdam. I appear on the cover of the magazine "SAMURAI". (October 1978). I also liked to travel often to London, there also in the magazine "FIGHTERS" they published an article related to Kenpo and our first steps in Pasadena, California. Trip to Roanne, France to visit the great Karateka and competitor Bernard Billiky. New experiences, new friendships and great moments. Of course I also started my travels, contacts and seminars in Portugal, Italy and later Germany, Sweden and Norway. At the same time, in 1977, I brought as a novelty the "Full-Contact" by express authorization of Dominique Valera "The European King of Karate and Full-Contact", to Argentina and Chile.

In 1979, I had the first opportunity to slightly get a foot in the world of American action movies and that came from the hand of the late John Huston (Film Director) and Joe Lewis, (Actor and martial artist). It was in the filming of the movie "Jaguar Lives", shot in Spain. Later in 1981, I was hired by the Spanish Production Company "Cinema 2000" and its Owner and Director Jose Truchado (deceased) as Master at Arms to travel to Hollywood to shoot "Killing the Vulture". American, Spanish and Korean co-production. It was shot in USA and Spain. In 1982, destiny put me in front (by chance) of Arnold Schwarzenegger for the filming also in Spain of "Conan the Barbarian". Although to this day I am told that I should have been an Actor, I never decided to do it seriously. My contracts have always been as Master-at-Arms, Action Director, brief personal appearances, etc... maybe if I had stayed and lived in Los Angeles, when shooting "Killing the Vulture", they offered me to stay because they saw a future in me... but I always put my obligations with sports, martial arts and family first. In 2000, I worked with a group of specialists for the filming of "Ja Me Maaten", shot entirely in Madrid.

In 2003 I was hired to create, prepare and direct the action of the movie "The Mix". Also shot in Madrid. During the shooting of the same, I received 3 other proposals that of course I accepted. For the shooting of "La Fiesta", "Plauto" and "Entre Cien Fuegos". Then came "Art Heist" (Golpe Maestro) and "El Coronel Maciá". I made for Jaime Falero the short film of almost 30 minutes "Por Dinero Negro". With the late Pepe Sancho, Maribel Verdú, Marlene Mourreau, Carlos Bardem, Didier Rousell, Pep Sais, etc... On August 27, 2004 I suffered a serious diving accident. Gas embolism after a dive in Los Gigantes, Tenerife South. This unfortunate accident completely stopped all my career and plans both martial sports as well as film, television and others. Since then, my priority has been to walk again, to try to be a normal person again. From that day to date, I have only managed to survive by giving the best of me, and with all the limitations that only I know I have gone through. If the experts and medical specialists predicted me "not to walk again for the rest of my life", the fact that I have achieved part of my recovery by will, efforts and constant sacrifices, I think I owe it mainly to my martial training, humility and acceptance of a reality that in turn has been going hand in hand with the passage of my years of existence.

Now at 73 years old, I can thank life for having given me that clarity, submission and surrender, but without ceasing to continue fighting and trying to do good and pleasant things for me and for others. I am not afraid of death, it never bothered me, with the understanding that "to be born implies accepting a contract to die". I have always and since my childhood felt admiration and respect for nature in general (animals, plants, human beings). I have always tried to live in the best level of contemplation and gratitude for so many good things and so many wonders of this wonderful world of ours. Unfortunately, I know that the world in general is in decline because of all the cruelty, outrages, selfishness and human evil. There is a lot of talk about values and about every human being having the right to "be happy"... but in the end those who can really contribute to this false dialogue, when they come to power, completely forget the promises and lies they said before coming to power. This reminds me of; "I am not a thief, but don't put me where there is". Or as this hypocrite, false, liar, egomaniac, ambitious and shameless individual who currently governs Spain... "He does not lie, he just changes his mind" in his excessive ambition for power. But this, as we can all observe and are living, is done by all those who apparently do not empathize with human dignity and honor. No matter who they are or where they are, they are sick, stupid beings who believe that they will never die and, perhaps, that they can go down in history for having created or accomplished certain things. But when those things have not contributed anything good to humanity and on the contrary have brought more suffering, pain and anguish to our fellow human beings, what they deserve is "TO BE DELETED FROM THEIR EXISTENCE FOREVER".

I have never been afraid of death, much less now at this point in my life, where I really understand that I must simply continue respecting my fellow men, contemplating the wonders of our nature, walking wherever I am without fear and waiting for our Higher Chief to decide when and how we will pass to another dimensional plane. I respect the poor, the humble, the hard-working, the sick, the plants, the animals, the air I breathe, the sea that bathes me, the mountain that allows me to visit it often with respect and admiration, the people who love me, who share with me, those who need me; in short, I always wanted to be a good and sensible man. To leave this world, if possible, without debts, without any hatred, without rancor for anything or anyone. Often people around me ask me why I continue working, training, swimming in the sea every day if possible, why I continue teaching martial arts, why I train alone...and my answer is "Because I want to die HEALTHY". Conversations on Shamanism and Spirituality in the 21st Century We continue the publication of the interviews that are part of the next book by Shidoshi Alfredo Tucci. In them he speaks openly about the spirituality of the ancient indigenous people of Northern Japan, the e-bunto, about his experiences and reflections on the invisible world. Interesting but... Why retrace our steps? I mean, isn't it an anachronism to pretend now to study the ways of the ancients, isn't it a bit backwards like a crab? Of course it is an anachronism! And no doubt not only that, but it is also an extraordinary cultural leap in space and time! Well, in a way I have not been able to choose; in a way I have come to this path, as much as this path has come to me. We cannot forget that every moment in the evolution of human consciousness had its reason for being. The innocence and courage with which these men confronted the invisible would be quite impossible today, not to mention the pressures that led them to go further than others. There is a necessary innocence and purity in their positioning, an innocence that we lack today, preconditioned by the many epochs of transit through which we have had to pass. The human consciential vanguard, from the moment it focused its axis on the UUBO, the chakra of reason, undoubtedly an indispensable step to support this new era, lost part of that innocence capable of directly attacking the experience with the invisible, an attitude that ancient cultures did enjoy. In the meantime, religions made their appearance as tools of control and power over people. The problem is that those addicted to ignorance often substitute one hook for another, and in the end there have been many who have ended up enslaved by the consensus around science and reason, and as I said at the beginning, forgetting that science is not a belief system, but a method of investigation. Materialism is a jump to the other side of the pendulum. It doesn't matter if people don't understand the advances of science, they hide behind a prejudiced and materialistic consensus in the face of these issues and try to distill from them something they don't understand. They say that when Chaplin and Einstein met, the scientist said to the comedian: - "What I admire most about your art is its universality; you don't say a word and yet everyone admires you and understands you" -. To which Chaplin replied: - "Yours is even more worthy of respect; everybody admires you and practically nobody understands you." The resurgence of many of these ancient paths in our days, has to do, in my opinion, with recovering the path where we left it, but with the tools that science has given us, not with its prejudices. If you think about it, it is a tremendously advantageous situation, but of course, it also has a disadvantage, that is, to avoid that the acculturation that will arise from this encounter, ends up distorting the essence of what we were bequeathed. The other side of this issue, which nobody sees, is the tremendous effort of adaptation imposed by the temporal and cultural distances of this whole process, which have forced us, especially my teacher Shidoshi Jordan and myself, to become an immense and extraordinary dimensional chewing gum, which have stretched the circumstances to a level, which in my opinion, not many would be able to withstand. Everything has a price in life and each one of us is part of something bigger, although there are many times when I ask myself... Why did the Senzos tie that mare to my side! The Mexican shamans, the IFA priests, the Celtic Druids, long before their cults were reduced in many cases to folklore and partial memories, before the great religions crushed their knowledge and cultures, reached extraordinary heights of knowledge of lucidity... and its opposite, darkness. Ignoring it would be like seeing only half of the coin and believing that this is all and that it will always fall heads or tails without alternation. Therefore we have to return to that search in a certain way where we left off, and take advantage of the experience of the ancients, because in the invisible, by its very nature and definition, any small certainty to support our lever, is a treasure worth gold, and the experience, and the knowledge that distills from it, is the road traveled in the stormy uncharted seas of knowledge. The Hagumo family entered "gardens" that few have dared to tread, pressed by the

situations to which they were exposed, a hostile and harsh environment and also, it must be said, by that courage and discipline that we have always admired in the Japanese. You frequently speak of energy and tension, these are two concepts that escape me... Everything is energy, but it can also manifest in the form of tension when at least two points establish a connection according to their charge or equivalence. Energy always manifests itself in spirals, expansive or contractive, but it has a beginning and an end; tension manifests itself in the form of oscillating waves, helicoids and is maintained as long as the two points in communication sustain their energy supply. It is simple if we see it with an example. Electricity is energy, but when it passes through the wires it does so in the form of tension, and this manifests itself in helical form. This passage of electricity, in turn, generates electromagnetic fields, which are a form of energy; that is why we say that energy feeds tension and tension feeds energy. Look, for example, the vision of the elements of the Hagumo as opposed to the Greeks or the Chinese, comes to add a distinctive component, that is the idea of tension. The classical Greeks speak of the four elements, to which the Chinese add one more. The Hagumo speak of six elements; to the classical fire, water, air and earth they add wood and metal. Wood is the element of the personal and Metal, that which is forged, the fruit of the maximum expression of tension; it speaks of the spiritual or of destiny. Wood and Metal are therefore opposites and complementary. Fire and water for the Chinese are also opposites and complementary; the Shizen did not see it that way. No doubt they were opposites, but there was no possibility that together they could generate any kind of tension, do anything together that would generate a product arising from their complementation; simply if there was too much fire, the water would evaporate, and if water prevailed, the fire would be extinguished. For the Shizen, tension arose when the union of elements generated something new and different; opposites that complement each other usually have children (laughs)... That is to say, fire and earth would make lava, air and water, ice. Undoubtedly, living on volcanic islands and with such low temperatures, this example, anthropologically speaking, did not go unnoticed. This detail completely changes the approach to the idea of the relationship between elements and of course, drastically, its application in the solutions and analysis of situations.

For the Shizen, destiny is bigamous and paradoxical. They consider it the ultimate tension and represented it as a circle. If you stop to think about it, the circle is nothing but the maximum expansion of a point. They decoded several types of destiny. The first one was the result of the conjunction of six Tengu at its maximum tensional expression. Six and twelve are the two numbers that indicate high tension. They saw it like this: One is the expression of singularity, energy. Two implies separation and consequently all polarity carries two possibilities, either balance or confrontation. Now if I cut a circle with a cross divided in three, the number of the transformation, in each quadrant, I have twelve squares, that is to say a clock. The universe is made of spheres, the rotation cycle of the earth leads us naturally to consider the twelve, hence it has been imposed. In this way they classified 12 types of destiny formed by the conjunction of at least six Tengu, acting all coordinated and intertwined in an intense and rigid way in the same direction. This type of destiny, so to speak, being the result of the conjunction of fractals, could be mutable, manipulable, depending on its nature. They also conceived another type of destiny, in which however all the elements did not point in the same direction, but bound everything tensely so that a change would occur; this destiny could not be avoided, a kind of Force majeur, which could act either for good or for evil. He loves his secrets, so only the most powerful oracles could discover them. The counterpart of the metal element, which corresponds to destiny, is the wood element, which represents the human, the free will. Philosophers of all cultures have tried to bring both concepts into a common scenario. The only way to do this is through dialectics, understanding that they are opposites and complementary. Destinies, or fate, are forged through very powerful inertias that crystallize in directions or events that cross the path; in fact the symbol of two vertical stripes (a path) crossed by a third was the way they represented it.

My teacher explained it to me like this. If it is in your destiny to go to Barcelona you will end up going; the when, or the how, are things that we can determine with our free will. Destiny is therefore a kind of conspiracy of something bigger, the result of personal decisions (wood element), conscious or unconscious, that have created a conjunction of powers composed of at least six fractals in their maximum power, and that are therefore, situations that the Shizen defined as high tension.

It has always been said that a great power implies a great responsibility and in the mellifluous and consensual modern society, the N.I.O.s run wild, fed up with so much to eat. The human being himself is the greatest of demons, we don't have to invent anything else... Personally I see it as a path of power and knowledge, of course, but essentially it is a kind of spiritual path, and as such implies a forced personal transformation. For example; one does not "see" the blinking of the eyes! I lie, you see them, but that frame of the movie deletes it, because it is repetitive and useless. To save energy we tend to build catalogs, to frame within the known the new things we know; we have to give them a last name, a label to that "new", and then, very carefully, put it in "the box of similar things". This puts us at ease and prevents us from getting anxious. We snort in relief and go on our way, usually without having learned anything. The known and consensual world is held in place and we are

not forced to question anything. It is an idiotic process, but very useful to leave energy available while in the savannah and to avoid being eaten by any ferocious critter you are unlucky enough to meet on your way, but to deal with the invisible one needs all one's energy and attention. With the e-bunto this labeling is a difficult matter, because having such a different approach, their conceptions tend to break schemes, so it is often very annoying. It is said that every injury that is typical of the sport in question, or the one that has happened in the sports field, is a sports injury from the legal point of view. One of the simplest definitions is: "The injury is all the damage to the tissue suddenly generated in a certain, defined and limited time.” From the medical point of view, sports injuries are the part of the traumatology field that deals with injuries, no matter how they occur and where they are. When it comes to sports injuries or damages, the implication is mostly of those caused by mechanical force. Mechanical forces, however, are not considered to be only externally acting, such as a kick of an object, an opponent's strike or a blow to the ground, but also they can be caused by the contractions of one’s own muscles, such as - Achilles tendon rupture due to strong muscular soleus contraction.

If we talk about the expected probability of a certain risk of injury in a particular sport, as well in martial arts, then statistics and records of sports injuries are first and foremost problematic. The results of statistical treatment depend on many factors, and these again on the health institution in which they are collected. It is understandable that, if this does not meet all the requirements, it can cause a lot of mistakes that give an incorrect picture of the real situation. It will be different to collect data in a general hospital or at a specialist sports injury facility. Also, a specialized institution will accept certain selected athletes (especially according to the severity of the injury), so that no real statistical picture can be expected. A real picture or a better realistic picture of the number of injuries in a particular martial arts will be obtained if the number of injuries is brought in proportion to the number of athletes. It is very difficult, and practically impossible to gather right information on the number of active athletes. Perhaps it is only possible to compare the number of athletes insured (especially against injuries in sports) with the number of reported sports injuries.

According to the severity of injury, sports injuries can be classified as follows; 1) - the most serious injuries - mortal 2) - severe injuries - with permanent disability for work and sports, 3) - medium severe injuries - with longer disability for work and sports, 4) - easier injuries - with short term inability to work and sport, 5) - quite light injuries - with short-term incompetence or no reduction in work and sports ability. By studying the cases of disability and the number of injuries of a number of active athletes, some statistics have determined these possibilities of injury risk; - to 40 athletes per year - 1 sports injury, - to 4,000 athletes per year - 1 case of disability, - to 40,000 athletes per year - one mortal outcome According to statistics, sports injuries are most often of an easier nature (80% with a disability of less than six weeks).

The most common causes involved in the appearance of sports injuries are; - the persons themselves (tiredness, neglect, insufficient warming, poor technique, existing or over-illness, unhygienic and disordered life, overcoming their own abiltiies, fear or trembling at the competition, negligence in work, poor motivation) - another person (deliberate injuries in a sports fight, unintentional injuries, carelessness, poor technique, neglect, roughness in the sport, an opponent who has a better technique, an opponent of excessive body weight) - Martial Sport itself as a sport in which, according to established and agreed rules, a violent injury to an opponent is permitted - sport equipment (incorrect or inappropriate clothing or footwear, worn out equipment, poor or insufficient protective equipment) - defective floor in the hall (sliding, damaged, etc.) - safety measures (poor exercise assistance, ie lack of attention by the instructor)

Among the muscle injuries in wrestling and judo (ju - jutsu, grappling, sumo, MMA, UF, etc.) the most frequent one is arm muscle damage - biceps. There are also various injuries of the shoulder as well as of the ankle joint. When the opponent drops and throws, the head can hit the ground, and if the kick is strong, brain concussion occurs. Typical wrestlers' (MMA, grappling, etc.) ear injury is othematoma and if it is repeated, it causes the deformation of the ear the so called cauliflower ear. Othematoma is hematoma in the earlobe that cannot be resorbed and, therefore, creates characteristic irregularities. For that reason wrestlers use protective ear masks. A common occurrence in wrestling is skin irritation at the back of the neck, too. The elbow in judo (wrestling, MMA, etc.) is also exposed to various injuries, especially if the arm is not straightened before the fail. Furthermore, in judo (wrestling, ju - jutsu, MMA, etc.) there is a high frequency of clavicle or rib fracture as well as frequent typical site thumb fractures. Depending on the severity of the injury, the ability to work, ie, sports activity will be possible in ten to fifteen days after brain concussion. To repair the upper leg muscle injury, it will take the contestant from three to five weeks, for elbow joint injuries between eight and ten weeks, and for a bone fracture two to three months, depending on the severity of the injury. For the toe and the elbow bones fractures , the recovery time can be from three to six months. When the rib is broken, the time of remediation is at least four to six weeks.

One of the typical injuries or, better said, damages to fencing (modern fencing, kendo, Iai do, ko budo, kali, arnis, some forms with weapons etc.) is considered to be inflammation of the median nerve. Due to many movements in the manual wrist, directed downwards, as well as frequent movements with the hand down, there is an elbow injury often described as - the tennis elbow. Such damage is the result of excessive progressive tension of the forearm muscles. The result of this excessive strain is the microtraumatic changes in the area of the muscle movement in the tibia, in the tibia itself, and in the area of the tetanus joint on the bone. The main symptom of such damage is pain, which can be so strong that the athlete cannot sleep a wink. To repair such an injury, it is necessary for the athlete to stop the activity from one to three weeks. One of the frequent injuries to the fencing is also the injury of the muscles of the upper thighs, often causing pain in the groin. Such aches mean that the athlete should stop training within a period of two weeks and up to one month.

One of the main injuries in martial arts such as tae kwon do, karate, muay thai, kung fu, MMA etc. is also a ankle joint luxation. In such an injury, swelling of the ankle joint will very quickly occur, so it is important to immediately put on a cold compression. In tae kwon do (capoeira, as well as some kung fu and karate styles) there are also frequent injuries during various jumps, with muscle fibers of the quadriceps femoris damages happening more often, and sometimes there is Achilles tendon rupture due to strong muscular contraction of muscle soleus. Also, the knee joint may be sprained, which may even hurt meniscus. In meniscal injuries, as well as in Achilles tendon rupture, the time to repair the injury can last from three to four months. There are various head injuries in martial arts. The head is a desirable goal because a well-directed blow to the head often knocks the opponent down. Also, a blow that causes a short-term loss of consciousness of the opponent often leads to victory. In boxing a strike that affects the head primarily causes the movement of the head, then the movement of the brain mass. These moves are not simultaneous. In the first stage the skeleton of the skull is moved, and then only the brain mass follows that movement. Sometimes frequent strokes in the eye cause an injury similar to wrestling – othematoma or deformation of the outer ear. It has been also found that with some athletes, due to frequent head injuries, as well as a greater number of ear blows, this causes partial hearing loss. During a long-standing sports career, some professional fighters in some martial arts go through hundreds of fights in which they gain thousands of stronger or weaker blows in their heads. Similarly, although something to a lesser extent, happens to amateurs. The consequences of frequent brain shaking are small brain tissue damages. The feature of brain tissue is that it has very little tendency to heal, and there is no regeneration of specific tissue at all. Due to the frequency of all these injuries, in some of the combatants, later, there are gradual changes in the brain structure, which ultimately cause the known condition first described by Dr. Martland, followed by Dr. Carrel, Dr. Muller, Dr. Jokl, Dr. Cava, as well as many other sports doctors. So today we usually deal with the post-traumatic encephalopathy of boxers. Some time ago it was considered that this damage was mostly connected only to boxers, but today it is known that the same damage affects savate fighters (French boxing), kick boxing fighters, Muay Thai fighters, MMA fighters (UFC) as well as some other ones. According to Dr. Steinhaus, even about 7% of all fighters (competitors) show signs of milder, and about 5% of the fighters are signs of chronic post-traumatic encephalopathy. Various experts in martial arts, for example, various trainers, sports doctors, sports workers, sports journalists, and athletes themselves in various countries have given this phenomenon or syndrome different, more or less descriptive names. Everyone that has a better martial art knowledge, as well as who is a better trainer, sports physician or experienced fighter (competitor), notices these psychological changes of the fighter (contestant), but does not often recognize, misunderstands it, or deliberately ignores its meaning. When we feel anxious or panic, our physiological stability is thrown off balance. Our heart rate increases, we hyperventilate or hold our breath. This wastes a lot of energy and affects not only our strength, but also our mobility and agility. The consequences can be fatal. The ability to differentiate and control emotions and the ability to differentiate from emotion control are crucial. The way we react to the emotional level determines whether we turn out to be warriors. According to the principle of biofeedback, control follows awareness. The more aware we are of our feelings in confrontations and confrontations, the better we can control our reactions and act appropriately. s the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) move into Gaza, they face an enemy that recently launched a cowardly attack on women, children, civilians and the elderly. Hamas has demonstrated their inability to fight nobly. They raise their children with hatred and to willingly sacrifice their lives to kill others. They position their missile launchers near schools and hide their bases of operations under hospitals. They consistently lie and prevent a free press from reporting, instead falsifying the tallies of innocents killed during the IDF’s raids on strategic Hamas outposts. To add insult to injury, many ‘reputable’ news outlets in Europe and the United States more than willingly parrot these numbers, despite the preponderance of evidence that the IDF has gone to extreme lengths to prevent the death of innocents through evacuation efforts and bringing in translators and medical professionals to help support those in need in hostile territory.

Conflicts in the Middle East are nothing new, throughout history there have been numerous territorial claims, religious conflicts and conquests for expansion. Even in antiquity, there had been dignity in the conflicts and not the ignominious attacks on non-combatants that is seen by Hamas’ actions. During the third crusades between 1189 and 1192, Richard the Lionheart and Saladin faced each other in a number of battles. It is said that Saladin sent provisions and fruits to Richard when he arrived and that on one occasion, upon seeing Richard’s horse being killed from under him, Saladin had his servant rush into the battle to provide Richard with another horse. The integrity that Saladin conducted his operations was likely a factor in Richard agreeing to a truce (the only peace agreement in all the crusades) which left Saladin in control of Jerusalem at the time, despite Richard’s success in all the battles that were fought.

Unfortunately, the IDF cannot face Hamas face-to-face, because Hamas intentionally uses the population that they are responsible for as expendable pawns in their ideologically twisted campaign of violence, rape and brutality. Hamas’ kidnapping of non-combatants and intentional and brutal murder of innocents lies in stark contrast from the IDF’s focus on rooting out evil while doing as little harm to those who were not involved in the extremist activities on October 7th.

The Geneva Convention was established to set boundaries on conflict to ensure human rights are respected, essentially putting some guidelines around what dignity in battle means and to help minimize the loss of innocent life. So far, Hamas has broken numerous tenets of the agreement in their brazen and brutal attack on innocent lives as well as their continued disregard for the principles laid out, positioning military assets in residential areas, preventing the movement of non-combatants from the warzone and using their own population as expendable lives in their fight for popular opinion. While the IDF would like a dignified war with Hamas, most of the senior leadership of the terrorist group hides out in Qatar, Lebanon or other supporting countries and Hamas combatants hide out in tunnels that they use for themselves instead of for the innocent population. Today, there is no dignity in this combat and the cowardice of Hamas is an indication of how future battles will be fought if they are allowed to get away with hiding behind their own citizens to wage a war of public opinion against Israel. The longer we allow ourselves to be deceived by their horrific actions and give them a pass, the more we will see innocents continue to be used as pawns in future wars. It is up to us to stand up and speak out against Hamas’ atrocities and cowardly attacks. As warriors we must demand “Tokku” in combat, so that battles can be fought with integrity, not cowardice.

COMMANDO KRAV MAGA’S DEVASTATING TACTICS: SURVIVING THE STREET (part 1) With the continuing growth of events such as the UFC, BODOG, K1 and other fight sports, MMA has skyrocketed in popularity. There’s nothing that gives you the thrill, enthusiasm and adrenaline pump like watching two modern day gladiators put on a display of power, explosiveness and skill in the ring or the Octagon. These MMA athletes display devastating strikes, sound ground work and masterful submissions. MMA athletes are well rounded making this sport appear to be the most effective form of self defense – or is it? After watching MMA competitions, many of us are driven to believe that in order to be best prepared for a street fight, we should train like these fighters – develop some powerful kicks and punches along with a solid ground game and we can take on anyone. Theoretically, this makes sense but only if there are no other variables. MMA events are still governed by set rules, a referee and highly trained medical professionals to make sure that fighters are still safe. Unfortunately, these constants don’t apply in a bar fight, street attack or car-jacking. Now imagine if you just finished training at your local fight gym and you decide to walk over to a nearby store and grab a power bar to replenish yourself. As you walk out of the store, someone stops you asking for money. Suddenly, you notice two people standing in front of you. It’s clear they want your wallet and will do anything to get it. As one guy starts to attack you, you fight back giving him a solid roundhouse to the leg and punch to the head. His friend jumps you from behind and takes you to the ground. At this point, you’re comfortable with your ground game and start to work your way into a beautiful armbar. You feel a few punches from behind so you get up. The two thugs quickly run away and you feel pretty good about yourself. Suddenly, there’s a numb pain in your back and you see blood running down your shirt. You were stabbed 3 times and didn’t even know it. The worst part is that there are no medical professionals or referees around to help you. No matter how well trained you are for the ring, the street is completely different. There are no rules so your reaction has to be much quicker with deadlier results. The longer you draw out a fight, the more likely you will end up in the hospital or worse, the morgue.

It has been proven that under extreme stress, any movement that involves more than 2 gross motor skills most likely won’t work. As well, it is very hard to remember any technique that involves more than 5 or 6 components. When panic and adrenaline take over, confusion is one of the first feelings to set in. Any complex moves are sure to get you shot, stabbed or killed in real life. That is why Commando Krav Maga emphasizes simplicity. Most of the techniques taught within the CKM system are universal. They can be performed on the left, right, front or back. One example is a gun disarming technique in CKM known as the quick release. The quick release can be performed whether the gun is pointed at your head, chest, back or sides of your body. As well, it doesn’t matter if the attacker is holding the gun with his left hand, right hand or both hands. The technique will work regardless of how the attacker is facing you. This is extremely important because most people can only perform simple functions under stress. However, don’t let the simplicity of the techniques fool you. The ingenuity of developing techniques that are simple to comprehend and perform under stressful circumstances took many years of research. Much study was put into the biomechanics of the human body. Research was also performed on the effects of physical performance under stress. Through trial and error, many techniques were modified to be as effective as possible. At the same time, many complex moves were altogether eliminated. The purpose was to create a highly effective system that was easy to learn. Whether you’re a working professional, stay at home mom or a practicing martial artist, CKM will allow you to better protect yourself regardless of your skill level. Maximum Damage/Minimum Time On the street, the longer you remain in a confrontation, the more deadly the outcome. There is no time to waste on punishing your attacker. There is no “feeling out” process that you would see in a martial arts competition. Instead, there is only action and reaction. As soon as someone attacks you, you need to debilitate the attacker immediately. With little time to engage and disengage, you must create maximum damage as quickly as possible. That is why many of the tactics and techniques in Commando Krav Maga utilizes defense as offense. In a street confrontation, the only assumption you can make is that the attacker will do anything to get what they want. Whether they want money, information or want to hurt you for some reason, this is not a friendly sparring session. In CKM, you are trained to react immediately. Although your initial reaction should be to disengage or avoid the confrontation, there are many situations where you don’t have a choice. That’s when you must engage, deliver your deadly offensive tactics while defending yourself and disengage to safety. During the engagement process, CKM trains you to take advantage of all the weakness and pressure points of your attacker. This includes eye gouges, groin strikes, throat strikes, ripping the attacker’s Adam’s Apple, biting or any other effective means to take down your assailant. Although these tactics sound dirty, remember that there are no rules in the street. The attacker wouldn’t hesitate to hurt you so you need to have the same mentality. Imagine that you are enjoying an evening out with your friends. During the evening, an argument ensues between one of your friends and a stranger. You try to dissuade the situation only to find that the other person has pulled out a knife and is threatening to stab you. Knives are a nasty weapon and very personal. Anyone who brandishes a knife in your face can seriously hurt or kill you. That’s why all of the knife defense tactics in CKM deliver deadly results. If you perform a CKM knife takedown, it usually means breaking the arm of your attacker as they land on their face in a matter of seconds. Due to these severe circumstances, knife defense drills in CKM are practiced with extreme caution. In Commando Krav Maga training, you will see many of these devastating moves being utilized. Although it may seem extremely brutal, CKM practitioners train for the street where you will need whatever advantage you have to survive. Your attacker can be bigger, stronger and faster than you but if you train under these conditions, you will be better conditioned for real life encounters.
