The knife is the most dangerous and feared weapon in a fight. Very easy to get and very often deadly. teacher I had, told me that wisdom was seeing the face and the back of the same thing at the same time. SunTsu, whom I have always admired, put it another way: "One must know how to see the advantages inherent in the disadvantages and the disadvantages inherent in the advantages." Nothing is univocal, everything carries in itself the essential polarity, light and shadow are interdependent and always walk in company. Everyone's life unfolds in this way, in this magnificent display of gray areas, while we walk immersed in doubts, relying on selected certainties, often anecdotal, like castaways clinging to a drifting wood. There are those who, adoring certainties, cultivate them to the point of arrogance or fanaticism; there are those who, on the contrary, live immersed in constant doubt, and terrified by the shock caused by the terror of living, submerge themselves in the strangeness and amazement of life, feeling themselves on a constant tightrope. Optimists and pessimists thus share their positions, each with its advantages, each with its disadvantages. Expansive personalities are so, in quantity, because of the abundant energy they possess. To quote SunTsu again, one defends when one's forces are few, and attacks when one's forces are many. Withdrawn personalities attack only as a reaction, for they prefer to keep violence under control and rely much more on their intelligence than on their strength. Since everything tends to saturate with its own energy until it reaches its limit, we tend to behave predictably within the framework of our natures. The routines that define humans are often chosen within the framework of these predefined structures, so the dichotomy of structure and function follows the preestablished rule of feedback. The same happens with cycles, life in its succession has its own seasons, and no one escapes this paradigm. But if wisdom is to see the face and the back of the same thing at the same time, we must, at the only time in our lives when such a state can happen to us, that is, in old age, be able to see also one extreme within the other. Consequently, only the wise will be able to perceive the essence of Summer, in the heart of winter.

Old Age and Wisdom The cycles of becoming flicker the experience of life in a sea of fleeting sensations, which unfold behind the changes; death, life, regeneration, or destruction, mutatis mutandis, we die to what we are, to be what we have not yet been able to become. My mother used to tell me: Who is that lady who stares at me in the mirror trying to recognize me? No one feels, beyond the aches and pains, that he or she has ceased to be who he or she was. Nature, always compassionate, gives us with the years the gift of farsightedness, so that what is distant we can see, but what is near is blurred. It thus prepares us to abandon, to downplay the importance of the immediate, to focus on the invisible and to blur our reflection in the mirror. The changes of the spirit are much more recondite than those of the matter, to take perspective from our essence on itself, is a Herculean act; it is the facts and the others, which reflect these transformations; wisdom, if it arrives, does it on tiptoe, like a haven of peace, in the eye of the hurricane and in the aftermath of life. Youth and wisdom are opposed, which does not mean that reason always falls on the side of the old. Every time belongs to those who sow it with their changes, their sweat and their blood. Wisdom is a silent thing; it flees from outburst and scenography; it resembles a silent spring, much more than a plentiful river. It loves prudence and silence, rather than dispute and controversy, leaving to youth the impetuous vehemence of imposing itself on another. "From the old man... The advice!" goes the saying. And to continue the couplet, nowadays it is time to add... "Now.... Not even that!" The nefarious cult of youth in our societies leads the "new non-old" to ridicule, to the pantomime of hiding what they are. Scalpels in hand, anachronistic activities, they replace the emptiness of that example of gallantry and reciedumbre that our grandparents were, as something outdated and extemporaneous. Striving to be up to date, many incur in a late hedonism, while the body endures, which is not enough. Wisdom is calm, it is temperance, it is distance. It is to discover the importance of the small, and from there, eventually and without haste, to reach the great; thus, without pretensions, with calm, placidity and contemplation. Wisdom rhymes more with the verb to be than with the verb to do. To be wise in the noisy city environment is a complex task, surrounded by spurious stimuli that drag you to the present, to the resounding confusion of crowding and much. Saturate the senses, hinders everyone, but when your brain lowers its pulse, it is much more. Therefore, when the time comes, there is no other choice, nor better fortune, than to follow, as Don Miguel de Cervantes said, "the hidden path, where the few wise men, who have been in the world, have gone."

GRACIE JIU-JITSU - ADVANCED 1 “Gracie Jiu-Jitsu – Made by Vacirca Brothers” THE CIRCLE BEGINS TO CLOSE Before I introduce my two assistants for this new instructional video, I would like to tell a little about our work and the video. In 1996, when together with my brother Demetrio I put on paper the first Gracie Concepts® training program and the necessary organizational structure, we started teaching Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in addition to Muay Thai and PFS/Filipino Kali. We founded our commercial school on July 16, 1995, after first trying with others in the form of school partnerships and clubs, but the time was right to have “our own four walls” to dedicate ourselves completely to martial arts instruction. We had initially integrated Gracie Jiu-Jitsu into our JKD grappling lessons because we were still working on it ourselves (since the late 80's) and did not want to represent it officially yet, even though the demand was asking more and more of us. Also our Jiu-Jitsu teachers in California and Brazil wanted us to go this way and encouraged us to do so, but for Demetrio and me the time was not yet ripe.

hen we first put the program on paper and accurately recorded the techniques in a photo series with our friend Enrico Gargiulo, the first official Instructor's Manual was born. Most people reacted positively to the program and so the first generation of Gracie Concepts® instructors was born, both nationally and internationally. Sure, there were criticisms, but they came from the very people who always wanted a written program. We knew why we did it, and today that is exactly what the new generations are getting from us. In many ways, the new generations were not only the new fuel for us and the whole Vacirca Brothers network in Europe, but they also became the better allies because they approached the whole thing with an open mind. In Europe there is a generation of BJJ schools that come from Judo and/or Wrestling where the coach has done a few seminars or maybe even a visit or two to the US or Brazil. They then think they are offering real BJJ, but they are still where they were 20 years ago, in their old Judo/Wrestling soup. I always say, “In the world of the blind, the one-eyed man is king!”; that's still true today, even though we have so much more internet, most just copy what's already there and call it something else instead of really studying the material and learning at the source. The business is in the foreground and nothing else. In Zurich, or rather in the whole of Switzerland, as many new BJJ schools are opened every year as are closed half a year later.

Do you really think that just because you have trained with Roger Gracie for a few hours that you can teach Jiu-Jitsu like Roger Gracie? No, you don't! To be a Roger Gracie, Royce Gracie, Royler Gracie.... you need decades of training, full commitment, and I also believe the right source to feed yourself with the necessary stuff. If you want to achieve something, you must put in the effort. It is not enough to copy an idea. I'm happy to give any of you my black belt if you commit to doing as much for Gracie Jiu-Jitsu as I do every day. The belt does not make you a qualified and professional instructor, guaranteed, and that is true in all martial arts, not just Jiu-Jitsu! Someone who gets a black belt in BJJ after five or six years may be a good (black belt) athlete, but certainly not an experienced instructor - someone I would entrust my members to. An athlete is not an instructor, even if he means well!

Gracie Advanced 1: The circle begins to close… After publishing last year the instructional video with my brother Demetrio, in which we presented the “Gracie Intermediate” program, it is now time to publish this latest Gracie Concepts® work. Thanks to the collaboration with Alfredo Tucci and Budo - Martial Arts International it comes to you in these days. We provide you with the material that connects the classes between the purple and the brown belt. In our rotation program it is the classes 35 to 44. It is again many scenarios and techniques that we have added new and of course some new information. Thanks to my two excellent assistants and Gracie Concepts® ambassadors Gregor Bytomski from Öhringen and Grigori Winizki from Leipzig, we can again offer you a masterpiece, which certainly not only our Gracie Jiu-Jitsu members will acquire. I am very pleased to be able to present this today. And now we come to Gregor and Grigori, who offer the Gracie Concepts® “Instructor Certification Program” under my personal direction in their respective schools, in Öhringen and Leipzig (Germany), on continuous weekends - throughout the year. Gregor Bytomski: My Search for Authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu… Today I am 41 years old, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu brown belt holder and instructor under Prof. Franco Vacirca. My adventure with martial arts began when I was still in elementary school. As a child I lived near the wrestling club “Unia Raciborz”, where I first met the mat and learned my first throws. As a teenager I did some training sessions in boxing. Later, when I was about 16 years old, a small, very old paperback book entitled “Jiu-Jitsu for self-defense” fell into my hands. I believe that was the catalyst for my current love of authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

At the age of 21 I moved with my family from Poland to Germany. Here I started to train again and decided for kickboxing. After two years of Kickboxing I started with Judo at TSV Künzelsau. There I also took part in many tournaments and was able to learn a lot of new things in the competition area. One of my biggest successes was the third place at the Württemberg Individual Championships in 2012. During this time I also attended many training courses to learn from the best, including Frank Wieneke and the Bundesliga Judoka from Niederstetten. In Poland, in my hometown Ratibor, the “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Club Lamator” was founded, where some of my friends also started to train. I was fascinated when I got to know this martial art myself on this way. At home I immediately started looking for a BJJ school, which unfortunately remained unsuccessful for a long time. I kept getting the feeling that most people didn't know anything about BJJ (or Vale Tudo). Most of the time I was just looked at funny and sometimes laughed at. At that time there was also not yet the possibility to find something via social media.

My enthusiasm did not diminish, on the contrary, it grew and grew. At some point, I began to fight as if I were doing Jiu-Jitsu during Randori (Jap. Sparring) in Judo training. It was then no longer about holds, but really about submission. I also tried to implement the techniques as if I didn't have a Gi jacket on, those were my first attempts to fight without a Gi. At some point the internet came and the search finally became easier. So I started attending BJJ and Luta-Livre seminars everywhere. I also started to train in the “BJJ Club Lamator” whenever I could. Soon also came the time when I participated in various grappling tournaments, without belonging to a team, but with my wife by my side. One day, a colleague at work told me about the Alphasportschule in Grünsfeld and about head coach Martin Vath. It didn't take long before I was standing on Martin's doorstep. I didn't even care about the long car ride because I had one big dream. With him I finally started to train BJJ regularly. It did not take long, and I also trained MMA with Martin. Since then I have won several medals in different disciplines (MMA, Shooto, Grappling and BJJ). One day a friend approached me and asked me if I would like to teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at his school, the Defense Club in Öhringen. I didn't have to think about it for long and accepted immediately. Finally the chance had come to bring BJJ to our region. Since then we have grown together into a great team.

Everything was perfect, but I still had this special need. I knew all along that modern BJJ, which is taught almost everywhere today, was not yet what I was really looking for. I got myself several books, including Prof. Franco Vacirca's book “The Sons of Maeda”. I was immediately fascinated by this book and wished so much to have a teacher of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu by my side. After reading the book, I dared to contact Franco personally via Instagram and thank him for the great book. A short time later I received a reply from Prof. Vacirca and so began our nice communication. I ventured to Zurich to attend the ICP course for a weekend. I was enthusiastic about Franco. He was exactly the guy I had been looking for all these years. Franco's friendliness, his down to earth attitude and most of all his knowledge. It just captivated me, it really fit, and everything was perfect. When the two days were over, I was very sad. I felt like a child who was missing something. But before I left, I dared to ask the one question: “.... Franco, would you accept me as a student?” At that moment I really felt like a child. But it was the emotions that took over in me at that moment. I couldn't go home without asking. When the answer came “Yes!” I was overjoyed, something had happened that I had never expected. I am very proud to have Franco as a friend and teacher and to learn from him regularly. We attend Franco's seminars as often as possible and regularly travel to him in Zurich for the ICPs. I think my greatest success is that despite many difficulties I never gave up and am now living my dream of Gracie JiuJitsu and have my friend Prof. Franco Vacirca by my side. The fact that I can now offer the ICP courses in Öhringen and thus promote authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in my region is also a great personal challenge. At this point I would like to thank my wife, who has supported me all these years and still does. As my friend and teacher says: “KEEP IT REAL”!

Grigori Winizki: About me and my way to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu… I am 36 years old and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu brown belt holder and instructor under Prof. Franco Vacirca. Martial arts have always determined and greatly influenced my life. Already at the age of four I trained Kyokushinkai Karate and Boxing with my father in our Dojo at home. My father was an enthusiastic martial artist himself. He trained every day and naturally wanted to pass this passion on to his son. In 2003 I moved with my parents from Kyrgyzstan to Germany. In my new home country it didn't take me long to find a new Dojo with like-minded people and I was active again relatively quickly. Via Kyokushinkai Karate I came to K1 and later to Freefight: In the beginning of 2000 there was the Freefight event series FFC in Leipzig and there I could watch the fights live in the Octagon. My friend and training buddy Artjom Kotelewetz was fighting there and had already made a name for himself, so we founded our own Freefight group.

The organizer of the FFC was also the head coach of the famous “Bushido Free-Fight Team” and MMA legend Marko Zschörner. One day I asked Artjom to take me to training, and right after that Marko Zschörner invited me to train again. Having always wanted to train close to reality, I was immediately inspired by Freefight, which I believe is the true Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (of the Gracie family). As a young boy, at the age of seven, I had already seen VHS tapes of the first UFC events where Royce Gracie defeated all his opponents. I was very impressed by his calmness, his determination, and his way of fighting. But to see that live and especially to fight myself was something completely different and I enjoyed it very much. So it happened that after only three months of training I had my first FFC fight. Zschörner is a very experienced and competent BJJ black belt with a strong charisma. With him I got a solid base and successfully passed the exam for blue belt (Marcelo Giudici BJJ) in March 2015. It was a turbulent and hard time, but for which I am very grateful, because it has shaped me exceptionally as a fighter.

Since then I regularly participate in Freefight and MMA fights. Through Kyokushin Budokai, I also had the honor of meeting the legend, Jon Bluming. As a member of the ISKA's K-1 National Team, I was able to earn 2nd place at the K-1 World Championships in London. In 2013, I signed up for the Shidokan European Open and made my debut in the style. That's how I came to Shidokan and met Shihan Peter Angerer (German Top Team). He supported me on my way, which meant a lot to me as a fighter. For family reasons I was often in Reutlingen at that time and finally asked him if I could train with him in the German Top Team HQ. The way he trained me improved my fighting style and I reached a higher fighter mindset. His blend of Karate and Jiu-Jitsu was exactly what I was always looking for. I traveled a lot with him and fought in many events. I had been a coach for a long time and now had the opportunity to pursue my passion, teaching, even more. In 2017, I founded my own school in Leipzig. My mentor and trainer, Shihan Peter, has supported me fully. He often told me about his career, his successes, and defeats, and of course about his teachers. So I learned more about Professor Franco Vacirca and wanted to meet him personally.

“Reduce to Essence”, says Prof. Franco, in recent years I have become even more involved with Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and thanks to Franco Vacirca's Gracie Concepts® methods, the lear ning process has become even more interesting and effective. I think it is great that he has brought structure to BJJ. I am very proud to have Franco as a friend and teacher and to learn from him regularly. With him there is a clear answer to every question and the tactics and techniques are based on sound logic. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a complete system for me. On the one hand it is a strong base for such a hard sport like Mixed Martial Arts, on the other hand the techniques are super dosed, and everyone can participate. So there is something for everyone! Jiu-Jitsu can save lives. Yes, exactly this authentic Jiu-Jitsu that Gracie Concepts teaches us. And I can say it should be taught even more in the security structures. Also in schools, among children and young people. What makes it even more attractive is its own philosophy and the strong history of the real fighter. It is a martial art based on the reality of fighting and combines it with the culture of a real Budo practitioner, and this is what makes it particularly popular in today's world. Since 2022, I have been allowed to give the instructor courses in my region as an official Gracie Concepts Ambassador. A great honor and with it a great responsibility, which I gladly accept. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is for me the ideal mixture of everything I can imagine under combat: Selfdefense, competition, fitness, health, attitude towards life, mindset. A real combat is total CHAOS. Under the effects of adrenaline many techniques that we have practiced for years simply do not work or do not work. the aggressor can attack us with anything or unpredictably, with all his fury. We must train things that are easy to practice and learn, and above all effective. and this is where training concepts and combat principles come into play. Guro Markus Gottel presents a basic and fundamental concept of Grandmaster Rene Latosa's Escrima: "The Box", a tool that gives us a noticeable security when Sparring in a controlled manner, improves our balance and increases our ability to act safely, quickly and more effectively. The idea of "The Box" can be transmitted to all bladed weapons, including empty hand practice. The teachings of Grand Master Rene Latosa are based on the use of principles for combat and concepts for training. In this way technique is important but is relegated to the background. The first is the natural teaching of how to use the body, taking advantage of the concepts as a tool for all exercises and movements. There is no magic or secret techniques, just an understanding of the physical workings. Once we grasp those ideas we can explore, evolve and improve in Escrima or other Martial Arts constantly.

Muay Boran Forms: all-round training tool for Nak Muay The thai word rai ram, ร่าย รำ means to dance. In Siamese armed or unarmed martial arts this same word has a broader meaning: in fact, it refers to a sequence of pr earranged offensive and defensive movements that a martial artist executes solo or with a partner. This practice is of paramount importance for a practitioner who wants to reach the core of the martial art of his choice. The essence of oriental fighting systems are often embedded into prearranged sets: however, the vital information that the creator of a sequence includes in its work is always encrypted and without possessing the key, the secrets of a form will remain concealed for the average martial artist. In order to better understand the concept of pr ear ranged fighting sets, the first element to be clarified is the reason why forms are created by knowledgeable martial arts masters.

ccording to Muay Thai master Chaisawat Tienviboon martial dancing exists in the fighting arts of every nation: the main reason for this is the need to preserve combat strategies, tactics and techniques for future generations of practitioners. Every Master considers the combat principles he has learned and tested something very precious, worth of being preserved and kept secret until he meets the right students that could inherit his art. For this reason, the various offensive and defensive maneuvers are coherently organised in a set of movements that can be rehearsed over and over again. All trainee can experiment on their own thus developing the right body mechanics connected to their fighting system. However, only the master who created the sequence will hold the key to fully understand the combative principles hidden in his form: the various applications of each position of the martial dance, without his explanations, will have no fighting meaning and the Rai Ram will be just that, a beautiful dance. Some students will simply have no patience and, without understanding the high value of forms training, will discard this practice as being useless for combat. This is a big mistake since a daily practice of fighting sequences bring a tangible enhancement of a martial artist’s technical and physical attributes. Solo forms training and the practice of combat applications with a partner are two sides of the same coin. Solo training (image 1) builds the correct body mechanics needed to execute each step, parry, dodge, single attack or combination with speed, grace, force, balance, coordination. Partner training (image 2) is vital to develop a

sense of distance from the opponent and a good timing, both crucial attributes to apply the techniques included in the form. The sparring partner can also wear mitts and other protective equipment (image 3) in order to allow the executor to unleash his full power on the target: impact training is the best way to enhance the force of all the attacking techniques that are included in a given form.

Combat Muay Boran form The sequence is composed of 81 movements, each one with more than a single “combative meaning”. The fighting techniques (postures) included in this set belong to Chern Muay style: in fact, they stress the aggressive use of the nine body weapons (Nawarthawoot) to punch, kick, knee, elbow, head-butt, throw, overlay, catch, break. Moreover, the basics of all the traditional

defensive systems are included in the form. Many of the fighting principles included in this form come from the three main regional styles of Muay: Korat, Lopburi, Chaiya. The techniques trained and emphasized by each style reflect the essence of that style: the Combat Muay Boran martial system is based on realistic, practical, powerful applications of the ancient Siamese combat strategies. Some of the technical features of the Combat Muay Boran sequence are as follows: Combinations of strikes. Several combinations of strikes executed with the same weapon or with different body weapons are included. The concept of striking combinations is fundamental in Combat Muay Boran: in fact, the best way to successfully reach an opponent’s weak spots is by combinations of strikes (Phasom Muay). The way strikes are combined makes the difference between an expert fighter and a novice: the best fighters deliver blows in series, strikes are linked in a natural manner, flowing smoothly one after the other. This form teaches the trainee to “think in combinations” instead of getting into the habit of throwing one strike and then wait and see what happens. Defense against multiple attacks. Also the ability to block and counter multiple attacks is considered vital in order to develop realistic combative instincts. The first attack may be the beginning of a series of two or more blows. Being formatted to care about the first stroke only can lead to dangerous habits. Far from being a stylized sequence of non-sense gestures this form prepares those who train it seriously for the harsh reality of combat, creating sound combative reflexes. Grappling techniques. Muay Thai is the art of attacking and defending with the use of nine body weapons (hands, legs, knees, elbows and head).

However, a part of the ancient art of thai grappling (Muay Pram) has always being included in every thai boxer’s arsenal. Ancient Muay (Muay Boran) was rich in holding, throwing and joint locking techniques: the Combat Muay Boran form includes some of those powerful maneuvers (image 4). By working this form, multi-skilled fighters will be created, midway between pure strikers and pure grapplers.

How to train the Combat Muay Boran form Step 1: memorize the correct sequence. Hundreds of slow executions of the entire form are needed at this stage of the lear ning process. The goal is to perform the whole set without conscious effort, i.e., without stopping to think: what’s next? This stage can take a few months to a year, according to the level of proficiency of the trainee. Step 2: divide the sequence into blocks of techniques and work each block separately. In order to really possess the form, every Combat Muay Boran student must go through this stage. This breakdown can be easily done because this form is conceived to be split if need be, without losing its fighting rationale. Then, the shorter portions of the sequence must be dissected, analysed and learned until becoming second nature. This is the most important part of the learning process that should be undertaken with the careful supervision of an expert Combat Muay Boran teacher.

Step 3: work on the martial applications of each posture, with a sparring partner and with a pad man. Timing, sense of distance, tactile sensitivity and a better understanding of the fighting principles of each technique’s applications are developed with the cooperation of a sparring partner. A pad man is needed to express and enhance the real power of each offensive maneuver learned through solo practice of the sequence. Step 4: rehearse the whole sequence or the shorter blocks at real speed for a scheduled number of times. At this stage the sense of enemy (the ability to visualize an opponent) must already be well developed and every offensive or defensive maneuver should express high battle energy (Phalang Yuth). Fighting and dancing finally become a single artistic and potentially destructive form of expression. A form is a compendium of fighting techniques, a smart system of preservation and transmission of battletested martial strategies and tactics: however, for a sincere and dedicated practitioner a form represents an infinite source of stimuli that reveals its facets in ever changing ways. In fact, just like a good book that seems to “change” according to the mood of the reader, a combat form adapts to the executor giving him a different feeling each time he performs it. In the words of Karate

Master Kenwa Mabuni: “A form is not fixed or immoveable. Like water, it's ever changing and fits itself to the shape of the vessel containing it.” Because of this, practicing the Combat Muay Boran form with the right spirit on a daily basis, nourishes the body and mind of a Nak Muay with the right technical and spiritual “food”. A Muay Boran practitioner will greatly benefit from this practice: his skill and his fighting spirit will be enhanced and step by step his understanding of the secrets of the Art will be heightened.

身圧蘇生 Miatsu Sosei - Reanimation and resuscitation Anyone who has studied in a serious, traditional school knows that lessons were not limited to technical collections. Much more than that, what was known as 身圧蘇生 Miatsu Sosei was studied. Many people have translated 身圧蘇生 Miatsu Sosei as first aid. In fact, the latter may be a version of the idea behind this technique. Its correct translation would be body pressure resuscitation.

f we look at it from a conventional perspective, "first aid are interventions that should be performed quickly, immediately after an accident or sudden illness, with the aim of preventing the problem from worsening until a specialized service arrives on the scene. These interventions are very important because they can prevent complications and even the death of a person." 身圧蘇生 Miatsu Sosei is a set of simple techniques applied more particularly to methods used in martial arts, to treat various cases, especially syncope that can arise during exercise on the tatami. It should be noted that it differs greatly from the techniques studied in 医術 Ijutsu (medicine). The first aid techniques developed by traditional Western medicine are of great importance to everyday life. Many of these ancestral techniques have come into the modern arts under the name "Kappo" (resuscitation method). It seems, especially from talking to judo teachers, that this technique refers to the method used to resuscitate a judoka who loses consciousness due to strangulation or projection. Artificial resuscitation is performed to induce movement of the chest, stomach and back, thus restoring normal breathing. In addition to Sasoi-katsu (inductive method) used to open the chest, there are also Eri-katsu (flap method) and So-katsu (compound method). Judo consists of "Sappo" (death methods) and "Kappo" (resuscitation method), which has come to be called "judotherapy", both of which are mastered by experienced judo practitioners. Unlike modern methods, according to scholars, the 身圧蘇生 Miatsu Sosei techniques studied in Ogawa Sensei's school have their origin in China, specifically in the Chou era. The Chou era was a period of socio-political equilibrium, in a system similar to European feudalism. It was an era of peace that ended in 771 B.C., with the gradual loss of imperial power after a series of succession struggles, until 481 B.C., when the period called the "Warring States" began. In them there was a marked moral decline, the old orders and rules lost their meaning and the concept of "honor" no longer existed, which even included the ethics of war, whose objective was no longer the defeat of the enemy, but his total annihilation. These small warring states created a chaotic world and the stable period of the early Chou era came to be regarded and remembered as an idyllic time. Confucius was born in this turbulent period and his philosophy would seek the idyllic time of harmony and peace of the early Chou era. In 221 B.C. the Ch'in state achieved supremacy over the others and unified China. The new king, Shih Huang Ti, rejected the remaining feudal values and founded a state based on the growth of material wealth and military power, adopting the

thinking of the legalists, who advocated a rigid system of laws, standardizing weights, measures and even the width of roads. Shih Huang Ti ordered the burning of all literature that was not scientific or religious, but died 11 years after taking power, thus initiating the Han era. During the Chou era, the cause of misfortune, previously based on ancestors and their influence on the living, began to take into account the perception that "demons" had importance in daily life.

Harmony in relationships would no longer be maintained by the ancestors and myths were created that recognized "demons" exerting evil influences on man. Wu shamans grew in importance. These shamans used their access to higher spirits to control demons through exorcisms, usually practiced with swords and spears. Certain times or days were assigned as the most appropriate for shamanic rituals. Talismans were used, which were burned and administered in the

form of potions, as well as medicinal drugs that served to expel demons from the body, especially poisons, used as amulets or incense, plants that looked like weapons or whose name could be associated with one of them. Unlike the medicine of the Shang era, respect for rules, rites and social conventions did not constitute protection against disease. A rudimentary form of acupuncture emerged, in which needles shaped like exorcising swords were inserted or pressed into thirteen specific points on the surface of the skin to treat diseases caused by demons. The aim of this form of acupuncture was not to treat the diseases themselves, but to expel and combat demons. There is no evidence of therapeutic acupuncture in any real sense before 90 BC.

Reflex medicine Reflex correspondence, in the case of Chinese medicine, means recognizing a system in which phenomena are qualified according to principles, and phenomena of equal qualification have the power to influence each other. - Cause-effect relationships between corresponding phenomena - Cause-effect relationships between noncorresponding phenomena If certain energies are classified as yang, for example, acting on one yang point causes a similar effect on another yang point, because both belong to the same systematic classification. In Chinese medicine, the basic principles are "yin yang" and the "Five phases" (wu xing). The chaos existing at the time of the "Combatant States" led to the emergence of this way of thinking that characterizes this correspondence medicine, which has as its main points: the magical belief in the unity of nature; the use of the "yin yang" principles and the "five phases"; some concepts of demonic medicine; the concept of "ki" as the basis of life, "subtle material influences", according to Unschuld, a way of thinking that presents certain characteristics of the structure of the Chinese empire that was finally unified. The "yin yang" principle appears around the 4th century B.C. and is first cited in the "Shih Chi". In the book "Huang Ti Nei Ching", we find its first application in medicine. There have been several schools based on the "yin yang", some using four subdivisions, others six, and the "Nei Ching" is an attempt to integrate these various currents with the "Five Phases". A great difficulty in studying some of these concepts is that sometimes the same term can mean different concepts depending on the context in which it is inserted. Although Taoism is often cited as the basis of Chinese medicine, Unschuld demonstrates that Confucianism is the major contributor to the Systematic Correspondence Medicine way of thinking. The "Nei Ching," the foundational treatise of this medicine, quotes almost verbatim a passage from Hsun Tzu, a follower of Confucius, which states that the individual and society can be threatened by natural processes, and that their prevention would consist of taking appropriate measures. Confucianism itself adopted the "yin yang" and the "Five Phases" to explain social and political changes. Out of this period came what we know as Reflex Medicine and, consequently, the kind of thinking that influenced 身圧蘇生 Miatsu Sosei. Reflex Medicine uses warlike terms, an influence of its formative phase in the "Warring States". Evils were not

caused by demons, but by abstract or concrete influences and emanations. The concept of "ki" arose, possibly originating from the idea of the "wind" as a diseasecausing entity, an idea which in turn originated in the concept of demons. In the beginning, "ki" was nothing more than malevolent influence. Over time, it evolved into the current concept, more or less that of "subtle material influences". Health and harmony would be the consequence of few extravagances or excesses in food, sex, climate or morals. We can understand the emergence of these ideas if we take into account that, at the same time, the empire was uniting and integrating, with great metropolises, the development of trade and commerce, the need to improve the means of transport and the construction of large warehouses to guarantee the supply of cereals to the population. A complex system was born whose functioning depended on harmonized relations between its parts. General welfare depended on the exchange of resources. The medical terminology used the terms and concepts employed in the system as a whole: Zang, reservoirs or organs where the ki was stored; Fu, palaces through which the ki passed; Ching-Lo, canals that linked the whole system, as the rivers and canals of China integrated the empire. Reflecting on what happens in the irrigation of fields and the navigation of rivers, it was necessary that this flow be continuous, without obstructions or overflows that would cause failures in the distribution of goods, causing shortages in the centers of consumption and excesses in those of production. Systematic Correspondence Medicine then aims to identify and locate obstructions, deficiencies and excesses, treating them by normalizing the flow of ki in the channels (or meridians), without assessing the anatomy, but the functions involved.

Sensei in Japanese and martial arts means teacher. Sensei Rodolfo Martínez Feldman returned 53 years ago to Guatemala, from the United States where he worked for the famous computer company IBM. At the same time, he met Sensei Tamano who came from Tokyo under the direction of Seikichi Toguchi to form a school in New York of classic Okinawan karate known as Goju-Ryu, the school took the name of Shorei-Kan which means "the house of courtesy and good manners”, Goju-Ryu is the pure form of Karate as it has been practiced for more than 600 years. It must be remembered that of the original forms of Karate that originated in Okinawa, Goju-Ryu is the one that comes closest to the original spirit of Naha-te. few years ago National Geographic classified it as the second most effective martial art in the world after Chinese Kung-Fu, where all the martial arts we know today probably originate. Martínez started his Dojo in the historic center of Guatemala City, where the school was for more than 30 years, later he moved to the facilities of the historic Lawn tennis club. Just starting his Dojo a terrible car accident caused the death of Sensei Rodolfo 's wife and he is left in charge of his two small children, the karate school and his own agrochemical business.

Despite the vicissitudes of life, every night without missing even due to illness Sensei met with his students to teach the secrets of this wonderful martial art along with the use of traditional Okinawan weapons. The motto of the founder of the school more than 100 years ago, Master Toguchi, is to “turn the black belts of Shorei-Kan into successful men in their lives”, and apart from the fact that Sensei Martínez's students became experts in this martial art, it can mainly be noticed when entering the Dojo and when speaking with their students, the courtesy and education with which they treat themselves and in the same way other people, both within the school and each person in their own environments. Okinawan Karate from its origins was divided into four major schools: 1. Goju-Ryu 2. Shito-Ryu. 3. Wado-Ryu and the 4. Shotokan. However, in Sensei Miyagi of the original branch of Karate, he managed to develop a technique where he mixes in the Karate the hard and the soft skills (the spirit of Goju- Ryu) that today is applied in almost all martial arts.

Ryukyu Kingdom became a part of Japan's shogunate system of the Okinawa Islands in the year 1609. The population was subjugated under the Japanese and the use of weapons was prohibited. The population of Okinawa began to use their agricultural instruments as lethal weapons, hence the Okinawan weapons or as it is known today as the Kobudo -Kai. Instruments or weapons such as the Bo, Sai, Tonfa, Nun-Chaku. In the development of history, the Japanese, after seeing the effectiveness that the population had acquired with this type of weapons, incorporated them into their own martial arts.

The Shorei-Kan Guatemala school under the direction of Sensei Martinez continues today to teach Goju-Ryu just as he began over 500 years ago, a blend of original martial art along with the skills of using classic Okinawan weapons. That is why the students of the Shoreikan Guatemala school have the skills of classic Goju-Ryu karate and the weapons of Kobudo -Kai.

This year our school celebrates 50 years of being active in Guatemala, it represents the heart and soul of classic Okinawan Karate. We do not compete in sporting events because our school is a life discipline and the techniques can be lethal. We compete for life not for points in a sport. Sensei Martínez has two sayings that we always hear and appreciate. One is Seikichi Toguchi's wish “that our black belts be successful men and women in life”, upon seeing the large number of successful students in their careers we believe that this has been fulfilled, and the second when he says “to me the "The only times they have raised their hand to me on the street is to greet me." The First Minute of the Fight by Paul Vunak

Encounters can be broken down several different ways. In this case we are going to be emphasizing how a fight actually starts and what to do in the very first minute.

“Once these first 10-30 seconds have gone by, and we have taken several deep breaths, calmed ourselves down, and have a sense for who we are fighting, our next goal is to dictate the range and cadence of this match.”

n order to facilitate this we are going to divide a street fight into two areas. One is a mugging type energy, in this sort of fight you go from 0-100 in a nano-second. In this sort of fight one is walking down the street and they are literally mugged. This type of encounter dictates that we circumvent the preliminary analysis and pot shot, and go directly into the rally. This kind of encounter happens so quickly, in many occasions, one doesn’t even get the chance to feel that typical adrenaline dump. Like a knee jerk, if I started and you ended it, using just the rally. This particular type of fight happens less than two percent of the time. In far more cases physical

altercations are preceded with a minor vehicular collision, name calling, verbal abuse, pushing, and eventually escalating to a full blown street fight. So now let us address this type of scenario, once again which in deed will happen 95% of the time. Using Bruce Lee’s lexicon, the first twenty seconds of the match is called preliminary analysis. One’s goal during this stage is two fold. #1. Take several deep breaths and calm yourself down. While you are doing so, from the very safe distance, analyze your opponent. Get a feel for how this fella is moving. If he is squared off with his knees bent, and an obvious look on his face that, “I’m going to come at you

with a double leg takedown”, you will smell wrestler. If his hands are down, with know sense of distance or form, and swinging wild elliptical blows, you will sniff out that this guy is a street fighter. And finally if he is in some low convoluted stance with his hands on his hips, then the answer to your analysis is Karate Man. Once these first 10-30 seconds have gone by, and we have taken several deep breaths, calmed ourselves down, and have a sense for who we are fighting, our next goal is to dictate the range and cadence of this match. And the two best tools to do this are, a jab and a shuffle kick. We use these two tools because, the Jab can equate to the eyeballs, the shuffle kick can equate to the groin, both tools can be flicked out with an excellent risk to reward ratio. Again this stage of the match is called pot shooting. Picture that you have figured your opponent out and you stick him in the face with a couple of jabs, then you fake a jab, and come to the groin. Then Fake the groin, come back with a jab. This continual attack enables us to

go high-low-high, engaging progressive indirect energy. And at the same time, if either of these blows land, it could end the match. Now that we have our opponent, flinching, scared, nervous, and biting on our fakes. It is time to close this deal and go home to our family. Enter Rally… The termination of this fight that we call a rally, is best executed by a straight blast, with a succession of head butts, knees, and elbows, from a Thai clinch (sound familiar). In conclusion, the first 20 seconds of this fight we stay at a safe distance, take several deep breaths and check out this fella. Next we go to pot shotting, where we stick him with jabs and shuffle groin shots. And finally, after one of said shots connects, we follow up with the rally. And during this final stage of rally, should be our greatest explosion of punches, knees, headbutts, elbows, and face bites. And just like a math problem, if we ever want to test Bruce’s theories, just multiply your division by watching a world class MMA match. Krav Maga Attacks and Defenses with Stick, in Krav Maga The stick can be a very dangerous weapon. Baseball cleats with nails in the tips, tree branches covered with pieces of glass or barbed wire, are objects that are part of the arsenal of gangs that intend to cause the greatest possible injury to their victims. Even in our days, when firearms make the baton seem almost harmless, it signifies power in the hand of an aggr essor and intimidates. The use of the baton in Krav Maga began in the early 1940s, being used by defense groups fighting for the independence of the state of Israel, replacing the until then used and known as "Kapap". The use of fir ear ms was forbidden by mandate of the British, who dominated the r egion at that time, which transformed the stick into an instrument of defense. As everything in Krav Maga, the techniques of the cane have been created based on the laws of physics, considering the natural mobility of the human body, seeking objectivity, effectiveness of the b l o w, s a f e t y o f t h e u s e r a n d simplicity of the movements, ensuring that all people, regardless of their physical size, can perform them.

Krav Maga rom this point of view, a specific branch of Krav Maga was created for the use of the baton; attack and defense techniques for all circumstances: 1. Unarmed attack against cane; the defender being lying, sitting or standing, the attack coming from any direction. 2. Cane against cane; already with the cane in hand, the student learns to integrate it to his body as an extension of the arm, working to increase the resistance of that limb, for defense. Based on the laws of physics, the lines of force and their transmission are studied to increase the power of the blow. 3. Baton against rifle and others; military techniques and police forces. The length of the baton should be used to shorten the distance in the attack and widen the surface of the defense when necessary, directing the impact away from the body. The most commonly used batons are two, measuring approximately 60cm for the short baton and from 1m to 1.20m for the long baton. The short baton has

the necessary size to be able to hide it in the sleeve and the long baton has a size similar to that of a walking stick or a work instrument in the field. In the attacks from the front and above, the greatest power is reached at the moment when the end of the cane reaches the target, since this is when the "leverage" of the movement is greater. Therefore, in the defense movement in this type of attack, we must interrupt the leverage by approaching the aggressor and consequently decreasing the impact. In the attacks with cane that come laterally from below, the attack movement is very fast and generally, it pretends to be the first of a series, trying to penetrate and reach the most sensitive parts of the victim's body. In this case, the most appropriate is to use the legs in the defense, since they are closer to the object of aggression. The key to a successful defense is the product of a combination of three factors: Awareness, Perception and Knowledge. Awareness is needed because no matter how calm and forewarned you are, you can still be the victim of a violent

attack. You need an early perception of the event itself and the knowledge of the proper self-defense techniques, which can save your life.

But remember... When you perceive the attack, react with all your power, speed and aggressiveness, it is your life that is at stake, it is not a joke or a sports championship with rules and referees. The sooner you react, the safer your defense will be. The facts show that those who perceived and reacted to an attack at the first moment, saved their lives, while those who hesitated and avoided reacting and reversing their victim position, have fallen. Those who hesitated to reverse a life-threatening situation... lost it through resignation..., The staff is probably the oldest instrument of attack, since the time of the cavemen, but even today it constitutes a considerable threat. Krav Maga techniques were created to give anyone the possibility to defend themselves. They were tested in real situations in the

Times when it was common for a gentleman to leave the house with his cane, often animated, i.e. equipped with a hidden blade. Starting from the treatise of Master G. Martinelli (1908) "Trattato di scherma con bastone da passeggio" interpreted and integrated according to the methodology of the Nova masters Scrimia, Chiaramonte, Galvani, Girlanda and Proietti present a complete work on the use of the cane, which even today can be and valid extremely effective. For cane fencing, Martinelli draws inspiration from the Italian school of saber, with a classical approach, as well as boxing as a means of selfdefense: guard, strikes, parries, feints, spinning and circling steps, jumps, strong blows to the hand, arm, groin and terrifying jabs to the face. The stick placed in good hands is as good as a saber. Of course, it does not cut or pierce, it does not kill, but it brings to reason and, if necessary, brings even the fiercest offender to his knees.

On the history of Tai Chi To investigate the roots of Tai Chi Chuan (Tai Ji Quan) means to go back in the history of China for centuries and centuries, when the origin is lost in myth and history is intimately linked to philosophy. The term TaiCh'iChuan refers to very ancient principles that are part of the Taoist philosophy. It is a characteristic of Chinese Martial Arts that exchange and contemporary development with the various philosophical currents that influence Eastern thought. If Buddhism is the main pillar of the "External" styles (WaiChia), Taoism is the main pillar for the "Internal" (NeiChia). The development of the "Inner school" begins in the Han period (206 B.C.-220 A.D.) and it will take many centuries before there is a major evolution. In Tai Chi Chuan, as with other ancient styles, it is not easy to reconstruct its entire history.

Tai Chi f the SongShan mountains, with the famous Shaolin monastery, were the major center of development of the external styles, for NeiChia the WuTang (WuDang) mountains in the Hubei region were equally important. In that characteristic mountain range in central China - with breathtaking panoramas and distant horizons in the center of the Chinese empire -, many monasteries linked to Taoist philosophy will emerge. The monks often alternated their spiritual studies with martial exercises, drawing on the philosophy to create highly effective combat methodologies. Great masters, excellent swordsmen and characters that through their evolution reached immortality, contribute to reinforce the legends about this mountain range.

In the WuTang there was an important historical figure to whom the creation of Tai Chi Chuan is attributed: it is the Taoist master and monk CHANG SAN FENG (Zhang San Feng). He lived in the Song period (960-1279) around 1200, together with characters such as Lao Tze, Ta Mo for Buddhism, or Confucius for Confucianism, has a fundamental role for Taoism. He is credited with the creation of the 13 basic positions of Tai Chi Chuan style, called "Chi Saì" and common to all schools of the style, which developed in the following centuries. Also with Chang San Feng history is mixed with legend. Whether it was a dream, or the result of meditation on the natural elements and their changes, or the observation of a fight between a crane and a snake, Chang San Feng was undoubtedly inspired by the I CHING and the philosophy of the trigrams to create his 13 combinations of movements.

Tai Chi At the same time, another style that will leave its mark in martial history, Yueh Sam Shou (the three hands of Yueh), created by the master Yueh Fei, general of the imperial army, expert in the use of the spear, is also beginning to be spoken of. It is said that thanks to this character and his techniques, the bases of one of the most important styles of the internal school, the Hsing I, could be developed. This system is based on the observation of animals and, like Tai Chi Chuan, on the 5 elements. Once again, Tai Chi Chuan disappears in the multiple folds of Chinese history, to reappear at the end of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), with the master Wang TzunYeh and his disciples Li San Jian and Chang Fa. They transmitted the internal techniques to the mythical Chen Wang Ting Wang, who will be the founder of the first style of Tai Chi Chuan of which we have certain news. Interestingly, both Master YuehFei and Chen Wang Ting were generals and experts in the spear that, as for the Hsing I style, will become one of the most important weapons of Tai Chi Chuan. Trained to be a great fighter, very effective in the use of weapons, Master Chen will be secluded in his village ChenChiaKou, to codify the ChenChiaChuan style (the current Chen style of Tai Chi Chuan). Tai Chi Chuan is a unique style, but over time, it will in fact be subdivided into many branches or schools; each will create its interpretation of the 13 positions and the 13 principles of action. Among all of them, undoubtedly, a place of honor belongs to the Chen school, from which many other schools will derive. The Chen style will be transmitted by the founder to his three sons Chen Pin Ren, Chen Pin Chi and Chen Pin Wang, and from them will start different currents that will reach our days. The transmission of Chen style Tai Chi Chuan will remain for many years confined to the village of ChenChiaKou, transmitted only between master members of the Chen family. But that did not stop its fame from growing.

One of the few masters who took his teaching outside the village (more precisely to Beijing), was the master Chen Fa Ke, called "The Buffalo", in the first half of the twentieth century. As happened with other important masters of different styles, between the second half of the 19th century and the first years of the 20th century, representatives of Tai Chi Chuan also found themselves involved in the continuous revolts that developed both against the Qing dynasty (which replaced the Chinese Ming emperors), and against the increasingly powerful Western delegations. At that time, for example, master ChenZhouXing, leader and descendant of the founder of the Chen style, was the head of a secret sect and of an army of more than 10,000 men, in the "Opium War". The history of the family and the Chen style is full of anecdotes and great masters, but in the early 1800s, highlights the figure of a character who is not part of the family, Master Yang Fu Kuei, better known as Yang Lu Chan. Of humble origin, the young Yang was passionate about martial arts. That was the reason that led Yang to go to the village of ChenChiaKou, where the Chen family lived and where he was hired as a servant in the house of Master Chen Chan Hising. Sneakily observing many of the master's classes, young Yang quickly attained great ability in the internal techniques. His perseverance was important because when he was discovered by the Master he had to show all that he had learned and being better than the direct students, he was accepted as a disciple. Thus, following the teachings of his master, young Yang learned the ancient techniques of the Chen family. Years of practice allowed Yang Lu Chan to become a Master and begin to create a new system. Back in Beijing he created his own style: the Yang School was born. His fame quickly grew in China and he was given the name Yang Wu Ti (The Invincible Warrior).

Tai Chi

It is said that Yang Lu Chan was an excellent practitioner and a formidable fighter, both empty-handed and with weapons. For example, he will include in the practice of the Yang style the use of the Tan Tao, the sword. His experience with this weapon was the result of a JIAO HUAN, a pact between masters to exchange knowledge between their styles, without anyone submitting to the other. It is said that a man from Beijing organized a demonstration inviting three of the greatest masters of the time, among them Yang Lu Chan. The first, called "The Iron Fist", was an expert in the DaiShen Pi KaMonChuan style; the second, called "The White Monkey", was a practitioner of Hull CennHouChuan (12 monkeys style) and an expert in Tan Tao. Although Yang Lu Chan's complete experiences with this weapon will only be transmitted by one of his sons, the Tan Tao will always be an important weapon of the style. But his fame as a weapon fighter is undoubtedly due to his great skill in the use of the Ta Kwan, "Long Stick", a stick of about 3 meters. The use of this weapon was born from the experiences he had with the master Chen Chan Hising, in the use of the spear, experiences that he adapted and transformed to suit the use of this type of stick. Invincible in the use of Ta Kwan, Yang Lu Chan is the protagonist of many anecdotes. In particular, it is told how he codified the form with the long stick. It is said that one day, Yang Lu Chan helped an old man who had been attacked by an army officer who was drunk. The next day, the officer went after Yang with 12 soldiers; warned, he tried to escape, but was overtaken and had to face the

soldiers and the officer on horseback, defeating them with his stick. With the experience of that fight, he created a sequence that collected all the main movements used. That would be the form of the long stick that he later transmitted to his two sons, although only one of them would keep it complete. As a result of the interpretation of the same basic principles of the Chen style, the Yang style spread rapidly, also considered as a preventive and therapeutic art, becoming today the most practiced style of Tai Chi Chuan in the world. As it happened with the Chen school, also the Yang would be transmitted officially and for a long time by masters who were members of the family, although Yang Lu Chan himself had many students, in addition to his 3 sons. Among them, Master WuYuSeon (WuXuXian) was undoubtedly important. WuYuSeon, from his experience with Master Yang, created the WU style. Being a skilled practitioner and having created a new style, the importance of this master is also fundamental to make a historical journey through the Tai Chi Chuan style. WuYuSeon, after having practiced with master Yang, will also study the Chen style with master ChenChing Ping, one of the most important masters of the Chen family. It will be master Wu who will find the text "The treatise of the 13 positions", for a long time kept as a secret of the Chen family. WuYuSeon sent this treatise to Beijing, to his master Yang Lu Chan, who had it published. The text explained that the founder, Chen Wang Ting had had two great experts of internal martial styles as instructors, the masters Li San Jian (Li Jian Fan) and Chang Fa. In turn, these masters learned the same knowledge of internal martial techniques and Chi Kung directly from Master Wang TzunYeh, a famous swordsman from the WuTang Mountains. Wang TzunYeh, knowledgeable of the 13 positions created by Master Chan San Feng, will create what today are still the 13 basic principles of all Tai Chi Chuan schools, 8 of which came from the PaKua, the eight trigrams and 5 came from the WuYinshu, the 5 elements. Yang Lu Chan transmitted more or less completely his experiences to his three sons who will continue the teaching, although the most popular school that will remain is that of master Yang Chen Hou. In addition to the direct members of the Yang family, there have been and still are accredited and important masters such as: FU ZHONG WEN - CEN MAN CHIN - TUNG YIN CHI - KOU LEUNG CHIN and many more. The Yang style quickly conquered fame and diffusion in the North of China, but only in the early 1900's, with Master Yang Chen Fu, it will be practiced in the South of the country. In fact, Yang Chen Fu, grandson of the founder of the style, will travel to Canton to spread Tai Chi Chuan. He will be one of the main members of the JingWoAssociation, an association composed of important masters exponents of various styles of Kung Fu, created with the aim of preserving and correctly transmitting the traditional martial arts. On his trip to the South, Yang Chen Fu, accompanied by some students, made many demonstrations, had to accept many challenges from practitioners of other martial arts, to demonstrate the fullness of technique and practice of Yang style Tai Chi Chuan. Master Yang Chen Fu will make a clear division between the martial aspect of Tai Chi Chuan and its purely therapeutic practice. A practice performed with slow and continuous movements, without variations of rhythm, that is to say, lacking apparent links with the martial application and the actions in Fa Jing ("explosion of energy"), which made the Tai Chi Chuan style famous in combat. This would allow the diffusion of the Yang style to become the most practiced style of Tai Chi Chuan in the world. This differentiation will be highlighted in 1958. After the profound changes in the political and social organization in China with the "Cultural

Tai Chi Revolution", also the Martial Arts, among which Tai Chi Chuan, will undergo profound changes. In Peking a commission met which specifically tried to reorganize the Yang style and make it suitable for mass diffusion, emptying it even more of its martial contents. Short and simplified forms would be created, with and without weapons, and some series of exercises would be codified and widely spread. This work, although it made the style accessible to many people, created an enormous confusion around Tai Chi Chuan. Today, in fact, many practitioners know neither the history nor the martial origins of the style, which is often confused with a simple gentle gymnastics. The work of our school over the years has focused on the recovery of the origins of Tai Chi Chuan style. In fact, the form treated in this book, derives directly from the tradition of the Yang school, by Master Fue ZhongWen and Fu Han Tong.

The Kajukenbo continues to grow day by day and more than ever are demanded forms of teaching updated to our times and the EKKA responds with this series of 2 volumes corresponding to the intermediate level, and thus cover the basic techniques of the program of white belt, to black belt. Professor Maurizio Maltese presents in this extensive and detailed work the "Scherma Jonica", Ionian fencing, an art cultivated century after century, perfected and made more and more effective by constant practice in every district, village and town of the area straddling the Ionian Sea, between Calabria, Apulia and Basilicata, and with very diverse influences from pre-Roman, Greek, Byzantine and Norman peoples, as well as Spanish and French origin. The knife was the weapon available even to the poorest of men, the farmer and the herdsman, who used it in most of their daily work, from cutting a piece of bread to defending themselves against an aggressor (be it animal or human). As fighting became indispensable to assert one's rights, the need arose to train, to attend a teacher and sometimes a school. In the schools of arms one learned to use other elements in aid or in concert with the knives, such as the jacket to camouflage the blade, which, unbeknownst to the adversary, or the hat. Thus, in Ionian fencing, century after century, many ideas and traditions of different schools, distant in time and space, are mixed: it is obvious to think that each region, if not each Italian village, used its own and different techniques, if only because of the great wealth of forms that the knife had in the country, both in its daily use and in its offensive use.
